2009 Cubs thread
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 02:55 PM) Fukodome welcome back to reality. You do suck. His average came way down. But he's still an asset with an OBP of over .400.

2009 Cubs thread
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 01:40 PM) I just realized you could make a legit case for Mauer and Morneau as the two best hitters in the American League, if not in all of baseball. There's no debate whatsoever as to who the best hitter in the game is. That would be Pujols. To argue otherwise is just to argue for the sake or arguing. There could be one hell of a debate for the second best hitter, though.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 01:33 PM) Exactly Maybe you should've said 'currently' the best hitter on the planet. Kinda like when Greinke was pitching better than anybody on the planet. But under no circumstance is he a better pitcher than Johan.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 01:24 PM) The Cubs pitched to Mauer with a runner on 2nd, 2 outs. He of course delivered an RBI single. I don't care how good Morneau is, you simply don't pitch to the best hitter on this planet. Did Albert Pujols retire?

2009 AL Central Thread
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 06:53 AM) Joe Mauer is clean. I'd bet my reputation, heart, and soul on that. He's just that good of a hitter. Other than Juan Rincon, I honestly can't think of another Twins player that has been busted for PED abuse. I'm sure I'm wrong, so bust me right now. Mauer won't stick at catcher his entire career (I hope not), because some franchise (hopefully Minnesota, probably someone else) would like to prolong his career somewhere. I still think Joe Mauer has a very, very long career waiting for him at 3B. If so, I don't think it's entirely unreasonably that Joe Mauer could reach 3000 hits, and perhaps even go to 3500 hits. I have not watched baseball very closely until about the past 3 years, but I have never seen a better hitter, other than maybe Pujols (who walks to much to get to 3500, and perhaps 3000 period). Mauer is an absolute monster. If the proposal came up, to trade all of the Sox minor leagues for Joe Mauer, yes, I would trade all of it for Joe Mauer. It's a travesty that no matter how clean a player appears to be you have to always wonder. I agree with pretty much everything you've said here. A lot of scouts seem to believe that Matt Wieters will be better than Joe Mauer. I hope I'm around to see that.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 02:35 AM) Tim Lincecum with a CG shutout vs Oakland. Oakland's another team that has enough young pitching to compete for a couple years. Assuming their upper tiers offensive prospects can figure it out. Can't forget about Tampa. And the Red Sox have become a prospect factory the last 3-4 years. I just hope in time that we can catch up to some of these teams.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 02:41 AM) we thought Mitchell K'd a lot... just checked the stats, and Parker K'd 71 times this year!!! I know you're obsessed with K's. But just check out the rest of his stat line. And try watching him this weekend if you get a chance. He's got 5 legitimate tools. A no doubt top-10 (at worse top-20) pick next season.

God f***ing damn this is some good s***! I take pride in eating really healthy 6 days a week. But on that one day I use to indulge (usually Friday or Saturday), I simply cannot control myself. Sex or Crazy Bread? I've got to think really hard on that one. I can easily down 5 or 6 of these (and I mean bags) on any given day. I like it lightly cooked (just above raw) with TONS of the butter and cheese smothered all over it. You don't even need the sauce. The s*** melts in your mouth and makes your nipples hard. I'm getting horny just thinking about it. I'll BRB.

Soxtalk Future Interview: Jared Mitchell
Most scouts believe that you're already a pretty good prospect. They also believe now that since you will be focusing 100% on baseball that you have a chance to become an elite prospect. How do you think focusing on just 1 sport now will enhance your game?

2009 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 12, 2009 -> 05:54 PM) How awesome is Baltimore's offense starting to look for the future? Wieters Markakis Jones Scott Reimold They need to get some pitching and infielders though. Trading Brian Roberts and Aubrey Huff for a young starter or two would be a good start. They've got more high-end pitching prospects than any team in baseball. I've been saying since the end of last season that teams better get their licks in now. Because come 2011 or 2012, they could be head and shoulders above the rest of the league. The Rangers are the other AL team, IMO, primed to dominate in 2-3 years.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jun 13, 2009 -> 01:04 AM) Look out for Joe Mauer gentelmen. He's only played alittle over a month, and has already tied his career high in homers. IMO.. this will be his career year which is hard to fathom because of his 06 numbers. He is just that good. He's a joy to watch. I just hope he's clean. The power surge has come outta nowhere.

White Sox Winnah
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 12, 2009 -> 02:13 AM) whoa whoa whoa... I never said bench Alexei or anything and there's no reason not to let him play for the rest of the year... All I'm saying is if he doesn't show some real good improvement by the end of the year, I'm wondering if it might be wisest putting Beckham at SS, and at the very least, Alexei could be a very solid utility guy. But he already has shown real good improvement. Or are you just going to ignore his numbers for the last month?

A MESSAGE TO THE SOXTALK COMMUNITY
QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 12, 2009 -> 02:08 AM) Say you had a movie theater. . . Certainly, anyone who is over 17 can see whatever movie that they wish. However, some movie-goers, choose to regularly bring young children into the theater or use their cellphones during the films and disrupt others who are trying to enjoy themselves. Certainly, they are allowed to bring the children and phones in, but those things have caused you to lose many good customers over time because of their noise and the lack of respect that they show. I wonder, would you advise people to turn off their phones and take their children to the lobby when they act up? It is your right as the theater owner to police your theater and decide who should be asked to leave. . .correct? I understand the analogy. And it's a pretty good analogy by the way. But as Tizzle stated earlier...are people that damn sensitive that they would let the negativity of a poster/posters effect them to the point that they would just stop posting? Isn't that what the ignore button is for? And if they see a thread where it's obvious that it's going to be a big cryfest, why enter it? I don't know. I've been posting here since 2003. I've seen this board at it's best and worst. But I've never thought to myself "I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE! I'M NEVER POSTING HERE AGAIN!"

Disappointment of the year
QUOTE (scenario @ Jun 12, 2009 -> 01:33 AM) Waaaaay too early to be voting for disappointments among the players listed in the poll. Come on people. This is early June. It's not at all unusual for minor league players to start out slow after they've been moved up a level. So season average stats for minor league players mean precisely squat at this time of year. Also... Gilmore was just named SAL offensive player of the week and has been on fire recently. Shelby has historically been a slow starter who comes on late... and he's hitting .375 with a .419 OBP over the last 14 days. And both Gilmore and Escobar are young for their league... in low A-ball. How is it logical to classify talented 20-year olds in low A-ball (the two youngest guys on their team) as disappointments?? Great post. If anything, the one guy I've been the most disappointed in is Viciedo. I knew he wasn't ready for the majors. But I expected him to flat rake in the minors. A BB/K ratio of 8/45 and .668 OPS was certainly not what I was expecting. That's not even touching on his defense (doesn't he have like 12 errors?). Don't get me wrong. I know he's 19 (or is he 20 now?). And I know he's adjusting to a brand new culture/environment. And I know we've still got another 3 months left in the minor league season, so he could obviously turn it around. I just expected better to this point.

A MESSAGE TO THE SOXTALK COMMUNITY
QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 12, 2009 -> 01:49 AM) The whole point of this thread is to not turn posters into Stepford Wives; it's to make people realize that their actions affect others and can have consequences. This is a board with membership that is by invitation only and it is a privilege to post here, not a right. If you are a poster who only shows up to Soxtalk and posts in game threads when the Sox lose. If you get more joy when you try to tell people "I told you so!", than when the Sox win. If your posts ramble, are nonsensical, and bring others down. If your discussions consist of posting things with no factual basis behind them, or things that show a lack of pre-post research on your part (i.e. talking out of your backside). If you lash out in insults when people try to correct you. If you do not have the ability to share insight and discussion in a civil manner here without getting upset and making a personal attack. You are the poster who we are trying to warn with this thread. Question about the bold. I get where you're coming from. But who is anybody to question or even care if a certain poster only shows up in loser threads, or is a certain poster gets joy from being right, even if them being right only hurts the team? That's something that shouldn't be policed, IMO. I agree 100% with the non-bolded.

A MESSAGE TO THE SOXTALK COMMUNITY
QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jun 12, 2009 -> 01:27 AM) You need another angle to this issue. You shouldn't be isolating negativity as if it's the culprit alone. Personal attacks, yes, I can understand. But if the team is performing terribly, what else is there to say? It's up to the Soxtalk team to know the difference between what should be allowed and what shouldn't. When you say we're trying to cut down on negativity, I become worried at the extent such a reform will be pursued. If I created a "White Sox loser" thread would it be immediately deleted, despite the fact "White Sox Winner" threads are allowed? I remember this was usually a contentious point in the past with people. WWWSID -- What Would White Sox Interactive Do. If you, or any of the other administrators/moderators find yourselves trying to enforce anything that resembles their policies towards negativity, you're doing it all wrong. Just remember guys, this is a fan website. Yes, it's not a cesspool for negativity; but lets not try to act as if we're trying to appease anyone by enforcing a whole host of negativity rules. This is what I believe took down WSI. Dave Wills began posting, the Red Eye referenced them, and then all of the sudden they acted as if their opinions mattered. Threads determined to be overly negative we're moved into their side forums. Hell, even those that weren't were still moved because they went against their personal beliefs. "If you don't believe the White Sox will make the playoffs in 2005 then dont bother posting" was a common idea I came across. It reminds me of the instance several years ago when Hawk (poorly) shouted out Soxtalk.com, and right after that there began this 'coincidental' desire to shape things up. I believe that's about the time the language filter came up. It makes me wonder why all the sudden things have changed. There's usually a reason just beyond "it's getting ridiculous in here." Really, I have no problem with trying to foster a good fan experience. Its just, when I come across these posts where people say "I cant post here sometimes because of (this) or (that)" it just sounds...so....ridiculous. Is anyone really that sensitive enough that they have their posting experience here on Soxtalk affected by whether or not there is a certain level of intelligent discussion or negativity? If anything, instead of purposely avoiding the website anyone who holds this opinion should stick around and try to change, first hand, what they feel needs improvement. I wanted to say something similar to this. But I was too lazy and didn't feel like putting forth the effort. I'm down 100% with eliminating personal attacks. That shouldn't be tolerated in any way shape or form. But I don't want this to turn into Sissytalk.com. I get annoyed with excessive whining/negativity as much as the next person. But people should be free to express their feelings/opinions without consequence . This board would get super boring and lame real quick if every poster was forced to turn into jphat (no offense at all to jphat. I think he's an outstanding poster). I like a good mix. You got your optimists (jphat, rowand44, SS2K5), you got your pessimists (tito, bigswert, fathom - except when it comes to the Cubs), and people like Dick Allen, who are kinda in between, at least IMO. I used to be super optimist when I first started out here. I wasn't jphat. But pretty close. I think I'm more in the middle now. And I think I'm a much better overall poster than I was when I was super optimist. I just want to see intelligent ideas/discussion/ect. That should be the goal for any message board.

White Sox Winnah
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 09:19 PM) Nice win, but... I've mentioned this before, but I'm getting pretty sick and tired of watching Alexei out there. I've been one of his biggest fans and backers the past 2 years, but this s*** is getting old. Since there's not much hope for the rest of the season, IMO, there's no point in not letting Alexei go out there everyday and try and prove something, but I'm getting to the point where I don't think he's good enough to be an everyday player. I would not be upset at all to see Beckham getting a lot of time at SS. Alexei can still be a very valuable utility guy who can play all 3 OF spots as well 2B, 3B, and SS with average or better D. However, I don't think Alexei can be counted on as an everyday player. He tries to hit home runs every AB, and he just doesn't seem to have much baseball IQ (he's a natural player, but he's a bonehead). What the hell are you talking about? Alexei went from 2nd in the ROY last year to "valuable utility" guy in just over two months? Alexei's line the last 30 days (113 at bats): .301/.358/.425/.783 Yeah, he started out like horses***. But he's been pretty good the last month. I have no idea where you're coming from.

2009 College Baseball
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 11, 2009 -> 02:01 PM) Question for everyone who doesn’t have a horse (college) in the World Series race. Are you now rooting for LSU, because of Jared Mitchell? Last year, I was definitely rooting for Georgia, because of Beckham, and I imagine I’ll be doing the same again this year. I just have that mentality where I want to see our kids succeed. You couldn't pay me to care if LSU wins or loses. Of course I'd like to see Mitchell do well now that he's a part of the organization. But that's as far as it goes for me. What's going to be super funny is the reaction by some if he goes 0/4 with 3 K's. "SEE! I TOLD YOU! HE f***ING SUCKS! WHAT A TERRIBLE DRAFT PICK!"
