Clemens to Become a FA
The Astro's won't be able to negotiate with him until May.

Red Sox to swap Mirabelli for Loretta
QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 7, 2005 -> 12:19 PM) I don't get this trade at all. Lorreta is a damn good hitter. Ya, this makes zero sense to me. I figured they'd get Boomer, but without him I'm left puzzled.

Braves send Estrada to D-Backs
Good move by the Dbacks. I'm not a big fan of either of those pitchers and when Estrada is healthy he's a pretty good hitting catcher.

Padres trade Sean Burroughs for Dewon Brazelton
Not a bad move by either team. Its basically a swap of talented guys that haven't lived up to there hype. Brazelton has a really live arm and the change of scenery could do him well. I don't quite get this move from the Drays perspective, but I guess they want some 3rd base depth (especially after they move Huff).

I wouldn't normally do this..
QUOTE(Steff @ Dec 7, 2005 -> 11:25 AM) Grampa just called.. Joey IS strong enough for surgery and they are preping him immediately. Should take about 3 hours. This is GREAT news as just 8 hours ago he was NOT strong enough. Thats tremendous news. It looks like things are definately improving and my thoughts are with the entire family Hopefully you'll all be able to celebrate in a few hours and know that the worst is behind.

Would you do this trade?!?!?!?
QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 7, 2005 -> 09:19 AM) I'll take Willis, and realize that not only do you have a lefty with great stuff, but you also have a charismatic superstar who will sell tickets. McCarthy is way too much of an unknown right now. Ya, this is a no brainer move for me and I am a huge Bmac fan. Fish wouldn't do it though.

Juan Pierre a Cub
Cubs got there guy but the Marlins got some good arms.

QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Dec 6, 2005 -> 11:00 PM) I don't think Davis played with Woolridge at all because Davis and Dean Oliver were both freshmen at Iowa in 98. I know that since Oliver also went to the high school I went to like Jeff Horner did. Woolridge's last year was right before that in 97. Thanks for cleraing that up. It all kind of blends in for me. I knew it was either the same year or one year apart.

QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Dec 6, 2005 -> 10:55 PM) haha Jess Settles, he was there for a better part of the 90's. Kinda of like the Van Wilder of Iowa, there about 7 years, no clue about the parties. I've liked Gonzaga for a long time because my favorite NBA was John Stockton. Ya, Settles was really good when he was 1st there and than injured his back. If I recall he had a redshirt season and than something like two medical red shirts. I always remember Kent McCausland lighting it up from beyond the arc (I think at least one of his years he was right around the countries best 3 point shooter), with Bowen, Settles and it must have been Woolridge at the time. Those were some pretty solid Hawk teams. I remember I got to see Tom Davis last game with the Hawkeyes (maybe I've gone crazy though, but I think he lost in the tourney and it was his final game...I'm thinking it was when Uconn knocked us out the year they won it all).

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Dec 6, 2005 -> 08:34 PM) I still think Andre Woolridge was VASTLY underrated, and am consistently surprised not to see him playing in the NBA. I go back to the Gamble/Armstrong/Marble teams.... I recently ran into Wade Lookingbill. THE GREAT WADE LOOKINGBILL! -- The MSU game after Chris Street died was pretty special too. Woolridge was a good player. I can remember him giving it his total all in the tourney one year and the Hawks just fell short. I obviously wasn't well knowledged than but I always wondered what happened to him (I figure he played in Europe or something) because he was a pretty darn good player and just after him Iowa ended up having Ricky Davis (if only we could have kept him more than one year). Hell for all I know Ricky Davis was there the same time as Woolridge (in fact I thought maybe Woolridge's last year was Davis only year at Iowa). Edit: I just got off my butt and looked it up and Woolridge is playing overseas.

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Dec 6, 2005 -> 08:24 PM) Jason how long you been an Iowa fan? How far back do you go with Hawkeye Hoops? Earliest I can remember is the days of Woolridge playing the guard position. I definately remember the Jeff Settles years (bad back got him in) and they had guys like Kent McCausland, Ryan Bowen (NBA guy). I can't quite tell you what year that was, but I'd have to say I've been following them for 10 years. That said, I don't get too many games televised out here (luckily I've been able to see 3 already this year) and I'm not one that really follows recruiting (so best I can do is watch the games and see what they do). Iowa is the sole college basketball team I route for (I'll pull for Arizona in the pac 10 and I've liked the Zags since there 1st tourney run...I happened to see them play twice, it was a tourney Iowa was also in and there fans were totally awesome).

Phils, Cubs talk Abreu-for-Prior swap
QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ Dec 6, 2005 -> 07:40 PM) You see no reason to believe he'll be an injury prone pitcher? 4 or 5 trips to the DL before the age of 25 is plenty of reason. I put some of that blame on Baker, however, some of those trips were totally fluke injuries (getting smacked by a baseball, etc.). That said he puts little stress on his arm and the only reason he's had any of the problems he's had is because Baker is a total dips*** when it comes to managing his staff (I was busy saying this the year the Cubs were a few outs shy of making the world series and I guaranteed that half of there rotation would end up being on the DL most of the season). He still pitched 166 innings this past year and has a 200 inning season under his belt. Simply put, if we think AJ Burnett just signed a fat contract, imagine what Prior would get on the FA market. I'm thinking 13-15 mill a year for 5. But if the Phils get Prior they would be getting him at well under market value while if Abreu were to become a FA today he'd probably make right around what he's getting now (if not a little less). Plus pitching >>> hitting and Prior is not even in his prime (Abreu is right at the end of his prime).

Another ESPN gem
I'm assuming its the same guy that I'm thinking of that I like. Morning radio show on ESPN around 7 (well on the west coast). I listen to it in the car and he's really damn good (despite these comments).
-
Another ESPN gem
Its funny, he's actually my favorite radio guy. He does an excellent job on his show and usually is really good and putting up differing perspectives (my guess is this is taken out of context, or semi jokingly but I wasn't listening to the show at the time).

Phils, Cubs talk Abreu-for-Prior swap
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Dec 6, 2005 -> 06:59 PM) I don't think so. It would be pretty even. The problem with the Cubs is that they can't depend on their other starters so they have to keep whoever they have and hope they don't get hurt. A healthy Prior (and I see no reason to believe he'll be an injury prone pitcher; I could be wrong though) for an older, highly paid Abreu would be absolutely foolish. Prior can be a perennial (and has already proven he can be) Cy Young candidate, plus he makes a whole lot less money. That doesn't even go on to mention that he's quite a bit younger (just getting ready to enter his prime) and well a really good pitcher is a lot tougher to find than a good hitter.

Game set match. Iowa f***ing blows it and they lose because they couldn't f***ing rebound.

Holy f***...so NIU made the 1st freethrow and than missed the 2nd only to get another f***ing offensive board. What the f*** Iowa, get some damn rebounds. Luckily Brunner hit the 3 after 2 more made free throws but they are putting this upon themselves. Hopefully they get lucky and send this to double OT, but I doubt it.

I should just add that is f***ing pathetic by Iowa. They gave up 2 offensive rebounds in the possession and NIU finally hit a 3 to take a 2 point lead (it was the 3rd 3 they attempted of the posession).
