  1. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Dec 9, 2006 -> 10:33 AM) The article is not that bad, but it is funny how they put a spin on "only having 3 players under contract in 2009." That's actually incorrect since MacDougal just signed an extension. It is 4 players under contract, but another 10-12 players will still be under the Sox control (Arb/Res) in 2009. That is 12-16 players that are currently on the roster, and that may go up with Buehrle, Dye, and Iguchi still out there for 2007 contracts. Also, 3 players that don't have contracts in 09 are bench players (Cintron, Mack, and Pods). FA after 2007 - Dye, Iguchi, Buehrle FA after 2008 - Cintron, Crede, Garland, Pierzynski, Pods, Uribe, Vazquez It looks like next offseason will be more important than this offseason with several positional players and starters in their last contract year. probably that is what stuck in my craw out of it the most, kind of a silly spin IMO, that and failing to mention where they are at, and likely will be at in the grand scheme of payroll
  2. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...-home-headlines This article completely ignores that the Sox will likely have a top 10 payroll again this year, and acts like they will just let everyone walk and not sign any veterans ever again.... This article really ticks me off. I just expect this in the local media all year, Cubs spent a ton of money in the offseason, so that means they dramatically improved and made the right moves, Sox didn't (although, as stated above, they'll still have a strong payroll) so they will suck this year. (Mods, if I missed this link somewhere else, please merge)
  3. alot of this is reaction to the "espn'ing" of baseball. ESPN decided to dump a ton of focus on the winter meetings, and write and report winner/loser segments after they were over.
  4. My heart skipped a beat when I thought it said Juan
  5. QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 8, 2006 -> 09:10 AM) And I'm saying that whatever caused things to turn south, Foulke did not falter due to pressure. He suprised me in Boston in '04. I was a Keith fan with the White Sox, but in pressure situations he didn't do so well (I remember a game against Minny down the stretch that was a crippler) But like I said, he stepped up in Boston, so if he's healthy I would love to see KW give him a shot
  6. QUOTE(philadelphia sox fan @ Dec 8, 2006 -> 08:52 AM) http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2690859 He isn't the same pitcher he was in Oakland, but with the Sox dealing starters like there's no tomorrow, a bullpen slot is bound to open up. Why not pick him up, see what he can still do without the pressure of Fenway? man, KW moves 1 SP and a rumor, which KW denies got as far as it seems, and suddenly there's no tomorrow...
  7. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 04:09 PM) Looks to me like speculation from someone who is trying to give insight when they dont know enough about the situation. I tend to agree with you, this is the first I've heard about any possible cut in payroll.
  8. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writ...coop/index.html 2nd page of this story says KW is trying to cut payroll!??!?!?! I mean, I guess with the FG deal it is possible, but I would really want an explination from him or JR why they are cutting payroll this year
  9. QUOTE(whitesoxin @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 03:03 PM) The Cubs pick up a former #1 pick in the Rule 5, and we have to give up Freddy to get a former #1 pick? if this is the guy I'm remembering, this guy has had a vicious drug problem and was out of baseball for awhile, so comparing him to a #1 pick who is 23 years old does not equate
  10. the 10m he saved on this deal is huge to me, KW needs to put this to good use, no reason for a salary dump I would like them to add a quality backup catcher. AJ is the man, but he needs to catch less games next year
  11. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 02:16 PM) http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prosp...ews/262980.html they then traded him to the Reds for cash... http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/base...t.ap/index.html
  12. QUOTE(PK14 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 01:39 PM) Don't the Sox hit Meche really well? well, I think his ERA was around 5.00 last year, so it seems the whole league hits him really well
  13. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 12:23 PM) Money isn't disclosed yet, but Gil Meche is going to the Royals with a 5 year deal. Unless he's getting like $4 million a year, I take back every compliment I've given to the new Royals GM. This deal = insanity for that team. oh, it's around 10m a year I believe
  14. saw a few things about Bonds to the Cards, I guess that would make the most sense. He would have to hobble around LF for one more year, but those fans are incredibly supportive of the Cards players. It's like a baseball rejuvination machine out there. I could see them embracing him and the chase. (just for source purposes, si.com had something mentioned i believe)
  15. QUOTE(bschmaranz @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 12:02 AM) Break an attendance record.... rebuild!? That would be a MAJOR problem for me. I'm not saying they have to run out and mimic the Cubs and throw a ridiculous amount of money at Soriano and Lily types, but if they are saving 10m, and don't improve CF/LF it would blow my mind. If he would have traded FG, then signed Dave Roberts to a similar deal he got, that would make sense. In my opinion this team needs upgrades, and bringing back the same team minus FG after the attendance last year would upset me as a Sox fan
  16. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 11:05 PM) Please, please, please re-sign Mark. damn, but if Lily got 10 for 4 years, I can't imagine what Mark would get on the open market (and no matter what is shoved down our throat by the Cubune and Levine, Lily is not a great pitcher by any stretch)
  17. QUOTE(G&T @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 11:03 PM) This was a full quote from CBS Sportsline in case it clarifies things for you. still a touch confusing, I guess he's saying the "first step" is this offseason and not his future 5 year board. If I'm reading it right, he's basically saying other moves are coming
  18. QUOTE(shoota @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:57 PM) What does that mean?? To me it means KW has other things on the stove, and did this move to acquire more minor league pitching and clear salary for another move (at least that's what I hope!)
  19. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:45 PM) Our 2-7 is good...it's the other 33 pct that worries me about our offense. We can't go into this season hoping that Dye/Thome/PK produce the way they have, and I'm worried that AJP is on the decline already. I know this isn't a thread about Cubs/Sox comparisons, but the Cubs line-up strikes out WAY too much for my liking. It's really noticable in innings 7-9, if a team has a quality bull-pen, they come in and the Cubs K like there's no tomorrow. Cubs have a great fantasy line-up, but with a ton of Ks and not a great OBP, they don't do much for me on the field
  20. QUOTE(Soxman72 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:43 PM) Didn't Ozzie talk to the press about trading starting pitching. He said that A-Rod is the "type" of player that they would want for a starter. Rowand, who he loves was not the "type" of player that they would trade starting pitching for. I believe I saw this on Comcast. I am asking myself - These two minor league players are the "type" of players we get for a starter - What changed? I am hoping that KW's quote about The White Sox are still open for business is his way of telling us to wait out this B.S. where did you see this? This gives me some hope
  21. QUOTE(longshot7 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:42 PM) Floyd to the bullpen, right? He's not gonna start, right? Someone reassure me. maybe back to AAA, unless B-Mac gets moved in a larger deal he'll be in the rotation
  22. I can't wait to see video of KW's reaction to this. If he has that "ticked off" KW attitude basically calling out the fans and how nobody knows what was out there, I'll be concerned. But if he's coy and playfull, something else is coming.
  23. Man, if KW thought Soxfest was rough a few years ago... if he's done for the offseason, he should just go ahead and skip this year
  24. QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:32 PM) well since this saves some money we better see another quality player get signed. I echo that, they can't have a salary dump move after the attendance last year, that would be in horrible faith.
  25. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:25 PM) Someone explain how this makes any sense, because i'm not seeing it: yeah, I didn't quite get that either, I just saw SPs getting snapped up for ridiculous prices (the Lily at 10 a year is insane, and Cubune and Levine can spin that all they want) I thought FG would be in more demand, but I guess the 1 year left killed his value a lot, he's a rent a player
