The Disappointment Thread
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 01:23 PM) I'd be pissed as a Cubs fan they didn't do more I'd be thrilled as a Cubs fan. Be a realist. They ain't going anywhere yet. They are in a better spot right now then I expected them to be in and doing anything short sighted (with the cash they'll have in the off-season) would have been ridiculous.

Jays still looking at pitching. I presume it would be blasphemy to cut a deal with them for Shark (would be a proverbial waving of the White flag) but, alas, they still have the package to do it. Houston and Dodgers have the ammo as well.

2016 Summer Olympics preparations 'worst' seen
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 11:48 AM) Well until the last couple of weeks. The bubble might be bursting there. They'll just build more ghost towns. Stabilized a bit though. Their whole economy is a relative sham based upon government mechanisms.

Cubs Acquire Dan Haren
If I'm the Cubs, I'm not paying an arm and a leg to move up. They don't have the horses to go deep into the post-season. If I'm the Cubs, I give it the ole college shot and either swing big for a long-term piece or make some small moves that give the impression of us going (an if everything works out, great, we get their) but nothing more. Being over aggressive now, given the position they are in, would be absolutely insane, imo.

Cespedes to the Mets according to Levine
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 11:55 AM) What scares me about that tweet is Nightengale has a very good Sox source, so our FO might actually think that this is an issue when they have Leury Garcia rotting on the bench. Well I hope they aren't really considering Leury because Leury doesn't matter. We aren't not winning the WC because of Leury. It is because of guys we have in our starting lineup. So reality is we are talking about 8 guys + Soto (since he gets enough playing time), maybe you are kind and include Shuck (since he should be playing more anyway). Clearly you can find better ballplayers then Beckham and Leury but they aren't why we are where we are today.

Cespedes to the Mets according to Levine
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 11:54 AM) How did we not catch that earlier? Well then, this deadline is OVA If that is real, Nightengale must be on Quaaludes and gin. Funny thing is...of all insiders, when it comes to the Sox, I trust him the most. I presume this is some BS spin from Kenny / Hahn to drive leverage, I just don't know what GM could look at them with a straight face after hearing that. This isn't Hawk and his "where will he play" logic. Those teams were far deeper then this team. If they believe we have no holes (check that...no major holes) on our roster and no needs, they are delusional or aren't intending on competing and are really going to sell, haha.

Blue Jays Acquire Ben Revere
Damn you people with your facts. Damn you all to hell When it comes to Pierre...I go off my memory of people not liking him with the Sox. Hell with facts...who needs facts. Was it over when the Germans bomed us at Pearl Harbor?

Blue Jays Acquire Ben Revere
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 11:49 AM) Revere has arguably the worst outfield arm in baseball. Problem with my logic is I don't think much of Eaton's arm either. And I don't really like the idea of the Melk man in RF. Eaton would play fine in left, just not sure I'd like him in right but I probably overvalue the importance of an arm. You are right on Revere...it isn't to the levels of Juan Pierre or Johnny Damon though. They had arms like me.

Blue Jays Acquire Ben Revere
QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 11:47 AM) Pierre was underappreciated? He was a hero after the 2003 marlins. Everyone wanted two speedy guys batting 1-2. By the sabs, he was nothing but an awful player.

Blue Jays Acquire Ben Revere
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 11:42 AM) He's basically Juan Pierre if Juan could defend. I know Eaton is showing more power this season but do you really want those 2 guys in the same outfield? Building our team around pitching, I absolutely could live with it. This isn't the steroid era. I'll take productive players and both Eaton and Revere are productive players. I also think they make the pitching staff better and when you think of who Revere is replacing, it isn't that big of a deal. We clearly would want to find a longer term power source at 3B though but yes, I could live with a relative lack of home runs in this era. I want the team to have good players and in my mind, Ben Revere is a good player. I also never had any issues with Juan Pierre, even though he was a slap happy single hitter. I think he was underappreciated for a long time in his career (unfortunately, by the time he got to the Sox, he wasn't very good anymore). I've always felt that stat people underappreciate single hitters with no power. Especially in the case of Pierre where his defense didn't drive strong value. Revere has an OPS > .700 which isn't bad for a slap hitter. In fact, it is better then Avi's and it doesn't even consider the value of defense, etc.

White Sox Need to be careful
One other thing to think about...we are only .5 a game ahead of Texas who added Cole Hamels (and Hamilton is back healthy...no clue what that will actually mean but he's back). Not saying they are contenders, just saying, as currently constructed (and within a crazy run) they are only .5 game back of us and just added Cole Hamels. Their are a hell of a lot of teams around the Sox in the standings who have upgraded pretty significantly.

Cespedes to the Mets according to Levine
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 11:34 AM) It is all prespective. If Garcia were the same age, but went the traditional US route of playing 3 years of college ball, and was at the same point, no one would blink an eye. He'd be in his third year after college. He has a long history because he was signed as a 16 year old, and brought to the US at 17 for rookie ball. In terms of age an experience, he is still pretty young. He still has had a lot of at bats in the minors and majors to show who / what he is. Agree he is young for his experience / talent, etc. If Trout stunk for 5 years but came up when he was 19 or 20, I wouldn't just say, well he's still super young for his age, I'd eventually say, look, the tools aren't going to play (this is just using Trout as an example). Problem with Trout is he could have stunk offensively (production wise...with tools that remained) and I'd have been more then patient with him because of what he could do on the basepaths and in the field at a premium position.

Blue Jays Acquire Ben Revere
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 11:36 AM) Definitely. Revere's speed should help the top of the order too. Its why I think Revere would have been a real nice fit. No idea how they'd play but one of him or Eaton in RF'er would give us tons of range. I presume it would be Revere in RF as I think he has a better arm then Spanky.

Blue Jays Acquire Ben Revere
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 11:31 AM) Good grief, the leagues best offense just added Tulo and Revere over the last few days. Look out Yankees! Revere's upside is more in his defense, but he is a solid offensive player as well.

Blue Jays Acquire Ben Revere

Blue Jays Acquire Ben Revere
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 11:29 AM) I asked what team had no holes. The Blue Jays have a huge hole- pitching. Yep. Rotation is still bad.

Blue Jays Acquire Ben Revere
Wow. If you are Kenny and Hahn, you can't be looking at things in a vacuum. You have to be looking at your forecasted club vs. the Jays forecasted club (as well as Baltimore and the Twins). Revere would have been a nice long-term get. I presume Jays will have given up something good to get him.

Samardzija Trade Packages
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 10:53 AM) One big reason I wouldn't do a Shark for rental bat is you then are losing a decent draft pick. If the net returns gives you the rental bat plus something better than that pick, IMO, it's a no brainer. Completely agree.

Cespedes to the Mets according to Levine
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 10:26 AM) It's a lower risk type of buy, which makes sense given our position in the standings Lets just say we swapped Shark to one team, Sox got Upton, and Padres get prospects. That is a loss to me. I think any chance of Sox making a deep post-season run are gone (don't think that rotation is good enough to win a post-season series) and we don't even get the comp pick long-term to help us. Chances of making playoffs might go up a bit, but thats a big if because we really have no idea what we will get out of EJ (and Rodon is still developing). We could end up with a gas can of a rotation which offsets any positives from Upton and we don't even get a comp pick for the long term. So again, I am not trading Shark for a rental unless it is Shark and prospects for a rental + better prospects.

QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 10:21 AM) I wonder if them trading shark and then using the return to get a bat could try for more then a 2 month rental. If it is me, I think a bat does more to help us get into the post-season then Shark, however, I think Shark is more impactful in helping us do anything in the post-season. I am for moving Shark and adding a long-term bat (if that is what it takes). I'm for moving Shark + top prospects to get someone like Puig.

2016 Summer Olympics preparations 'worst' seen
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 10:21 AM) Many of the buildings, including the Bird's Nest stadium, are now ghost towns. Like I said...the presentation will be awesome. I have no doubt that the actual benefits will not be awesome. That said, China has all kinds of ghost towns anyway...helps keep their economy propped.

Cespedes to the Mets according to Levine
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 10:07 AM) That's not the calculation. The calculation is: Shark > Johnson Cespedes/Upton > Avi Which of those > signs is bigger? Don't forgot the comp pick that we'd get if we just hung on to Shark. If I'm moving Shark in a deal for a bat, Its because the bat we are getting is a long-term solution or in addition to the bat, we are getting some other prospects that we like.
