QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Apr 10, 2014 -> 01:01 PM) Excited for Jaye and Danish. If Jaye turns into a solid ML starter, that will be one of the greatest Sox trades of the last 20 years.

Hahn's Impact on Lineup/Closer Role and the Deadline
QUOTE (Kevtrem @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 04:25 PM) So, Gillaspie batting third and Lindstrom closing games struck me at least somewhat surprising form yesterday. Granted I know its Opening Day and well probably see many lineups, but I can't help but to think about Hahn's impact here. Matt Davidson is the third basemen of the future (technically could be of the present as well), Hahn has made that quite clear. All the beat reports indicate that Nate Jones, Daniel Webb, and now even Maikel Cleto have the potential to be closers. Arbitration statuses of both Jones and Davidson clearly play a role, but I'm thinking more than that. I would say that most believe that Davidson will get significant playing time this year, and I subscribe to this thought process. I believe Gillaspie will be given every opportunity to succeed in the White Sox lineup by batting third, with Eaton getting on and Abreu as protection. I think Hahn is fluffing Gillaspie, if he is competent he should have at least 30-40 RBI by the deadling, in hopes of an overpay and vacating the third baseman duties. I see the same situation with Matt Lindstrom. We saw in the offseason, people overpay for saves. If Lindstrom succeeds in the closer role, his stock skyrockets and the Sox continue collecting young players at the deadline. It may be wishful thinking, but if the Sox do intend to trade Gillaspie and Lindstrom at their peaks of value (using generic stats), we could have another very productive deadline. Alexei and Beckham could be on the move with the middle infielder depth in the Sox system. Thoughts? I don't agree with all of these characterizations. Lindstrom actually had closer experience and, really, most of the rest of the pen has better jam-relieving stuff. You don't need to put your best reliever as closer. He was the logical choice to me. And a bonus is hopefully he can get fluffed up. Gillaspie's played for one year. There was no reason to give up on him. It's like the second there's scent of depth, we always have to move some guy. Davidson needs work on his defense and to reduce the Ks. No need to rush him. I think we'll move some players in July, but we don't need to do any lineup contrivances to achieve that.

Under over 75.5 wins
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 08:48 AM) Keith Law has the Sox in fourth in the AL Central at 77-85. And he said we could beat .500 if things break right. That's the most optimistic prognostication I've ever read from Law.

Matt Lindstrom is the closer
Good choice for closer. The rest of the pitchers are better suited to getting us out of jams. Lindstrom had closing experience and can handle clean innings. Good way to dress him up for a nice July trade.

Rosters for the Minors
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 09:37 PM) Or Heath. Or that lefty who gave up the bomb against Adrian Gonzalez in late 2012...can't remember his name now. Think he was injured last season. Or Purcey, although his stats were actually quite decent in an Ehren Wasserman type of way... Don't forget Troncoso.

Rosters for the Minors
I see Omogrosso was released and the Sox have sold off a few organizational pitchers in the last week.

Beckham, Keppinger to DL
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 30, 2014 -> 04:01 PM) They're not going to just dump or completely bench DeAza and Beckham. Hahn will wait until/unless he can get a reasonable return, if possible. As he should. This idea of giving players away, which would require a rush-job with Semien to accomplish, is daft.
-
2014 Draft class
As of now, I'd go for his top 2 HS pitchers or the Vandy pitcher.
-
2014 Draft class
Law's top 6 are pitchers, with Rodon now at 3 (stuff way down) and Hoffman at 6 (breaking ball not there).
-
Rosters for the Minors
so did the Sox move Molina to the pen, or is his status that of an organizational minor leaguer at the tender age of 24.

Did MLB (and Hahn) miss on Hanigan?
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 30, 2014 -> 08:17 AM) The White Sox rotation is basically in place to win, if not now, at least in 2015. The White Sox can't afford to have the worst catcher in baseball again that season if they realistically hope to compete. Yes they can, if he handles the position defensively and we get quality production out of 2B, 3B and LF, which we haven't in a while. Anyway, if he hits 190 again, a marginal upgrade won't be hard to find....just no reason to use resources for a mediocre player at this point.
-
Would you trade for Rasmus THIS season...
Rasmus is basically De Aza with 7-10 more homers. I wouldn't load the truck for that. Ideally we'd like more power in LF anyway

Final roster moves
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 30, 2014 -> 01:25 AM) Maybe a future pen arm from what I hear. High upside no control. Just as soon wait it out and see if we can do better. We don't know what Semien will do in the majors and Beckham actually improved some last year.

I wouldn't sign a pitcher because I think the marginal productivity from a 2nd number 1 isn't as great as the marginal productivity from other investments, including plugging some holes (perhaps including lower in the rotation - we'll see) and getting another real hitter on this team.

3/28 at Birmingham
QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 07:18 PM) De Aza is a much better baseball player. Likely has more trade value, too. He does, but the teams interested in him have nothing to give or don't want to (like the Twins). We need some fat teams interested in him. If he has a good 2 months, this should open up. No hurry.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 05:25 PM) Quintana will always be a victim of Buehrle-itis. While Jose throws harder, the majority of scouts and baseball people would argue that 2's should have dominating stuff and miss tons of bats. Part of it is stubborness, the fact that the Yankees missed so badly on him that other teams are waiting for the other shoe to drop...not in Phil Humber fashion, but they think there will eventually be some type of regression, instead of more continued improvement. He's supposedly the hardest worker on the team, or one of the top 2-3. That bodes well, going forward. Just from going by the discussion over the last couple of days, most would argue he was definitely a 2 last year (in terms of his overall body of statistics) and even a 1 on the bottom 5 teams, but that the contract he signed would work out just fine if he slipped back to a 3 or even 4 type, meaning an ERA much closer to 4 than to 3. Then if he's a 2 and others view him as a 3, why in the world would you trade him for the return of a #3, especially as he's signed to a contract of a #4? Heck, why do we want to trade him anyway? Sox don't do long rebuilds.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 05:07 PM) The Brewers have a legit shot at the wild card. Sure, if everything falls apart, maybe they go down that road...but then picking him up for just 1 1/2 seasons, that's not in the current Hahn model of sustainable success either. Simply because of the fact that you'd probably be losing him precisely at the time you would most need him...going into the 2016 season. Then, if they did blow things up, they'd be looking for young prospects, which is precisely what we don't have in abundance, since we need the best prospects for the rebuild. They're going to need a lot more than Rienzo, Carlos Sanchez or Trayce Thompson types. For example, would we be willing to part with Beck and Semien for 1 1/2 years of Gallardo? It's a bit like the Wil Myers for James Shields move, then, although Myers was/is 5-10X the prospect of Beck or Semien. If you were the Brewers, would you trade him for Micah Johnson and Beck, for example? No, I wouldn't trade all that for a #3. Sign one if we must. I trust our ability to develop and find pitchers though. We're going to need at least 2 more real hitters. I think teams missed the boat not offering something decent for De Aza this spring...I think he has a good year, and will have a higher price in July. Then again, if he does hit well, and A Gracia and M Davidson develop, we may have a quality core and then can concentrate our big move on a Catcher. I don't see the Brewers contending - they have a staff of #3s...that won't cut it.
