  1. I will admit I didn't read the article. But Omar can kiss my ass and good riddance. You're like 60 and shouldn't be playing that much anyway. Go play bingo or something.
  2. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 06:55 PM) Matt Garza pitched well this year and got zero support from his offense. 3.32 ERA, 2.95 FIP. Scott Kazmir is another story. He is worthless now. Once again, the Angels took on garbage and gave up some talent. That wasn't my point. The point was the Rays were able to deal Garza without losing anything from the big league club because they had Jeremy Hellickson ready to go.
  3. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 06:45 PM) You said the Sale pick will be a failure if he doesn't make a successful transition to a starter. I see a whole lot of mediocre-to-bad taken in the 10 picks after him to the point where if at worse he is a nasty LH reliever I think he'll surpass those taken in the 10 picks after. You don't see anything. The '10 draft is barely two years old.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 12:20 PM) Like they did with say...Edwin Jackson... Sigh. And Scott Kazmir and Matt Garza.
  5. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 08:18 AM) LOL, J4L, you are sure flippant with your definition of "best". It can change at any time No, this is inaccurate. The two best all-around players in baseball are Tulo and Longo. They do it both offensively and defensively at premium positions. You can find a 1B or LF at Walmart (unless you're the Sox, and you're giving JP 700 at bats). But those positions are so much easier to fill.
  6. And LH just owned J4L. I totally forgot about that. Damn you, JPN.
  7. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 06:19 PM) 5.1 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, Halladay-esque. lol. Who the hell ever compared him to Halladay?
  8. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 06:06 PM) Look at the 10 or so picks after Sale. Are you disappointed the Sox didn't take any of those instead? Irrelevant. I'm looking long-term here. We desperately need an infusion of talent. Whether it be SP or position player. The relievers are for the 5th round.
  9. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 03:18 PM) This That postponed game really screwed Detroit, I like JV over Captain Cheeseburger twice in a best of 5, then take my chances to try to take 1 of the other 3 games not started by the best pitcher in MLB. Meh. That's really no excuse. Everybody is drinking the Verlander kool-aid right now (rightfully so). But C.C. was damn near almost as good and has been the better pitcher for the last 3-5 years. The rainout f***ed both teams - equally. But it looks like the Tigers are about to even this thing up, anyway. So nobody will be able to play that card.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2011 -> 09:36 AM) If it is really that easy, why are teams always looking for nasty left handed relievers? I don't know. Why don't you ask this year's playoff teams? And of the teams that do have them, how many went at #13? That's the whole crux of my argument. I don't know. Our recent draft history is so futile that anything that could be considered a "win" will suffice to some. I guess if Gordon Beckham could at least become a really good utility guy that some would be like, "Hey, that's better than nothing. Most draft picks bust anyway." Meanwhile, we're featuring a rotation of Axelrod, Petricka, Humber, Stewart and I guess Floyd in 2013? Maybe another Chris Getz clone at 2B? Yeah, that's a worst-case scenario. But I can't assume FA signings.
  11. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 04:40 PM) I have no doubt Marty is Cowley or his guy on 35th is Cowley. He brought him up in defense when we were talking about how Rock is generally spot on and Marty's guy seemed unproven...he mentioned Cowley "breaking" the story on a riff we've all known about for years. I think I must agree. I thought 2K5 was PMsing. Looks like he was right.
  12. Where the hell did John Axford come from? Nobody knew this dude existed 18 months ago. Again, another reason I refuse to accept Chris Sale settling in as a reliever/closer long-term as anything but failure.
  13. QUOTE (danman31 @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 03:17 PM) Like Addison Reed. The Sox have actually drafted decently in recent years. 3 guys from the 2008 draft are already in the Majors (Morel, Hudson, Beckham) and 2 from 2010 (Sale, Reed). Obviously it's way too early to judge the value of these guys, but I think the draft struggles have firmly fallen on the lack of a budget. Considering they're always in the bottom group for draft spending to have average draft results is a compliment to the scouting and development. I agree with all of this. Well, I don't think all the struggles are from lack of spending. Though that's a big part. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 03:23 PM) If they had picked him in the first 10-15 picks or so in the first round, I would tend to agree. If he ended up like Poreda or Royce Ring, for example. Still, it's going to be a bit of disappointment if he never makes it as a starter, since, as you pointed out, that's the single biggest weakness of our already weak minor league depth. But another example in the past would be someone like Josh Fogg, who was a reliever at Florida and with the Sox...eventually evolving into a pretty high quality starter, enough to start a World Series game. That was my point. Marshall was like a 6th or 7th round pick, IIRC. Sale ending up as a 60-ish inning RP after being selected at #13 overall would be a huge letdown. Sure, anything is better than an absolute bust. But I sure as hell wouldn't score it was a "win" for the organization.
  14. I know it's early. But it looks like we're in for another pitching-dominated postseason.
  15. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 03:02 PM) How exactly did Cowley slap down Soxtalk? I'm not being facetious, I honestly don't know what he means. Wasn't it the AGON thread?
  16. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 02:59 PM) I don't know. Epstein has loaded the Red Sox up with a few bad contracts in recent years. Also, I'd tend to stay away from him and Francona as Boston is a meat grinder and they look like they might be burned out even though Theo is only 37. Lackey and Crawford (especially Lackey) contracts look terrible at the moment. But Theo's overall body of work is staggering. He's one of the best GMs in team sports and if the Cubs get him they'll be damn lucky.
  17. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 02:32 PM) Well this is bad: Joel Sherman I am shocked, but in last 36 hrs every exec talk to says believe #Redsox will give permssion and Theo will go to #Cubs to be GM 36 minutes ago Maybe then he can bring in Dave Martinez and I can quit baseball. That's real bad. That's f***ing terrible, actually.
  18. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 02:23 PM) Maybe, but a nasty left-handed reliever as a worse case scenario is absolutely considered a draft choice win. I wouldn't call it a win. I'd call it a salvage. You're fishin' for studs that you can build your team around long-term. Not the Sean Marshall's of the world. Especially with our current SP dilemma (majors and minors).
  19. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 01:53 PM) The floor for Sale is a nasty (left-handed) reliever. I don't understand how you could think that would be a fail in all honesty. You can find nasty left-handed (or right-handed) relievers well after the first round if you're competent.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 01:10 PM) Aaron Hill's numbers look like they snapped back to normal near-all-star level once he went to Arizona from Torotno. Wonder what's going on with the hitters/hitting coaches up there in Canada where a guy like Hill struggles there then hits .315 once he leaves. Not sure if this is sarcasm or not.
  21. QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 12:15 PM) Sale's floor is nasty reliever, so I'll call that pick a win. That'd be a fail in my book.
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 08:46 PM) Longoria is on a similar deal. I cry whenever I look at that contract setup.
  23. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 08:36 PM) Agreeing to three option years and foregoing two years of free agency seems a bit extreme for only $8 million in guaranteed money. Can you even think of a comparable deal? IMO, Hahn absolutely raped Santos' agent with this deal. Beats getting raped (Peavy, Rios, Dunn, Thornton) for a change.
  24. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 07:53 PM) I would murder someone to have Joe Maddon manage the White Sox. Best manager, gm and player in the league on one team. Yes, Longoria is the best player in the AL when healthy.
  25. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 08:01 PM) Incredibly good point. It somehow makes him look even worse. Hate the mouth, not the man.
