Poll: Predict Final Win Total for the 2024 Chicago White
WhiteSox2023 replied to South Side Hit Men's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Ozzie has them at 62 wins. Chuck picked 70. -
They just lost Eduardo Rodriguez to a left lat strain so this makes some sense. The option vests if Montgomery starts at least 10 games during the 2024 season.

Curious to see the money. Surprised the Yankees didn’t pounce.

Chavez, as old as he is, tends to put up good numbers in the regular season. I’m sure many posters wanted to see him make the bullpen.

2023-24 NFL Season Thread
WhiteSox2023 replied to CentralChamps21's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I haven’t seen one mock draft that doesn’t have MHJ as the first WR off the board. I looked up Mike Tannenbaum and he doesn’t appear to have any Chicago / Bears ties. I assumed he was a Bears fan with this goofy mock. -
Yes, I do. However, I find it even more entertaining when someone thinks that an offseason in which the Sox GM rebuilt the bottom half of their starting lineup into a terrible combination of bench players in DeJong, Lopez, Maldonado, and Fletcher/Pillar is a good one. It’s like they are actually buying what Grifol is trying to sell, which would definitely be sticking one’s head in the sand and ignoring all factual data — objective things like recent stats for these players, age causing their decline, etc.
-
So what does being overly optimistic about the rotation, for example, do for you? I don’t need a crystal ball to tell me that the rotation is not going to be good and another poster spelled it all out on the previous page. Is it better to have high hopes and then be disappointed? I believe you predicted 68 wins for this team. That is a bad record. Chances are if their record is that bad, the rotation will not have performed well like you expected it to.
-
Is being 100% positive all the time any better? Just seems like you are sticking your head in the sand, ignoring all logic and reason, and lying to yourself.

Montgomery was drafted by the Yankees and played the first 5+ years of his career there. The Yankees are expected to be a contender while the Sox are expected to be a last place team. It’s great that you hate New York but if any team would have to overpay Montgomery to play for them, it would be the Sox.

It will provide even more fat cushion protection from the stray bullets hitting anyone else.

No, it actually looks like melted chocolate.

Schriffen wouldn’t dare eat one of those on air.
-
Oooh, he’s so new age! So cutting edge! Grifol thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room as he tries to spit this “new” strategy. The more he opens his mouth, the dumber he sounds.
-
Competitive advantage. Grifol will let you and opposing teams know who the closer is when you need to know.

Just need a VPN app for those in Chicago.

Surprised Pham isn’t signed by now. Greinke, Hill, and Cueto will probably sign once some injuries hit a rotation a month or two into the season. I think Syndergaard is cooked.
-
I didn’t really think about it this way, and I’m not surprised Getz would try to save $2 million where he could (if not breaking any MLB rules), but Pillar’s comments are pretty telling. He’s definitely upset by the last minute bait and switch.
-
It wouldn’t be so bad if Getz planned on spending that $2 million elsewhere, but it is likely just going back in Jerry’s pocket like Cease’s $8 million.
-
These are good points, but obviously Montgomery isn’t getting what he wants in free agency and he is still sitting out there unsigned. At some point, you don’t always get to go to the contending team you want to and money talks.
-
Seems like a leap to make the assumption that they were trying to acquire another free agent or trade target. They just signed Grossman (yes, opposite side of hitting platoon) but likely just didn’t want to pay Pillar $3 million and saw an opportunity to save $2 million. Look at the rest of the Sox bench. No one else is making anywhere near that kind of money. I realize Stassi is no longer making the opening day roster due to injury, but the Braves are paying the majority of our originally planned backup catcher’s salary. Their starting SS DeJong is making a paltry $1.75 million. Remember the talk about the Sox being interested in Lorenzen or Clevinger due to trading away Cease’s $8 million salary? Where did those talks go? Once one of those options signs elsewhere, you just pocket the payroll? What kind of one year deal would Montgomery be willing to sign for at this point? He would be a great flip candidate. But it sure seems like the Sox never planned on spending Cease’s freed up $8 million to begin with. This offseason was about cutting payroll, so $2 million more for a bench player was deemed no small amount and Getz took the opportunity to cut the payroll even more.
