  1. QUOTE (logic101 @ Jul 28, 2010 -> 02:05 AM) A #5 if Hudson can't get it going or Freddy runs out of gas? Probably a post-deadline waiver option...and cheap. He's a free agent at the end of the year. from mlb.com - MILWAUKEE -- Brewers right-hander Dave Bush entered the week with 13 quality starts, just as many as Texas' Cliff Lee, considered the best available pitcher on the summer trade market before he was dealt from Seattle to Texas. Bush had one more quality start than Dan Haren, who has already been traded, and Ted Lilly, who is a staple of rumors. And like Lee and Lilly, Bush is a free agent at the end of the season. Yet Bush, 30, is generating almost no trade buzz. "I get a kick out of teams talking about all of these other pitchers, and [bush] has more quality starts than all of them," general manager Doug Melvin said. "He's pitched as well or better than some of these names I hear on the trade front. So first we had Dipotity or whatever his name is pimping Joe Saunders because of his win total in 2008-2009. Now we've got Melvin using quality starts to somehow put Dave f***ing Bush in the same class as Cliff Lee (who missed the first month of the season) and Dan Haren? What does it really require to be a GM these days? f***ing morons. Maybe I should appreciate KW more.
  2. Is it me, or are the Giants one big bat away from being downright scary? Andres Torres has been one of the best all-around players in baseball. Aubrey Huff's sporting a wOBA of .404. Buster Posey is 1997 Mike Piazza. If Pablo Sandoval starts hitting? Wow. But they've got to upgrade 1B. Travis Ishikawa is too much suck. I don't even have to talk about their rotation (looks like Bumgarner found his velocity). Underrated bullpen. Just a lot to like.
  3. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 11:05 PM) Apparently people think its bad for a team to improve in areas in which they are lacking and that could really help the team. The company I work for does a lot of things well, and in some areas excellent. Does that mean the company should overlook some areas that would help the business overall because the other areas are doing well in the business? No, not at all. The organization should be continually trying to improve all facets, even if they are doing well in some of them. Just wanted to say you've been dead-on with every post you've made in this thread. I think I have to learn how better to express myself without pissing people off.
  4. Alexei is fast becoming one of the most exciting players in baseball. I would get excited about Viciedo. But we all know he won't sniff the lineup tomorrow.
  5. Jose Bautista: 4/4 2 HRs tonight. The Blue Jays announcers were saying that the Jays shouldn't trade Bautista for anything less than 3 blue-chip prospects. I almost choked on my own saliva when I heard that. Oh, Buster Posey is good. RBI double off of Josh Johnson. 20-game hitting streak now.
  6. QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 05:24 PM) If we end up moving Hudson to get a bat (I'm not suggesting we do, just saying what-if we did)... What veteran pitcher might we be able to pick up to fill the back of the rotation for the remainder of this year? (Ignore the 2011 implications for a minute. I'm just trying to figure out if there might be an arm out there we haven't considered that could help us in a pennant push.) For example... Jake Westbrook could probably be had for a song. Not a huge fan. But he could be an asset at the back of a rotation. Others? The pitching market really blows this year. You basically had the big three of Lee, Haren (I still can't believe it), and Oswalt. After that a whole lotta bad.
  7. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 05:00 PM) I meant that the Sox going on a 25-5 run and currently being in first place doesn't answer any deeper, macro-level questions about the overall direction of the organization, its philosophy, what we look like for 2011, what our chances are if we reach the playoffs, how we fare against our own divisional opponents, roster management, and so on. It just means this team was ridiculously hot for 6 weeks and went 25-5, so hot that they caught up and landed in first place. It doesn't tell you how good (obviously not THAT good because maintaining that level of play is impossible) or bad (obviously not bad because bad teams can't win 25 of 30 games) they are. It's not an answer to anything in itself. Excellent post, lostfan.
  8. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 04:56 PM) Smoak is 23 years old, was the 11th overall pick in the 2008 draft, the #13 overall prospect in baseball (Beckham was #20 last year) and hit .293/.411/.461/.872 in 599 PA in the minors between 4 levels over the last 1.5 years. The fact that he struggled in his first 275 major league PA at age 23 didn't change his status as an incredibly valuable young player with huge upside. Smoak is basically = Beckham. This. Also wanted to say that just because the Diamondbacks front office set their franchise back with an awful trade doesn't mean every team has to.
  9. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 04:02 PM) I'm not dealing him for Jason Heyward either. Even with potential mechanical problems (it sounds like we're talking about cars), I'm not trading a talent like that. Heyward may be a once in a generation type prospect, but I just can't justify dealing Strasburg in any fashion. In a 1 for 1, that's the ONLY guy that I'd consider. I still think dominant everyday player > dominant pitcher. No matter how good said pitcher is. This will be a nice debate to have in a few years.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:35 PM) If dumping Boras the day after we drafted D2 isn't a sign that it's at least helpful, I don't know what else is. Of course it wouldn't hurt. But that's as far as it should go.
  11. QUOTE (That funky motion @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:36 PM) Who said he was on the team? I just think if you trade him, you might piss his brother off. Well he wouldn't get pissed off if he didn't eventually want him with the White Sox, no?
  12. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:34 PM) Strasburg does have bad mechanics. http://www.chrisoleary.com/projects/baseba...nStrasburg.html Analysis of Scherzer: http://www.disabledlistinformer.com/?p=476 And I ain't trading Strasburg for anybody not named Jayson Heyward either.
  13. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:30 PM) I don't understand why that would even be a big deal for John. His brother has proven to be a pretty terrible baseball player anyways and he may never make it in the majors anyways. If the Sox can get value at all for Jordan Danks, then they should probably do it. That's why I said "if." But I think it's more perception than reality. Has John even hinted that having Jordan in the organization would play any role whatsoever on if he signs an extension or not? I'm sure he'd love to play with Jordan. But that's about it.
  14. QUOTE (That funky motion @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:20 PM) I wouldn't trade bad Danks, till we sign Good Danks long term I'd trade John Danks yesterday if having his little brother, who's bad at baseball, on the team in any way plays a role in if he signs an extension or not.
  15. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:19 PM) I assume you guys are fine with Carlos Torres being our SP for the remainder of the season? Not at all. No team with Freddy Garcia and Carlos Torres as their 4/5 is fine. But we can't have it both ways. Peavy going down + a farm system thinner than an Olsen twin severely limits your options.
  16. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:14 PM) I'd give up Hudson and D2 or Flowers. I don't forsee Flowers or D2 reaching their potential. Plus we have Mitchell as a backup OF. We need to find some catcher in Cuba somewhere to take over for when AJ retires. I'd easily want to keep flowers over Danks. I'm sorry. Those Ks are just ridiculous.
  17. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:10 PM) Levine says to acquire Dunn it is going to take Hudson + one of Flowers/Morel/Bad Danks. http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/news/story?id=5414243 This is what I was talking about when I said the aftermath of losing Peavy is about so much more than him not being able to take the mound every 5th day. IF Peavy were healthy and we could sign Dunn to an extension, I'd be all over this.
  18. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 03:06 PM) Apparently last week, Rizzo wanted Garza from the Rays for Dunn. http://danny-knobler.blogs.cbssports.com/m...ntryListMiniCnt LOL. Gotta give Rizzo some credit. He's obviously shooting for the stars.
  19. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 02:56 PM) You could at least understand some of their thinking in that trade and you can pinpoint why they made it. They obviously overrated Jackson, but a lot of people did last year. They wanted Jackson because they thought they could win this year. Plus, Kennedy's been a decent pitcher for them, nothing great though. They also had concerns about Scherzer, which isn't surprising. Max's mechanics aren't exactly Cliff Lee-like. The deal's a win for the Tigers, no doubt, but I don't think it was retarded or anywhere near as bad as the Dan Haren deal that just took place. Well I'm not a mechanics expert. Some people think Strasburg has bad mechanics. I just can't, in my mind anyway, justify trading somebody because of mechanics. Unless you really think you're getting a good package back. And Jackson/Kennedy was just not that. But I agree. That deal was nowhere near the abomination that was the Haren deal.
  20. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 02:24 PM) I completely understand the concerns about Sherzer and have expressed the same feelings... however, you don't trade him and Schlereth for Edwin Jackson at his highest value and a mediocre prospect like Ian Kennedy. Thats just dumb. The upside of Scherzer and Schlereth was a lot higher than Jackson and Kennedy. I agree completely. And Scherzer has been pretty damn filthy in his last 11 starts since his return from the minors: 2.73 ERA, .206 BAA, 10.68 K/9. The walks are still an issue. But that's the case for guys like Clayton Kershaw as well. Still a bad trade.
  21. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 02:19 PM) He is a 23-year-old lefty who has good speed, plays great corner OF defense, has maybe one of the strongest OF arms I have ever seen, does not strike out a ton, and generally hits for a good average (.308 minors hitter, and hit .290 last year). He is not having a good year this year, but he is still only 23 years old. There are plenty players better than him, but this thread is calling for a sleeper player, which I assume means a guy we can pick up that no one knows about. I can't imagine his value being too high right now, but then again, AZ may want to keep him for their rebuilding process. At the least, he is better than Mark Kotsay, and him and Rios and Pierre would make a very strong OF defensively. Are you a personal friend of Parra's? You've been on his bandwagon since like March. You get an A+ for dedication.
  22. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 02:06 PM) This is actually my -- possibly irrationally -- worry with Scott. After his recent torrid hot streak his numbers on the year are now some of the best in the game (.404 wOBA); well Luke Scott isn't that good, he's just not. Over the last 3 years his wOBA have ranged from .343 to .365, so my worry is that he's gonna have to bring his overall numbers down to around those levels (maybe a bit higher since he probably won't get to 500 PA) over the final 2 months of the season meaning if you trade for Scott now you could get some absolutely horrible production out of him while he regresses back to the mean. Scott is a lot like Soriano. Ridiculous 3-week stretches in which he looks like 2004 Barry Bonds that manipulates his true talent level. That said, Scott >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Kotsay.
  23. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 01:37 PM) The PTBNL is Skaggs. I don't think they've made "boneheaded" moves. Josh Byrnes was a decent GM. He got Johnson and LaRoche for next to nothing this year in terms of finances. The only real boneheaded move came after Byrnes got fired and the Haren one is definitely that. I still think the Scherzer trade was pretty retarded.
  24. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 12:30 AM) Karma for the Angels? What did the Angels do wrong? It's not their fault this Dipoto character seemingly has the baseball I.Q. of Rodney Dangerfield.
