I realize it’s not the exact same scenario but the Red Sox just traded their #3 prospect (#56 in top 100 per MLB Pipeline) for Curtis Mead. Early is just coming out of prospect status (turned 24 in April) and has already had “early” success in the majors, which one would think would make him more valuable. I’m not sure it’s safe to assume what the prices will be for starting pitchers.

And this is still a team that isn’t going to spend in free agency, at least until the new owner takes over, which still may not be for a few more years. They can’t afford to trade away their top talent considering they don’t spend much in free agency. What are they at right now? A $90 million dollar payroll?

The Cubs desperately need starting pitching and were still willing to dump Taillon and eat the remainder of his $18 million dollars for this season. He will definitely clear waivers so if he is willing to sign a minor league deal and see if he can figure it out at Charlotte, that’s fine. Otherwise, he’s been one of the worst starters in baseball this year.

It’s called being realistic. If you honestly think this current rotation has a legitimate shot in the postseason, you aren’t being honest with yourself. I also said, if you want to trade any non-top prospects for some rentals, or guys under control for the future, go ahead. But I wouldn’t add to this team at the cost of any top prospects.

Even giving up a guy like Carlson for a rental is not something the Sox should simply jump to do to improve this year’s team only. This team currently has no catcher and an extremely questionable rotation, even if all of their starters were healthy. And the starters that are being rumored of the Sox interest aren’t going to improve this team enough to do dick in the postseason. Let’s be honest. If they can obtain some rentals without giving up any top prospects, sure go for it.

True, but he’s a good backup catcher with two more years of control. The Mets have no incentive to just give him up for nothing and if there is interest from more than one team, they can hold out for the highest bidder. Afterall, we all thought we had the catcher position locked in with four options going into the season. Meanwhile, the Sox are now trying to obtain the Mets backup catcher.

I thought you were talking about the present. Yes, they called him up on June 20th. They cut him and resigned him to another minor league contract. This time, they likely cut him from his minor league deal to get a shot with another team.
