  1. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 05:21 PM) The idea of a VMart hitter at DH is very good . However the only VMart type hitter is VMart. I checked his splits and he's killed, Twins, Royals and Indians. Just the kind of guy we need, strong LH bat that kills division foes. If I was paid by the Sox to do research that's what I'd be looking for, an American League LH who hits very well against our division to lessen the chance of failure. a very interesting slant on the research....... good point. but as Balta said... age.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 05:31 PM) At this point, from a discussion we had earlier this year, the dodgers TV deal appears to be set and the Dodgers get that big pool of money regardless of what happens elsewhere. They may still have the money to spend on him but they won't make up for it with new TV revenues. you are prob right, but I thought the tv deal is in limbo b/c of some contractual situation. either way, with him, and the tv deal, more people outside la would like to follow them. pretty much like a cable deal or direct tv deal. something like that.
  3. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 05:11 PM) Being able to beat an offer and willing to beat an offer are two different things. Doing a quick Google search, I found numerous articles stating that the Sox were also in talks after 2010 to acquire Rasmus and that Quentin was part of the proposed deal. So you're notion that they did not like him is just wrong. you may be right, however since then, no other rumors out there. I am sure if the sox were hot after him since 2010, the trade would have happen. now with Hahn and a new regime in the front office, I don't think getting him is in the picture.
  4. QUOTE (scs787 @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 02:46 AM) Certainly not wrong, but that team still had a big time offense. We need a Dye to our PK(Abreu). If they can snag Stanton they're probably gonna be willing to put that payroll back up into the 120 range. Say Stanton gets 25M a year, that'll put the Sox salary at ~75M next year, 71M in 2016, Danks and Lexi's 25M come off the books in 2017, and Abreu/Sale are the only guys locked up in 2018. Trading Lexi for pitching could also free up even more $$. If they do decide to get that payroll back up to ~120 Stantons ~25 wouldn't prevent them from adding pitching. without factoring the prospects that the sox have to sacrifice to get him, I will deal with the salary aspect. a big team like Dodgers who has their own tv deal would likely benefit from union with Stanton. first Stanton will make the Dodgers a very attractive team to watch, to clamor to go and see, which will improve on the attendance and finally advertising. it a win, win situation. as much as I wouldn't mind the sox going for it, it would be too much to pay to get him here in chi.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 03:35 PM) Just because the Sox can spend, doesn't mean they will be the highest bidders. If Seattle offers 4/60 to try to get Martinez there, what do the White Sox do to top that? JR always stated that if needed he can approve spending, imo it also mean spending upward over 100+. but to spend for the sake of spending is what the sox will not do. if the right mixture of players are there and the sox can go to the final piece of the big pict, they will spend the money.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 03:07 PM) I'm not sure what the Sox can offer VMart that someone else can't offer more of. There are teams that have a better chance of winning, and others that will offer more money/years on a deal. also it is up to the player to decide what he wants in the next step. either will be his driving factor, more money, a better chance of winning esp in the playoff.
  7. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 02:56 PM) Since the article in question was posted quite a ways back, here it is again: http://cornerthree.net/2014/07/29/the-batt...eir-teams-wins/ thanks for the lesson. I am going to reread the other article, read the one you pointed and use that as a text for your example. hopefully I will start to understand the advance stat theory. this was a great post.
  8. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 02:55 PM) The point made earlier that seeing what he's doing in person is important (and not necessarily info that can be taken from stats), but I can also say with 99.9999% certainty (let's call that the wite coeficient) that a player doesn't improve as much as he has while making no changes to their approach and skill set. again 100% correct, you can't improve with out making subtle improvement. a player will not also improve with out having a better knowledge what he is looking for, ie cut back on the hr swing and make more of a line drive hit. poor example but I think you know what I mean. lastly if the org doesn't mind if the player is not out to swing for the fences but to work on the batting techniques. you can not help to have some improvements. unless of course the player is a mental midget.
  9. you know what really impress me about this season, beside the obvious names of the sox success. that is the play of cat - Adrian Nieto. I mean think about it, he should have spent another yr in the minors, but beside the loophole, he played what 40+ games has about 100 at bats and batted an avg of 240+ strikeout comparing to his hits was reasonable. this kid may have a future. I wonder where is he going to play this winter.
  10. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 02:09 PM) I'll disagree in part on the scouting reports. There is one BP guy who hates him, almost cartoonishly, to a point where I have to ignore his analysis on the guy. Among others I've seen, I saw reports of marked improvement, and some say they saw the same guy. I've also watched video and seen him in person. 100% no doubt he's made adjustments that made him better. Hell, you don't improve the numbers like he did without improving anything. He does still need work on pitch recognition, but I've seen him (and there is video of this) adjust to a breaking pitch and hit a HR off of it. I totally agree. look at his number this yr and compare them to last yr. a HUGE improvement esp in the strikeouts, while maintaining the same hr and better offensive numbers. but here is the key. ready, he is only 20 yrs old. he still has room to continue to grow and to get better.
  11. QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 01:20 AM) I have a question for those who follow this closely. Where is the predicted drop-off? In other words, are the top five ( for example) players close enough that any of them would be a great pick? Is there one player who is the slam-dunk, can't miss number one guy? Obviously, there is always a chance of a bust regardless. I may be a minority here on this thought process, but I can envision the sox picking up free agent Norichika Aoki as another starting outfielder. I really like eaton and what he has done this yr. however I can't see him not getting injured, again. with Aoki as another option for leadoff, and with eaton, that can be an exciting top of the order, or 1 of them to #6 Aoki will be low cost, for a limited amount of yr. now the biggest problem is DV. I say until his future is decided with the sox, DH him.
  12. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 02:04 PM) Posted here. The winners are both fringe guys, but I'd categorize both as interesting prospects. Some big names got honorable mentions. this is proof of why I enjoy reading what you guys post. I initial response to the prospect you listed would have been WHO? Andre Wheeler another is Banks, who are they. but with you guys, I can read about them and know they are in the sox system. again many thanks you know what..... it is going to be horrible, no more sox baseball for the minors.
  13. QUOTE (Señor Ding-Dong @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 04:10 AM) He hit two HRs this year compared to 8 last year. I don't know, I'd day he had a neutral year. Same thing goes for Barnum. He got off to a terrible start (I remember I just about wrote him off at one point) but somehow managed to finish over .250. He didn't quite show as much power as I thought he would and IIRC he had a lot of errors at 1B. So I'd say neutral for those two, but they did show great resiiliency by bouncing back from rought starts, so they deserve kudos for that. yeah I saw that but the other stats supports that he was doing other things beside going for the long ball such as, more walks, more total bases, more doubles more steals. all this tells me he was trying to be the better hitter. then again, I may be wrong.
  14. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 10:49 AM) Is this is a riddle or something? The guy that bats leadoff gets the most plate appearances. according to the article, that is what the writer in implying. don't get me wrong on this, I really don't agree with the article in many ways, but the writer is using the advance stats. It is implying to move Jose A kind of player as a #1 batter and move Eaton to 4 or 5. it also mention that the #2 batter, now should also be another speed guy. I remember Tony LaRussa when he was coaching the sox wanted the #2 hitter to work the count, to wait for the ideal pitch, to be patient at the plate for the leadoff man to steal. he didn't like the #2 hitter to anything if he is onbase to distract from the #3 hitter. working the advance stats is 1 thing, but I can see using the stats with a good base of basic baseball knowledge. again I will use Tony LaRussa, do you want him to manage by using this advance stat or by his baseball senses.
  15. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 06:19 AM) I'm starting to think the 2015 2-hole hitter isn't on the team yet unless his name is Gillaspie, and by all measures the Sox just don't believe in that. Alexei Ramirez is too easy to get out any time he's not dialed in, and he's consistently trotted out #2. Flowers, Viciedo, Avi, Sanchez & Semien are all too free of swingers or just too inexperienced to give the second most ABs of the season too. If we add a tough-out kinda guy for #2 i think the rest falls into place nicely and we'll be pretty solid top to middle with potential at the bottom. I would love Sanchez/Semien turning the lineup over but not at 2. here here...... nice way to sum it up.
  16. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 05:22 AM) Avasail is going to be everyday next year, bank on it. Second, they will spend, but im not convinced its next year. The rotation is an issue however and I dont know if they are going to see if they have it in the system or if they have to trade or buy it. Hahn would obviously like to fill the pen through fringe trades like he has recently as well as a garbage heap pickup but the rotation is going to be difficult to patch. I'm hearing there is a ton of payroll room, a TON. But Hahn is reluctant to do a KW and spend money horribly with a team that finishes 10 games out of the division. I wonder if the sox will trade for a young of'er who has power? if the sox does not plan on spending at least for positional players via free agents, will they make a run at Tomas the Cuban player?
  17. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 05:09 AM) It's okay if you didn't, I'm going to quote it for you! '2nd: Your player with the best ability to drive in runs – weighted situations say that putting your best OPS/SLG batter in this slot will lead to the most total runs for a team over the course of the season.' '5th-9th: Starting with middle-of-the-pack guys that are comparable to your number three hitter, put the rest of your hitters in descending order of quality, as those lower in the lineup will receive fewer plate appearances over time and therefore hurt the team effort less. Put players with the ability to steal bases in the earlier slots here to maximize run-scoring potential.' I said my idea for the batting order combines metrics and traditional thought. Garcia would bat am second because he is a patient hitter, although he has been a bit aggressive since his return from injury, and he is one of the best pure hitters on the team and he is also a run producer. The article said: 'Lesson: bat your best overall hitter – perhaps the one with the highest OPS (OBP plus SLG) or SLG – second in order to drive in more runs over the course of a season.' While that guy would be Abreu it would be better for him if he bats third, so you can sandwich him between Garcia and Martinez. Connor would bat 5th because he has batted 3rd for a good portion of the season, while he dosent steal bases, he dose get on base at a good clip, he's a contact hitter and hits at a high average. that is why I always thought of him as a #2 hitter, depending on the pitcher.
  18. QUOTE (Señor Ding-Dong @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 04:06 AM) Carlos Sanchez: I really like what I've seen from him so far. He's got a compact swing and makes good contact. I agree with those who think he'll develop into a 10-15 HR guy eventually. He's solidly built and seems to be growing into his body without it affecting his range or athleticism. It's probably why he hit 7 homers in the minors this year compared to the 3 total he hit over the course of his previous 5 years. He's shown flashes defenisvely but also has made some mistakes, which isn't surprising given his age and experience. I think he's got a great shot to be an everyday starter next year at 2B (possibly SS is Alexei is dealt). Marcus Semien: There's a lot to like about Semien too. We already saw how well he works the count in his first stint this season when he had some timely/clutch hits, and I like his power potential and versatility. He can play all over the infield and possibly the outfield, which is why I think he'll be our super sub/utility guy as well as Gillaspie's platoon partner next season. I think he'll get plenty of playing time spread out over several positions even if he's not a "starter." Andy Wilkins: Too early to say really, but I love his AAA numbers (obviously) and I just hope his bat can play at the ML level. It'd be great if he can fill the DH role and give Jose a break on occasion. Lots of strikeouts so far in his brief tenure with the Sox, but he hit a foul ball the other day that was pretty close to going out and IIRC he barreled one up in his first game and sent it out to deep right-center. He's got great power, but will he make enough contact and get some walks? which I always thought that what screwed him up a little. he is a rookie, I thought a manager should not have put a rookie in a spot as important as a #2 hitter. that is too much pressure to perform. I am sure he was trying tooooo hard not to screw up,
  19. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 05:26 AM) I have only been looking up HS players but I can do the college pitchers too. Personally, I'm hoping for either Tucker or Hooper in the first round and Ryan Mountcastle in the second. On a side note: Holy s***, I wished the Sox signed Soler I am very surprise that Ryan Mountcastle is not listed in the first round. but with mountcastle, tucker and hooper, all 3 are very good hs'ers. question is will the sox use a 1 rounder on a hs'er. moountcastle sound like a name from a 14 century knights movie.
  20. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 03:49 AM) Cool dude! I don't agree with the Carson Fulmer projection either. I looked at video of him and he has an assholes and elbows kind of delivery that looks way too inconsistent. I looked at video of the projected #10 Walker Buehler and really liked what I saw. Interestingly enough I also found this from BA dated August 28 about the Cape Cod League and the first name mentioned is Walker Buehler. http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/cap...30-prospects-2/ I feel my inner baseball nerd coming out. ref carson, he was a rp for over a yr in college then they convert him to sp at the end of his soph season. he has 1 pitch - fast ball 95+ a decent secondary pitch and trying to get control of a 3 pitch which the experts hope he will have by draft time. so he is a rp who may or may not develop as a sp. pass! buehler has 3 plus pitches and a 4 th as solid. he seems to be polish and good stats. I don't know. nothing that I have read seem to overwhelm me. I don't know. if the sox were picking 5-10 the pitcher I really am impress with is Josh Sborz. I know he is not rated in this write up. but I really am impress. where the sox is projected to pick as of tonite, I will look again as I mention before, of'er. there are 3 gems depending on how Bolt develops maybe 4.
  21. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 02:33 AM) 1.) Semien: I've always liked him. Can he play MLB for 10 years or not? 2.) I was high on Sanchez til fathom brought me down to earth. He does not think he's a starter in MLB and does not think he has as live a bat as I thought I've been seeing. 3.) Viciedo has hit so many tape measure bombs he makes me think he could be a valuable piece with Abreu and A. Garcia and V. Martinez. He's such a headcase however at the plate. If the Sox were smart they'd make him play winter ball and pay Big Hurt big bucks to go with him for 3 weeks. Have Big Hurt discuss every at bat with him and every f***ing pitch. Viciedo is not valuable with his current mindset at the plate. I'm convinced he has talent. I'd also make Flowers play winter ball and do the same thing with him, just not make him catch. If they have a DH let him DH there. If not, stick him at first base. Both hitters need mental help, not physical. That mental help can come from Big Hurt if they pay the price. Money talks. Pay Hurt 500,000 bucks to go work with those two! interestiing. I really mean this, as crazy as this sound, you actually make sense.
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 02:26 AM) Amen. You said succinctly what I wanted to say. Amen again. Although to play devil's advocate to your second sentence. The people that think he was upset about the demotion and it affected his performance (all season) believe he wouldn't have had to have had the mental toughness to persevere through a 2-for-25 stretch because he'd have raked all season. Don't forget, he still has the unknown (second team quarterback) syndrome on his side with many fans. I really agree, but I am going to say something without using rose color glasses or soft soap it. if he couldn't deal with being demoted, 1. did he do anything to show otherwise 2 get really freaking real. he is a pro, who is maybe 1 season from making the big show. how many freaking players would have love to have be considered for such a move. believe me, I am sure the sox sent him down with a list to work on ........ not to pout.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 01:13 AM) You just made a really strong case that it's insane to trade for any other team's minor league players. I liked the Davidson deal, but man, if they could possibly miss "Things that turn him into a sub .200 hitter at AAA" then there needs to be another scouting and front office overhaul. I strongly disagree, and here is why. where is there in the history of baseball, where 1 person made every trade, a successful one. there will be bumps in the road however with the lack of overall skill level in the system, it make this trade more pronounce. I wonder if there was 100% approval when the trade happen? I know 1 thing, I will now question all the stats that comes from prospect from that league.
  24. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Sep 4, 2014 -> 09:12 PM) Would this help at all? http://www.mymlbdraft.com/MLB-Mock-Draft I thought it was interesting enough for now. great ..... it is the new monthly. update with Joshua, he prob can go a little more in details with the prospect. the first 3 is as I expect it. where they have the sox picking and player projected, I do not agree. but I still like to see how some of the players who I think are possible for the sox do as the next yr goes. I really wish I could get an understanding at what the sox will identify as their needs.
