  1. I think it depends on what is on Kenny's mind. Still, I see no reason to move him now. I think he's the type of person you hold on...if the rebuild goes longer than expected you can always move him later on down the road imo. Plus I'm not a fan of giving up good young players when you are in a rebuilding mode (unless you get a completely ridiculous offer). Say the Braves offer up Devine, Salty and Escobar (again I said this is a completely ridiculous offer, but if they came up with it I'd than say alright we've been wowed, you now have Jenks).
  2. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jun 25, 2007 -> 10:38 AM) If we got Martinez or Gomez offered straight up for Contreras, we should accept it while we're still ahead. We'd probably have to throw in some cash, like 3 million for 08 and 09, but that would save us 14 million all together. I really don't think we could get much more then an A prospect for Contreras. In fact, we'd be lucky to get that much. If the Mets offered a B prospect and would be willing to take on his whole contract, I'd do that as well. I think it is more likely that the names that came up would involve one of Humber, Pelfrey, Milledge and if that did happen we should be exstatic to get one of them, imo. That said I always thought a lot of people on this board were undervaluing Contreras, but at the same time I still am taking a I'll believe it when i see it approach to the talk that the Mets would give up more of Contreras than Buehrle.
  3. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 25, 2007 -> 10:27 AM) My point is that the Chicago White Sox got exactly what they deserved when they signed Navarro to that contract over Clemens and Navarro blew up. Navarro had a history of putting up 5 and 6 + ERAs and then he has a couple of good years with the Cubs and we say, "Hey, let's sign him!" Buehrle is the complete opposite situation. It may stand that the Front Office will stand by their rule but I think that's idiotic, especially when all the circumstances are looked at. Navarro at 24 was throwing 234 innings for the Brewers all while posting 15 wins and a 3.92 ERA. He followed that up with a 246 inning season with 17 wins and a 3.33 ERA. The following year was a down year for him (still well over 200 innings) and than he suffered some setbacks and went to the Cubs where he posted two consecutive 200+ inning seasons with sub 4 ERA's. The guy was 29 and pretty much sans a season and a half had been a consistent 200 inning, sub 4 ERA guy. Lets not act like Navarro was some bum, this guy was pretty damn good prior to signing with the Sox.
  4. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 25, 2007 -> 10:21 AM) I want Podsednik gone, I don't give a s*** if the Sox have to include money and a prospect to unload him before the deadline. I want a 0% chance him being back next season. I have to say I like what Pods said when he came back (pretty much ripping into the team for being dead). I'd move him, but would wait until the break hoping he shows he's healthy and could provide a spark at the top of the lineup for a team. If he could do that, we could actually get some good value for Pods. I also think if Erstad got healthy you could get a mid level type prospect for him as well.
  5. Just think though...if the sox have all those draft picks, plus a top 5 pick...I'd be damn scared they'd go through the whole draft being concerned about signing bonuses and taking the easy signs opposed to for the most part the best talent.
  6. QUOTE(Beastly @ Jun 25, 2007 -> 10:07 AM) There are several people I want to write letters to. Joe West (for his god awful country singing) and Kenny Williams, for when he trades Buehrle and gets rid of the last of my favorite players. I don't want to see a crappy rotation next year. The Sox need to keep Buehrle and Garland together long-term. I can see us keeping Vazquez and letting the Count walk his 50 year old fat ass out of town eventually. Hopefully he'll be traded before the deadline. By the way, am I missing something because I am not seeing a no-trade clause for the Count or Vazquez? Contreras has a no trade clause for the remainder of the year (it was part of his extension) while Javier Vazquez simply has a list of west coast teams that he will not be traded to (otherwise he can be traded anywhere else at will by the Sox).
  7. Ya, I really can't bite on the Crede thing. Yes right now it would have been the right call but I know in the off-season my personal stance was that if you got a very strong offer move him, if you didn't, keep him. I didn't see Crede falling a part and with Dye likely moving on (this was the off-season thought process) you could have had hope that Crede would continue his progression and you could maybe come to accords and sign him to an extension (if you couldn't, you could always move him during the season or in the following off-season). The Angels were probably the only team putting much out there for Crede and I don't think talks ever got too serious because I think at that point the Angels were not going to bite and give up what the Sox would have wanted. You can also talk about dealing Garland, but Pence wasn't part of the deal (right now I'd be excited to have a guy like Pence, but at the same time Garland has been freaking fantastic for the Sox...unfortunately the club has no offense, bullpen and a stupid defense).
  8. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 25, 2007 -> 09:51 AM) Do you think a team will take a chance on him as a full time first baseman down the stretch when he hasn't really played there for two years now? If not, that narrows our options to about 2-4 teams, if that. Unfortunately I'm not sure if Cleveland would have any spot for him (and I know the Sox would hate to deal with a divisional foe that will likely be near the top of the division for a while) but the Angels clearly would have interest, Yanks could probably find a spot for him (if they found out another contender was interested) while the A's could definitely use the bat (and Thomes pay check probably fits in the A's budget). Still, that pretty much gives you the East Coast and the West Coast and I'm not sure if Thome would move to those places. If teams thought he could play first than you'd have a few more options for sure. It is going to be tough, but than again, he has to see this team falling completely apart and I still think he wants to win a ring pretty badly and he's going to realize pretty soon that just isn't possible in Chicago.
  9. QUOTE(danman31 @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 10:11 PM) Well said. The thing i look forward to most is what changes are made and what young players will come up. The thing that kills me about watching the club right now is, aside from some of the starting pitchers and Konerko/Dye/Thome/Fields I have very little reason to get any enjoyment out of the team (because it is so incredibly frustrating and there are so few young players to look at grow). When a team is bad I hope to at least be able to see glimpses of the future but right now you just see the Sox getting worse and worse and completely self destructing. I really can't wait till a few deals are made and some exciting, yet I'm sure what will be frustrating, youth comes on over. We need an influx of talent and hopefluly that influx will be good enough to allow Kenny to make some moves again this off-season and slowly get this team fueled up to at least give it a shot in the next couple years (if he does things right I think it is fully possible).
  10. Interesting. I wonder if the Mariners would have interest in doing this. They have mostly new people in since the last time he was there, otherwise I'd wonder considering how he pretty much held the franchise hostage to the point that the Reds vastly underpaid when they acquired Griffey (in terms of talent...of course Griff did end up getting hurt).
  11. I don't really care...neither team is going to win a series this year and I don't see how Cub fans can really brag (not that I give two s***s what Cub fans or any other fans thing of the team...unless of course they think we are defending world series champs cause I would like to be able to say that at least a few more times in my lifetime).
  12. Just thought we could have a fun little thread here predicting which players get moved: I am going to go with: Buehrle Contreras Dye Iguchi Uribe THOME (Yep, I think he's going to agree to be moved to a contender, but the club may have to take less in return because he has full veto power). I think in the end the Sox will hold onto AJP and Konerko (however, I think the Angels will at one point or another call up Kenny and see if they can acquire the slugging first baseman). I also don't think they'll move Thornton but Mac is a possibility. The thing is I wouldn't mind keeping most of the pen together and letting it start throwing and just hope it gets things figured out so that they know what they have and what they don't have for next year (that said, Mac and Thornton as well as Aardsma would interest some clubs)...same with AJP. Yep, I'm pretty much predicting an all out firesale. In addition, I think the first move is made by Friday.
  13. QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 25, 2007 -> 09:41 AM) What does Mark's personal life have to do with his trade talks? That is exactly what I'm wondering. I realize he's having a baby, but that isn't going to prevent the club from moving. The Sox respect Buehrle a ton and I think Buehrle respects the org a ton, however, in the end both sides realize its a business and it is probably why every start Buehrle makes could be the last we see one of my all time favorites pitch for the club.
  14. I'm guessing both sides have had some contact, they are just not publicly indicating such out of respect for one another. I hope the org only says good things when Buehrle is moved and I can only hope this off-season they try to put a lucrative deal to together to at least attempt to bring him back to the southside.
  15. QUOTE(quickman @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 08:05 PM) Please tell me why you loved the way the draft turned out this year? I prefer taking pitching prospects in general and the Sox took a lot of guys with live arms. Not only do those arms have velocity but they have a lot of action. The secondary stuff is raw, but you have a better chance of teaching secondary stuff to a pitcher than you do teaching velocity to a pitcher. I also like the fact that the Sox took guys with good builds (ie good size and weight combo's because along with mechanics, I think having a good frame will help you sustain velocity and be able to throw a lot of innings).
  16. I would love to get either one of them centered in a package around Dye. Joba is pretty high upside and I've been a big Kennedy fan since his college days.
  17. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 06:05 PM) In a Sunday Night game a month ago, Joe Morgan gave a 5 minute speech about why Sheffield is not only the best hitter in the game, but also the best clubhouse person and possibly deserving of a Nobel Peace Prize. Ya, I saw that. Joe Morgan is a freaking boob. I wanted him to shut up and just let Schurholtz talk (the best GM in baseball).
  18. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 06:00 PM) It must have pained Joe Morgan to say that Pujols was the best hitter, and not Gary Sheffield. Cough Arod Cough. Well Arod is still the best player in the game.
  19. Wow...RIP. I remember that ESPN feature and always heard Beck was just a great guy. Sad loss and thoughts go out to his family.
  20. My guess is there was some debate...Shaffer was backing ring, most of the org was backing Blanton but the org let Shaffer make the call and he opted with his guy (afterall while Kenny has the final call, when it came to the draft Shaffer really was the guy who for the most part is making the call). I just know one thing...I freaking loved the way the draft worked out for the club this year.
  21. That seems awful shady. If Kenny and the org told the Shaffer to take Blanton and he took another guy than I think he'd have been fired on the spot.
  22. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 05:01 PM) I think Pena's best comp is Sammy Sosa. A sammy Sosa off the roids, but sammy sosa, nonetheless.Considering the BoSox don't have a true spot for Pena, him being included in a deal makes a lot of sense. I like that comparison too. Good power, never an amazing average, but put him in a 5th or 6th spot in a lineup and he could make some serious noise (who knows maybe he develops a bit more and could turn into more of a middle of the order hitter).
  23. Fathom...from what I've been told about the draft, thats bull (I'm sure some GM's do it, but others prefer to focus on other things). Have they seen video of the pitchers, yes, but they typically talk to there scouts. KW being more hands on in this draft was him setting out a limit to go after "toolsy" players and take chances and try to find some high impact high reward guys (since KW in general is a tools type of GM as opposed to a sabermetric type of GM).
  24. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 03:29 PM) Yep, and then he went and drafted a pitcher he had never seen in person. Big f***ing whoop. Plenty of teams GM's haven't seen there first round picks in person.
