  1. QUOTE(Felix @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 04:47 PM) I never said we overpaid. You stated that if we didn't sign Count up now and if he had another year like 2005, he would command a bunch of money in FA, so if we wanted to resign him when he was a FA, we would be forced to overpay similar to how we dealt with Paulie. And that's why I'm glad we got him signed now. I know some question whether he can repeat his '05 season. I'm not one of them. I'm more worried about Garland than Contreras.
  2. QUOTE(bmags @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 04:38 PM) I take issue with your first point, contreras had a tough month but his run support for the first half was absolutely terrible, i don't htink we scored more than three runs in a bunch of his starts and he kept getting no decisions, he threw a masterful game against the indians last year, left with a 5-2 lead, and shingo gave up 3 hrs in the ninth! His ERA was pretty damn good from april-may and much more deserving than his record showed. You're the man, bmags. I get so annoyed when people act like Jose didn't start pitching until July.
  3. Set your VCRs, folks. We might not ever see anything like this again.
  4. QUOTE(Felix @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 04:17 PM) None of that would matter though, since Brandon McCarthy would be filling in the rotation. With Paulie, there was no other option for the Sox at 1B, so we were forced into overspending for him. With Count however, we have other options (which also happen to be much cheaper), so letting him go into free agency if he repeated his '05 performance wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, and we wouldn't be pressed to overpay for him. But we didn't overpay. Overpaying is what the Yankees did with Pavano and Wright. Overpaying is what the Red Sox did with Clement. Overpaying is what the Blue Jays did with Burnett. Considering the current market, we got Jose at a bargain price.
  5. QUOTE(WCSox @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 04:12 PM) He was pretty bad in the '03 playoffs. And he was pretty good in the '05 playoffs.
  6. QUOTE(WCSox @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 11:01 AM) Not according to the non-homers who voted him 15th. If by homer you mean somebody who's not one of those fake, fickle, retards that can still apperciate a guy even though he's no longer with my team, then yeah, I'm a homer. LOL. So he sucked the last 74 games of the season and still managed to hit .328, 43, 143 and a 1.061 OPS? Try again. I know. It's called injuries. That has nothing to do with strength. Yeah, I'm sure Frank wouldn't have had any injuries the last 5 years if he was just 10 pounds lighter. Frank has been around 265-275 his whole career. Losing 20 pounds would not have prevented the injuries.
  7. QUOTE(FlaCWS @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 03:02 PM) I have a couple of issues with this deal: 1. God bless Contreras for what he did for us down the stretch, and in the playoffs, last year, but remember that the guy has had one good HALF season in the majors. He was absolutely awful with the Yankees, and barely mediocre from mid '04 to mid '05 with the Sox. 2. Contreras is listed at 34 years old but we all know El Duque had himself 4 years younger than he really was. If that's the common practice with the Cubans, then Contreras is 38. We just locked him up till age 42. Yikes. 3. Buerhle is only 27 and has had 5 good seaons with the Sox (as opposed to one half). He is the true ace (and face) of this team. I realize we have him locked up for 2 years, but he'll still be only 29 at that point. Why not lock him up long term now, instead of committing all that money to Contreras? This is assuming, of course, that Kenny hasn't been trying to do this all along. I hope he has. I'm not trying to be negative, just looking at the devil's advocate side of things. Contreras was the man for us last year, but to me he hasn't proved enough to warrant this extension. Just my two cents. Remember what happened when they waited with Konerko? They ended up paying a lot more money than they wanted to. Say they waited until the end of '06, and Jose has another '05 like season, do you realize how much money he would command? Look at what some of these other guys are making. And I disagree with the notion that Jose has had one good half in his 3 seasons. He was very good in '03. Inconsistent in '04. Stellar in '05. And not just in the second half. If you go check out his '05 game log, he really only had 3 or 4 rough starts leading up to the all-star break that jacked his era up over 4. He was very good through April, May and the first week or so of June. Considering what some of these other guys are making, some who are nowhere near the caliber or even as accomplished as Jose, I'd say we got him for a very reasonable price.
  8. I'm just gonna chill in my room with a two 40's and a sub.
  9. QUOTE(GoTribe @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 03:09 PM) Hi everyone. Should be a great game today. I wanted you all to win the World Series, but back to my old ways of wanting you to lose. Let's hope we each make the playoffs for some respect nationally. Nevertheless let's hope its not rained out and GO TRIBE! Welcome to the board. You guys have an outstanding team. This will be a fun year.
  10. Anybody here feel like a virgin on prom night? Or is it just me?
  11. Happy B-day to a great, great pitcher.
  12. I can't sleep. I'm too jacked up.
  13. He might not be the best pitcher...But there's nobody in baseball more reliable or consistent than Mr. Buehrle.
  14. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 12:33 AM) ^^. Will be interesting to see how he does moving from a pitcher's park in B-Ham to a hitters park in Charlotte, and how it affects his power numbers etc. Well, I won't be looking at his power numbers. BA/OBP/SB is what I'll be looking for.
  15. QUOTE(allupons @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 12:14 AM) I am a little suprised by the desire to trade contreras on these boards. In my opinion, he has without a doubt the best raw stuff of anyone on our starting staff. His only limitation had been the head games he played in his mind, but Coop righted the ship last year and now he is utulizing his vast potential. He was our ace when it came down to the playoffs last year and I predict will remain our ace for quite some time. I personally expect Garland to be the odd man out at the end of the year when he doesnt live up to last years performance, and makes room for BMac in the rotation. Welcome to the board.
  16. WTF are the Phillies thinking? They're not a team that can afford to trade away pitching for a back-up of.
  17. QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 10:36 PM) Someone stated that Jose Contreras was a perrenial Cy Young candidate. Since when? That was me. I worded it wrong. I meant to say we signed a guy that I believe will be a perrenial Cy Young canidate.
  18. QUOTE(iWiN4PreP @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 08:59 PM) any late help? i got to decide within next 2-4 hours I'd keep the two pitchers and drop Hunter. Like Jackie said, you can usually find guys in the waivers/free agent pool that can come close to giving you what Hunter does.
  19. I'm getting nervous as hell. Less than 21 hours to go.
  20. QUOTE(whitesoxfan99 @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 10:23 PM) Gotcha. I'm just referring to the fact that there have been several competitive games in this tourney that would hardly qualify as quality basketball games IMO such as Texas/LSU and Memphis/UCLA. There just seems to be very few games in this tourney where both teams played good basketball. That also was indicative of college basketball in general this year so it's not surprising. I'm an Illinois fan. Believe me, I know all about ugly basketball. lol. I just hope the game is competitive.
  21. QUOTE(whitesoxfan99 @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 10:15 PM) Maybe, but based on the quality of play thus far in the tourney I need to see it to believe it. You don't think Monday's game will be competitive? That's what I mean when I say it's gonna be a good one.
  22. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 09:33 PM) Florida-UCLA Championship. Where's zoom? I'm gonna have to eat a little crow as far as UCLA goes, too. I didn't think they were that good. I didn't think they were deep enough (I was wrong), or that they were experienced enough. We're in for a good one Monday.
  23. QUOTE(GoRowand33 @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 03:08 AM) I only got the music with no video Same here. Do you have to have a certain type of player?
  24. UCLA is raping LSU. I've NEVER seen a Pac-10 team defend like this Bruin team does.
