Cease To Padres per Passan
The Eaton trade is probably the best trade Hahn ever made, and would probably go on the list of best Sox trades in history. I think most Sox fans would agree. But he also made some absolutely awful trades and was one of the worst GM’s in free agency. One great trade does not overcome his overall failures.

Good luck. You are going to be crapping your pants every time Cease has a funky finish to his delivery coming off the mound. ?

Those sources may not be exact, and I wouldn’t be surprised if posters’ payroll numbers on here were more accurate. I knew the Sox payroll was pretty high the past two years (especially 2022), but I didn’t think it ever got that close to $230-$233 million. That is pretty high and yet 8 teams were willing to eat the LT penalty. Pretty nuts.

Cease To Padres per Passan
Couldn’t two things be possible — either Getz is asking for too much or other teams aren’t offering enough? I mean, the Yankees supposedly wouldn’t even include Spencer Jones (#73 overall) in a trade for Cease, when they already have Jasson Dominguez. Is Jones really too high of an ask as the frontlining prospect in a trade for Cease? I don’t think so.

Agreed. I think they wanted to move on at any cost, right or wrong.

Giolito was a representative for the MLBPA so Jerry had to try to stick it to him. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2022/11/28/giolito-mccullers-among-6-elected-to-mlbpa-leadership-roles/50984921/

His glove isn’t good enough for Getz. While his bat for last season would fit what Getz is looking for, Anderson may actually revert to his usual production which would be too good for Getz.

The Sox had a $181 million dollar payroll to start the 2023 season, while the initial luxury tax threshold was $233 million for the 2023 season. It was $230 million for the prior 2022 season as well. I’m not seeing how the Sox were ever close to the luxury tax during the entire 2023 season, or the previous 2022 season in which their payroll was even higher. Jerry is probably gritting his teeth right now. He probably called Angelos and advised him to have Elias trade them all away.

$32.4 million wasn’t enough flexibility? Same place he ended up pitching for both the Royals and Rangers — high leverage / setup.

Sox Sign Rafael Ortega to a MiLB Deal.
This is a good point. The Sox draft position is locked in no matter what but Getz did not add any offense with his signings and is having an offseason that would lead you to believe they are intentionally tanking, which serves no purpose anymore with the draft changes.

The Sox weren’t near the luxury tax last year. Eight teams were and had to pay up. https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/tax/2023/#:~:text=MLB Team Luxury Tax Tracker&text=The 2023 CBT Threshold is %24233%2C000%2C000.

Agreed, they aren’t spending any money on an OF so Colas makes the most sense right now. Also, I have to imagine the Braves are done looking for starting pitcher after the Sale trade. They have quality and depth in their rotation. Strider Morton Sale Elder Fried ReyLo Smith-Shawver

Thanks. I forgot to even mention the steal of a starting pitcher the Royals got back from the Rangers for 29.1 innings of Chapman, while only paying for about half of his $3.75 million salary.

Scott Barlow was the Royals’ closer to start the season, not Chapman, and Barlow ended up with 13 saves out of 16 opportunities. Chapman had 2 saves out of 4 opportunities for the Royals before he was traded to the Rangers. Graveman had 8 saves out of 12 opportunities for the White Sox before he was traded to the Astros. Hendriks came back early and finished the season with 1 save out of his 1 opportunity before needing TJ surgery. Also, Jimmy Lambert had 1 save out of 1 opportunity and pitched more innings (37.2) than he likely should have with a 5+ ERA due to the fact that the Sox didn’t have a better high leverage reliever like Chapman on the roster. So you are saying that Chapman signed with the Royals on January 27, 2023 knowing he would only be the “backup” closer to Barlow, but he definitely wouldn’t have signed with the Sox while knowing that Hendriks was diagnosed with cancer on January 8th and that he would start the season as the “backup” closer to Graveman, the same situation as backing up Barlow with the Royals?

The OF Thread
There hasn’t been a quicker rise and fall than Colas as a prospect but he’s still only 25, the same age as the stud “prospect” Joey Ortiz that Orioles fans so desperately want to deal for Cease. Also, many of the same Sox fan posters that want to dump Colas, even though he makes all the sense in the world to give playing time to on this awful 2024 Sox team, wanted to replace him with one year of Kevin Kiermaier or Adam Duvall. What are Kiermaier or Duvall going to do for the 2024 Sox on one year deals? Serve as mediocre trade deadline guys that return little to nothing? I’d rather see what Colas can do with those at bats. He could be the next Dayan Viciedo but maybe he actually develops into something? God knows it’s better than giving that playing time to 34/35 year old outfielders, which would basically be wasted at bats for this team.

Gallo and Taylor do absolutely zero for this team. May as well play Colas or an OF if one is acquired when trading Cease.

Sox Sign Rafael Ortega to a MiLB Deal.
If Sheets gets any non-emergency starts in the outfield for the Sox in 2024, they haven’t learned a thing and Getz is as awful of a GM as Hahn.

Obviously last year was a lost season regardless and it wouldn’t have mattered in the grand scheme of things, but how would having two relievers with similarly good stats not have been better than just one, with Hendriks on the injured list? Chapman wouldn’t have been an improvement on Jimmy Lambert’s 5.26 ERA in 37.2 innings?

They don’t have the lefty hitter that the Sox would want but they still have the pitching. But I have no idea if the Dodgers are still interested in trading for a starter. Nick Frasso, Gavin Stone, Jackson Ferris Andy Pages
