McCain on the Minnesota Bridge collapse... It was Porks Fault or... it could be from lack of inspections. I also heard Apollo 13's o-ring failure was porks fault. As was the Titanic and Princess Diana's death.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 01:39 PM) you didn't show any ID to register to vote? hmmmm.... I did it through the mail. No ID required.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 11:34 AM) Well forget about Obama for the moment... that glitch will confuse and disenfranchise people who aren't affiliated with a party, and that's a load of crap. The title of their article is a little biased, but yea... it sucks for any independent voter.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 28, 2008 -> 07:55 PM) Don't you need to show some sort of identification to register to vote? I don't see why it's a problem showing some ID to actually vote. When i voted on SuperTuesday, I was never asked to show ID. Neither was my wife.

Ok, i did some thinking here. I needed soem time to flush this out in my head. I understand the argument that this is a poll tax. in a way, you can argue it is. BUT, one of the biggest complaints about the current election system is voter fraud. We joke in Chicgao, "vote early and vote often". With a Non-ID system, i can just walk in, vote on behalf of my sick father and walk out. Maybe he wanted to vote for Clinton? Too bad. i voted Obama for him. Then go to my polling location and vote as myself. ID helps cut down on voter fraud. i think that is the base argument here.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 08:32 AM) It's the equivalent of putting a band-aid over your chest when you're having a heart attack, exactly. Ad campaigns like that are pretty effective too, because most people don't realize it's just a band-aid, and it's not going to help anything, so you can effectively portray someone as favoring oil companies over the people and they usually take it at face value just because they need something to be mad at. That's what I have really come to hate about politics. Presidents and presidential candidates like to look in the short term. What makes me look good now. Not what makes the country better. That's why i like Barack. He seems to have a more long term look at how this country needs to work. I think he said something to the effect that the gas tax holiday was the equivalent of one tank of gas over the course of 90 days. Some say this $600 tax rebate program wont work, how will one tank of gas?

QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 08:05 PM) Yeah, me too. But then again we're not talking about the most rational group of people either. That, sir, is an understatment

QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 05:05 PM) Actually - and I was surprised to read this - I was reading some law enforcement assessment from somewhere (I forget which state, and obviously I can't link you to it so you just have to take my word for it) and it said that the writings on white supremacist websites have been basically saying Obama is the lesser of three evils because they see McCain and Hillary as being owned by the Jews and Israel. Take that for what it's worth, but remember, we're talking about white supremacists. So they don't want to see them in office and they'd rather see Obama get elected, even though they hate it, because he hasn't been corrupted yet. WOW! Weird! That caught me off guard.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 05:06 PM) I can understand McCain. It's just that his vision of some imaginary victory, that the war on terror will suddenly just rectify itself or whatever pending what we do with Iraq within a visible and reasonable time frame, is delusional. I think that is what the Democrats need to get across to the American people. It's not about staying there 100 years. I am ok with that if there is almost 100% peace like in Korea. The problem? Korea is divided. That is how peace was made. And no one is proposing "partitioning" Iraq. Therefore, there will be no peace in Iraq for a VERY long time. So, at what point in the future does McCain expect there to be no fighting? They never answer. They dont know! It's not about being there for 100 years. That's just a good sound bite. It's about when the deaths stop that lead to the 100 years of peace... and there is no view of that in the near future.

Indiana / North Carolina primary election thread

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 02:55 PM) Survey USA hits N.C. Obama 49, Clinton 44. Ouch. It AMAZES me how many "bell weather" people there are out there. Watch the polls. The moments Clinton or Obama lose a state, they drop 5+ points. Then they go back up. It's like "OMG! They're sinking they can never win". Then a week later they are ok and go back to where they were. I actually have lost some faith in voters that they are so wishy washy that a loss in a state thousands of miles away effects their vote. -
I like how Newsweek put it: "Obama Throws Wright Under the Bus, Runs Him Over, Puts the Vehicle in Reverse and Repeats"

Interesting take. There flaws in the logic (such as delegates who might switch to Clinton), but it's an interesting numbers game... 43 Superdelegates to End It

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 24, 2008 -> 06:48 AM) Are you going to start posting all of the negative McCain stories now, like you have been the Hillary stories? If you are, could you put them in a general election thread, and not here? Thanks. If you read what i said afterwards. I am not saying this is negative of McCain. Yes the article might be framed negatively, but i think it is worth debating. Heck, i am torn on the issue. I dont see this as anti-McCain.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 24, 2008 -> 09:07 AM) For 99.99% of the students that recite the pledge, it is a mind numbing rote exercise that means zero. So say it in any language. In fact, I think saying it in your non native language actually makes you think about the words and perhaps will break through the rote recital. I have to use a religious example here, but it's the best analogy to what you just said. I work for a Lutheran church and school. We hold a weekly chapel service for the kids every Wednesday. When one fo the teachers leads it, he tends to use a version of the Lord's Prayer that uses different wording than the one we say in church. He explains that it makes the kids THINK about what they are saying, rather than just reciting from memory.

QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Apr 24, 2008 -> 08:10 AM) The last thing I want to do is hijack this thread, but when I read your posts 'a little from the right' or 'centrist' is not even close to what comes out. I dont mean that as demeaning either...diff strokes for diff folks. I just would never take you for a centrist and am curious what views you hold that makes you think you are. oh totally understand. I think I may come across very liberal on here. But that is only because I am for Obama. I call myself a moral conservative and social liberal (social isnt the best word), I cant recall ALL my points on either side, but here are a few... Right: Anti-Abortion of any kind Anti-Gay Marriage Leaning against stem cell research, but I am rethinking it Left: Pro Universal Healthcare Anti-"Big Business" / I tend to support middle-lower class agendas Leave Iraq Now Those are just a few. I know there are more on both sides, but I cant think of all of them or I dont have a firm stance one way or the other.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 23, 2008 -> 02:16 PM) Also, Iowa has historically had one of the most educated populations in the country, and those folks tend to favor Obama heavily. This is a fascinating chart...
