2011 Minor League Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 8, 2011 -> 12:55 PM) The Trout pick doesn't really bother me that much. A lot of teams missed on Trout not just the Sox. Trout was real raw and everything just clicked for him after being drafted. Mitchell was on the way to being a real good baseball player before getting hurt. I was really high on Trout in that draft and IIRC he was my guy who I wanted the Sox to draft. That said, I had zero problem with the Mitchell pick. And no one knew Trout would turn into arguably the best prospect in baseball.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 8, 2011 -> 12:12 PM) Several teams with worse records are playing better baseball now. Oakland, KC, Minny, Marlins, Pads. Don't the sox have one of the best records in all of baseball since May 10th or so?

2011 NFL Lockout Thread
Carolina is evidently looking for a 3rd or 4th rounder for Steve Smith. If we were trading a pick, I'd much rather go after Smith. I will point out I personally don't want us to make any trades because I want the club to keep its picks. I would like the team to take a serious look at Santonio Holmes and a guard.

Relationship Advice Thread
QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 7, 2011 -> 07:47 PM) I'm in a relationship. I've been in it since I was much younger. I love being in the relationship most times, but sometimes it's really tough to stay in love. There seems to be a lack of communication and respect. Every year it seems to costs me more and more money to go out and spend time in this relationship. Lately, everytime I get invested, it seems I am disappointed and feel like my heart has been ripped out. What to do? How long. Provide a little more details as to how it costs more and how you get invested? Has it been off and on?

Swap Dunn for Soriano?
I think it is interesting. You could use Soriano out in LF if you wanted or use him at 2B (assuming he could still play there). It isn't like 2B is that premium of a position anyway. Soriano gives you a little more speed as well. He would make you more right handed though and makes more money. I think I'd consider it more so if the Sox were able to expand the deal into being a our problem for your problem scenario with Fukodome, Zambrano, and Soriano coming over for Dunn and Rios. Sox would take on payroll up-front but would save money down the road. Would only make sense for the Cubs if they really wanted to unload the short-term money and liked Dunn and Rios chances. I have no idea if the Cubs would consider it and it is clearly pure fantasy given how much money would be involved.

Pierre - .341 OBP since April 30th
QUOTE (gatnom @ Jul 7, 2011 -> 09:52 AM) Because his job is to win games, not to stick with the worst player in baseball until he's just mediocre enough to not have negative value. Pierre isn't the worst player in baseball. He isn't even the worst player on the Sox. By that logic, David Ortiz would have been cut by the Red Sox a long time ago (he had 2 straight years of having terrible starts, IIRC).

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 7, 2011 -> 08:59 AM) Beckham >>> Morel. Defense relative to their position is similar (if not favoring Beckham). And hitting, it isn't close. I figured that would be someone's argument. I like 3B defense over 2B defense but I won't argue this much. I think Beckham and Morel have both been better than Dunn and Rios for sure. Pretty sad. Two of our three highest paid offensive players are ranked as our two worst offensive players.

fire walker
I'd have to think, barring a series win, that there will be some pretty serious organizational meetings going on during the All Star Break. No better time to make changes than during the break. And while I have never thought that Walker is terrible, I have always thought that a message has to be sent and clearly he's the easiest guy to let go.

2011 White Sox Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (spiderman @ Jul 7, 2011 -> 08:45 AM) I don't think it makes much sense to have, at times, your 3 worst hitters (Pierre, Morel and Dunn) at the top of the lineup, and I certainly don't like Pierre and Morel at the top of the order. Pierre is likely to continue batting on top of the order because Guillen likes the idea of a leadoff hitter, but Morel, who does play good defense, is becoming a bit of a luxery item at 3B given his .250 average and 1 HR. If I'm Guillen, I'm probably going to give Mark Teahan more time at 3B because this offense can't afford to have as many struggling hitters as it currently does. I think that Beckham & Rios are both worse than Morel and Pierre. Pierre is like our 5th best hitter right now. Morel might be the 6th best, followed by Beckham, Rios, and Dunn. I might have Morel ranked above others, but I'm basing his numbers more on what he's done the past month and a half or so. Which still isn't anything to write home about but has been good signs of development.

2011 White Sox Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Jul 6, 2011 -> 07:31 PM) I feel kinda bad for Pierre to be totally honest. I feel more confident with him at the plate than I do half our lineup (Morel, Dunn, Beckham, Rios). I agree our team would be better if he was replaced with Viciedo, but he's hardly been the only problem. So, yes...replacing Pierre with Viciedo will help. But it's not going to make Beckham hit like he can/should, it's not going to make Rios live up to his potential, it's not going to get Dunn back to his old self, and it's not going to make Morel live up to his marginal upside. I have been saying this for a long time. Pierre has become the undeserving whipping boy. He's been more productive than at least a few guys on our roster, yet somehow, he gets most of the hate. I realize he isn't great and in an ideal scenario you don't have him in the lineup. But the Sox are playing .500 ball more because guys like Dunn, Rios and Beckham have been terrible and less because of Pierre's play. I will also that while I like Morel, the struggles of Dunn, Rios & Beckham, have magnified the problem that is Morel. Ideally, Morel was gonna be a guy that would never have to be counted on this year. Just play good defense and learn to play. He's basically done that and has been improving. He still has major holes in his game but I think he'll have the ability to be a league average 3rd baseman (factoring in his defense). The problem is, when you already have 3 black-holes in the lineup (Dunn/Rios/Becks), than Morel ends up being a 4th black-hole. That is almost 50% of your lineup.

Relationship Advice Thread
Joe, I also echo the sentiments of the posters above. She has "trouble" written all over her. If you are looking for a relationship (and judging by your posts, you were) than you never want to start you relationship with someone when they are already in a relationship. She has been cheating on her boyfriend for a while with you (maybe not physically cheating, but emotionally).

Is there a scenario ...?
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 6, 2011 -> 03:17 PM) Let's see: Strasburg, Harper, both Zimmermans, Rendon and a bunch of other young legit talent or the Sox? Hmmmm. Not sure which way I'd lean? I'd take the job of the team that has historically given its managers a lot of rope (e.g., Sox) and also has more history. But thats just me. Jerry is a very good owner to work under.

White Sox: Big Board 2013
It really is hard to gauge the outfield. Trayce Thompson is the type of guy that if the switch flips, he'll sky-rocket up the system and could be penciled into the outfield in 2013. Same could even potentially be said about Mitchell (if now that he's gotten half a season back under his belt, he can start to make strides and show he is 100% back from the injury). The hard part is, I could also say that neither of the guys have shown me near enough. So it really is hard to say. I would say Erik Johnson is probably safe to not make the squad starting in 2013, but crazier things have happened (since Daniel Hudson). And I really think Johnson projects similarly to Huddy. Both have good quality arms but had trouble repeating there deliveries. However, no one can ever predict a prospect to make the type of "rise" that Huddy eventually did. Our rotation, based upon our internal development, looks awful. But I also know we could potentially be adding other guys to the rotation or keeping guys (whether that is spinning Jackson, resigning Jackson or spinning Danks, Buehrle, etc). Not that it would help in 2013, but you could also probably safely assume that arbitration would be offered to those guys and 2 comp picks would be received for each of those guys (if the Sox held onto them as opposed to trading).

I'm all for the signing though. Be interesting to see how Cullen would do in the 4-3 set-up. I assume the Bears plans would be to utilize him as a DT. Basically as Tommie's replacement.
