QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 03:20 PM) The Gamel stuff is just crazy. Jeffress, on the other hand, sounds like the type of guy KW would target. I'm sure he would. Jeffress has some of the filthiest stuff in all the minors. But Jose as part of a trade package? I don't think so.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 03:05 PM) More than anything, he just makes sense to a team like Milwaukee. I don't think anyone's expecting a huge return for him. Like I mentioned above, more to maybe save a few million and open up another spot in the rotation once this team falls out of it. Well when I see names like Mat Gamel and Jeremy Jeffress mentioned it seems like some do expect a better than average return. It's not happening.

I have no doubt in my mind that will see a third consecutive walk-off hit in a few minutes.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 03:01 PM) Dumb enough and just a lack of other arms available. Cool. I'm fine with that. Just please don't act like Jose has legitimate trade value or that teams should be knocking down Kenny's door in an attempt to get a deal done.

Official Buyer or Seller Thread
Do people really believe that a few starts that's come after 3 years of mediocrity by a really, really old guy who's had health issues has much of a trade market? Or are we just hoping that some team is dumb/desperate enough to give us anything of legitimate value for a guy that really has no value?

This Cubs bullpen is pretty predictable. They either walk you or K you. No in between.

Brewers a Good Match
The Brewers need starting pitching A LOT more than they need another bat or even a bullpen arm. I don't see what we could realistically offer them. I see them going really hard after Oswalt.

2009 College Baseball
LSU is just too f***in' good. Arkansas had no chance (especially when you consider they went through just about their whole staff the other night against Virginia). Looking forward to the CWS final.

Rick Ankiel...
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 03:15 PM) Ankiel has a great arm, but Anderson's range is better in center field. Ankiel's UZR before this season was always negative. His lowest was last year at -5, meaning he cost his team 5 runs in the field. Anderson's is barely above average, believe it or not. He has incredible range in right and left, but not so much in center. -5? Wow. I only get to see him when they play the Cubs. He always play a pretty damn good CF when I get a chance to watch him.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 03:04 PM) he left yesterday with an injury, any update? No word as of yet. Be a shame for him to have to miss some time just as he's finally getting his act together.

QUOTE (Special K @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 03:01 PM) At the very most, i'd be willing to put together a Quentin/Beckham package for Ankiel, and I'd be willing to pick up whatever is left on their contracts too. But that's it. 2009 StL 4 HR .307 .417 .724 .245 No thanks, BA is having a great year as he gets more PT. Once Quentin gets back, we're going to have too many outfileders as well. And no, i'm not looking to replace his stick with JD's when he leaves. A great year? You're kidding, right? And Ankiel, even in a year in which he's been injured, is still putting up comparable/better numbers than Brian. As I posted earlier, if you combine his 2007/2008 seasons, which come out to a full season worth of games (167 games to be exact), you get .270/36/110. Brian couldn't put up those numbers over a full season if his life (and the existence of mankind for that matter) depended on it.

QUOTE (kane0730 @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 02:32 PM) If he comes somewhat cheap, I'd take him. Can play all 3 OF positions, and we can wave bye-bye to Wise. And Brian. At least as a starter.

QUOTE (rangercal @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 02:24 PM) I like the idea. 1 Salary is right 2 His stock is LOW. We can probably get him for close to nothing 3 He is a left handed Pull hitter, which works well at our park Do it Kenny! If you combine his 2007/2008 seasons (167 games), you get .270/36/110. Can't really take too much from this year as he's been injured. Not sure about his glove. But in the games I've seen, he's crazy athletic and has pretty good range.

6/19 Sox @ Cin - 6:10pm CDT - CSN
Saying that the Reds have been brutal offensively is being too kind. Willy Taveras is 1 for his last 46? WTF? I don't know what the hell is wrong with Jay Bruce. Other than Brandon Phillips, there's nobody doing a thing for them offensively.

I'm back on the Chris Young bandwagon. June splits: .276/.400/.569/.969. Also 7/7 in SB attempts.

QUOTE (beck72 @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 11:41 AM) Now, say the Red Sox called and offered Michael Bowden or Clay Bucholz for Alexei.... would you hang up? That said, I like Alexei's power and ability to play SS and 2b. But do the sox move Beckham away from his natural position, to play 3b, or move Getz who looks like he's from Minnesota farm system [something sox fans have been wanting more of], and hope teams don't realize he can't hit a decent breaking ball? Throw in one of those two guys you mentioned along with Jed Lowrie and you've got a deal, IMO.

Linebrink
QUOTE (scenario @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 12:50 PM) 10 days ago Linebrink was a lights-out set-up guy having a great year... And now a grand total of four and one-third innings of pitching later, it's time to push the panic button? Yawn. That's like 4 or 5 appearances for a reliever. Not time to panic. But we simply have zero margin for error. The Red Sox can afford a chokejob like yesterday every now and then. We can't.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 12:44 PM) So would Bartolo Colon have the biggest spread between his ERA and his FIP in the big leagues? That honor would go to Kevin Millwood. I don't know how he's doing what he's doing (especially in that ball park), but it doesn't figure to last much longer.

Linebrink
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 12:39 PM) So, if I'm reading those #'s right, Linebrink has had some shoddy defense behind him this year compared to last since the DER behind him has gone down...but he's also been quite lucky with the other balls hit in play, since his FIP ERA is much higher than his normal ERA? Does that just say that his ERA is being held down because a lot of runs have been unearned? There you go! That's the one thing I like about most of these saberstats. The standard stats can tell a bold face lie sometimes. If you look at Linebrink's normal ERA by itself you would think he was having a dominating year. We all know that hasn't been the case.

Linebrink
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 12:03 PM) DER and FIP? Care to give some details on those? DER is defensive efficiency ratio. It's kinda like BABIP except it's for defense. Tells you the percentage of batted balls in play that are turned into outs. FIP is fielding independent pitching (this is a saber stat that I'm a big fan of). It's a metric that measures everything a pitcher has 100% control of (walks, K's, HR's HBP). If a guy's normal ERA is a lot lower that his FIP ERA than that suggests he's getting lucky with balls in play. And vice versa if his normal ERA is higher than his FIP ERA.

6/18 Games
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 11:17 AM) We have to remember that Shelby could always move to back to 2B where his bat would project much much better. Wasn't he removed from 2B for a reason? Wasn't he a butcher over there?

6/18 Sox @ Cubs 1:20 CSN
Gavin Floyd's last 5 starts: 5-0, 1.67 ERA, .224 BAA, BB/9 1.91, K/9 8.60, K/BB 4.50. Yeah, this guy has been pretty good. I definitely like our chances in this one.

Steroid Era HR King
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jun 17, 2009 -> 09:34 PM) WOW, 1998 was a hilarious year.... Mark McGwire 70 HR Sammy Sosa 66 HR Ken Griffey Jr. 56 HR Greg Vaughn 50 HR Albert Belle 49 HR Joe Canseco 46 HR Vinny Castilla 46 HR Manny Ramirez 45 HR Juan Gonzalez 45 HR Andres Galarraga 44 HR Rafael Palmeiro 43 HR LOL@Greg Vaughn. It'd be easy for me to slam all these guys. But I'd be a hypocrite to do so. I absolutely loved the offensive explosions from the mid 90's through the first few years of this decade. I love slugfests. Unless it's the Sox, in which case the ideal for me would be for them to win every game 10-0, I love 12-10 games.
