QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ May 21, 2005 -> 08:26 AM) Is anyone else worried about the effect of not having El Duque around is going to have on Contreras? It seemed like he was a really good influence on Count--and I'm a little nervous about that..... If Duque is on the DL, he can still travel with the team if he wanted. Although he may just stay in Chicago.

On a sidenote, as far as I know whatever station reported he was starting on Saturday was a bit premature. He's still slated for Sundays start, although things could change.

QUOTE(longshot7 @ May 20, 2005 -> 10:22 PM) I'd like to vote for McCarthy starting on Sunday and Garland on Monday - mostly because I'm going to the Angels games and I wanna see him pitch. Yeah, I'm selfish like that. Even better. If Bmac starts today than I can see Bmac pitch on Thursday
-
Because its just in your head to get the ball to the pitcher. Its the way the play is made. Hell, I still don't know if Paulie would of got him had he not thrown it. Thats a play where you always throw it to the pitcher.

QUOTE(FGarcia34 @ May 20, 2005 -> 09:11 PM) Very insiteful, anoyone else have an opinion? I'll pass, Zito is no longer the pitcher he was 2 years ago and beyond. Last year he was mediocre and this year he's proving that last year wasn't a fluke year. He's not bad, but he's not going to put the Sox over the top. A bat like Huff or Chavez...now that could possibly do it.

QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ May 20, 2005 -> 08:41 PM) Yeah, we were with Flores, Moat and I think Haig in the press box and they asked Cook what was the hold up. "IT'S RAINING" yelled Cook. Moat leans out the window and yells back "NO s***?" I think the stupid thing you asked if the weather was this bad last year to Flores...and he was in Bristol prior to that. lol. Thats right. Of course there was also the Bryant Nelson interview where i somehow managed to never record it (so we had to go off the stuff we remembered) I think I'm a gifted reporter, the kind the rides the short bus Plus don't you remember BoJingles

QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ May 20, 2005 -> 08:37 PM) Jason and I interviewed Haigwood in CF and Schnurstein along the first base side. Fairly nice field, but nothing topped Thirsty Thursday at Winston-Salem. Man, we were so pimping that rental car...and the Krispy Kreme shop. I just liked the rain delay line when we were up in the Kanny press box and one of the coaches was asking Haigwood, Flores and the others what was going on..."Its Raining". That and you trying to teach me how the hell to pronounce Micah's name correctly so I didn't f*** it up in the interview (of course I said something stupid in that interview..forget what). But on Thirsty Thursday Cerb and I showed off our "Guns"

Happy Bday sleepy and Evan. Hope you had good ones, although I already saw Evan say his wasn't that grand.

I'd say Brandon is a very similar to Prior. Only one difference and you could say its a big difference too (depending on your take on velocity) and thats that Prior can throw consistently 3-4 MPH harder than him. Aside from that the two have pretty much identical stuff, both have very similar and what I'd call flawless deliveries. Plus both have just the ultimate streak of "cool" in them. It deals with just extreme mental toughness.

Prior is the one guy I'd absolutely drool over getting on the SouthSide. Aside from Baker creating some injuries for him the guy is flat out AMAZING. When healthy, as good as it gets in my book.

QUOTE(JimH @ May 20, 2005 -> 07:18 PM) Agree. Next thing you know they'll announce El Duque hurt his arm taking batting practice or something, LOL. On top of that, one thing Ozzie seems to like is having all of his guys ready in case someone goes down. I think he's learned this from his time in the majors (and that short lived time where he came off the bench) as well as from last years club which got hammered with injuries. To go one step farther, maybe he knows Duque is tired and on top of that he also realizes the odds of one of your starters going down for an extended period of time is likely so it would be wise to get Bmac's feet wet and to get him some experience at the ML level while the Sox have a cushion so come August or September (and someone goes down) he'll know he has a guy that could come up with some ML experience under his belt. Part of that scenario is a reason why I think later this year you may see Bmac pitch out of the pen (cause Charlotte won't be competing for the playoffs, so you know damn well they wont' be holding there prospects there for the sake of pleasing Charlotte). Regardless we knew we would see Brandon sometime this year, its just sooner rather than later and he's got the mental toughness to handle this situation.

It would make sense to give Duque the rest, but from what I've always learned, pitchers like getting the ball every 5th day and I don't think the Sox want to mess with that. Plus these guys are horses and injuries are gonna happen regardless of it being a 5 man or a 6 man. The only thing is your gonna have fewer games started by your best pitchers (at this point Garland/Buehrle) and more started by the not so good ones.

Wow, sounds like it got real ugly.

McCarthy idea-Bmac promoted to the big time?

QUOTE(JimH @ May 20, 2005 -> 07:07 PM) Calm down and re-read my post, it makes sense. No reason to rush the announement. Ya, for the reasons of, if Duque isn't that severely hurt than they wouldn't waste an option by announcing his call up too early. Of course if he is going to miss a few starts, than they'd know that be now and you'd think it wouldn't matter if they announced it a little more in advance. -
Now that I think about it, pitching on Sunday for Garland would still have him on the same rest schedule. So its funny they didn't consider that and give Bmac the start on Monday in Anaheim (which would of pissed me off cause I can't go to the game since I'll be taking a final during that time period, lol). Plus you got to think if they moved Garland to Sunday and Bmac on Monday you'd break up the cuban connection once El Duque was back. I guess they aren't going for that and for all we know this injury is more serious than any of us believe. Of course on the other end of things, Duque may just be a little tired and Ozzie and the staff know that Duque has been known to break down so they figure they could have Bmac come up, get his feet wet, and get a few starts at this level while keeping Duque fresh (hell its possible, although I doubt it). Just throwing out some other possibilities.

On a totally random sidenote. Gloadie is supposed to begin his rehab in the next 2-3 days. -
QUOTE(WHarris1 @ May 20, 2005 -> 06:32 PM) Interesting. So we call him up waste an option and start the arb. clock for a rain out? Well they won't officially put him on the roster until its official. But thats also assuming he's only up for one start. HE's gonna be up here, like I said when Duque was signed i was pissed because its just a matter of time until he gets injured. However if Duque helps Contreras become a good pitcher I'll be happy.

QUOTE(BobDylan @ May 20, 2005 -> 06:07 PM) Is it just me, or having won 30 games and massing a 5.5 game lead on the Twins, is this the last thing you wanted to see? For me it is. Even if BMac does come up and do well, the idea of him sucking balls and Duque going down for awhile is not one that is well to ponder. As far as I'm concerned Duque has pitched like crap most of the time with the Sox anyway. This past outing was just a matter of time. Guys are on base all day long in his starts and his command for the most part has been awful.

Hey Welcome aboard Always great having another Sox fan on board!!!!

QUOTE(JimH @ May 20, 2005 -> 05:37 PM) We'll go with that info, now all we need to know is what's up with El Duque. I'd imagine that info will be very hard to come by. It's entirely possible they're just being cautious with El Duque and wanted to throw Brandon in the fire in a competitive situation. Let's see how it plays out. Either way it's great to have depth. Exactly..hopefully Levine is right and it will only be a couple starts max. It definately seems as if the Sox are trying to be as quiet as possible about it. Maybe they figure it will at least keep the Cubs guessing as to who the starter will be. Hell at least you have the team preparing for El Duque a little longer (not that I really think this will be much of a factor either way).

I was told that Contreras will be making his start tomorrow and that Brandon was/is still scheduled to go on Sunday.

Myers always had a hell of an arm, he's just finally reaching his potential. I've long been a fan of his but it figures I finally don't have him on my fantasy team and he starts pitching his ass off.
