Home s*** Home
Professional atheletes have to know getting into it that they will be scrutinized much greater than just some guy working at a desk somewhere. I think we can all agree that these guys are not robots and they have feelings. And, okay, a player's feelings can be hurt by 25,000 people booing when he's not performing like his $12 million paycheck would suggest. I can even say that the fans booing could be a very minute factor in poor play...for a player or two, but not for the whole team. Does Konerko go up to bat and think, "I don't think I can hit today because the fans booed Adam!"

Home s*** Home
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 01:37 PM) But they didn't start booing until June. So you're telling me the team just sucked for some mysterious reason in April and May, was about to completely turn things around but the fans stopped that from occurring because they started to occasionally boo? I'm with you on this argument. I will agree that a player like Dunn might be affected by the boos after his third strikeout, and he probably feels a lot of pressure to start performing. But an entire team plays poorly because they got booed yesterday or might get booed today? If people I worked with told me I suck, I'd probably take offense, but my performance wouldn't change for the worse. However, if my boss told me I suck, my performance would most likely change...for the better. Maybe the players' bosses need to do that. Maybe that'll get Dunn out of his slump. However, maybe that did work for Rios (finally)...we'll have to wait and see.

Home s*** Home
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 01:29 PM) I wonder why AJ isn't hitless on the road since they boo him in every at bat wherever he goes. I think he's used to and probably enjoys the boos he gets from all the away parks he plays in. Remember how much we hated him when he played for the Twins? He's an ass, but he's currently our ass.

Home s*** Home
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 11:35 AM) Well we do need to remember they are human beings. And I do think some players are more sensitive to it than others. I think it's fairly clear that athletes do enjoy being supported and inspired by the fans. And I wouldn't doubt if many of them do have a desire to please the fans. So I would not be shocked if Adam Dunn feels more pressure in front of the home crowd to perform well. I would not be shocked if that causes him to press. It's human nature, regardless of what their paycheck says at the end of the week. I just don't think that the disparity between the home and road performance can really be blamed on the fans. Very slightly influenced, perhaps, but not a materially significant cause. I agree that Adam Dunn probably feels a ton of pressure to play well at home. But to say the team as a whole plays worse at home because of booing (when something bad happens) is extreme.

Happy Birthday pittshoganerkoff!!
Thanks, guys!

This conversation is humorous. The players are grown men, playing a game, making millions of dollars. And the fans booing when they strike out or give up a bunch of runs is going to make them play worse next time? Give me a break.

Oney versus Valentine
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 09:30 AM) Is Oney 13? Seriously. "Stop picking on my dad, you big meanie!"

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 08:12 AM) I don't know what I feel better about in this series... Seeing Rios starting to hit the ball hard, or seeing Jakes second start in a row of being strong up over 100 pitches? Both are so huge for this franchise moving forward. I wonder if something just clicked for Rios or did he decide to start trying again...or were the last two games just a fluke?

some youth to work with
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 08:13 AM) This is a franchise that hasn't had a winning season since Barry Bonds was skinny. If they missed their window, they might as well move the team. The Pirates are a unique franchise. They still have good attendance (for the team they roll out every year), yet they are almost always essentially eliminated by the middle of July. I think having a winning (or even .500) season would be a huge step for them. I am surprised they didn't make more of a splash at the deadline, though. If their owners and GM are smart, they'll continue to build their youth while mixing in some impact veterans.

2011 White Sox Catch-All Thread
What is this team? Sweep Boston in Boston but lose 2 of 3 at home. Split with the Yankees in NY but get swept at home. Then go into Minnesota and sweep the Twins? Aside from seemingly playing better away, I don't know what to think. This weekend has gotten me a little more excited about White Sox baseball, but we've seen this before. Get close to or to .500 then lose 3 in a row. Getting over .500 will make me feel better.

9 games that got away
QUOTE (JoshPR @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 02:28 PM) I'll say Kenny has been fortunate, that he hasn't been burned on trades. I think one of the worst was the swisher deal Yes, that wasn't a good one. The one that sticks in my head is the Todd Ritchie deal...although I remember someone saying that was someone else's doing.

9 games that got away
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 02:13 PM) Letting Ozzie Guillen live off of 2005 and keep his job for this long would have to be one of them. Well, that's gotta count for a couple there.

9 games that got away
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 5, 2011 -> 01:25 PM) I want to see a list of the 9 moves that got away, moves that helped KW ruin the franchise. I don't think there were nine moves that "ruined" the franchise. Honestly, There's only a handful of trades/signings I can think of that were really bad. And don't start squawking about the Dunn signing. No one, not even Adam Dunn, could have seen what's going on now. Most of the "bad" moves look bad because of hindsight, at least in my opinion. Ozzie makes bad in-game decisions, and that's what this thread was started about.

2011 White Sox Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 01:48 PM) Well, they're going to win 75 games with a 127 mil payroll this year. Cleveland and KC are coming on organizationally. The Twins always have a consistent approach and it works for them when they don't have injuries up the yingyang like this year. They may finish under .500 for a few years no matter what they do. At the very least, they can make some solid organizational decisions that will pay dividends the second half of this decade. Which is what they really need to do. I truly wonder what KW can do, however, with the number of bad contracts the Sox have. Ridding the team of Rios would be a huge step. Even if the Sox had to pay 50%+ of his remaining salary.

2011 White Sox Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 01:38 PM) Change may be imminent, but seriously, we are not playing with the house's money any more like we were after 2005. This team could be in for a long long rebuilding road. This season may be our best season in a long time.I don't think any White Sox fans are ready for that pain. Let's say we have 4-6 straight seasons of sub .500 baseball. Ugh. I'm just saying the change you want may result in a way worse pitching staff. Coupled with our rich underachieving offense that may result in us being the worst team in baseball for a long time. I know what you're getting at here, but this season is not good. I'd rather see a young team full of guys trying hard than the crap I'm seeing now. On a side note, I never thought the team would be this bad without Konerko. It's amazing to me how different the team seems without him.

FUN BAD ?!?!?
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 09:40 AM) I enjoyed a very entertaining episode of Leverage once I saw the score in the 3rd inning. I went downstairs and ended up watching Spongebob with my son.

Are you in or out?
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 3, 2011 -> 11:22 PM) That is a bright spot. It is ova officially finally. Unfortunately (or fortunately, I don't even know anymore) it's not over. And it won't be over, mathematically, for quite a while. We know it's over, but we're going to hear the clips and buzzwords soon. "The team needs to go on a run", "The tools are there", "Loaded with talent", etc. It's going to be a long painful ride to elimination. Even up until the beginning of this series I had a glimmer of hope that the team could fight its way to the top (with some help from the other bad teams in the division), but I just don't see it now.

Who's Worse?
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 2, 2011 -> 07:44 PM) You Ozzie haters act like the whole city is in your corner. If Ozzie walked into a restaurant later tonight, the place would be buzzing. People love Ozzie Guillen as they should. He is one of a kind IMO. Sigh. If Ozzie walked into a restaurant, he wouldn't be managing a team. He'd be eating dinner or having a beer. I'd talk to him, probably even ask for his autograph. I just don't want him managing the White Sox anymore!

A response....
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 3, 2011 -> 02:01 PM) I'm missing something here. Somebody blasted me for telling Mrs. Teahen she looked good instead of the way Oney described her. Then somebody said looks had nothing to do with it even though most of her post was about looks. She thanked me for the compliment in one of her ensuing posts. What am I missing here? Where did I become evil again? Kill this post if it takes the thread in a weird direction but what is goin on ? I think the point was that her response was not her saying, "I'm not ugly" but rather, "It's insulting to have someone associated with my husband's former team saying I'm ugly." I don't think Mrs. Teahen needs 45 guys on SoxTalk to says she's attractive. It's obvious enough that she is. She's not looking for reassurance regarding her looks. She's saying what most of us were already saying. Oney Guillen is a childish moron who needs to think twice before posting stuff about a player's wife. Why wouldn't Oney say something about Mark? It's like when we were kids saying crap about each other's mothers. But we were kids...Oney is not.
