  1. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Sep 11, 2014 -> 08:13 AM) Better off spending money on FA? No way. The Sox cannot fill all the holes by relying on FA. Trades will be necessary. Masterson is now an aging reclamation project that is currently making 10M and a big risk as to if he can ever rebound. That's one expensive project! Latos, lol, well he's going to cost more in prospects than McHugh! Yet with McHugh you say its better to hold prospects for one more year? Huh? Shields is going to be 33 and rather costly both in salary and years while he likely begins to decline. No thanks. BMAC will cost as well and is already 31. Again, no thanks. Leake is making just shy of 6M this year, getting a nice bump in salary this winter while he goes into his 2nd arbitration year and will be a free agent after 2016. Oh, and he's going to cost more in prospects than McHugh as well. Adding McHugh allows the Sox to fill a hole in the rotation thus saving the money that would be spent on a FA starter to be spent elsewhere like a higher priced position player via trade. It would give the Sox a better chance to be a contender in 2015. Honestly, I do not see where you're coming from. you are correct sire, to a certain degree. I am still wanting to see what Hahn has in store. didn't he say, with a devilish grim that he has something up his sleeve so to speak? either way, in the fa market, the sox can bid on some hitters that are interesting, esp Tomas the Cuban. also there has to be some prime hitters that will not get their option pick up. second I am guessing, as much as I will hate, there are bound to be some trading, Cin, Dodgers, even Arz comes to mind. those teams will need their lineup to be address either with getting rid of some players or getting some. pitching is needed and maybe a SP, isn't there a Japanese pitcher that is also a fa? there are some other interesting fa SP if the sox goes that route. lastly, the sox prospects hasn't been heard from, I am sure some will be knocking on the door. so this summer, as I see it, will be very interesting and exciting as the sox brass will start addressing those needs.
  2. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Sep 11, 2014 -> 03:39 AM) Hey, if Luhnow would take two of Danish, Montas, Hawkins then I would pick those two kids up and drive them down to Houston myself and pick McHugh up and drive him back to Chicago. Honestly, I think it would take more than two of those three kids. I would consider Anderson depending on what else Luhnow wanted. no freaking way b/c well he is own my top 10 list.
  3. QUOTE (scs787 @ Sep 11, 2014 -> 04:31 AM) The Hound!!! Avi!!! Bullpen!!! f*** Brad Pitt!!! Winner Thread!!!! Not a Whiner Thread!!!! since this is not a whiner thread, I will refrain from what I really wanted to say. however there is part of me that want to say to Oak, take that you s***es. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Sep 11, 2014 -> 04:46 AM) Nice work by Bassitt, eh? holy crap, what a game he pitch he just put himself on the map for next yr. hope for the same on the next outings.
  4. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 11, 2014 -> 04:36 AM) 1) No 2) For someone that talks about the good ol' days a lot, there sure were a lot of fights in your schools. Shameful. 3) People have more common sense than to fight about Sox vs. Cubs in school or, you know, anywhere. Otherwise we get cases like the now crippled Giants fan who was assaulted at a Dodgers game. 4) When both teams are crap, the arguments tended to swing more towards "Well, we're less awful than you." nah, I am with Greg on this one. I grew up in the 60's esp when sCrubsi had the so called magic, that they couldn't do no wrong. try imagine being the only sox fan on the block. I never ever thought of changing so I can be with the so called cool kids. I hate the sCrubs and that is why I will never change the way I call them that. I took on all comers who wanted to instill their will on me of changing teams. but you guys have to remember, children / young kids can do things that will make people scratch their head.
  5. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 11, 2014 -> 03:33 AM) He's a mystery to me. Scout I talked to - and even another player, surprisingly - commented on his defense. Not in a good way either. He really struggled. But the bat, after being really bad too, suddenly took a leap this year. thanks for the update. I really needed that, I thought that I missed something. still the offense stat is really confusing considering his past stats. ummm
  6. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Sep 11, 2014 -> 12:00 AM) Sucks. Ravelo must be hurt. I really was excited to see him get more at bats in. Great opportunity for Basto. it seems as Basto seems to have some interesting stats. I would like to see how he does this fall.
  7. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Sep 10, 2014 -> 07:51 PM) This. He's owed $89 million over the next three years. Unless the Angels are willing to throw in around $60 million, I want no part of Josh Hamilton. there is no way in hades the sox will spend that much for an over the hill, slowing down hitter that is lock for 3+ yrs with a high salary. plus there is no reason to invest that kind of commitment esp when there are major holes on the team.
  8. QUOTE (spiderman @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 11:03 AM) It's too early to guess payroll, but if they have $46M committed next season, what will that be after arbitration? Do they have enough payroll flexibility to add a proven run producer, an innings eater veteran starter for a #3 slot in the rotation and 1-2 bullpen arms, possibly a closer? That seems like a lot to do and eats into the payroll flexibility that the White Sox created. Not what I want them to do, but it does appear possible that they may be more active in free agency. I like what is being said, but I would like to question, I think and I may be wrong on the number, the number is more than 60 mil. didn't another poster run down the salary? again, pls don't take it wrong, as I said I like what you wrote.
  9. QUOTE (spiderman @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 10:59 AM) Thus far, for the most part, I like what Hahn has done. He moved payroll and has put the White Sox in position to have flexibility to make moves via free agency now that guys like Rios, Peavy, and Dunn are off the books, and he made moves for major ready talent (Davidson, Eaton), and made a splash for Abreu. I hope that Hahn sticks to a plan similar to his previous off-season. I'm not sure if they will look for another 3B or see if they can fix Davidson and stay with Gillespie for another season or if they can find a younger power hitter elsewhere. If they do a move in free agency, I hope they avoid a Victor Martinez type. I love him, but he'd help a team on the verge of winning, and is probably too much risk for a team looking to get back into the playoff mix. I fear most of his contract will be one we are hoping we didn't have. I think Flowers has done enough to earn next season as the starting catcher, and 2B is going to be an in-house option. That leaves DH, and one OF spot if you ignore 3B for obvious area's of upgrade. Pitching, again, hope to see them avoid giving out bad 2 or 3 year deals to middle relievers, but they do need to add a veteran right hander into the #3 spot in the rotation who can give us 200 IP, and a solid outing. I think that Hahn did try to find a replacement for Dunn from within the org and his name is Davidson. the problem was / is that trade last yr was a failed venture. as much as Davidson suck, I like the brass B@#$s of Hahn to address the power leaving in Dunn. Question, Davidson was only 23, he still might turn this around. but going into the offseason, if I was Hahn, I would not count of that but address other options.

our community had a sneak preview of dolphin tale 2. the movie was very good and its a family movie to boot.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 03:14 PM) Only if you go under pool with that top pick. Otherwise it has zero, or even a negative effect, like we saw with Rodon. Rodon actually cost us money we could use for later picks. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 03:02 PM) Where it really matters is in the size of the draft pool that you have to assign through the draft. A larger pool will allow you to get more high end talent later in the draft as the Sox did two years ago getting Michaeleski and Danish and this season getting Adams despite having to go over slot for Rodon. It just gives you more chances at successfully drafting a MLB level player. I will like to disagree with both and for the following reason. 1. of the top 100 rated prospects how many do the sox have rated, > 2 2. the sox nations are excited about the 3 middle infielders and young pitchers but are they going to be rated highly. no, but that are still a valuable part of the future. 3. of the 2014 draft how many more will get rated, beside Rodon which is rated>Adams maybe. botton line getting the higher pick will allow the sox to pick up a better prospects, regardless of the salary pool. unless of course it is another Scott B client. the sox need prospects, plain and simple.
  12. without taking sides, the value of any farm systems is to get several prospect at each position. if the sox able to get several leg prospects, then there is a surplus and that is where trading from strength for missing parts. however not every prospects that you identify will be a sure thing.

    The Pet Thread

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 05:37 AM) I realize this probably sounds really stupid, but my parents and I have been trying to agree on a name for the new puppy. I've always wanted the name Bailey for a dog of mine, and apparently my mom has as well. I wrote down a list of like 20 names that I liked and we sat down and went through them all. My mom said she hated every single one of them. My dad liked a couple. A week ago we finally got it down to between Zoey or Abby. My mom liked Zoey, my dad liked Abby, but neither liked the other name. I said I liked both names, but since it will really be THEIR dog and not mine, I said go ahead and name the dog whatever name you want, as long as it isn't Bailey. So my mom decides the new puppy will be named Bailey. I guess it's not fair that I "hog" this name and don't allow them to use it, so I told her how about neither one of us names our dogs that name, since we both love it so much. She said too bad, it's not my decision. Am I wrong for being so disgusted in this? It's going to piss me off every time I call this dog by her name, since it's the name I've always wanted to name my first dog. Like I told her, I'd rather neither of us use the name, but no. I'm trying to get tell myself not to give a s***, but I can't help but feel like she's just being a dick by not considering any other names instead. It's especially annoying since my dad and I have done all the work finding a dog. I am the one who located this breeder, my dad and I have sent emails and called about this person and my mom has stayed mostly uninterested each time we try and update her about a dog, even saying she is fine with not even getting a dog. We've had to convince her to get this puppy. Ugh, f***ing 1st world problems, I tell ya. pls take this with a grain of salt. if your mom asked you for an opinion, it should be regarded with out any ties. so in essence the name of the pooch is without ties. if you really didn't want to use Bailey then it shouldn't have been mention. If the dog is a female, I like "Lady". however as you said, it is your parents dog. Next, remember cherish parents, don't let something silly get in the way.
  14. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 05:46 AM) With today's Sox loss, we gained a game on..... Texas, Houston, Colorado. Sox still have the 8th pick, are 9.5 GB of Texas for the #1 pick, are 2.5 GB of the Twins for the #5 pick, and are 4 games ahead of the Reds for a protected pick. its going to be tough to get ahead of Tex esp with their schedule and 9 games ahead of everyone. but I like the race with Arz and Col. they are in the same boat as the sox. the remaining games each are just as tough as the sox.
  15. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Sep 7, 2014 -> 05:37 PM) Scott Merkin @scottmerkin · 36m Abreu already has pulled Ramirez aside and talked about really being leaders on the 2015 team to help them get to the next level Scott Merkin @scottmerkin · 35m In talking to @79JoseAbreu, you listen to a guy who is so talented and has so much but is genuinely grateful for his opportunity every day Scott Merkin @scottmerkin · 34m Abreu and Sale as the core of this franchise is a pretty darn good place to start wow, very impressive. remind me of a young Paulie when there were talks of being the next not only team leader but captain as well.
  16. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Sep 7, 2014 -> 03:34 AM) As long as there is progress record wise with this team, it's fine. Don't want us picking in the top 3 again as it shows we still haven't improved. And this is comming from one of the biggest prospect geeks on this board since I've joined. other than first or second pick, picking 3-10 at this point seems to be kind of the same pick. unless the sox will be interested in hs'ers. but like anything else forecasting prospect and their value so far in advance is a rolling dice. well for the counter agreement, there might be some prospects that develops and comes out of nowhere to surprise everyone.
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 10:14 PM) They would have to trade kemp ethier or Crawford first They have to replace Hanley Ramirez possibly They will be interested in Russell Martin They have Kershaw greinke ryu puig Adrian Gonzalez kemp not lacking star power Otoh they have Peterson Uriah ands seager to get it done prospect wiseThey also need to improve back end of the pen ummm ahhh you do know I was using the Dodgers as an example to make a point. right
  18. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 09:16 PM) I'm saying that we don't know that they tried and failed to acquire him. All we know is that there are rumors that they discussed him. Maybe they liked him on paper but then got more intel about his personality and balked. Who knows? I certainly don't. But I DO know that is a rare occasion in which we were involved in a three way deal WITH said player we were rumored to like, WHEN we desperately needed a CF, and when the centerpiece of the trade came from us -- and we still didn't end up with the guy. It's not often you know for a fact that you have what it takes to get a guy because another team got the guy on your assets. We DID give up what we had to give up, minus a couple random relievers, and we got some org filler and the right to not pay Mark Teahen instead. Given how small that return is, it's hard to believe that they weren't willing to trade it for a young pre-arb CF with upside, unless they found something out about that player that made them believe he wasn't worth the trouble. Neither you or I really know how they feel or what really was discussed in the room, I'm just saying this is WAY more evidence than we almost ever have that the Sox were able to get a guy that made sense but chose not to do it. Given that Rasmus is a substantially less attractive asset than at any time in the past, it seems to me that the ship has sailed. But we'll see -- I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong if he suits up with us. on a serious side, more and more is coming to light than what I read. wow, Ramus must be carry a lot of baggage. it doesn't matter what that baggage is. I would like to see how fa season plays out and I am sure there will be more coming out.
  19. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 08:44 PM) Soxtalk has been trying to trade for Rasmus since like 2006. A couple lesser posters were involved in the deal but when the Cards asked for Balta and Greg...well we all know what happened. I am not taking sides but this was great.
  20. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 1, 2014 -> 02:02 PM) The 3B was still at his normal spot. One of the OF was with the 2B, SS, and 1B on the right side. re the 4 man shift ..... that was unbelievable, why not lay down a bunt to the right side or as greg said slap hit it
  21. I was reading mlb trade rumors and snippet of the Phil maybe looking to trade Domonic Brown or something to that affect. question, I wonder what it would take for the sox to trade for him? I mean a very realistic offer to Philly. why would Philly want to trade him?
  22. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 08:09 PM) Until the Rangers take the contract off their hands, lol. It still makes me angry that Texas made that Fielder deal. If I'm Dombrowski, I give him the curse of the QO and leave a two year deal on the table for him after he tests the market. Very few AL teams will give up a first round pick for the right to pay a 37 year old DH with bad knees for 3 years. Red Sox and Yankees certainly won't. A's and Rays certainly won't. Indians? I bet he'd choose the Tigers if it's close. ah man, that is soo devious, I like it.
  23. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 06:50 PM) Again, actions speak louder than words. If you want to cite some trade rumors as making me "just wrong," you can, but the reality is we had the bullets to get him (the centerpiece of the deal WAS our bullet) and we moved $10m of dead weight contracts instead. If he wasn't worth Edwin Jackson and a couple of relievers to us before, he isn't worth anywhere close to his free agent contract to us now that he's older and more disappointing. When presented with "Colby Rasmus or $10m," we chose $10m. *cough cough hmmm that was harsh. but it needed to be said. good job
  24. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 03:33 PM) Yea you probably will be in the minority. I like Aoki and I think he can be a good piece on a contending club (such as he is with the Royals), but I do not think he can be THE piece to make a team a contender. If he is our big splash offseason pickup, we aren't going anywhere next year either. I'm really hoping they make a play for Rasmus. He's kind of fallen out of favor with the Jays (they haven't even been starting him recently) so he will almost certainly be looking to move and with his sub par season his cost will probably drop. I think he gives good power from the left side (20-25 homers), plays good defense with a great arm and has plus speed. A starting lineup of him, Eaton and Garcia could be pretty potent. there are several factors to consider. players on the team that needs to be move and getting a player who can be your DH or another player to play a position. spending a limited amount on Aoki, movie DV to dh then spending on pitching. as someone mention, the sox may not spend huge in the free agent market, but fixing up holes and buying some time is what I am looking at.
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 05:38 PM) From what I understood earlier this year, the contractual situation relates not to the Dodgers and Time Warner, but between Time Warner and the other TV providers in the area who are fighting the high rates being charged for the channel that carries Dodgers games. Basically the Dodgers/Time Warner contract is done, and Time Warner stands to lose a huge amount of money on that contract because they've been unable to bully the rest of the TV Providers int he LA Area to carry the Dodgers channel. so the situation has been resolve. ok, I was ref the black out they had until the situation was taken care of.
