2010-11 MLB Offseason Catch-All
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 31, 2010 -> 04:02 PM) Interesting. Heyman saying he's getting around $8M for the one year. Apparently LaRoche was looking for a 3 year deal at $21M, so BAL went to Lee. they're not sure on the 8m number, he turned down 8.5m from Pads, but he also could have taken less to play in Camden Yards for one year instead of Petco

didn't feel this one, but I did feel the one about a year or so ago

Teixeira: Pettitte Leaning Toward Retirement
Even if he comes back the I'm not blown away by the Yankees rotation. If he comes back he really needs to be a front line 200+ inning starter, it's not like they can carry him through a season and make sure he's 100% for the playoffs, they'll need him to get to the playoffs... obviously he has the track record of being an effective pitcher and it's not like he relies on blistering fastballs, but he'll be 39 during the season and has gone from 194 to 129 innings the last 2 seasons. It will be interesting, I say he comes back because the NYY will make him an insane offer because barring a good trade for them, they kind of need him. Also, it's not like they have a dominating BP as of today outside of Mariano, they lost Wood who was excellent for them last year and Joba is a crapshoot. So it's not like they can limit him to 5-6 innings a start and turn it over to a lockdown BP

Got to love ESPN, Scott Van Pelt had to do a one minute intro about how awesome Vick was before he questioned his play tonight

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 28, 2010 -> 10:31 PM) Lovie currently has said he'll prepare his guys with the plans that they're going to play a normal game. That said...they said exactly the same thing in 2006 going into a meaningless game against the Packers, and Grossman had a 0 QB rating. ah yes, that was when I believe Rex actually admitted he was worrying about his New Years Eve party plans and not the game plan. With a guaranteed bye, I would like to see the regulars play at least a 1/2

QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 28, 2010 -> 10:27 PM) I wonder how the Bears will approach Sunday's game. The Giants are pretty much screwed if the Bears end up sitting some guys. NFL is wacky and anything can happen, but with the 2 meaningful games to the bears at 12 and bears at 3, they should have no chance at the 1st at that point, so we'll see what Lovie does

Grad Students and those that have finished . . .
QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 28, 2010 -> 10:12 PM) Wouldn't the student loans be differed until out of school? I assume then that you didn't have a car? I am leaning toward urging him strongly into a PhD program from the start, but he has his goals set on UT-Austin. they can be deferred while in school, and I did have a car, it was just an OK car that got the job done.

the loan route is one people have to seriously consider. I have a decent amount from law school, but my dad co-signed and I have good credit as well... also, with things like .5 point off for direct withdraw I have/had 25-30 years to pay it off at a low rate... on paper it's a lot, but managable for me

2010 Fall TV Thread
QUOTE (That funky motion @ Dec 28, 2010 -> 09:39 PM) I was going to watch that. Thanks for the heads up. well if you have DVR might be worth it if you have some interest in it, but honestly, the items people bring in aren't interesting and the family it's based around come off alternating between uninteristing and dicks.

2010-11 MLB Offseason Catch-All
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 24, 2010 -> 07:41 AM) It was like 5 in the morning, but it's still pretty damn hard to see him at that point in time. And considering it was 5 in the morning, it's assumed that Stallworth had waited until he thought he was sober, so there was atleast an attempt to be responsible. As Jas mentioned, the dude who killed Adenhart (and 2 others) was absolutely bombed, because it was like the peak of the night. Drinking and driving is stupid. You think the worst you can get slapped with is a slap on the wrist, lose your license, maybe spend a couple nights in jail and then BAM, you're in prison. Just stupid, stupid, stupid. Stallworth settled with the family of the victim a little after the criminal sentence was final, but I believe I read the terms were in place for the settlement before the criminal matter was resolved... while obviously it doesn't have a direct effect on the prosecutor, it makes a difference because you didn't have the family of the victim pressuring the prosecutor to throw the book at him. Stallworth's attorney publicly were confident they could have beaten it, but said he pleaded guilty to do what was "morally right." Also, he ran the risk of a harsher sentence than what he got if a judge or jury (not sure how it goes in FL) sentenced him after a trial. Although I believe it was FL also where the ex-NYY just got acquitted of the homicide charge stemming from his DUI and that fact pattern was more horrific (obviously both terrible because somebody died). Yes DUIs are not worth it, I was a public defender for 2 years and for a good portion was in the courtroom that handled DUIs. It is way cheaper and less of a hassle to get your car towed, a 50 mile taxi ride or a hotel room, hell in some cases a helicopter ride would be cheaper.

MMA Thread
and Overeem is fighting Todd Duffee on New Years Eve in Japan for Dream. Yes, that Todd Duffee. Just points out a major problem for me with SF, their HW champ, who has fought for them 1 time since 11/07, is fighting a name that he will 99.9% likely crush and is recognizable to some casual fans due to his UFC run in Japan on NYE for a different org. Also, Nick Diaz vs. Cyborg Santos (the husband, not the wife) to main event the 1/29 card, not Diaz vs. Mayhem which many people want to see.

Food poisoning
I hadn't had food from a fast food place in months, and probably Jimmy John's for about a year, I got it yesterday and heard on TV that they are recalling their sprouts, which were on my sandwich, because of salmonella reports. It's been about 24 hours and I feel fine, so hopefully I avoided. Yeah, food poisoning is terrible, comes out of nowhere and just wrecks you.

Advertising Fail
QUOTE (onedude @ Dec 21, 2010 -> 03:54 PM) McDonalds commercial with the Mocha caramel hand tap s***....makes me puke. I haven't ate at a Mcdonalds in 2 years...but that commercial isn't why I dislike that commercial too, but mostly because the whip cream on top of the cups doesn't move and looks completely disgusting

Official 2010-11 NFL Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 20, 2010 -> 11:23 AM) I fully realize what frozen ground feels like, and that the ground is much harder. Still doesn't change my view. You are playing football in December. No one likes it of course. But if you think you should somehow never have to do that, you shouldn't be playing professional football. I definitely agree with the ones who are pointing out the NFL being hypocrites about concussions. They have stressed their concerns about concussions all year, but now they are going to let teams play on a surface that increases the potential for concussions.

Dunn on Baseball Tonight....
QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ Dec 17, 2010 -> 11:25 PM) He was horrible! He blew 4 saves last year. The Sox will miss him. Believe it or not Thornton, Santos or Sale are gonna blow saves, too. They might blow more. wow, closers are going to blow saves?!?!!? Not saying Bobby is going to be terrible next year, but he was a closer/reliever that was most effective going 3 outs and no breaks between innings. Will he be missed? who knows, not of the new closer is effective and the bullpen is effective for a cheaper price. He signed with Bos for 2/12, who knows what he would have been looking for here.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 17, 2010 -> 08:46 PM) I guess what I'm pointing out is that his goals might have changed since the NTC was bargained for. true, I don't think any of us know, what I'm pointing out is maybe he changed to wanting a long term extension to waive it and didn't feel his original agent was the right person for that job. Again, KC could get a great offer from one of the other 15 teams that are willing to take the 2 years and see what happens. A lot has to play out in this for it to happen.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 17, 2010 -> 08:34 PM) Hard to laugh at Hendry for this one considering we were right there offering the same contract basically. Just got lucky Fukudome wanted to play for a team that had never had a Japanese player before. not just singling this one contract out, Hendry has some bad contracts on that team, Fukudome is only one of them
