This is kind of puzzling. Why would the Nats trade away a pitcher that is 23. Anyone want to tell me something about this guy. Ie, is he for real and are we talking about a nice long-term acquisition or are we talking about a guy thats been pitching way over his head, despite being young. You have to like the fact that he has fewer hits than innings pitched, but he has thrown a decent number of walks and doesn't get a ton of k's. Is this guy going to get lit up in his transition from the NL to AL. Also, we have to be talking about a package which involves both Fields & Poreda correct (why would the Nats trade a 23 year old without getting significant pieces in return). Hell looking at his minor league numbers, the guy just shot through the system. 2006 was his first full season and he was nothing short of mediocre, than 07 he goes from High A to the Majors. 08 he spent the entire time with the Nats.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 08:48 AM) On this season, I'm really not sure about Griffey being a huge upgrade over Swisher. Griffey's numbers are only slighly above Swisher's when you factor in ballpark factor, and a decent chunk of that can probably be explained by "Which player is hot right now". We're talking an OPS+ of 104 for Griffey and 98 for Swisher, and Griffey's been hot while Swisher's been cold for the past 2 weeks. Swisher technically only had one extended hot streak, aside from that he's been absolutely terrible. Griffey has been far more consistent and the only significant slump he had (IIRC) was the one which occurred when he was pressing for #600.

I have questions as to how Griffey will handle CF, but having Anderson as a defensive backup should work out well. Griffey is a significant upgrade offensively over Konerko & SWISHER. Note that I include Swisher in the equation as I personally have no problem moving Swisher and staying with Konerko (this is if the Konerko is in fact 100% healthy). That said, it sounds like Konerko will be benched for the time being. Still, I expect him to get some playing time since Griffey can't possibly be expected to play CF every day (ie, he'll need at least 1-2 games off a week). I assume Wise will be sent down with the Sox adding someone from the minors (or the trade market) to the pen. In terms of what the Sox gave up. Masset is an arm I like but had little value to the Sox and really just needs a shot to pitch in a low pressure situation and get things figured out (that wasn't going to happen with the Sox). Richar is toolsy but I'm not saddened by his loss since I prefer Getz (who I believe is a much more intelligent and well rounded ball-player, although much less toolsy). I don't see the Reds interest in Richar unless they plan on moving him to SS. In general neither Masset or Richar were what I'd consider "key" minor leaguers. Both were on the wrong end of the development curve (ie, mid 20's without yet establishing themselves in the bigs). I also think the Sox could end up getting a comp pick out of this. At first I thought no, Sox wouldn't offer arbitration in fear of Griffey accepting, however, think about it. If the Sox make a couple moves which would basically block any spot where Ken could play, do you really think he'd accept arbitration (someone will at least offer him a 1yr 10M type of deal and I think he'd take that before he'd take going to arbitration on a team where he wouldn't be an everyday player).

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 07:56 AM) I think I've got this figured out... Swisher's headed back to Oakland in a deal involving Duchscherer, whom KW has been after for a couple of weeks. I could see a deal centered around Swisher involving Duch and Street (obviously the Sox would give up more than just Swisher).

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 11:28 PM) Oh there's that 5-10 years again...I don't think anyone used the word all-star though. He bailed the Sox out in a must-win situation though to keep them in first place...he's thrown over 130 innings in a White Sox uniform this season and still has a great ERA...how much more do you want him to prove himself? Floyd starts game 2 of the playoffs for me right now...that means you better be getting an ace pitcher in return to even consider dealing him.

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 11:07 PM) Again i shall state..... The sox are not offering OC to the A's nor are the A's interested. Bolney saide "The Sox and A's are talking about Street.......and the Sox are offering OC out there, blah blah, the Dogers may be interested" THE A's DO NOT WANT OCAB I hadn't gotten through the entire thread so I saw that at a later point.

QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 07:10 PM) You pack Masset's bags. I'll drive him to the airport. Then the Sox should promote Derek Rodriguez from Charlotte. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...&pid=457561 Rodriguez has a very nice arm that gets good sink and a real good slider. I'd consider him a legit relief prospect and I would not be surprised at all if he has a prominent role in the Sox pen in the future. I say this about very few relief prospects in our system, but Rodriguez is a legit relief prospect.

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 09:17 PM) He did terrible in the majors which is why he's back in the minors. He was never healthy at the major league level and he's kind of stuck behind players right now. I don't think people realize just how talented this guy was prior to his injuries (he was easily one of the 10 best prospects in all of baseball at one point and we are talking about a guy with 40-50 HR power).

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 08:20 PM) Yeah, possible 3-way deal with Dodgers. Also, don't underestimate OC's value to some teams that value compensation picks. Aka, Oakland. Beane values comp picks more than any GM in baseball (and he's smart for it).

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 09:46 PM) I love Manny sometimes. Pretty much all the time. I'm not going to lie, I'd do anything to get him on the Sox, anything.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 09:09 PM) http://www.palmbeachpost.com/marlins/conte...730ramirez.html The Palm Beach Post has a tentative deal in place that looks like this: The Marlins would get Ramirez for Hermida, right-hander Ryan Tucker and two other prospects, with those four players being flipped to Pittsburgh for outfielder Jason Bay and left-hander John Grabow. The Red Sox would send the Marlins enough cash to cover the remainder of Ramirez's contract, as well as a prospect to be announced. Pittsburgh would get Hermida and three prospects - two from Florida and one from Boston. One of the Marlins' prospects is believed to be Tucker Then from Rotoworld via SI.com's John Heyman: If this deal doesn't get done Will Carroll won't be the only one with egg on his face. I can't see how Boston could do this deal without Pittsburgh. Well I see how they could if you get a new 3rd team involved but getting another 3rd team invovled isn't easy. The REd Sox couldn't possibly deal Manny without getting another bat or impact player in return that could help them this season, right?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 08:17 PM) Are you counting 2 draft picks on their side also? I'll bet they have an arrangement that ManRam will not have his option picked up and will decline Arb if that goes through. I've read in a few papers that Man Ram is going to make a stipulation before accepting a trade that the team will not exercise his options, thus allowing him to become a free agent. Of course I haven't seen that mentioned with this proposed deal.

QUOTE (JFields27 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 08:00 PM) Buster Olney just said the Sox offered Orlando Cabrera to the A's for Street. I dont know who else has posted that but interesting. For the Manny trade, the Pirates got raped, unless that prospect they got from the Red Sox is SS Jed Lowrie, and I dont know who they would get from the Marlins. I would trade OC for Street and Crosby. I know the A's have little use for OC but Beane values 2 draft picks more than any other GM in baseball. Crosby hasn't lived up to his MVP hype of a few years ago and has had a hell of a time staying healthy. Still he has nice ability.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 07:51 PM) What a pleasant game to watch. Shows something about the posters on this site when loser threads are posted the instant the last out is recorded but a winner thread is like 10 minutes after the game. I just want to say f*** YES GAVIN FLOYD. Anyone that wants this guy dealt is not smart. Unless the Sox are getting pack a star in the package (and one that will be around for a number of years), Floyd should be untouchable (as with Danks/Ramirez/Quentin).

7/30 - White Sox @ Minnesota Twins (7:10pm WCIU)

Alright Gavin, kick some ass tonight!! -
QUOTE (stretchstretch @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 01:39 PM) then again look at the names in the Twins rotation, if they make the playoffs, with that group of nonames and a lineup that is very avg, no one would be figure them to be an automatic first round exit The Twins won't win a world series and if your not capable of winning the series than I question giving up anything significant. Bottom line, this Sox team as is is potentially good enough for the playoffs. Thats about it and the only way I'd consider them World Series contenders is if there pitching gets hot (I expect Floyd/Danks to tire out) or if they acquire a Halladay type guy. Anything less puts them short of being a true World Series contender. I say that in the sense that acquiring Roberts as is, while losing Floyd doesn't make the Sox anymore of a World Series contender as they already are. Same with Duscherer. He isn't the missing piece, even if your not subtracting from the major league team.
-
I actually think Owings could be a good buy. He hasn't given up a ton of hits despite a ridiculously high ERA and I still think he's at least a league average pitcher who will be under the teams control for a few years. However, I don't see the Dbacks offering those type of chips without getting better now. It would have to be a 3 team deal with Owings/Tracy coming to the Sox and Fields/Poreda going to another team, possibly with an additional prospect or two from Arizona (or Chicago), in exchange for a legit bat.
-
My guess is if the Sox acquire Roberts and don't trade OC, you'd see Ramirez move to CF with Swisher/Paulie splitting time at 1B (Swisher would also rotate into the OF). This would be a serious offensive upgrade. However, if you are giving up Floyd you've now all of a sudden torn up the rotation. A rotation of Danks, Buehrle, Vaz, Contreras, Richard isn't going to do s*** in the playoffs. In fact, with that s***ty rotation you better be scoring 10 runs a game just to make the playoffs.
-
Sending Floyd in a deal for a 30+ year old 2nd baseman is f***ing retarded. Plain and simple. There is absolutely no logical explanation behind a move. The only way I'd remotely accept is if the Sox than moved Cabrera and were able to get some uber talented young talent in return (which won't happen). JD, thanks for that info. As always, definitely appreciate that "inside" info!!!
-
Damn, didn't see this coming. I'm assuming Brandon Inge will take over the catching duties in Detroit? Farnsworth will be a nice upgrade for the Tigers pen and obviously the Tigers have a great offense with or without Pudge.
-
I'd have a lot of interest in Crosby. He's over-rated by a lot of people but I think he's under-valued as a whole (as he has a lot of nice tools). However, I don't know if there asking price would be similar to the apparent price the O's have for Roberts/Sherril (Floyd & Fields). I wouldn't trade Floyd for anything less than a star player (or another young player whose already proven himself). That doesn't mean Floyd straight up, but I'm talking about Floyd in a package for an ace starter or premiere baseball player (none of which can be rentals). Roberts does not fit that bill and I will f***ing vomit if Kenny makes that rumored deal with Bmore.
-
Alright Paulie, its time for you to start kicking ass!!!

They aught to set the FDIC insured amount to $100K + an inflation adjustment based upon the CPI.

QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 11:31 AM) I thought that was me (just ask Rowand44). My guess would be, the Sox would have to deal an offensive piece (not Konerko unfortunately) or prospects to get him. I would offer Crede straight up, or maybe try to use Fields and get something back along with Tracy (but the D-Backs have a Fields clone in Mark Reynolds I guess). I wonder if they would be interested in Swisher actually? Or Clayton Richard, because they need a 5th starter with Owings in AAA. I remember me and you always dreaming up different ways to get Tracy.
