  1. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 03:45 PM) oh, that's too bad I wouldn't wish him or Broadway on the Cubs. Yikes.
  2. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 03:21 PM) What the organization would do and what we would do is likely pretty different. Unless the team falls flat on its face, I don't see them trading him to replace him with Flowers. They've shown that they can be taken at their word, and I'd imagine with AJ taking a pay cut, that he was led to believe that he'd be on the team through the end of his contract. I also don't know how much other teams would pay for AJ with his reputation. That .688 OPS last year and below average defense wouldn't garner much interest either way. Not sure if it was just one of those year's for AJ or was it the beginning of the eventual decline of a 34-year old catcher with a ton of wear and tear on his body. I'm certain the expectation going into last season was that Flowers would be ready to go this year. Of course, he bombed terribly and we were just about forced to bring AJ back.
  3. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 02:17 PM) I guess the invite won't be coming. Shucks. Nobody from that 20-team blob of a league I'm in with you wants to join? Or are they all pretty much from ST?
  4. QUOTE (YASNY @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 12:35 PM) Give it time. If I haven't done it to this point, I'd say it's safe to say it's not going to happen. Like Kalapse posted, there is no mystery whatsoever to what you're getting from Dunn. Expecting his K-rate to drop at this stage of his career is the ultimate exercise in futility.
  5. Not even I can find a negative in the Dunn signing.
  6. QUOTE (Tex @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 11:57 AM) There are people that find flaws in everything enjoy your lives.Walk around noticing the worst in everything, thnk about how s***ty something can be. Go to a game and only have fun if your team wins. Go to a game and only have fun if your team wins easily. But even then, figure out what went wrong and how easily they could have lost. Farm systems haven't been relevant since 1970. The Braves' 15 division titles since '91 vehemently disagree with this assertion. I'd say the Twins of the last decade don't agree much. Or how about the Red Sox? Or do Lester, Buchholz, Pedroia, Youk, Bard and Papelbon not qualify? Phillies won't agree, either.
  7. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 10:29 AM) Humber and Milledge are both garbage to this point; it's what they've proven to be. At least the positions they are fighting for don't matter too much overall. No big deal if these chewed-up scraps make the team. Or Lillibridge for that matter- it's all the same big can a garbage with different levels of optimism poured on top. At least with Milledge he's shown some semblance of the talent, though obviously sporadic, that showed why he was regarded so highly at one point. And he's also 4 years younger than Humber. Big difference between 25 and 29 in this case.
  8. QUOTE (daa84 @ Mar 23, 2011 -> 07:17 AM) this is less about Humber than it is the atrocity that is the farm system right now. Theres absolutely nothing close to being ready on the bump that is even half promising....I don't have a problem really with the way kenny trades prospects, as long as the efflux is balanced by a solid influx of new talent. unfortunately, while we have produced a couple good prospects from recent drafts, there is absolutely 0 depth. Sale is a reliever now, and Hudson is gone. Its pathetic that the best option for the 5th spot in the rotation is a guy we picked up off the scrap heap who has a career 4.49 ERA in the minors. Did somebody say bad farm system? That's like my personal bat signal. Yes, it speaks volumes to the dearth of talent/depth and fundamental flaws in drafting philosophy. Phillip Humber was DFA'd by both the A's and Royals in a span of like 3 weeks. When he's your absolute best option to fill what's destined to be a gaping hole (Like Ozzie, I assume nothing anymore when it comes to Peavy. Until he's on the mound pitching in a game that counts, he's a ghost) in a rotation for a team that's expected to compete. When you have to run Randy Williams and his historic-like suckfest, as Kalapse broke down for us, out there even as often as we did because you don't have a single competent arm in the minors to even hold down a loogy role, yes, there are major problems. And now I'm about to throw up because I typed the name Randy Williams.
  9. QUOTE (qwerty @ Mar 22, 2011 -> 10:45 PM) The ignore feature is pathetic. Wahhhhhhh... i can't handle hearing something i don't like or disagree with. Wahhhhh... so and so is so vulgar... wahhhhhh... so and so is so annoying and stupid. Such is life. Deal with it and move on. Not everyone can coward into a corner and not deal with what is at hand. Well they could i suppose, but nothing would get resolved, and it would be nothing short of disgraceful. Ignoring someone is just letting them get their way. You are being fed right into their hands. Hilarious. It's his right. You couldn't pay me to care. I just don't get why he keeps mentioning it. Like he thinks he's hurting somebody's feelings. Getting on Heads for quoting me because he has to see what I posted? Get a fricken life.
  10. QUOTE (chw42 @ Mar 22, 2011 -> 09:34 PM) It's absolutely amazing how everything has developed with this Bulls team as the season progresses. Rose's defense is now pretty damn good. He's shutting down CP3 and Deron Williams like they're Carlos Arroyo-type point guards. After playing pretty meh for the majority of the second half, D-Rose has turned it up in the last three games. Luol Deng has turned into one of the better SFs in the league. Remember when everyone thought his contract was terrible and hated him? Well, now just about everyone loves him, his biggest fan might be Thibs and for good reason, Deng's an elite defender. Noah and Boozer hasn't worked out as well as everybody thought, but they've played, what, 20 games together? I don't remember things working out this well for any Chicago team since the 05 Sox and maybe the 06 Bears. But this Bulls team has a chance to accomplish something really special. The Bulls have made a fool out of J4L. And I have no problem admitting it. I thought 45-48 wins would be a best-case scenario. Never could've imagined they would be this dominant defensively. I assumed Rose would continue his natural progression. But not to this degree. I still think we lack another wing/guard that can create for others while, of course, getting his own offense. And teams like Boston and Miami, hopefully we only have to play one of them to get to the finals, will do their damndest to exploit this. But it's nearly April and HCA through the east playoffs is looking imminent. Nothing to complain about from me.
  11. QUOTE (hi8is @ Mar 22, 2011 -> 10:03 PM) I really like the ignore feature on soxtalk but i wish it would remove their threads whenever someone is replying to them... as was the case here with Heads... Since you reply to the guy - I have to read his nonsense. Well, actually - not read - just denote as unworthy and move on from. Why does this dude think anybody gives a s*** that he has me/us/them or whatever on ignore? He mentions it every 12 seconds.
  12. QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Mar 22, 2011 -> 10:06 PM) If we don't get the 12th, that's what we'll do. It seems that getting an 11th & 12th team always seems to be a hassle for this league. Wait, we have 11 now, right? You're going to boot somebody?
  13. QUOTE (thedoctor @ Mar 22, 2011 -> 08:45 PM) it wouldn't make you stupid at all if he happened to succeed. just wrong. Then I'll be wrong. Like I'm going to be mad if he helps my team win? But some are acting as if he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Why? He's done nothing.
  14. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 22, 2011 -> 05:15 PM) Instead of signing Crain and Ohman, you would have used which minor leaguers in the bullpen? Instead of signing Konerko, you would have signed which free agent 1B? Or would you have simply used Viciedo? Also, please explain how the moves you're proposing make us better in 2011. You missed the point. I realize those were for the most part, I rather have brought back Putz or signed Scott Downs over Crain, and Ohman sucks, the best options for a team trying to win in 2011. The point is you can't blatantly ignore the farm for years, refuse to ever go over slot and never deal with the agent who represents the top talent yet want to have this strict policy in place. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Mar 22, 2011 -> 05:24 PM) I'm confused. If the Peavy deal were a signing rather than a trade, would you be okay with his contract? I mean, you're advocating dumping an enormous amount of cash and years into a pitcher, yet in other threads lambasting a contract where the pitcher is signed at big money but injured? Well, catastrophic injury is always a risk with pitchers, so you pretty much have to accept it if you want a big signing. I don't see how you can tenably ask for a huge contract pitcher and simultaneously condemn an expensive, injured pitcher. Your larger point about the poor drafting has been pretty much universally conceded, even by KW as far back as 2 years ago when they overhauled the scouting department. Since then, minor league contribution to the big club has increased dramatically. Peavy was damaged goods when we got him. That was the first sign. And like I said to Chicago White Sox, you can't have it both ways. Nothing wrong with not wanting to overpay in years/coin for FA pitchers. But damnit, stop trading away every decent pitching prospect we have, spend some money and draft better and you won't have to. Gio Gonzalez and Dan Hudson would look REALLY good right about now. How come we couldn't pony up for Tanner Scheppers over Josh Phegley in 2009 but we can overpay for mediocre relievers like Scott Linebrink and Jesse Crain and extend garbage like Mark Teahen in what is shaping up as KWs worst move ever?
  15. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Mar 22, 2011 -> 07:59 PM) Can we wait until he fails for us until we pronounce him crap? I understand people are tentative about him as our fifth starter, but, god, it's not like we've ever turned around a former first round top prospect by getting him into our system. If a crazy, suicidal f*** jumps off the top of the Sears Tower (I will never refer to it as the Willis Tower), I don't have to wait until he/she hits the ground to no that fool is dead. s***ty analogy. But same difference. I know you're an optimist. I have no problem with that. It's a natural tendency to think the team that you cheer for and love can do something with a player(s) that nobody else could. But those that are not drinking the kool-aid just because said player happens to be a White Sox shouldn't be looked upon as evil demons that just like to be negative for the sake of being negative. I've said this many times before. If the Cubs were set to insert Humber into their rotation EVERY single poster on this board, and that includes you SS2K5 and JoeCool, would be laughing their asses off. This is undeniable fact. Now if somehow, someway, Humber pulls a horseshoe out his ass and is even serviceable, great. It won't make me feel stupid for not expecting a thing from him this year. He's done nothing in his career, outside of being a high draft pick sever years ago, that warrants any type of faith.
  16. QUOTE (ptatc @ Mar 22, 2011 -> 07:34 PM) I really doubt that happened. It was more likely that Jake just said he felt good and though he could handle it. If they really though it wasn't good for him they wouldn't have let him. I'm sure most of the reason was that he couldn't start the season if he didn't stay on his regular turn. This all turned out to be the wrong decision but that's hindsight. At the time it seemed like he was doing well. So basically, we're going to have to treat him with kid gloves every day for the next two years because he has no idea what his body can and cannot handle? This is not a smartass comment towards you, ptatc.
  17. QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Mar 22, 2011 -> 02:27 PM) Unfortunately, the Sox would be doomed pitching wise if they don't start handing out some long term contracts to good pitchers and continue drafting poorly. All good pitchers command at least 3-5 years on the open market if they are 31 or younger. Aces or borderline aces/#2s command 6-7 years. Carlos Silva got 4 years for christsakes. I know what happened to Peavy would probably make JR want to not give longer than 3 years ever again, but if they don't start doing so, then the only pitchers the Sox would have after this group's contracts expire would be older pitchers or cost controlled pitchers. In other words, if they want to continue this policy, they better hire the best pitching scouts they can and be prepared to pay over slot in the draft so they can build a staff through the draft or trades. I don't want to see the day where we act like any good pitcher in the free agent market is like what a Boras client is now. +1 billion. JR and Co. need to get off their damn high-horses when it comes to this stupid policy. You don't get to have a policy when you've got two starters about to become FAs, one who's agent you refuse to deal with, and your top pitching 'Spect is Addison Reed. KW has traded prospect after prospect after prospect over the last few years and the return has been one year of Nick Swisher, two months of a decrepit Ken Griffey Jr., Javy the sequel and Jake Prior. Instead of extending the Mark Teahen's of the world, handing out 3-4year deals to declining or mediocre relievers, overpaying for a 1B during his age 35-37 seasons because he gave you a world series baseball six years ago, spend some f***ing coin on some new scouts and the draft.
  18. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 22, 2011 -> 04:55 PM) I don't care how much of a competitor Peavy is, or how hard he's trying to come back to be of value to this team. He's nothing but a drain on this team. Go f*** yourself, you glass piece of s***. Lmao. Damn. I thought I was supposed to be the board demon.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 22, 2011 -> 01:44 PM) It's really going to be fun bumping this thread if Jake comes back and throws a shutout in late April/early May. That would more than likely require 100+ pitches without Peavy experiencing soreness in his funny bone.
  20. Nothing says optimal value like a 60 pitch limit by your $16-17 million dollar a year pitcher going into the second month of the season. Peavy won't sniff the White Sox roster until June at the absolute earliest.
  21. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Mar 22, 2011 -> 11:36 AM) Edwin Jackson will win 20 games and sign a contract extension with the Sox. And if he wins 20 games he'll command 5/75. No thanks. Especially when we still have a much better pitcher in Danks to worry about.
  22. I've been either too lazy, drunk high or whatever, so I always forget to ask. Can somebody explain the Peavy insurance policy? Like what if he's out until the all-star break or even the year? What do the Sox collect?
  23. QUOTE (smalls2598 @ Mar 22, 2011 -> 08:22 AM) Pujols is on one of the 2 teams that, as of right now, is not returning. And Stompers has the first pick after keepers, which is round 6. Ahhhhhhh. Did not know that. And that f***ing blows. Lol.
  24. QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 19, 2011 -> 12:29 PM) The Laumann interview wasn't that great. Talked a lot about Sale. I kind of wish Rongey would have asked him how much they scouted Mike Trout in 2009, and why they went with Mitchell. Ranger would never do that. Would've been interesting, though.
  25. QUOTE (whtsoxfan @ Mar 21, 2011 -> 08:09 PM) Be careful what you wish for. There's a reason why Milledge is on a different team every year. I'll take my chances when the alternative is Brent Lillibridge.
