9/18 Sox vs. Bombers - 6:05 pm, WGN
QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Sep 18, 2008 -> 06:09 PM) along with MacDougall,Boone and Wasserman If the Sox go anywhere in the post-season, it will be with the help of MacDougall. Linebrink isn't healthy and Dotel is exhausted. The only solid arms in the pen are Jenks/Thornton and after that MacDougall is the best option.

QUOTE (BlackBetsy @ Sep 18, 2008 -> 05:07 PM) What I would like to see tomorrow morning: "Chicago White Sox - Placed LHP Horacio Ramirez on waivers for purpose of granting his release." Maybe we could even doop the Twins into picking him up. Ramirez is absolute garbage.

The Economy, stupid
QUOTE (Cknolls @ Sep 18, 2008 -> 12:12 PM) After Enron (now that clearly was a matter of greed, corruption, and criminality) the accounting rules were changed to require companies to rate their assets each quarter as if they were selling their companies. Say an investment bank owned a security that consisted of a package of $100,000 mortgages. Let's assume that there were a thousand of these. If all were paying, the security would be worth $100,000,000. If 20 percent of the mortgages went bad, under the old accounting rules, the security would be worth $80,000,000. But if, at the end of a quarter when a panic has gripped Wall Street about mortgage backed securities, the investment bank, because it can't find an immediate buyer for the security, is forced to rate that $80,000,000 instrument at zero. Bam. A downward spiral spins even faster and banks and insurance companies start collapsing. Will all due respect to John McCain this disaster is not the result of greed or poor oversight. It's in large measure the result of an overreaction to Enron. The contrary argument is that if a company has no intent to dump said security in the down-ridden market why should they mark down? Of course if thats the case than you have inflated balance sheets and are more likely to be able to get additional financing. So that argument is a double-edged sword. The reality is FAS 157 is very good but people need to realize there is a major potential for fluctuation related to the valuation done.

The Economy, stupid
QUOTE (Cknolls @ Sep 18, 2008 -> 11:25 AM) Well Fasb157 was a good response to the Enron crisis. Let's mark to market. Hey, what's the market? Don't know. S&P: You're downgraded two notches, you need to raise 50 billion in capital. There is such a gray area surrounding FAS 157 valuations. Everyone keeps writing down these investments but as long as there is some logical evidence behind the value you tend to go with it and you typically use the major players as the trend setters (and there valuation flows through to everyone else). There is just so much "gray" area there.

Appalachian League Top 20 Prospects
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 18, 2008 -> 04:12 AM) $300,000, but I don't believe he was in the Appy League. Plus, when he first had signed he probably would have had some consideration. Of course he wasn't even hitting 86 MPH which makes it pretty tough to make any sort of prospect list as a pitcher.

Gavin Floyd you are da man
QUOTE (Felix @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 06:32 PM) By "a portion" do you mean May and September? Other than those two months, he's been pretty solid. Yep and he was absolutely terrible those months. He was Swisher-esque and I b****ed and moaned big time for 2 months. Swisher has had like one hot streak the entire season, otherwise he has been one of the worse everyday players in the American League.

Are you bald or balding at a younger age than average?
QUOTE (shipps @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 12:54 PM) I didnt realize that balding effects alot of the guys in their 20's until I actually hit my 20's.I always thought it was something that happens when you turn into an old man.But a large % of the guys I know that are my age are either completely bald already or are in the process of it. I have my hair thankfully but Iam worried that I will lose my hair at a young age considering its genetic and most times skips generations. My father has all his hair at 48 but both my grandfathers lost their hair at a young age. How do you look at your best when your bald?Do you shave all your hair off?Which could be a good look for some people.Or do you just go with it?And Iam going to assume that no one on here will admit to wearing a rug on their head. Geeze, I wonder who one of those friends is.....what an ass u are, LOL.

I figured they were pitching around him. Oh well, I have no problem. Richard pitched a good game and the pen is horrible. After that double, its time to go to the pen though. It better be one of the big guys or MacD.

Leadoff double and a struggling Alexei up and than Uribe (who has been hot, but is still not someone I can rely on). However, Juan is really good at getting someone in from 3rd with less than 2 outs in his career. Alexei is a great bunter. A 2 run lead is a s***load more than a 1 run lead. Bottom line, in that circumstance the bunt made a hell of a lot of sense (it wasn't like you were asking a guy who can't bunt to bunt). Plus the Sox inability to bunt falls flatly on the coaching staff/players for not getting the practice in.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Sep 15, 2008 -> 07:54 PM) Those late rounds are to fill rosters in the lower levels, with really zero expectations they will ever see the 40 man roster. Every team does this. But you are right, it is safer to try your best with every draft pick. But while you are taking chances, why not take a chance, you Piazza is always mentioned. He was drafted based on his sperm donor. To add to that, Piazza was related in someway to Tommy Lasorda (that or Piazza was Lasorda's god-son but it was something like that). I've seen guys get drafted with no ability what-so-ever (That didn't start on bad high school teams). The reality is a scout was familiar and knew the guy would play an organizational type role (every team needs those sort of guys).

QUOTE (shipps @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 01:20 PM) Good because I expect a bed wetting at Yankee Stadium. Richard usually causes his own bet wettings. He's had a couple horrid outings, but usually you can pinpoint a spot where all goes wrong and it typically involves him making some sort of dumbass fielding mistake. That or he'll all of a sudden s*** his pants with two outs. It's kind of odd cause he can look so good at times and than so horrendous at other times. Still, 6 shutout innings...how can you not like that? Plus he's flashed the ability to do exactly that in almost every one of his outings (aside from 1-2 starts). Yes the numbers are bad but in his outings I've definitely seen major league potential. He's a s***load better than Broadway, who completely lost it this season (much like Josh Fields lost it, although at least in Fields case it appears it was due to injuries).

QUOTE (Felix @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 03:14 PM) So Jim Thome has sucked this year? Thome sucked for a portion of the year and than got his s*** together. Sure his season totals are hovering at one spot, but you can point to a long stretch where he has been quite productive.

Gavin Floyd you are da man
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 11:16 PM) I already think Swisher is in tier 3 even considering his poor season. He's hitting .220 and is just barely below a league average player pretty much all across the board. If he hits .240, he's an above average player and is most likely playing CF. Even if he's mediocre defensively, give or take a step on that scale, he's very valuable to the club. It's when he becomes a 1Bman that he loses that value, but that versatility is also nice. I think if he had a good season he would jump into tier 2, though everyone in tier 3 has the same ability to do so. Point being this is a very nice group of players the Sox have going forward, even though they are an "old" team. I don't give a s*** what the OPS+ or stats say. No one that hits .240 is an above average player, unless of course they hit about 50+ hr's.

QUOTE (Wanne @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 10:29 PM) Until they blow a lead in the 9th inning. Would you rather have Dotel closing? Obviously the core that everybody's mentioned is intregal...but I'm not sure I could put them in any order...they're all a HUGE part of the future. Like you said though...it's very nice having some young studs for the future. I never said anything about Dotel. However, I'm a believer of stock-piling young power arms for the pen and keep them for a good while (you get them cheap for a nice window) and than as they get closer to free agency deal them off for more power arms. If you can consistently do that and develop just some of the arms you acquire you should consistently have a strong bullpen (one that would have a nice mix of vet's/youth).

An Ace in Action; PK's TurnAround
An Ace in Action; PK's Turn-Around By Mario Scalise CHISPORT.COM In some respects, the White Sox are pretty damn lucky to still be in first place with 11 games to go (12 if you include the “if necessary” Tigers game). Everywhere you look they’ve had their bumps, both literally and figuratively. Some in the case of injuries, but mostly from an offense too home run-driven, a defense too unstable, a bullpen approaching chaos, and a rotation one-man short and two high-priced veterans who have failed in key moments a fair share of times this year. Gavin Floyd, however, has been one of the few constants. And by constant I also mean clutch, and ACE. Like plenty of times throughout the season, he showed it again on Tuesday night against the Yankees. Following up on Monday’s loss, where the bullpen played the role of ruiner to a quality outing by Mark Buehrle, Floyd battled through seven innings, nine hits and 118 pitches to pick up his 16th win.....MORE
