  1. QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ May 21, 2006 -> 11:31 AM) Sox must like Montero's power stuff. Either that, or they just really dislike Logan's brain cramps and wildness stuff.
  2. QUOTE(Beltin @ May 21, 2006 -> 10:46 AM) What's amazing in all of this is for the past few years since the Cubs picked up Barrett, all I have heard about is what a tough, hard-nosed player he is and how he is a throwback to the old tough catchers of yesteryear. Meanwhile, he doesn't even know the rules of baseball and took a cheap shot at AJ in the process. Further, he pulled another classless stunt several games back and no one mentions his reputation as a punk. Yet, AJ basically fits the hardnosed description always given to Barrett and is looked at as a pariah. It jus doesn't make sense to me. Thats the funny thing. Mariotti basically justifies Barrett's cheap shot because of AJ's reputation, yet says nothing of Barrett's tendency to lose his cool and overreact to seemingly harmless situations. But my favorite part of Mariotti's story is his dopey argument of Barrett being "deeply religious", as if he has more credibilty because of this. I don't want to turn this into an argument of the virtues of faith or whatever, but since when are "deeply religious" people void from making stupid decisions or acting like jerks? Either way, maybe Barrett simply forgot about God right before he punched AJ in the jaw. Thats ok, since he's deeply religious, well, he must have been in the right. Give me a f***ing break. Maybe Barrett is a good guy, and from his reaction after the game, I think he handled it the right way. But what he did on the field shouldn't be defended. Unless you feel like you have to defend yourself, there is absolutely no justification for punching somebody in the face. And if AJ's reputation was indeed the reason Barrett punched him, then I think its Barrett's reputation that should be in question.
  3. QUOTE(Cuck the Fubs @ May 19, 2006 -> 02:24 PM) What'd he say? He said your namesake, just with proper spelling.
  4. Stone essentially said that successful teams want to win at all costs and that the Cubs aren't one of those teams. He sounded pretty angry during the interview. It was pretty hilarious.
  5. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ May 19, 2006 -> 01:42 PM) Whats on Jenks shirt? Cave's Crew...as in bullpen coach Art "Cave" Kusnyer.
  6. Most of you probably already heard this one, and I know this quote may be interpereted differently out of its original context, but it still deserved to be posted anyway: "f*** the Cubs." - Ozzie Guillen, May 18, 2006
  7. Were those homers on simulated pitches or real pitches?
  8. Post from Cuck the Fubs coming in 5, 4, 3, 2....
  9. QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ May 17, 2006 -> 11:43 PM) Mesa beans some f***stick and nobody says s***. But now because it is Bonds being intentionally hit -- it is somehow a 'disgrace to baseball' and Life As We Know It will cease to exist because St. Barry took a ball in between the shoulder blades, took off his gear and walked to 1st base. If intentionally hitting players is so very bad, then how come all the whiners now didn't say Word One when there had been previous HBP this season when it has been intentional? First of all, I'm not seeing a whole lot of Barry love in this thread. Those who are calling out Springer have been pretty adement that they hate every inch of Barry Bonds. That doesn't make it right. And I cant speak for anybody else, but I would have had no problem if he was just pegging him to get a message across. But it appeared to me like he was trying to peg him in the head, and that just aint cool. I don't care how big of a dick Bonds is. Whatever he did to Springer that pissed him off so much couldn't have been bad enough to warrant a career threatening shot to the head. Once again, I have no love lost for Bonds. But there has to be a better way to get the point across. I thought the first pitch did that just fine.
  10. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ May 17, 2006 -> 11:31 PM) I would feel terrible for almost any player beaned in the head whose career was ruined by it. I would not lose my marbles, however, because the pitcher aimed at the guy's skull. Duck for cover if you're the batter. And, if AJ was beaned and had his career ruined, I'd feel terrible because I love AJ, but I wouldn't throw a fit over it and lost all control about how UNFAIR it was for the pitcher to bean him. Beanball. Hello? Shot to the head. Pitchers pitching AT batters is nothing new, and neither is the practice of aiming at their heads. That's why there's the term "headhunter." A beanball war when it is meant to send a message is indeed part of baseball. I can deal with that. If one of your guys appears to have been beaned on purpose, a retaliation to protect your players is sometimes necessary. But there is a big difference between sending somebody a message by pegging a batter in the back, or flat out aiming for a guys head with the intent of severely injuring him. And IMO, Springer crossed that line. Headhunting is NOT a part of baseball, and if Springer was indeed just sending a message, he would have stopped after he threw the ball behind Bonds on the first pitch...point proven, now try to get him out. Instead, he came up and in several more times and appeared to be aiming for the cranium. A beanball war has its place. Its part of the heat of competition. And while headhunting occurs from time to time, that doesn't mean that it should be, or currently is accepted as "part of baseball." Its dirty and its just a dick thing to do. If Springer was indeed aiming for Bonds's melon, then I have just about the same respect for him as I do for Bonds.
  11. QUOTE(Cuck the Fubs @ May 17, 2006 -> 02:29 PM) No. Hit him in the head with a 100 mph fastball and get it over with. While I think Bonds is the only player who deserves to get hit, I still believe that whoever hit him should be suspended, b/c MLB needs to be consistant, and can't allow it to be a 2-way street Not exactly sure why disliking somebody equates to wishing harm to his well being, simply because he's a jerk. I don't like you, but I seriously don't wish you any ill will. Bonds is a prick, but lets not act as if he killed your cat.
  12. QUOTE(retro1983hat @ May 17, 2006 -> 10:29 AM) The Sox should be ashamed at themselves for letting this guy go and allowing DJ to take his job. Why should they be ashamed? I'd say regret would be a better word. I liked Wimpy, and it was a mistake to let him go, but I doubt the Sox lost any sleep over it. I'm sure Wimpy hasn't.
  13. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ May 17, 2006 -> 12:39 PM) You're preaching to the converted, dude. I'm saying that it transcends baseball--like I said, it's a cultural thing. Mathematically no it is not as significant, but that's not the point. But if you're talking about attendance and hype and media attention and passion--you're damn right they're bigger than any Central opponent game--have you not been to one? You'd know what I'm talking about. Been to quite a few. They are fun, and I enjoy the crosstown games as much as the next person. I just fail to see how we as Sox fans would put beating the Cubs as such a high priority. Beating them is nice cause I really dont like the Cubs, but I think we have much bigger fish to fry these days. I understand the cultural thing and all, but with a World Championship in hand and more in our sights, the Sox/Cubs series seems a little melodramatic. Yes, it gets a lot of hype and media attention, probably moreso than the more important series. I'm just saying that our franchise has gotten to the point where this shouldn't mean so much to us Sox fans. Its this constant need to show everybody that we are better than the Cubs that makes us look kinda silly. But I guess I did miss your point. In regards to media attention, fan interest and hype, yes, it probably beats any other regular season series. My response was more directed to the 1300 or so people (according to the poll) and the seemingly 15% of our fanbase that still dwells on having a superiority over the Cubs above all else.
  14. QUOTE(Kalapse @ May 17, 2006 -> 11:55 AM) You are nuts. Andruw Jones Carlos Beltran Vernon Wells Grady Sizemore Just to name a few. Torii Hunter Jim Edmonds ...to name a couple more.
  15. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ May 17, 2006 -> 10:57 AM) C'mon guys these games are bigger than baseball--this is a cultural thing. It is, quite frankly, the World Series of Chicago. No matter what we do afterward, bragging rights for the next year ride on this. Granted, we have the ultimate bragging rights which won't be invalid apparently in this lifetime (we actually won the WS), but no--these games are just games overall, but in Chicago it is all about Us vs. Them. So yeah I agree these are the biggest games of the season every season. Not the ONLY big games of the season, but the only thing bigger is the playoffs. And no, being swept by the Cubs would be heart-stopping for Sox fans, even if we won the WS again. Because then the twerps would say "Well, we swept the WS champions." Look on the bright side: if we beat their ass down, they have NOTHING to say this year. Are you honestly saying that these games are bigger than Cleveland, Minnesota and Detroit series in August and September? Seriously, of course I don't like the Cubs and I enjoy beating them, and if we lose I'll be pissed off (I dont like losing to anybody). But way too many people out there put too much emphasis on this series. Its fun, and its cool for the city. But with the aspirations that we have for this team, you really think this means a lot in the big picture? Especially with the disparity of success for both teams? And if you are really worried about what Cub fans will say if they beat us, here's an excellent comeback: 1908. Otherwise, you can choose to stop caring about what Cub fans think (I prefer this option).
  16. I believe the Freddy quote is in regards to his success in day games. If he played for the Cubs, he'd be pitching in a lot of day games, thus he'd have more success. As far as the quote about Wrigley, I don't know. He appears to be talking about kids entertainment at a baseball game. And if that is indeed the case, he's right. For a kid, the only thing to do at Wrigley is to watch a baseball game (a minor league game at that). The Cell offers much more when it comes to youth entertainment Either way, I don't think its much to read into. Ozzie says a lot of things when he's trying to make a point. Or to be exact, Ozzie says a lot of things.
  17. QUOTE(fathom @ May 17, 2006 -> 08:58 AM) Not a chance that Ozzie/KW will continue to play him if he's hitting under .200 all season. You're probably right. But while I think he'll eventually get over the hump, my point is that our offense is good enough to live with his dead bat at the bottom of the order. His defense is much more important to us. Of course, you want to see a little progression on offense, and I believe he is ever so slowly coming around. We'll see, I guess.
  18. Personally, if the rest of the lineup holds up their end of the bargain, and BA continues to play stellar defense, I could deal with him hitting under the Mendoza line for the rest of the season.
  19. For the record, I predicted the triple play. Hooray for me.
  20. I am so glad that we have a GM that values current production over potential. People who cream themselves over prospects make me want to eat broken glass.
  21. QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ May 12, 2006 -> 09:58 AM) I say if Brian continues to struggle with the bat, Kenny should look to get his hands on Torii Hunter, come the trade deadline. Then we could look to sign him for 3-4 years. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for seeing what Brian can do, but Torii will probably be available come July. The Twins don't have the horses this year, and probably won't want to pay him. If Torii Hunter can be an effective bullpen pitcher, then I'm all for it. Otherwise, I don't see the point.
  22. QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ May 11, 2006 -> 09:40 AM) Can the cat that did all of the charting for attendance reappear. I am to lazy to look for it but it was a cool little graph with some great detail. Two sell-outs against the Royals and 60K plus thus far in this series has got to be nice. This stems from the Trib gig about the cub attendance. What are the idiots pulling game by game. The question I have is why is our attendence being compared with the Cubs? I'd be more interested in how we are doing amongst the league average. The Cubs will outdraw us every game this year (they have a larger seating capacity and sell out every game). Their attendence figures are clearly unique considering the whole Wrigley phenomena, among other things. I don't see why the Cubs still outdrawing us is considered news.
  23. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 11, 2006 -> 09:05 AM) Bobby Jenks has blown 1 save all year....and considering K Rod was in with the lead as it was, IMO if we had to have a bullpen collapse, last night was the time for it. We can still win the series today (if the stadium doesn't float away in floodwaters) and we have the best record in baseball. The team weakness is the bullpen, but our rotation is great, Jose is only missing 1 more start, and YOU KNOW Kenny will get some help for the bullpen if we need it as much as we think. Plus Jeff Nelson will help as it is when he's ready IMO. As soon as Ozzie figures out these bullpen roles (Jenks should START innings in SAVE SITUATIONS only, don't f***ing go nuts over lefty/right), we'll be more than fine. Hell, we are fine already. I guess my point is, this isn't the pre 2005 White Sox......so there is no need to freak out and expect failure, because we don't have 88 years of failure and bad history to b**** about anymore. Remember, we have the best record in the game, and are the defending champs. That is all. (Waits for rational fans to praise me, and for the crazy bipolar fans to call me an idiot and put words in my mouth). I agree with you. I guess that makes me rational. HOORAY! Although, I will say that I don't believe there are many around here in panic mode. I'd say that its mostly concern surrounding the bullpen, and rightly so. The bullpen as a whole has been pretty mediocre. And while we may be concerned, that doesn't mean that we are in big trouble. We have fewer holes in our team than anybody else in the league, and I trust Kenny and think our few needs will be addressed when he sees the opportunity. We currently are the best in the bigs. If there are people around here who really believe the sky is falling, they need to take a deep breath. But I really believe most of the "negativity" is being overblown. I'd say at least 95% of this place is quite pleased with the current state of the team. Am I wrong?
  24. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ May 10, 2006 -> 10:16 PM) I miss the choke avatars. At least we still have the chimp.
