Sox land Liriano
QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 10:13 PM) funny thing is that the sox basically killed his trade value by lighting him up the other day lol That was KW's plan haha

Does Morel now come up?

Sox land Liriano
Great move. We lose nothing. Escobar might have a 10-plus-year career, but it's gonna be as a light-hitting starter, but most likely utility player. Hernandez is garbage. Let's hope Liriano finds his filthiness once again.

7/27 Games
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 09:01 AM) I'm not a fan of Thompson. I think it's an ominous sign that his development continues to be stalled 1,300 plate appearances in. Plus, not sure he doesn't grow out of CF and moves to RF where his bat would need to get better. From the BA Hot Sheet: His defense has improved this season and according to one scout, "That guy can play a big league center field right now." I don't think defense is an issue.

Beckham - could this be it for him?
Beckham is going to be like many other former top prospects before him who couldn't perform well enough with his old team and then suddenly figures it out after a change of scenery. He is too talented, smart and confident to be a replacement-level player his entire career. It seems like a shame that he probably won't become the guy we all thought, but unfortunately it happens.

Hopefully the Brewers like Trayce Thompson's June-July power breakout. A Gavin + Trayce Thompson package (maybe another mid-level prospect) might be a really competitive offer for Greinke.

Jared Mitchell to AAA
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 07:06 AM) Here's why I think our trio of OF prospects are underrated: Mitchell - 62 BBs (3rd in Southern) Thompson - 41 BBs (9th in Carolina) Walker - 54 BBs (top 10 in SAL before promotion) Also, Thompson is currently 2nd in the Carolina League in HRs & TBs. So while he has a low BA, he's getting a ton of XBHs. Plus his BA has actually been .283 since the all-star break, which is a great sign for someone young for the league. He's a very slept on prospect. While they all have solid walk rates, they equally have horrible contact rates. If you can't make consistent contact in the minors, you will have no shot in the majors. I think they are all graded accurately. All could be solid MLBers, but all have serious flaws that could easily make it that they never make the majors or have bench careers. For comparison sake with Thompson, Chris Young was 21 years old in AA (a bad hitter's park, too) and hit: .277 AVG, .377 OBP for a .922 OPS. He added 26 HRs, 70 BBs and 129 Ks. Young had more power, a better contact rate, a better walk rate and more speed. He also was a GG-caliber defensive player. And he never really took off in the majors like people thought because of his contact (or lack thereof) skills. He had a couple good years initially, but then never could improve as pitcher's learned how to handle him. I fear Thompson is a poor man's Young. The tools wow you, but he just hit the ball consistently.

2012-2013 NBA thread
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 24, 2012 -> 08:00 PM) The truth hurts. This I what I have been saying, they have been dangling the carrot for years, and Bulls fans do our part and show up. Time to man up and stop taking the conservative approach, step outside the box and take a swing. And whatever other cliche besides "don't panic, there is a plan here" I don't know if they take the conservative plan. I think it's more they go for the grand plan and strike out. They went for LeBron and Wade, but whiffed. They would have make serious offers for Dwight, but he didn't want Chicago.

2012-2013 NBA thread
The biggest reason I hate this Bulls' 2014 grand plan is when has that ever worked in the past? 2000 we had grand plans and ended up with Eddie Robinson. In 2010, we had grand plans and missed out of the top talents. Why is the summer of 2014 going to be any different?

2012-2013 NBA thread
It seems like it basically came down to keeping Asik or keeping Taj. And in that case, there is no doubt the Bulls made the right move.

Sox trade for Brett Myers
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 02:27 PM) One would guess they would demote Reed and take the pressure off him. Santiago or Septimo...one of them will go, hopefully Hector. Could be Veal, though. Actually, just for last night, Donnie deserves another chance for nutting up. For a rookie closer, he has had a great season. Demote him? WTF.

Sox trade for Brett Myers
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 02:25 PM) I think he'll do well as a set-up man. His stuff has been impressive, and his numbers got blown up by one really bad game he had. 2.10 ERA if you take out the KC Royals game.

Sox trade for Brett Myers
QUOTE (Baron @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 02:23 PM) Itll be really interesting to see what we gave up and what his role will be here. Who cares if no one likes him? No one likes AJ. Well AJ isn't (as far as we know) a domestic abuser. People don't like Myers for the right reasons. People hate AJ because he is an agitator on the baseball diamond.

Sox trade for Brett Myers
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 02:18 PM) Well, I'm 100% sure KW talked to Gavin about him. ■11:$7M, 12:$11M, 13:$10M club option ($3M buyout) A commitment of $6.5-7 million dollars, with that buyout. One would think we didn't give up much at all to clear that buyout from their payroll obligations. So we have buyouts now for Peavy, Youkilis, Thornton and Myers now. s***. That's a s*** ton of money. Houston better be kicking in some.

Sox trade for Brett Myers
QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 02:15 PM) That would have made sense, but I think the fact that they just promoted him makes me think he's not involved. Yeah, I forgot that they just promoted him. I am just hoping it's someone I don't care about. For some reason, I love Saladino and would hate to see him traded.

Sox trade for Brett Myers
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 02:12 PM) CSN is reporting that Sox are still not confirming deal. No rumors yet as to who is involved. Rosenthal is about as good as it gets in baseball. I couldn't care less if CSN says the Sox haven't confirmed it.

Sox trade for Brett Myers
QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 02:12 PM) Anyone want to guess what we gave up? I'll mostly randomly guess Saladino. I'll go Petricka and some other A-baller.

Nice Article About the Hawk
Hawk is one of the best announcers of his time. Is he a biased, winey, sometimes annoying homer? Hell yes, but that's why we love him. He will be a HOF for broadcasting, no doubt.

Sox trade for Brett Myers
Decent veteran arm. Will surely depend on who we gave up to evaluate this deal. Myers himself should be a useful arm out of the pen. Closing experience, starting experience and still only 31 years old.

2012 Minor League Catch All thread
QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 10:46 AM) Jacob Petricka, Carlos Sanchez to AA. Erik Johnson, Daniel Wagner to High-A. AFL implications with Petricka and Sanchez reaching AA. When was the last time the Sox had a 20-year-old in AA? I wonder where the Sox see him in the future. Probably lacks the power to be a 3rd baseman, but does he have the D to play SS? Maybe he replaces Gordon is he can't get rolling in a couple years.

7/20 Games
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 10:47 AM) By most accounts, Walker has gap power that Pods and Pierre don't have. Lofton had a just-below-HOF career. I think it's a major stretch to think Walker has that in him. And Walker really hasn't demonstrated much power this year. He is looking like a solid prospect, but his K rate suggests that he still has some huge flaws (for what it's worth, Lofton never struck out more than 84 times in a season; Walker has 97 Ks in 77 games in A-ball).

Shooting in CO at Batman premiere
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 03:54 PM) Obviously this is a terrible tragedy, but now comes the overreaction from the masses. Overreaction in what way? How we need better gun control in this country so that anyone can just buy AR-15 assault rifle?

Sox sign Hanlet Otano out of DR
While the money indicates somewhat the talent of the player, I wish I knew what, if any, other teams were after these guys. To me that would be the most suggestive sign of their talents. Just hearing the generic scouting reports does nothing for me.

7/15 games
I think one of the more interesting debates in our system is how to handle our CF prospects: Mitchell, Thompson and Walker. All three have promise, but also the same major flaw: contact. I know the Sox want all three to stay in CF, but Walker should be moving up soon to High-A where Trayce is playing CF. So how do they decide to proceed with these guys? All move up a level or just move Trayce to RF? Walker is doing well at Low-A, but that should be expected from a college first-round pick. Also with the glut of raw, toolsy CFs, you gotta imagine one of them goes in some sort deal this season.
