Hurricane Irene & the hurricane season
Having lived on the Outer Banks for five years before I went into the Coast Guard, I was around for many hurricane threats. Oddly enough, the only time I was there for a direct hit by a major hurricane was when I was visting my parents when Hurricane Isabel hit. It was pretty wild. The wind was blowing around 100 mph sustained for well over an hour. I talked to my parents last night, and they're not leaving (very few residents actually leave, mainly because it's very difficult to get back). Their house is about 3/4 mile from the ocean, so there's no real threat of water from the ocean. Wind damage and flying debris are the main concerns. It's funny to watch the newscasters and weathermen who travel to the places where a hurricane is supposed to hit. They're out on the beach two days ahead of time while behind them people are sunbathing and fishing. During Hurricane Isabel, one of the local restaurants put on their marquee "Jim Cantore - Emmy for Best Drama". Remember he was the one who flipped out during the lightning strikes in the blizzard. I'm not trying to downplay the severity of the hurricane. There will be a lot of damage. I don't know if it's the same in other hurricane -prone areas, but residents of the Outer Banks take precautions, then they sit tight and ride it out. Their mentality is whatever will happen will happen.

Peavy with an eye on '12
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 25, 2011 -> 12:57 PM) That's exactly what I thought. It's going to be a sickening offseason with Sox fans being asked to believe Peavy and Dunn will magically be great again and Rios will work so hard in the offseason. I believe Dunn will improve dramatically (.230 with 30 HRs would be dramatic), Rios will be better (but still not great), and Peavy will be the same. Dunn's poor performance is baffling and so sudden that one has to believe he will rebound. Peavy's poor performance is due in large part to injuries. I don't see him being anything special again.

Sox Did Not Put in a claim on Kubel or Thome
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 25, 2011 -> 02:56 PM) scotgregor Scot Gregor GM Kenny Williams on reports #WhiteSox awarded waiver claim on Kubel: "Kubel? Do you know something I don't know?" KW's denials mean nothing. However, I doubt it matters. Too much info out there saying even if there was a waiver claim, nothing will come of it.

Indians awarded claim on Thome
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:03 PM) Some of you guys are starting to portray Cub-like delusional optimism. I just don't seen anything about this team that exudes "Championship caliber". I agree there hasn't been anything about this team that made me think of them as championship caliber. But, I'm going to still watch the games, cheer when they win, b**** when they lose. I honestly think it'll take at least a moderate collapse by Detroit for the Sox to have a chance. As far as claiming Thome, I don't have a problem with it...for the Sox. But Thome could definitely be put to better use on another team...one that has a much better chance of reaching the post season.

Indians awarded claim on Thome
That would be interesting. If nothing else it would keep Thome from going to the Indians. I wonder if any deal would be struck.

Would You Sign Danks to the "Weaver" Deal?
So, if Weaver signed a "hometown discount" (and I would agree he did), Danks signing a hometown discount here would have to be less than $15 million/year...maybe even a little as $12 million. In my mind, he's worth $13 to $15 million tops and maybe 3-4 years. I don't see him signing for little as the Sox would be willing to pay. Trading him this offseason would probably be the way to go.

Lillibridge performing like Jeff Leifer
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 22, 2011 -> 03:23 PM) I think it's pretty easy to understand Lilly's power surge. He STILL has a home run mentality in a skinny lil body. He is trying to pop home runs every time he bats and to his credit, he does have a home run swing. Unlike Dunn, he connects once in a while and with that big bat and uppercut swing ... home run. Darndest thing I've ever seen, a skinny guy like that with a better home run stroke than a big guy like Dunn. I wouldn't say he's trying to hit a HR every at bat. I think he's trying to hit the ball hard, and that's a different Lillibridge than we've seen before. His swing is faster, and I would agree that he does have a bit of an uppercut swing. Dunn's swing seems so slow to me. Of course when you're as big as he is you don't have to rely as much on bat speed. However, making contact with the ball is important.

Would You Sign Danks to the "Weaver" Deal?
I can't see a 5 year deal for any pitcher coming from the Sox. Plus, I'm not certain he's worth $17 million a year. He's most likely got plenty of good years ahead of him. I could see the Sox offering 3/$45 or maybe 4/$60, but that would be a stretch. If they're not going to pay him at least $15 million/year, they'd be better off trading him for a load of prospects.

Who will finish with more bombs?
Just messing with some stats here... If Lillibridge had gotten the same number of ABs as Dunn so far, he would have hit 25 HRs. That's not taking into account Lillibomb's ability to be an everyday player, but it really is a statement of how bad Dunn has been. I voted Dunn earlier and estimated 18 for Dunn and 12 for Lillibridge. Now I'm thinking they might actually end up tied, somewhere around 15.

Humber Placed on DL
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 02:06 PM) Anyone still think we win this division? Aside from Greg Hibbard? I didn't think we could win this division even before this happened. I don't think this is necessarily the proverbial nail in the coffin, but the hammer has been picked up.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 10:45 AM) 'American Horror Story', coming to FX, looks boss. The teasers are very strange. But, from what I've read about it, I think I'll like it. What is it with FX and their marketing?

AJP to DL w/ fractured wrist
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 10:58 AM) I'm not going to lie, keep him out a few more days, Flowers has been giving some unreal at bats to this team. His swing has been cut down considerably from what it was and he is flat out seeing the ball well. Flowers has looked pretty good at the plate. Considering how poorly he's hit in AAA, it's a nice surprise. No telling it will last, but keeping him in there is the only way to find out.

AJP to DL w/ fractured wrist
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 08:45 AM) That's awesome. The stache returns. Didn't he shave or at least severely trim the stache? See what happens? Grow a bushy mustache, break your wrist. Good thing he didn't go all Brian Bruney. He'd have shattered his shoulder.

Humber takes line drive to head, removed from game
That was scary. His knees buckled and he just fell backwards. He looked a little dazed when he first stood up, but when he was taking to Herm he looked better. They made the right decision by pulling him.

8/18 Game Thread: Indians @ White Sox, 7:10pm CT
Dunn goes deep tonight. De Aza gets two hits. Rios goes 1-3 with a sac fly Humber labors but does okay. 6 IP, 7 hits, 3 ER Sox eek out a win 5-4

8/18 Game Thread: Indians @ White Sox, 7:10pm CT
Winning this series will be huge. Losing the series will be evn more huge. This is a team the Sox have to beat. They can't win against teams other than Cleveland and Detroit and then hope other teams beat up on Cleveland and Detroit. The bats need to wake up again. Humber needs to step it up and return to his earlier form.

El Duque to retire
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 17, 2011 -> 08:04 AM) Although that writer didn't note them...this entire fanbase remembers him for 3 outs. One of the best pressure-pitching performances ever.

AJP to DL w/ fractured wrist
It's too bad. AJ has been hitting well. But, it'll be a huge test for Flowers. I'm pretty sure this is AJ's first trip to the DL. Figure everything he's been through, and he goes to the DL after getting hit by Bruce Chen. Wow.

This season is a statement on organizational resiliency
I'll agree with one thing: Thank god we're not the Cubs. It seems llike every year something's going on over there with Zambrano that just makes you shake your head. They did the right thing, though, by placing him of the DQ list.

Sale to Start Next Year?
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2011 -> 08:33 AM) If Sale is a starter, that probably means Buehrle isn't back. Or Danks. Danks would be cheaper...at least for next year. But there is that loyalty between the Sox and Buehrle. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.
