I'll say this, this call-up will shake things up a bit, but I expect we'll see him in left field because he's not a center fielder. The question is does that mean Mack goes to the bench and Terrero plays a ton. Personally I'm starting Mack in CF against all right handed pitchers with Terrero getting the starts in CF against lefties (Mack is hitting very well as of late and we need his bat).

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 11:53 AM) I'd give Rowand a 3 year, 18 million dollar deal. The sad thing is he's going to get a lot more money than that. I'd be surprised, too many good CF'ers on the market this year and not many of the major market teams have a need in center.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 10:34 AM) If San Francisco ever humored themselves with trading Cain it'd probably take Danks and Gonzalez. From my perspective, if we're intent on replacing the weakest link -- while acknowledging his declining trade value-- Contreras will be shipped before next season. Of course, this means Buehrle will have to be signed; as I don't forsee two positions being filled with pitchers within our system. It probably won't matter, anyways. My feeling is Buehrle is gone in less than two months if this team continues to fall backwards. I absolutely think the Sox should do what they can to keep Buehrle and by doing so I think Contreras has to (and absolutely should be) be moved this off-season.

Wouldn't that suggest that he must do something right?

Titans games are on ESPNU baby. If they win today I'm going to San Diego on Sunday, if they lose than I'm going to San Diego on Saturday to catch a game.

QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 09:36 AM) If Broadway projects as MAYBE a #5 with the White Sox, and we aren't even a playoff contender, why would a team hoping to contend for the playoffs think he could be a centerpiece of their rotation? Same with Haeger or Phillips. By the way, we can't trade McCullough until exactly one year from his signing date. I can see us getting Aybar for Dye, but not Aybar and Santana. Most likely, it would be Saunders and Aybar, if that. I think these scenarios are a little optimistic. It would be the biggest coup since the AJ/Giants trade, but I'm not betting on it happening. If you substituted Dukes or Baldelli for Crawford, it's a possibility. I think you are seriously over-hyping the Angels value of Santana. They have lately bantered about moving him from players far less talented than Jermaine Dye. I would bite on the analysis of the Drays, however, Lance Broadway would immediately be better than a few guys in the Rays rotation and he would be projecting behind Kazmir, Santana and Shields giving them a solid 4 (who could be actually better than that) in a couple years (and he'd be a 5 now). And I think the only reason Broadway projects as a #5 with the Sox is because the Sox have one of, if not the best rotation in baseball right now. The Sox rotation has 3 starters under 30, and of the 2 above 30, one has been a consistent 200 inning machine while the other when on still has some of the better stuff in all of baseball. You are telling me a year from now the Rays aren't a much better team with: Earvin Santana and Lance Broadway (plus other prospects, I don't really care who, whether an extra guy from the Angels or one to two players from the Sox as long as it isn't Fields/Sweeney/Gio) than Carl Crawford (considering the abundance of outfielders they already have).

I'm not a fan of much of what San Fran has so to make a deal with San Fran I think you do it simply to stock-pile parts to swing a deal for someone else that actually interests the Sox. And Crede to the Giants makes a lot of sense from there perspective, but I think they'd have to get another team involved (someone that likes guys like Lowery, although I'd have no problem with keeping Cain if the Sox planned on moving a starter, problem is if they moved a starter it would be one of Garland/Buehrle and those are two guys that should pitch in the southside for a number of years.

QUOTE(pale_hose @ May 31, 2007 -> 07:47 PM) Why not Dye and Lance Broadway for Carl Crawford? I see absolutely no reason the Devil Rays would want Dye. To make that sort of a deal you would need to get a 3rd team involved (potentially the Angels) who would give up the prospects/pieces necessary to allow the Sox to get Crawford (however, at that point, you would have to realistically wonder if the Angels wouldn't just get Crawford themselves). But if the Sox could pull a 3 way deal involving Dye/Broadway/Haeger or Phillips or McCulloch (reality is this opens up a spot for some of the AA guys to get to AAA as well) that netted the following teams something like this, than I'd be all in and I think both other teams would at least have to consider it. White Sox Get: Erik Aybar - 2B Carl Crawford - OF Give Up: Jermaine Dye Lance Broadway Charlie Haeger/Heath Phillips/Kyle McCulloch (if necesary an additional mid-level prospect and if one of the teams had interest in Brian Anderson that could be the guy to sweeten the deal) Tampa Bay Gets: Earvin Santana Lance Broadway One of Kyle McCulloch/Heath Phillips/Charlie Haeger Additional prospect from Angels (or Brian Anderson or some other mid-level prospect) Angels Get: Jermaine Dye (If interested they get Brian andreson and swing over another prospect to Tampa Bay). The main question is would the Drays do it. They would significantly upgrade there rotation in Santana (great arm), a guy like Broadway (who is ready to pitch for a team like the Rays and projects as a #3, maybe a #2 if everything goes right), Haeger or McCulloch (Haeger was once ready and maybe a change of scenery fixes that, or they could get another first round pick and hope he can continue to develop) plus at least one more prospect (it could be a pretty solid one at that). Either way they now have arms to go with Shields/Kazmir and they really have enough bats to replace the production of Carl Crawford. I do believe the Angels would easily make an Aybar/Santana for Dye move (in fact they probably would give up more). Sox significantly upgrade athletically with Aybar projecting as a potential #1 or 2 hitter in the future who would start off at the back of the lineup. Crawford would move up to the top of the lineup and we are talking about a duo that would steal 100 bases combined in the future. More importantly, Sox also cut payroll and now have the ability to swing Tadahito Iguchi to a potential contender to get more parts to kind of remake the offense (while still keeping Konerko/Thome together). This would also be no indication of a white flag move, rather a GM realizing his team is old and slow and doesn't fit the personality of his manager and making a mid-season adjustment to compliment what is a very strong pitching staff.

Who would make a play for A-Rod now?

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 09:08 AM) Alex Rodriguez will 95% certainly be on the open market at the end of this year. The only reason that any deal involving ARod would make sense is if we got another piece for ARod and in exchange the Yankees got someone who is a FA for us at the end of this season. I like your throw Cabrera in idea...we do however have at least 1 pitcher who might interest the Yanks, especially as an innings-eater, in #56. I absolutely refuse to trade Mark Buehrle. Buehrle and Garland are the two pitchers on the right side of 30 and they should be kept. I would much rather move Jose Contreras at the end of the season for additional tools (he's old, but should still have trade value as long as he's healthy and pitching well most of the season) and with Contreras gone they could easily afford to give Buehrle money. At that point you have a rotation with Buehrle/Garland/Vazquez making about 40 million a season and the remaining 2 pitchers making substantially less money. You also would probably replace Dye/Crede/Iguchi/Uribe (I would rather lose Dye than Buerhle again) and losing those guys (some via trade, some net draft picks if they walk) would save the club money (roughly 20 million). So between paying a few more million to keep Mark, the Sox would be washing there hands of Jose's contract, and the others listed above (even including Buehrle's net increase that would clear about 27 million off the books if I were to guess). I would hope the Sox would spread that money around to get a couple quality players at the 6 mill a year or so mark (at least one being a middle infielder) and than at least two outfielders and maybe a reliever while they plug in Fields at 3rd base and use prospects acquired from trades of Jermaine Dye, Crede and Uribe (you could hold onto Juan if necessary) to get additional athletes that would fill the other open middle infield spot as well sa the pen/rotation (well in those case those guys would compete for that). The Sox could even make a deal that would net them Melky Cabrera in which case that takes away one of the outfielders you would have to sign (although you would realistically still want two outfielders because there is a decent chance this club will have 3 new starters). I would than keep Mack and use him in that ultra sub role along with Ozuna, move Cintron (unless he really starts raking) and go with Getz as the guy who can play SS/2B. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 09:06 AM) I would have absolutely no problem pulling a Jermaine Dye/Joe Crede for Arod and Melky Cabrrera deal. I don't know if the Yankees would pull that though as I think they would be more interested in starting pitching. If Jose didn't have a no trade clause I'd see if we could get the Yanks re-interested in Contreras. I don't know if I made this clear or not, but I was actually implying including both of them in one mega trade for Arod, although I still don't know if I'd like to see 3 guys making that type of money on the offensive side (simply because I think two is plenty). However, if it were one of those situations where JR would kind of purse string some of that money as being extra money that wouldn't count against a normal payroll (ie a payroll without Arod would be 100 mill, but if the club had Arod JR would be willing to stretch the budget to 110). -

QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ May 31, 2007 -> 09:58 PM) Regardless, there seem to be a lot of posters on the board who think he was performing pretty well. I was trying to point out that, given that, it would be bizarre for people to think a rookie putting up those numbers was bad. But Where Would He Play? Left field with Mack in center. I wasn't a fan of Mack out in center, but I'm also not a fan of having Owens in CF or Anderson back up (Anderson shouldn't be up until he makes serious adjustments to that swing).

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ May 31, 2007 -> 11:35 PM) Crede for Lincecum and Cain. This GM thing is easy. Amazing post. Don't ask me why, but I just started laughing uncontrollably when reading that.

If that were one of our boys I'd freaking commend him and I'm going to commend Arod for doing so.

I'm just of the theory that this team needs a shakeup, the type of move that wakes everyone up and puts the players on notice and I think Ozzie can only do so much in that department, the onus really does fall on Kenny at this point (whether that is Walker going or the team getting rid of one of its regular's and making a roster change). This team needs some youth because while youth is inconsistent, it can also create things that this slow/sluggish team can't do. And I think the reality is Ozzie has to get frustrated because this is the second straight year he's managing an offense that completely doesn't fit his style (and we can argue whether his style is right or wrong, but I've said all along you got to give a manager what he likes.

Torres signed the largest contract the Angels have ever given to a high schooler after getting drafted 10th overall in the 2000 draft and really had a fantastic arm. The Angels were enamored with him and tried to be careful as hell but he randomly lost velocity and really struggled (you could really really compare this guy to Kris Honel as they have similar stories) and he finally under-went tommy john in 2004 (missed the entire season). Prior to 04 he had battled numerous arm injuries as well as in 2003 he missed most of the season after having some ligament damage to his elbow (they opted for rest and eventually the tommy john was needed). In 2001, Torres was the Angels #1 prospect according to BA. From what I remember, when he was actually considered a good prospect he threw in the 91-94 MPH range with very good sink (but that velocity dipped into the upper 80's after his debut with the Angels) although I remember reading where doctors said there was a good chance that after the surgery he would regain his velocity. However, it should be noted in 05 and 06 he has had horrendous control, but last year he had good k numbers and didn't give up that many hits. Could be a sleeper if Perdew has gotten his delivery straightened out (and Cheat is dead on with Perdew...every pitching prospect I have interviewed recently has flat out raved about this guy). By the way, good find on that Cheat. I didn't even realize the Sox had Torres.

Adam Russell, Charlie Haeger, Gavin Floyd...

QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ May 30, 2007 -> 09:53 PM) I wouldn't mind seeing Broadway in the pen right now, he's a two pitch pitcher and I could see him having success. FB, improving 2 Seamer (reports i've read/heard indicate he's made a lot of progress with it as of late), solid Changeup, and a pretty damn good curve. -

QUOTE(fathom @ May 30, 2007 -> 05:42 PM) Should have traded Haeger during the offseason, as teams were actually interested in him. Couldn't agree more. I'll let someone else deal with finishing that project. I'm just not a fan of knuckle ball pitchers because they have a lot of things going against them (especially the slow deliver that turns any baserunner into an instant double). -
QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ May 30, 2007 -> 08:16 PM) I don't see anything wrong with that. I'd be proud if Juan Uribe did it. If Darin Erstad did it, we'd never stop hearing about what a heady ballplayer he is. But since it's A-Rod, a player with infinite talent and the money that goes with that talent, he'll be raked over the coals for being "Bush League." Completely agree. This is just heads up baseball and it is the way I was taught to play the game as a kid and I'm glad to see a guy like Arod do something extra to try and cause some confusion.

QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ May 30, 2007 -> 01:58 PM) Let's see if I can come up with some similar arguments here... This guy has 8 gold gloves, 354 homers in about 90 more games than Andruw, two 40-plus homerun seasons and another 39 homer season, and a .288/.381/.534/.915 OPS. That guy must be great, he must be a future HOF'er, he's one of the All-time greats. Oh wait, it's Jim Edmonds, nobody cares. Jones is a very good player, but he doesn't really belong in the pantheon of the absolute greats. He's going to end up with some very good career numbers largely because he came up when he was 20, but he has not been a consistent game-changing hitter. Yes, he's a likely HOF'er because of his great defense and solid offensive production, but I can't say I'd ever have called him one of the top 5 players in the league, maybe even top 10. My question is who was ever considering him one of the top 5 or 10 players in the league. I know I wasn't. Do I consider him one of the 10 best defensive centerfielders of all time, yes.

QUOTE(BaseballNick @ May 29, 2007 -> 12:45 PM) You'll love Boston. I was there a couple of times and it in no way, is "Wrigley East." It's 100X the park Wrigley is. I recommend taking the tour of the stadium and checking out Yawkey Way before the game starts. Fenway is expensive, but still one of the best places to catch a game, in my opinion. Have fun. My opinion of Fenway is the opposite of yours and more in line with what Steff was saying. In fact, if in the middle of the night someone blew up the dump I'd say all the better cause it is an absolute POS and this is coming from someone that doesn't mind Wrigley and absolutely loved Old Tiger Stadium. I can't comment much on the city as the only part I really saw was when we came in to see the Red Sox game and than rolled out as part of a stadium roadtrip.

QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ May 30, 2007 -> 11:36 AM) Hey, I'm not one of those who are calling for a fire sale or want to blow anything up. I'm still positive about this season and also about this particular ballgame. My point was in answer to those implying that the reason the Twins scored four runs is because Garland is getting squeezed. When the umpire calls a close one against the Twins pitcher nobody notices much. But when he calls one against Garland, Hawk and some here start using it as an excuse. If the Twins hitters would strike out swinging on a bad pitch after getting a close call by the ump, nobody would notice. But because the Twins hitters are more selective, they capitalize on the situation and then Hawk and some here whine about the one close call that didn't go their way. That's the point. Oh I don't disagree, Hawk makes more excuses for the Sox struggles than anyone in the biz. It is always someone elses fault.
