  1. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 12:29 PM) that would be a no-brainer. I think you'd need to throw in something more promising than Danish. I would absolutely do it.
  2. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 12:27 PM) Alexei Ramirez has an option with a buyout clause after this year. If the Sox hang onto him, but buy out his 2016 option (as opposed to taking it), can the team then offer him arb and get a comp pick if he turns it down? Someone asked on Twitter, I honestly can't find the answer. I believe we make him a qualifying offer, but IIRC, the qualifying offer would be like a $15M (or something along those lines) to be able to actual get the comp pick and thus, by all intents and purposes, we can't get a comp pick (since we would be insane to offer that sort of qualifying offer and even if we were insane enough to do it, no other team would be more insane to then sign him for more. http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2014/11/3/7152...ion-free-agency
  3. In terms of Kemp's contract, Dodgers sent over 32M, so if you evened it out (I understand his contract isn't linear and it does escalate) it would average out to 15M per year for Kemp. Presuming you keep him at the price, you have 4 more years of Kemp @ 15M per season and I don't think you have to give up anything to get him (Pads would clearly have to send enough cash to get it to wash out that way). I might be wrong though and Pads might be better served letting him finish out the season and then evaluating where they see themselves.
  4. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 12:15 PM) No question Kemp has raked before, the question is will he rake with the Sox? We have enough hitters with consistency issues and consistency is one of Kemp's biggest flaws. And I'm just looking at the numbers this year, really. There is no comparison between Garcia and Kemp looking back at past seasons. But offensively, they're not so far apart this year. Kemp had an absolutely awful month that really dragged his numbers down and he's hitting again though. Offensively, they are far apart though. I don't live in a vacuum and with Kemp I have a track record and a recent trend of him mashing (which is in line with his historical norms). I also have the whole park adjusted thing too...cause even if you were equally as good offensively, playing in Petco vs. the Cell is a definite drag on your offensive production.
  5. Shooting a gun at something, with neighbors and everything around seems like a bad idea. Even if he shot straight in the air. So no, I don't think he should have shot it down (cause something worse could have happened), however, I think it should be illegal to fly a drone on my property at that low of a level. Would I care, I probably wouldn't if I wasn't out their, but if my kids were out their, how do I know it isn't some perv or how do I know they aren't scouting my house for a robbery, etc. Should it be legal for people to just be able to walk through my backyard and check it out, no, so why should it be legal to fly something with video camera's right above it. I'm sure in 99% of the situations, it is just people having fun and no harm is ever intended, but the drone can cause damage to the house, etc. Edit: If he took a baseball bat to it, that would be another story and I'd be totally 100% okay with that.
  6. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 11:46 AM) Kemp and CarGo are almost at the opposite end of the ball park spectrum. One hits in a hitter's heaven, the other one hits in a pitcher's heaven. The weird thing is that Kemp's been hitting far better at Petco than on the road. I wouldn't be that opposed to Kemp if CarGo isn't available or is too expensive, but do keep in mind that Kemp's wOBA is like 9 points higher than Avi's and neither are great defenders. Kemp has posted an OPS+ > 100 every year but his rookie year. 5 times he has posted an OPS+ > 120. 3 times he has posted an OPS+ > 135. Let me know when Avi has done any of those things once. Kemp is also looking much more like a guy who is getting comfortable (and he seems to be trending positively from a health perspective). He also has posted a positive WAR every year in his career, with an average WAR of just over 3 in his 10 career seasons. His per game WAR looks even better (given his injuries). It is disrespectful to compare Avi and Matt Kemp's current production. If you are talking Avi, you have to be projecting him and I struggle how well you can project him given how bad he is defensively and I don't know with his patience if he'll be able to hit enough to overcome that. Kemp on the other hand, has proven, that he can absolutely carry a line-up when he's rolling and has done so for full season stretches.
  7. Could the Sox get Rusney Castillo as a buy-low candidate? I don't know that he helps us this year, but he has some talent. No idea why Red Sox would do it, but hell, if I'm going to throw out names, why not throw out some guys who might have some upside.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 11:41 AM) I think Kimbrel is worth more than those, Baez does make sense as a possible return for either of the first 2 IMO. I'm also pretty down on Baez though, so "a rental OF" or "a starting pitcher where the Cubs take on a ton of money" are the way I read those. I presume if Shields goes, it is a salary dump and they don't get much (even though I think he's paid relatively fairly, I don't see Cubs giving up someone like Baez for him. I could see Upton for Baez though.
  9. What about Matt Kemp? Padres are selling and Kemp, after a slow start, has had a torrid July and seems to be getting comfortable. We know he isn't the greatest defensively, but presuming you get the cash that the Dodgers sent, his contract is no longer an albatross and he'd be a major offensive upgrade. Kenny has had interest in the past and Kenny always gets his guy. To be frank, I could more easily swallow a Kemp move then some of the other names (given his contract after the Dodgers ate all that payroll).
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 11:36 AM) I don't know what the Cubs would get back but that makes sense as a place for Baez. They can struggle for a couple years while giving him PAs and he absolutely has the power to hit the ball out of that ballpark. Shields? Upton? Kimbrell? Combination of those?
  11. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 11:28 AM) I always thought Hoffman would be a great return for Samardzija, but I've read a couple of guys who are pretty down on him. There is no way I would give up Montas for CarGo. That move has people complaining about KW for years written all over it. I think the Rockies would take a lesser prospect for CarGo, but maybe not. If I'm the Sox, I don't think I'm trading Montas (I like his upside too much) but if their scouts long-term see him as a reliever and they buy into CarGo and you can free Danks payroll, then I could at the very least see the logic in it. Personally I just think playing with these talented guys with high contracts (who aren't playing up to them) is a slippery slope. Add in the adjustment from the NL (and Coors) and it just seems like the chance of it blowing up in your face is too great. Plus, if it did blow up in your face, that contract does actually do a lot more to cripple you long-term then what we did with LaRoche.
  12. I actually think Schwarber might end up the better hitter. So I don't care who the centerpiece of the deal is (between Bryan / Scwarber) but you need to give up a lot more then that. Castro can be part of the deal but if you include him, it is for payroll relief and has no value to negative value in grand scheme of the trade. A package of just Kyle and Castro doesn't work. It does work for Q though (probably not for the Cubs as I presume they aren't that desperate to get rid of Castro's contract).
  13. QUOTE (Baron @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 11:03 AM) Rockies for sure I think the Rockies take that deal.
  14. QUOTE (wuk @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 11:02 AM) haha...very true. nobody saw this though? man...can't find pic or vid..... By the way, I know you've been a member for a while, but haven't seen you post previously, so welcome aboard!!!!
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 10:26 AM) That is also a good point for the state of our farm system. We have Erik Johnson and Adrien Nieto who both would be rated guys in our system, who aren't in the majors, but don't have eligibility. Nieto would not be a top 100 guy (nowhere close). He has not exactly had a banner year for the Barons.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 10:22 AM) I don't think he'd make it given his "incredibly down year" and "still unexplained velocity issues". I absolutely think he would be on the list. He was a top 100 guy prior to last year (Ranked #63) and yes he had a rough issue, but his velocity is back and he has been absolutely dominant this year. 1 earned run over his last 45 innings while showing very good stuff again (and command). If he was eligible he would most certainly be a top 100 guy.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 10:12 AM) The White Sox were just rated with 3 guys in the top 100 MLB prospects. That said, under no scenario, could our farm system be rated as anything other then middle of the pack to slightly worse then middle of the pack.
  18. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 09:55 AM) Check this 3 team trade out.... Sox-Dodgers-A's. Sox acquire C Stephen Vogt (lefty to pair with Soto). Dodgers acquire Jeff Samardzija Athletics acquire prospects from Dodgers. So for the Sox, it's a swap of Shark for Vogt. So we are going to trade Shark for a guy in his first breakout season at 30? I realize we need catching but I don't know that this gets me that excited.
  19. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 09:49 AM) Who would play SS for the Jays? Alexei.
  20. QUOTE (shysocks @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 09:38 AM) I'd also be willing to bet that his dropoff has been more related to injury than anything else. The media has probably under reported that - the Herm interview was an exclusive for SSS and for some reason nobody else has noticed that key piece of information. Unless there are other articles out there, in which case I'm completely wrong. I also always have had this perception that LaRoche is one of those old school players that will never make an excuse. So I am sure he hasn't reported it to anyone within the media.
  21. QUOTE (shysocks @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 09:33 AM) Very bottom of this Herm Schneider interview recap. http://www.southsidesox.com/2015/7/8/89104...-up-on-injuries You had obviously read the same piece I had. This is why I have said I won't just DFA LaRoche. While I don't know if he'll be able to produce and get through the injury this year, I still think theirs a solid shot that he'll be a productive player for the club next year.
  22. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 09:31 AM) Why his hand? Where did you get that from? I'm going off some comments Herm Schneider made a month ago. Might have been an article on southsidesox, but talked about how Gordon and LaRoche hold the bat and how it makes them susceptible to hand injuries. Reading between the lines, it kind of sounded like Adam was dealing with something at that time. http://www.southsidesox.com/2015/7/8/89104...-up-on-injuries
  23. QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 08:18 AM) I agree with your comments from a baseball purist perspective. Selig was selected by the owners. The steroid era brought fans back to the game and made money for the owners. Was Selig a disaster to his bosses? I don't think so. MLB is a business and it is run for the benefit of the owners. Most of the time everyone's priorities and ethics are lined up. But not always. I'm not certain if it because baseball is my favorite sport of the big 4, but the baseball HoF has managed to be the only one I really care about beyond seeing if my favorite players get in. For the stats heads the old LPGA formula was the cleanest and most difficult to achieve to be in a HoF. It also was an era that was ushered with great peace in terms of strikes (you had 94 and since then I believe this has been the longest stretch with no strikes (and I certainly hope that continues). Selig brought the wild card into the game (and the expansion of the post-season) including the 2nd wild card. When you look back on his legacy, some really great things happened. I also think it was his time to go away and I'm excited at some of the stuff Manfred has done early one. However, I do think they need to do more to "speed" up the game. I also don't want some guys to get put in because statistically they were amazing but were underappreciated because of the common perception of the time. The hall is for the true elites and people that were special and dominant during respective era's. Baseball's hall is the only true shrine of a hall in professional sports.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 09:14 AM) Now that one actually makes a ton of sense. I don't know what I think about it, as I would need to see details, but on the surface it makes a ton of sense for both. Yeah, I struggled to think what would make sense. Would the Jays have given up all that for Shark, I doubt it. Clearly Alexei would go in any deal (and yes he'd be a downgrade over either of their SS's). Would Q for Tulo make sense? Talent wise, absolutely, but factoring in contract, I wouldn't do it. That said, Tulo's deal isn't horrific, in fact, it would be good if he could stay on the field (but he can't). So would Tulo for Shark, Alexei, and prospects work...I still don't know cause the Jays clearly wouldn't need prospects, they are looking to contend. At the same time, this would be a deal between 2 teams directly competing for each other (again, which makes no sense). Like I said, crazy thoughts, but hey, who knows.
  25. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 07:49 AM) I'm both simultaneously shocked that Brady is getting hit with 4 games for a pretty minor offense, and at the same time shocked that people don't seem to think there is enough evidence to suspend him for it. In cases where their is hard evidence against players, suspensions get reduced (e.g., police records, etc). In this case, well at this point, I think the whole thing is insane. League vs. power owner, star player, etc. Just makes no sense and Kraft has put them on blast and it seems like the NFL is spinning everything they can at this point to be anti-brady (but I don't understand any motive they'd have to do so). That said, in this case, it is all circumstantial. They say the phone was destroyed...Brady refers to it as broke (big difference). Also, apparently, Brady asked Wells if they were going to need anything (this is from Brady's side so who knows if it was true) and they said no. This isn't like he destroyed it before the investigation, I believe it was destroyed before the appeals process (but again, I might be wrong, have heard way too many different stories over the radio).
