QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 07:57 AM) ^^^^^^ It seems the old fashioned cassette adapters actually worked better. Yep, thats what I have and it works freaking awesome. I'm lucky I'm one of the few people whose relatively new car (05) actually has a tape deck.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 02:13 PM) I can easily see Fields fading away and never amount to much in the big leagues ever again. We have horribly mishandled him from the end of last season. I don't see how he was mishandled. The Sox kept Crede, Fields isn't getting killed by spending one extra year in the minors. Imo, The only thing that hurt him was injuries and the holes in his swing.

QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 01:12 PM) Hence we dearly hope that Joe Crede ain't a type B FA come the off-season (which unfortunately he probably will be). Why is that? Crede isn't going to be a type A FA. So his only chance is really being a type B FA.

Street's biggest issue has been injuries. When he's healthy he's an above average closer. However, he's clearly not healthy.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 02:07 PM) If I saw it when it came out I might have liked it more. I've grown to dislike Steve Carrell and I've seen a million Will Ferrell movies to know I'm getting tired of him as well. Finally someone else that can't stand Carrell. He usually just pisses me off any seen he's in. Still enjoyed 40 year old virgin and I watch the office but its as if I enjoy it in spite of Carrell.

I actually liked Step Brothers and this is coming from someone who has ripped most of Ferrel's stand alone movies. However, when Ferrell teams up with the other guy in Step Brothers you get some funny movies (ie, Step Brothers and Talledega Nights). Basically put, you team Ferrell up with a couple other people who I can stand and its a good movie. Although Step Brothers did have its slow moments it was as a whole entertaining and had me laughing. Pineapple Express, now that I can't wait to freaking see.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 08:38 PM) Here's the problem with how we handled Fields this year. AAA is full of pitchers with mediocre fastballs. Hell, if you want a guy to see good fastballs in the minors, AA is the league to go to. My brother recently saw 6 straight games started by pitchers who threw slower than 88 mph against the Durham Bulls. The Sox didn't handle Fields wrong. He was ready for AAA and there isn't an issue playing AAA guys. He's stunk this year primarily because injuries have prevented him from playing for any extended period of time. That and a big hole in his swing but that wouldn't have been torn apart whether he was in AA or AAA (if healthy he'd have put up his typical ML minors just like Brian Anderson always did). Thats why clubs need both good scouts and player development people. That way you can not only identify if guys have significant holes, but hopefully correct some of those holes and if the development guys can't than the scouts pass that info to a GM who can trade those players while the value is still there. However, one point I'll agree with you on is related to the talent gap between AA and AAA. If you succeed in AA you can go straight to the majors if you have the tools just as easy as someone who has succeeded in AAA could go to the majors.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 05:32 PM) If KW could have got Street for Fields and Poreda i garuntee you he makes the deal, but according to Cowley, the A's asked for Danks or Floyd to go along with Fields and Poreda. The asking price for guys like Fuentes and Street were beyond crazy. So i dont blame KW on this one. That would have been a terrible trade and I can't stand Josh Fields.

QUOTE (Frankensteiner @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 12:14 PM) If the Sox cared so much about their defense Ken Griffey Jr. would never start a game in CF. The difference between Griffey & Swisher isn't comparable to the difference between Fields and Uribe defensively. Not to mention the fact that people are really pushing it if they believe that Josh Fields is capable of hitting .250 right now. I realize he did some nice things last year but the guy has a s***load of holes to his game and has been getting PWNED by major league pitching thus far this year (and has not done crap against minor league pitching). I realize injuries are a factor but bottom line is Fields swing is a mess and he's a significant downgrade defensively. Hell, I don't think anyone could even tell me with a straight face that he is that much of an upgrade offensively over Uribe (not with the way Fields is swinging the bat right now). Stick with Juan, at least than we can have one player on the field that can catch the f***ing ball.

A 0.00 ERA since implemented. Sox are also 1-0 since it was implemented (and Minny is 0-2).
-
Or maybe just stick Clayton Richard in the pen. He can put up as s***ty numbers as Eyre and some of the other guys mentioned but at least he has upside and a nice looking arm (plus he has flashed the ability to get big leaguers out in his short stint, although he has also wet the bed). Still, there is something to be said about bringing a lefty out of the pen who can hit 94, throws strikes, and gets a lot of ground balls.
-
I'm perfectly content with Uribe until Crede comes back. Uribe is a f***ing stud defensively and right now I take great pleasure in having at least one player on the team that can catch the f***ing ball.

QUOTE (hawksox13 @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 11:07 AM) I must be in the vast minority here, because I didn't see a whole lot in Richard that made me think much about his future with the White Sox. His stuff is average/below average, his motion isn't smooth, his location wasn't great, and his presence on the mound was shaky at best(getting rattled/giving up the big inning). I don't think we'll see him consistently in the White Sox starting five in the future. I'm chalking him up(probably too early) to being another in the sad recent history of failed number five starters. For once, I'd like to see the White Sox bring up a pitcher who has a high ceiling. I've had enough of the Broadway's, Diaz', Danny Wright's, Haeger's, and Richard's. If I'm going to see a guy go through some type of rookie pains, at least let it be a guy like Poreda. At least he would be a guy that I could say, wow, we may have something here! I know, I know, Pereda isn't ready right now, but neither is a guy like Richard. The difference is, a guy like Poreda can make some mistakes down the middle of the plate and get away with it because he has plus stuff. So his struggles/mistakes may not be as noticable as a guy like Richard, who's just that, he's just another guy. Technically speaking Felix Diaz was hyped as having a high ceiling. It didn't turn out to be the case because his stuff wasn't near as good as advertised. I don't recall the Sox really using Haeger much, but if your going to put Danny Wright in the same group of those guys your nuts. Wright had as good of an arm and build as pretty much anyone in the current Sox rotation. Good velocity on the fastball, a very nice knuckle-curve. He had issues with his command and whenever it appeared he was going to figure things out he'd get hampered with an injury. Hell, I'd take a 22 year old version of Wright over every guy in the Sox minor leagues (hate to say it, because it wasn't like he was an uber top prospect or anything but he was definitely above average) with the possible exception of Poreda (Poreda throws from the left side and has a little better velocity, albeit a less proven arsenal).

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 10:56 AM) Wassermann since his callup: 6.1 IP, 6 H, 4 BB (2 IBB though), 0 K, 2.84 ERA. He's starting to look like he might be back to 2007 form. I'd keep him around for now. Also, I suggested this in the minor league thread... I have a feeling they are protecting Poreda, so if they send down Logan (which I think may happen), I think they'll call up Whisler. Not because Whisler is more talented (he's not), but because Poreda already has a ton of value. Whisler is a big question mark - no one can see a reason why he's doing so well in Charlotte. I think they may want to look at him for a week or two out of the pen, then bring Logan back for the stretch run. There is zero reason the Sox would bring up Whisler just to see for a week or two if he has what it takes (I've seen him pitch on a few ocassions and I can flat out tell you that he doesn't). Maybe I'll be wrong and when used as a reliever he'll turn into one of those guys that ends up being very effective because pitching out of the pen lets him pitch with an increased velocity. However, if the Sox want a lefty in the pen, they aught to move Richard there. I know he struggled with some big innings but I'd feel quite confident in him as the guy in the back of the pen (plus he showed a pretty good knack at getting ground balls so he could develop into a good guy to bring in when you are looking for that key DP out of the pen).

Ancient Soxfan Ponders Schoolyard Days

I moved this over to PHT. I think its a cool thread and something with the idea of promoting the play of baseball (whether its older guys getting together or kids) is something I'm always for. I figure over here it will get a little more exposure. I know I think back (I'm not even old, just 25) to when I was a kid and we were always playing all sorts of minor variation of baseball games (and other games for that matter). It was always a total blast and now kids today I swear its like all they have is video games. Hell, I played plenty of video games as I came from a golden era and got to experience Mario Bro's when it was brand new, but video games never got in the way of kids going out and having fun. On our street cars would always have to go about a mile an hour through the whole neighborhood in the summer as there was always a plethora of us out there, most of us with blood running down or legs from all the times we'd do something stupid and end up laying out on the asphalt. -
Pretty cool stat heads. I was able to figure it out, shockingly enough.

Thi sis at least entertaining.

It should be noted that this guy was a top 7 round talent, if not a top 5 round talent. Shirek is a legitimate pitching prospect with a nice set of tools.
