  1. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Dec 5, 2008 -> 05:44 PM) Paul White of USA Today was on XM radio and he mentioned that the Sox and Brewers are in some heavy talks about Jenks... With our IF set who would the Sox be asking for from the Brewers This would make a lot of sense. I'd have an interest in numerous members of the Brewers, including Prince Fielder (of course you'd have to move Paulie but it is a deal that I'd make).
  2. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 5, 2008 -> 11:06 AM) I'm happy that KW offered OC arbitration, but it shows the disconnect between OC and the organization that they seem stunned he would even think about accepting it. Did you see Ozzie's comments, they weren't all that negative towards OC. I don't think Ozzie disliked OC as much as everyone said. I do think that he rubbed Kenny the wrong way and obviously some of the teammates.

I hope I get it in HD and all that badass stuff.
  4. Very happy with what Ozzie said.
  5. QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 09:11 PM) Not sure if you are Bulls***ting here or not, but I too have wondered if all of these cost cutting deals are more about the economy and anticipation of a drop in revenues. The only thing that doesn't make sense, however is raising ticket prices. In my mind, the price point to maximize revenue next year is probably below 2008 levels, not above them. See if you can get them in the seats, then push concessions. Time will tell. I'm sure the Sox are going to take a bit of a hit. You got to factor in that there was at least some cash helping them get there payroll to what it was last year, so when you take that out the question is how much in payroll has the club really dropped (plus how many guys have received raises). Yes they've cut a significant chunk already but I'd say they were probably a bit over-budget at one point last season too.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 06:30 PM) "As we sit now, we're bumping up against our break even point as far as payroll " KW 12/4/2008. One thing I had forgotten is that the Sox payroll was 120+ so yes they have cut a ton but they also don't have as much cash on there books this year so I'd say that they might have a bit of room but they are still at 96M as we speak. I believe we'll see the teams payroll in the 96-104M range (in terms of what they actually pay, so any cash the Sox are getting from another club would mean they could spend more than such), which means that the Sox would still likely have some moves to make if they want to get super agressive.
  7. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 06:08 PM) The one thing I took out of the Stone interview was it seems like JD is a goner. Considering all the praise they have given JD over the years, dangling him out to every team basically in such a public fashion seems curious. I wonder if his problems with OC cost him some points with the White Sox hierarchy. JD wasn't the only one to have issues with OC though and it was evident that the Sox brass clearly had problems with him. I'd be shocked as hell if the Sox wanted to get rid of Dye. I think its a matter that he's the best chip out there that should be able to command a lot while only having a few good years left. The guy is clearly a class act and will always be someone I cheer for (regardless of the uniform he wears).
  8. Many scouts liked him more as a hitting prospect out of college than a pitching prospect. Clearly he's a bit of a project but he has a ton of raw offensive ability and could very well develop into a viable offensive prospect in two years time (albeit he'd be old). Still, its a low risk move and one I like a lot.
  9. It should also be pointed that him accepting arbitration could be prudent. He has a good season and the economy improves and all of a sudden he gets a 3 year deal worth substantially more money than he would have gotten today (plus he made more annually this year).
  10. I don't get it. Sure he has size, but it isn't as if he looks horribly fat. Of course for being 19 he's huge but just make sure he's on the proper conditioning program and that size could be an asset.
  11. Interesting.....this is going to be a good match of chicken and regardless I don't care. OC will show up and play and do an above average job of it. Ramirez can slide to CF and you got Getz/Lillbridge/etc battling it out at 2B.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 04:16 PM) Gilmore follows Ryan Sweeney to make him our second recent Iowan, both second round draft picks. So I guess we'll see Santos starting and Gilmore playing in the SAL together. Should be fun to follow their progress and have a reason to be curious about the minor league boxes again with real interest. KW said Rodriguez's fastball was in the 95-96 MPH range recently, Baseball America had him topping out around 93. Big difference, if it's actually legit. And with his frame, he is projectable to get bigger and stronger and maybe add some more MPH, although he already is age 21. Also curious that KW mentioned beefing up Dominican training camps/scouting but nothing about Venezuela at all. Gilmore was a supplemental 1st round pick.
  13. QUOTE (R.J. @ Dec 3, 2008 -> 11:43 AM) Ok that's about what I thought. So if the Orioles at #5 sign Cabrera, do we get two picks tacked on at the end of the first round? Two sandwich picks? I think the Dodgers at #17 need a shortstop... come on guys, pick up the phone, bring OC to the OC. If the Dodgers lose out on Furcal, they will sign OC. You can book that.
  14. I should read the thread. He was traded. I thought this was a new thread and I was kind of curious since we now have Lillbridge, Nix, and Betemeit.
  15. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 02:02 PM) How much do you guys think is to much to give up. Say one of the trio of Towers, Depodesta, and Alderson called the Sox up, and said you could get Greene and Morton for Anderson, Broadway, Allen and Shelby would you do it? That would be highway robbery. and one of the worse trades in franchise history (potentially). Allen and Shelby are both top 10 prospects (Shelby with a ton of upside) and it would be assinine to move those guys and not get a potential impact player in return (I'm not saying those two alone get you an impact player but I'm not moving them for a guy coming off his worse season in his career and a potential back-up catcher).
  16. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 11:02 AM) He had OPS's away from PETCO above .800 in both 06 and 07, but he was just absolutely terrible in 2008. Still he could be a decent buy low candidate depending on the price. I'd probably rather give us less for him than say to acquire a J.J Hardy for instance. I'd deal him for Broadway or McCulloch or even Betemeit, but nothing else. He's a nice piece and a guy that has had one bad season (last year) but I wouldn't pencil him in for anything necessarily. I also wouldn't be shocked to see him go elsewhere and have a couple above average offensive years (as a solid 6 hitter or so).
  17. I can't say I like what Kenny is saying, with the exception of the Flowers/Lillibridge part. Otherwise nothing said that gets me excited, going to just have to hope its a smokescreen due to what happened last year at the winter meetings where he got bit in the butt.
  18. QUOTE (scenario @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 10:26 AM) Later in his conversation with Holmes/Hampton, he said he thought the likelihood of a Dye-Jenks deal with the Mets was not high. In fact, he questioned where the rumor even came from. Then he introduced a rumor of his own... said he wouldn't be surprised to see the Sox talking to St. Louis... offering minor league pitching prospects for Colby Rasmus. I don't think the Sox have the minor league pitching prospects out there to obtain Rasmus. Plus teams rarely do prospect for prospect deals, although the Sox have done some in the past (Carter for Quentin.....McCarthy for Danks). Still, the Cards love Rasmus so the only way he's coming here is in a deal involving one of our better players or two.
  19. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 3, 2008 -> 09:53 AM) Rivera is a FA now, is he not? Yep. I wouldn't have a problem with the Sox picking up Rivera now. He could start in CF or slide over to one of the corner outfield spots or just be one hell of a 4th outfielder depending on what goes down with Dye and whether Ramirez gets moved to the OF.
  20. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 3, 2008 -> 09:45 AM) Because of his 2006 season. Click on link. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=4956 When he's been healthy, Rivera has been a VERY productive player. And let's face it, KW signs players like this before he goes out to spend money on a Dunn, Ibanez, Burrell or Abreu. That's just not Kenny Williams. Signing Rivera is, because he would sign for only two years and he would be a very affordable option. Who would our internal candidates be for LF, if we traded Dye? Fields or Viciedo? We don't have anyone but Owens and Wise that could play at the big league level. I don't care where Borbon is ranked...that doesn't matter to me. If it did, Iowa football would never win a single game based on their recruiting, except for possibly Northwestern on occasion. Quentin wasn't even going to make the team, and Alexei Ramirez was a combination of Ramon Santiago/Mario Mendoza and Miguel Cairo. Poreda is only REALLY valuable if he's going to be a starter. Adam Russell was also one of our top prospects and he's worth basically nothing now. Of course, Poreda is left-handed and throws a tick slower than Thornton, but there's a very mixed sentiment about his abilities as a starter. As I said, don't make the trade if you feel he can develop a 3rd pitch that's at least something that can be used 10-15% of the time to keep hitters off your fastball. Rivera can also play all 3 outfield positions well and has a cannon for an arm. I've seen a lot of Rivera over the years and I know damn well that if he's healthy, he's a productive outfielder and would be a very nice value pickup. The Angels are planning on bringing him back though, but I think he'd welcome the opportunity from another team since the Angels have so many outfielders.
  21. Damn, Iowa almost picked up the win.
  22. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Dec 3, 2008 -> 09:37 AM) If I'm giving up Jenks and Poreda, I want Carlos Beltran not this Borbon prospect (who I've never even heard of until now). Agreed. Poreda for Borbon would be a deal the Rangers would consider making. Why in god sakes would you also include Jenks. Thanks but no thanks.
  23. Casey Blake is an above average 3rd baseman who would be a pretty good addition. He's not a star, but he's a pretty damn good 6 hitter who provides a nice veteran prescence.
  24. Konerko clearly showed at the end of last season that his lack of production was due to injury. The only way I would deal him is if you are getting good value for him and if we did deal him, I'd immediately sign Adam Dunn.
  25. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 3, 2008 -> 08:29 AM) Up until a few hours ago, I thought the Sox were looking hard at Furcal and Hudson. However, after reviewing these recent moves, we have so much "depth" with regards to middle infielders that it wouldn't make sense to sign one of these guys. Unless a team like the Orioles wants one of these guys in a trade for Roberts (obvioulsy in addition to other guys). Or if they will swing one of the 2B prospects and Broadway for Taveras, which than re-opens the odds of going after Furcal or Hudson.
