Sox Looking at Upton
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 03:11 PM) I really hope the Sox are not after Upton. He's a FA to be and K's too fricken much. Ross makes alot of sense though. GB pitcher that can strike batters out. Walks alot of batters but I can live with that. Ross would give the Sox an immediate replacement for Samardzija's rotation spot in 2016. From a Sox perspective, Will Myers would make more sense than Upton. If the Sox trade with SD I hope it's for Myers/Ross. He's in general a better player then Cespedes (and a better defensive outfielder), however, Cespedes is having the better year. I just don't see us trading within the division.

Sox Looking at Upton
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 03:04 PM) I can't tell you how many threads have been started, cleaned up, combined, and deleted in the last few days because of no catch alls. I am guessing you aren't seeing half of them then. That is what we are supposed to do though. Just like titles of threads get updated to reflect changes in news status (e.g., trade from rumor to fact).

Cespedes to the Mets according to Levine
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 03:03 PM) If Montas is the centerpiece I'd be all about that I would not trade Montas to a division rival. I also would not trade Montas for 2 months of Cespedes or Upton. PS: Look at Upton's numbers, he's pretty streaky and I personally think he is over-valued because of his tools (vs. his production).

Cespedes to the Mets according to Levine
If the White Sox are confused, I'd hope it is because they got some absurd offer for Shark and/or other guys and its making them think twice (given the sheer upside of something else). I think the idea of giving up talent for a rental is just awful (unless we literally are getting one of these rentals for nothing). As long as we are buying for the long haul, I don't really care. Then as long as you still buy into contending next year and the following year, you are in good shape!

Cespedes to the Mets according to Levine
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 02:56 PM) No one's going to have to empty the farm, or trade a top 100, for 2 months of these hitters. I hope we get neither - don't give up young players for a slim chance at a wild card. I'd rather trade Shark and roll with Johnson and we'd probably not take much of a step back. But of the 2, would far prefer Upton. Don't need any of these "I won't play RF" guys on team. Cespedes has a career OBP of .316. And don't want to send a player to Tigers. I bet you that Justin Upton goes for a top 100 prospect. I tend to think Cespedes does as well. And if not a top 100, then two guys who are close to top 100 status.

Sox Looking at Upton
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 02:53 PM) I'm referring to Eaton, Melky, Gomez, and Garcia. See, that is where I have no issue. Avi is not a major league starting outfielder (not on a contending club with other lineup issues). I understand he is young and has some tools but I think he is a bad baseball player and given our pitching stuff, am okay cutting ties with him and finding a capable outfielder. I really don't think a lot of people realize just how terrible Avi Garcia is. They all underestimate the awfulness of him because of his age and "tools".

Sox Looking at Upton
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 02:48 PM) Then what would we do in 2016 with 4 outfielders, not including Shuck/Trayce? What 4 outfielders are you referring to? Trayce and Shuck aren't starters and Avi isn't a starter either (and I presume would be part of a trade).

Sox Looking at Upton
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 02:36 PM) Must admit, Soxtalk's obsession with not allowing catch-alls is sorta.....bizarre. You can blame me (although I'm not the only person anti-catch all), but as the owner, I have certain preferences and I hate solid rumors burred in threads. It is a pain in the ass for me to read (when I don't want to necessarily read through pages of discussion if I'm trying to get caught up on news / rumors) and it is also bad for forum discussion (and as an admin, I try to do what helps generate discussion).

Sox Looking at Upton
I really don't like the idea of going for a rental. We are still on the outside looking in and are working towards a longer term plan. This winning is nice, but I'd rather give up an extra prospect for Carlos Gomez or someone else who will be around vs. giving up prospects who won't even be around next year to help us (especially positional prospects).
-
Would you ever consider?
Based purely on us getting him as a true buy-low, then yes. However, it doesn't appear that the Cubs are going to sell him as a buy-low. I.e. give him up plus take on a bad contract (or send cash) for another team to take Castro off their hands.

3B need
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 02:35 PM) Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal 4m4 minutes ago #WhiteSox hitters last in the majors in fWAR, so almost any upgrade would make sense. Main need: 3B, a position of scarcity in industry. Todd Frazier is out of the line up tonight Frazier would be a pretty big get and go with a longer-term plan. I just think the price would be so steep that it wouldn't make sense. Plus, you have to admit Saladino has provided a nice spark, but Frazier is a clear upgrade and Tyler will probably have an adjustment phase now that teams are getting more footage on him.

Sox Looking at Upton
Given closure in the catch-all, this now allows for discussion on Upton within here (similarly, we have a thread on Cespedes, who has been rumored).

Official Buyers Thread
This has turned into a catch-all, which I am opposed too. Lets get the specific threads on the various rumors started.

Crazy Trade Deadline Predictions
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 11:21 AM) Sox acquire: Yasiel Puig Austin Barnes Blayne Weller Diamondbacks acquire: Tyler Flowers Chris Hatcher Dodgers acquire: Cody Regis Frank Montas Micah Johnson Tyler Danish Erik Johnson Why does a team gunning for the world series trade from its major league roster (Puig and technically Barnes) without getting a major league piece back? Only way the Sox get Puig (without including Sale / Q) is as a 3rd team in a deal where the Dodgers get the front line pitcher that they want (and at this point, I have no idea who that is).

Predict the Sox deadline.
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 10:42 AM) You mean him doing the Jed and taking the gm job with Oakland. I don't understand the heat here and I actually think this is a pretty fair trade for both side and I probably would be fully okay with that trade. Might be because I don't think highly of Avi and I highly doubt Hawkins puts it together.

Quietest rumor mill you can remember?
It has been quieter ever since Ozzie went away. The Guillen family had extremely loose lips. The perception is Robin doesn't and I think Hahn and Kenny work hard to keep things tight. I also think we probably just got into the buyer's market so probably aren't as far along as other teams.

David Price to Toronto
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 09:49 AM) Now if the Sox get a bat it definitely cannot be a rental. Just no sense in trading our prospects for anything but a good 2 way player. The one thing that would under all circumstances piss me off is if we gave up legit talent for a rental. I have no desire for that this year. If we give up talent, it needs to be someone we have around for at least another year (preferably longer).
-
David Price to Toronto
Pretty crazy. Toronto adds Price and Tulo. They obviously paid a steep price, but if you think in terms of pure talent, those are two significant talents.

More evidence of Chicago media turning on Ventura
QUOTE (harkness @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 09:31 AM) Explain this.... because Stone and Hawk were saying how tough the Sox would be in a 1 game wild card because the opposition would have to face sale. What if Sale started in the 162nd game or even the 161st game, bottom line, Sale wouldn't be able to pitch because he wouldn't have any rest. It isn't like their are 4 or 5 days in between the 162nd game and the wild card play in games.

Official Buyers Thread
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 09:24 AM) Yep . When Greg Maddux was pitching and umps would call strike after strike because he was always around the plate how many times do you think his catcher was credited was being able to handle those near miss pitches and turn them into strikes. If I wanted to spend the time I'd look at the teams with the most walks and see how many of their catchers have a good pitch framing rating and do the same with the teams with the least walks just to prove my point. But I will let those who keep using it as a viable tool do that to try and disprove me. Maddu'x personal catcher had a really long career. Eddie Perez had a nice career thanks to Maddux.

David Price to Toronto
Is it done?

Non White Sox Rumors
We don't need starting pitching. If we are going to use chips, use it on a position player (who will be able to help us next year as well). I am fine with our rotation and if we want to replace Danks, lets do it from within.

Official Buyers Thread
QUOTE (Mike F. @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 08:41 AM) I'd drop Flowers honestly. Soto can hit at the very least and his defense is ok. Flowers isn't particularly good at anything besides being Sale's personal catcher. Except being one of the best pitch framers in the league. We'll all agree he sucks offensively but his pitch framing (along with the fact that their are basically no good catchers in baseball) are what make him passable.

Indians trade Moss to STL
QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 08:39 AM) Jesus that's a lot. Bats have been expensive in this market. Murphy was had for a far more reasonable cost. That was the type of move that would have been pretty nice for the Sox.

Official Buyers Thread
QUOTE (Mike F. @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 08:37 AM) So is Pierzynski coming back a realistic move? If so, I'd LOVE IT! He is on the market and we have a history of him. Technically he's a great platoon fit with one of our other catchers. He also brings a nice presence with him. I'd say it probably is, but I can't see the Sox just dropping one of Flowers / Soto and I also don't see us carrying 3 catchers (unless they plan on DH'ing Soto a bit in a platoon with LaRoche)?
