FutureSox interviews Olympic medalist Eddy Alvarez
LDF replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 09:04 PM) Age makes zero impact with this player. He took over 3 years off. So equate his development to a 21 year old as that is the experience he has. You will find no one who will work as hard as he does. I am with you, plus, he is a silver medalist in another sport. this is like following 2 dreams. -

QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 05:47 AM) I want the highest draft pick possible, this year was never about wins or losses but the development of its young players and looking at the seasom I would call it a success. To me they're still rebuilding and wont be competitive till 2016 at the earliest and while there have been great strides made in the scouting and player development department since Hahn took over from Kenny, (With the hiring of Marco Paddy, the past three draft classes (Hawkins, Anderson, amd Rodon)) the farm system is not as deep as we think it is and in my opinion and it still could desperately use another top 5 pick/INTL bonus pool to really cement the overall long term health of the franchise. Im not saying your guaranteed to draft a great player when you have a high pick (Gordon Beckham, Josh Fields, Joe Borchard, Bryan Anderson), but when you have a higher pick you have more money to spend in the draft and the INTL market, so your chances of getting a great player in your farm system is greater. having the higher draft pick does help in the selection of the elite prospects. look at this past draft, what would have happen if the sox would have picked 10, no Rodon. Look at the sCrubs farm system they are loaded. as of today with what we see for next yr draft, there is a difference between Michael Matuella and any predicted pitcher outside the top 10. it is huge. so yes I want to have the sox do good, but my selfish side wants them to bomb, for the higher draft pick. second re: Beckham, I really like him but he was good enuf to make it to the majors, but as of today, he stalled. I went back to look at his draft class, how many other prospect was there after is selection that did great? I know I am talking about hindsight. -

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 05:16 AM) Yeah, I wouldn't count on that. Baez's ceiling is way higher than Semien's. The only way Semien has a better/longer major league career is due to each of their plate disciplines. Semien has a ton, and Baez has virtually none. I would say Semien has the higher floor, Baez has the higher ceiling. a great answer, I now have an answer to my unasked question that's been bothering me for yrs. after rereading this, this may come across like a jerk, but I am serious about the question and your statement ties up a great discussion. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 02:12 AM) I truly don't care about team payrolls cause I have no sympathy for owners who blatantly rip off the fans. That said, I laugh at this Choo contract. Look what he produced this year for all that $$. Owners of sports teams are so stupid. They set the market for this crap. THE CASE FOR CHOO -- Rangers signed him to 7 year, 130 mill deal last winter (hilarious). He's finished for the season in which he hit .242 with 13 home runs, 40 RBIs. So is some advanced-stat lover going to tell me his on base percentage of .340 makes him worth that cash?? In football, he'd be cut so fast this offseason it'd make your head spin. supply and demand. there are team that are stuck with players with $$$ laden contracts that they can't get rid off. I bet a lot of owners who will become like JR, who may not invest in those long contracts. I don't know, don't you feel that the sox had 2 big contracts that they may have regretted?

I have this discussion many yrs ago either on this board or the other sox board. bottom line I really can't fathom a player will be willing to lose on purpose. too much like losing for money. that and the pride the players have. now the flip side, the problem with a team that is inconsistent like the sox, the lineup or screwing up a lineup by accident, can have the desire effect. -

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 06:50 AM) Last year at this time, #3 wouldn't have been enough for Rodon. true and I still believe that 2 factors happen. 1 Rodon agent wanting max money 2 using some of the allotted draft money to sign other drafted players. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 06:59 AM) People get on me for being repetitious. What about you? We get it. You are not embarrassed by the pathetic play of your favorite team and want them to lose to get a better phantom draft pick. Why do you have to offend me by posting that fact all the time. Just.Win.White.Sox. hey greg, I enjoy reading your post, but this time you are wrong. be cool. peace -
QUOTE (hi8is @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 07:29 AM) Another perspective not yet voiced is this: The Sox and Hanh believe they are in position to contend for 2015 and believe Rodon can be a huge piece in moving towards contention. With a cup of coffee this year, he can wet his beak and be all the more preped for better contributions next season. When you think about it - this process is actually a distinct possibility. Sign a number 2 type RHSP, tighten up the outfield, grab a new DH, and put together a nice pen... You've got yourself a playoff team ladies and gentlemen. One that could even go all the way should the baseball Gods decide it to be so. The thought of Sale, Shields, Qunitana, Rodon, and Noesi/Johnson/Danks makes me very very happy. An outfield of Garcia / Eaton / X would be groovy, health permitting. Abreu ( believe it or not ) STILL can improve. I believe we can count on a boost from second base WAR with Beckham out next year. Alexi seems to be returning to his 08/10 levels. Gillaspie is highly underrated and could become an affordable fixture. Flowers may indeed have a spot on a playoff team and I'm not counting out an upgrade at catcher during the winter. With Dunn gone finally we sure can expect to see an improvement there as well. Hell, even Paulie going off to his 16,000 square foot oasis in the desert improves our bench. Give me a bullpen and 2015 looks rosie enough for us take a MAJOR stride forward.... So, BRING IT! as I been saying forever. I myself like lester, sign the new Cuban > dh him with some time in rf. pick up 2 pen pitchers via fa, and here is a question mark, do you want to go with a season as eaton playing without a backup. in case of an injury?

QUOTE (hi8is @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 08:16 AM) That is always a goal. Gotta always keep the n00bz on their toes, yo! as always, another classic from the one and only hi8is. I do truly enjoy it.

QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 05:10 AM) With this pen I expect us to have the 5th pick I really hate to be a killjoy here, but that is not good enuf for Matuella nor Kirby. but in essence, this ticker tape countdown is exciting and serves as a great reminder on the positive side of loosing. -

I have been thinking, if / when the sox makes the improvement that is needed, I can see them keeping Flower at starting catcher. the reason, there is really no help in the FA market, to trade for a catcher, I really don't envision the sox using what limited resources they may have in the minors. waiver list, are there really a better catcher than Flowers at this point. if this team gets help and remodeled, I can live with Flowers. but they better draft some catchers for the future. -

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Aug 24, 2014 -> 10:56 PM) I love the Schebler idea. Not sure how much the Dodgers would like it tho. Maybe Hahn could sweet talk LA into including Schebler with Kemp's high salary but I have no clue what the Sox would offer up or how much of Kemp's salary the Sox would be taking. Keep Eaton in CF and rotate Kemp, Schebler and Avi between RF, LFand DH. I'm just throwing s*** out there. either way, the sheer thought of his salary alone would make this a tough pill to swallow, even for me. -
QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 03:00 AM) I called the Sox a million times, and they said they don't offer internships in the scouting department. that would have too good, working for your team. I wonder why they don't offer internships.

QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 04:14 AM) There are 6 players who are having good years at Triple A and deserves to the September call ups: Rodon, Mitchell, Semien, Wilkins, Taylor and Phegley. Of the 6, Rodon, Wilkins and Taylor are not on the 40 man roster. I'd think Davidson gets the call as well given our investment in him. It'd be interesting to see who actually gets called up in a week. P.S. I would like to give credit to the FO for sticking with Mitchell and not letting him go when all hope was lost. It seems like he's at least capable of having a role on a big league team. I am a sox fan, so I want the best for all sox prospects. with that let me say, I hope he does indeed turned it around. I hope he does not flame out when he gets the call.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 03:14 AM) A little unclear, but if you're saying that we agreed to get the clock running early as part of the signing - the thought had occurred to me, but really, we paid him way over slot, nearly got hit with the penalty; that's dubious negotiating if we agreed to kick in the clock early. hey I am with you, but the sox had to pay the devil (his agent) in order to get Rodon to sign on the dotted line. that is one of his demands, get the clock started. he think the draft is unfair. some one who is more knowledgeable can answer more.

QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 02:16 AM) Thanks, and I might have a interview coming up with the Cubs for a intern/scouting position even tho I really dislike the them, I will wish you nothing but the best
-
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 01:49 AM) I still don't know why the Sox are hell-bent on rushing him this year. He had a long college season. Take it easy; save the service time. As it is, in the small sample size, he's walking too many - something to work on. my guess is several reasons, 1 terms of his signing, 2 his agent 3 to start he clock running.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 01:27 AM) Probably right. Quite a coincidence that the two best prospects from the draft this year are on Chicago team. Rodon and Schwarber (sp?) for Cubs. question, why not adams of the sox, second rounder.

QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 07:21 AM) I have been busy with school and work, and I promised these write ups, so I am going to post a few at a time I have more saved in a document somewhere, but when I'm free expect to see more. Joshua, its ok, we will have a long offseason to enjoy what you write. for me, I appreciate what you do.

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Aug 24, 2014 -> 11:22 AM) I pretty much feel the same way and its rather bitter sweet. I'm really only interested in the core guys and the youngsters in the minors that could be part of the team for years to come. If the Sox are going to suck then suck bad snuff to get a top 11 protected draft pick and allow Hahn the benefit of possibly signing a big FA without losing their first rounder. well Lester and Masterson will not cost anything come free agent time. positional players may be a different depending if the sox will go that route. here is a question, if Max Scherzer does not get a QO from Det, would you sign him for something like 25-30 mil? -
thanks goes to everyone who posted updates on Anderson. any new update on his defense?

QUOTE (beautox @ Aug 24, 2014 -> 12:27 AM) Honestly I'm with both of you I meant #roadtocameron in jest. I would prefer the sox pick the Duke stand out. Great command of his fastball that can hit 97 a great 12-6 curve, a good feel for his changeup and a potential average slider. Sign me up. oops, sorry. yeah Michael Matuella has an intriguing package of skills. 2 things come to my mind, who is his advisor and will he be avail for the sox to pick when its time to pick. Virginia is a power house they are forecast to have 3 high first rounder. when the high school kids pick for recruitment time, Virginia replenished their systems again.
