QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Feb 23, 2010 -> 11:08 PM) They don't he will be playing vs lefties only /teal If Jones really breaks out, I wouldn't be surprised to see him getting more and more at-bats, even against righties. Especially if Kotsay struggles...

What I find interesting is all the talk before the winter about El Nino. Some of an El Nino pattern certainly is evident with wild weather in the east. But, many predicted a winter with above average temperatures and below average precipitation here in the midwest. Well, we've had over 50" of snow (for the 3rd winter in a row!), and it has not been very warm at all. Granted we haven't had any long frigid outbreaks, but it has been steadily cold all winter. The snow hurricane sounds wild. I was living on the Outer Banks of NC in 1989 when a similar storm hit right before Christmas. It was probably one of the only (if not THE only) white Christmas ever there.

vs. LH pitcher Pierre - LF Beckham - 2B Quentin - RF Konerko - 1B Jones - DH AJ - C Rios - CF Teahan - 3B Ramirez - SS vs. RH pitcher Pierre - LF Beckham - 2B Quentin - RF Konerko - 1B AJ - C Rios - CF Teahan - 3B Kotsay - DH Ramirez - SS Wow. Looking at this, I realized that we're lacking that definitive 5th batter. I'm not sure about Jones or AJ in that spot. I'm a little depressed all of the sudden.

Gordon Beckham: Player of the Decade and future HOFer
hogan873 replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (since56 @ Feb 21, 2010 -> 08:39 AM) Wow! Annointing him a hall of famer at this point amazes me. I remember some talking head once saying Mark Prior would be the next 300 game winner. I hope Beckham can adjust to 2nd base, has a solid year and doesn't get caught reading his own accolades. I'm not positive, but you may have broken the law of physics by using Mark Prior and Gordon Beckham in the same paragraph. I'm sure if you tried to put them in the same sentence your computer would implode. -
I've got a security system that allows for "away" and "stay" settings. It hasn't been tested yet (thankfully).

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 23, 2010 -> 12:23 PM) Ideally he would bat 2nd and then come back as the DH, hitting 5th. Of course he would have to throw on a fake mustache or something when DHing. Then he could just put "Gordon" on the back of his jersey. No one would question it because it is a last name.

Damon: "I want to finish my career as a Tiger."
hogan873 replied to scenario's topic in The Diamond Club
Something tells me that he would have spewed similar BS if he had signed with the Sox or even the Braves. -
Maybe it's the fact that this winter has seemed ungodly long and the additional fact that the Bears sucked, but I'm looking more forward to this baseball season than in the past. I'm willing the snow away so I can go out and start playing catch with my kids.

QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Feb 22, 2010 -> 01:50 PM) A DH with 25 homers, a .214 avg. and a .323 OBP is a bad DH. Yeah, that's just plain bad. Getting on base is extremely important, especially when you're talking about using a DH low in the lineup. A Jones/Kotsay cocktail is not the same as having a Thome or Blalock. If our DH is going to be batting 8th or 9th, the ability for said DH to get on base and move others on base is paramount.

The deafening silence since Saturday leads me to think that the Sox are standing pat. I'm frustrated, especially after KW apparently went aggresively after Damon. I thought maybe the hole at DH was recognized. Anyway, moving on, I am anxious to see how Jones does. If he returns to form, he could be a good pick-up. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but I have a feeling KW will have to be wheeling and dealing towards the trade deadline.

Is it just me or did that pic of Freddy look like he's slimmed down a bit...at least in the face?
-
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Feb 20, 2010 -> 05:40 PM) They should call Dye and/or Blalock. They will likely stand pat though, and be forced to give up whatever is left on the farm for a legitimate bat come July. Which would be a shame when there are legitimate bats available right now.
-
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Feb 20, 2010 -> 05:37 PM) You don't think Dye is half as good as Damon? Dye has much better power than Damon, and power is what he lack and need out of our DH. Damon's speed would have been nice, but I think $4M is fair for Dye. I see your point, and I wouldn't start throwing things if it happened. Maybe it's the attitude that JD has been displaying for a while that makes me lower the dollar value. But half of the Damon offer would be $3 million.
-
QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Feb 20, 2010 -> 05:35 PM) Isnt it Blalock? Yeah, but I don't care how the hell anyone spells it as long as it's on the back of a Sox jersey.
-
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Feb 20, 2010 -> 05:31 PM) Jermaine Dye , $4M. I have no problem with this except for the $. If he agrees to be the primary DH, sign him for $2 or $3 million.
-
Although part of me believes they will stand pat, I think KW has recognized the need for a true DH. I wouldn't be surprised if he makes a move towards Blalock.

QUOTE (Real @ Feb 20, 2010 -> 09:58 AM) http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4929220 Rumors on ESPN DET board are it's a 1yr/6m deal. Haha Isn't this the same deal the Sox offered? And even though the offer was "pulled", I would assume he'd still be welcome if he wanted to sign?
-
If the Sox do sign Damon, is there a chance the deal includes an option for 2011, or will he be strictly viewed as a stop-gap?
-
No matter where he signs, he's probably right now kicking himself (or his agent) right in the ass for not taking the 2/$14 million the Yankees offered.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 19, 2010 -> 02:42 PM) Joliet Central? Yeah...actually it's Central and West until 2012 (I think) when West will be the Tigers again.
-
QUOTE (PlunketChris @ Feb 19, 2010 -> 02:19 PM) why didn't we start a pool on when/where he'll sign. It was spoken of and then it never happened. I'm a little disappointed. He'll sign with the Sox on February 20, 2015. Kenny will finally get his man.

Wow. I was away from my computer for an hour and I miss a fight, screaming, yelling, punching... No news, though? It doesn't help that it's Friday and I can't concentrate on work as it is.
-
QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 19, 2010 -> 08:03 AM) As I recall Damon was really good friends with some of the Patriot players from his days in Boston. Maybe he told some of them and this scout talked to them. OK, it's reaching but it's a really boring Friday here. You never know. If the same thing had been "leaked" but with the Tigers mentioned there might be more of us speaking up. I think right now it's quiet optimism...or praying.
-
When I have the stomach flu, which is not often, about the only thing I can eat is saltines. There's something about the buttery, saltiness that makes me feel better.
-
You factor in KW's cryptic comment and this mystery scout saying the deal is all but done and you almost have to think it's possible. KW is famous for his no comment attitude, and his saying he'll discuss it on Sunday probably means we will already know one way or the other by then. Then there's the scout...it's almost laughably believable. If nothing else it'll make for an interesting Friday.
