QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 1, 2009 -> 05:34 PM) We're a team who's 1 season away from needing a LH DH. Mcpherson is gonna be 29 this season. Reclamation projects do not happen at 28 on average. His chances of being anything more than a bench player from this point on... are... well... just not likely. Going into a season with him as the dh would be far worse than wise in center ever could be. Our left handed bat can be found via free agency. If dye is anywhere close to his numbers last season, this season, there is no doubt in my mind he will be back. The market for outfielders is not exactly thin next year, which would give us the option of making dye the dh, as he has been one of the very worst fielders in the league for several years now.

He is worse than fields defensively.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Apr 1, 2009 -> 03:25 PM) He is better than Wise, but he is NOT the solution. He'd be worse defensively in CF, and for Ozzie Guillen, that's a big no-no. Reggie Willits or Gregor Blanco provide a much better option if you're looking for an upgrade that you wouldn't have to give up a big time prospect for. You cannot say that with a straight face that you think ozzie believes that. Also, i think it is just about time to give up on blanco, he is not going anywhere in the immediate future, nothing really suggests that much.

Pretty good pace already.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 31, 2009 -> 06:03 PM) Me and whitesoxfan101 were talking via Facebook about Konerko's SBs last year and the hilarity that ensued. How the hell did that happen? ''Brandon Phillips followed with a single -- and then produced a rare sight. With the left-handed Adam Dunn up, the Nationals employed a shift that put three infielders on the right side, with third baseman Ryan Zimmerman essentially playing shortstop. Phillips stole second and, when Schneider didn't attempt to throw him out, rounded the bag and headed for third without breaking stride.''

Dewayne Wise Named Full-time Starting CF/Leadoff hitter

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 31, 2009 -> 05:59 PM) And this is what sparked my now infamous "Either be content with Jerry Owens or find another damn team to root for" statement. I knew this was coming. Content- ''satisfied with what one is or has; not wanting more or anything else''. I do not believe i need to find another team because i do not meet those standards. Ludicrous. -
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Mar 31, 2009 -> 05:36 PM) If D-Wheezey had been up he would of hit a grand slam, and stole two bases at the same time. Instead, we lost. Great move, Ozzie. Brandon phillips actually stole two bases in the same play without a throw from the catcher in 2007.

Dewayne Wise Named Full-time Starting CF/Leadoff hitter

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 31, 2009 -> 01:55 PM) All I do know is that it's his job to find competent players to fill the major roles on this club and plugging Dewayne f***ing Wise into an incredibly important role like leadoff hitter/centerfield (THE #1 DEFENSIVE POSITION ON THE FIELD) is a complete and utter failure. I am not doubting you... i just have seen nothing to suggest center is more important than shortstop (gonna exclude catcher as that is a given). I am currently going back and reading every defensive saber related article i have... plus searching for many more... and i come up with nothing. Inform me... as this has to be a recent school of thought. -

QUOTE (ptatc @ Mar 31, 2009 -> 11:18 AM) Lamar Hoyt was pretty big when he won the Cy Young for the Sox. He was anywhere from 50 to 70 pounds lighter than sabathia. The big differential is due to their height difference, hoyt is 6'1 compared to sabathia who is 6'7. -
I predict greg775 and elrockinMT gloat about how foolish the sox were for ''letting'' crede go when he gets his first hit for the twins. I know the saying is there is no such thing as a sure bet... but...

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 31, 2009 -> 07:47 AM) Gonzales in the Trib said again the job is Miller's, and yet Ozzie said recently it was still a competition, and Lucy is still in major league camp. Not sure if this is just for coverage, or to get an extended look at Lucy, or what. But I am still clinging to that slim hope that they'll carry Lucy instead of Miller. I truly do not know who it will be to replace miller... but there is a very limited chance he sticks the entire season. Both miller and lucy are garbage, lucky to even be considered fodder at this point.. Lucy has a career .258 average to go along with a .683/.684 ops is 337 games. Lucy is also 26, has a bum knee, and he has played a grand total of 39 games above double a.

I recommend reading all six parts to anyone... but parts five and six touch on the size of a pitcher most importantly. 5 6 -

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Mar 31, 2009 -> 07:10 AM) Yeah, CC Sabathia is a joke I was truly trying to hold back, but you made me. The heaviest cy young winner in history... by a decent margain too.. Only the second fastest in major league baseball history to record 100 saves (187 games) to kaz sasaki (160 games). -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Mar 31, 2009 -> 02:15 AM) Good post Tommy. That answers my question. Mac I'm sure will be on a short leash. He is not one of Oz's past favorites. One or two horrific outings out of the gate might be it for him. p.s. Did Boone Logan make a roster this spring? I disliked him equally. Ya, logan is the first lefty out of the pen.

Dewayne Wise Named Full-time Starting CF/Leadoff hitter
qwerty replied to Kalapse's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Wise is gonna get exposed rather quickly. Bad players have gone on to have a decent/magical season throughout the history of the game, though the list is rather minimal. I wish wise produces, but when he doesn't, it will be a blessing in disguise (in the eyes of the organization, not the fans). Given the proper playing time (which the sox will be forced into... whether they like it or not... as i said wise will be exposed quickly) it will be hard for anderson to not to outproduce wise. The reason sox do not want to ''rush'' getz into the leadoff spot has to be because of his career .261 average and.696 ops in that role in 716 at-bats. In the two hole he hit .332 with a ops of .835 in 361 at-bats. I am extremely confident in him because of the level of his swing, and his eye has been above average every at every stop. The strike zone can be taught... but it is easily one of the last things to be fully acknowledged, and the vast majority still never get a true understanding. Getz has an ability literally no one else of the roster possesses. Getz will likely be leading off right around a month into the season... while wise tries his damndest to lose his job entirely. -
QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Mar 30, 2009 -> 04:07 PM) I would not be surprised if Fields is the Sox' second-best hitter this year. The sox will be in big trouble if that were to be the case.

QUOTE (knightni @ Mar 28, 2009 -> 07:28 PM) He can't play CF, right? 192 games in right. 149 games in left. 136 games in center. He is a defensive liability no matter where you put him.

My likes are your dislikes. My dislikes are your likes. So it is entirely possible who you like i would not like and vice versa. The same goes for dotel liking cabrera and whoever (likely more than just one person) had a problem with cabrera. No matter how bad someone does not like cowley, i'm sure they would even be able to admit everything throughout the season was not entirely made up. How i see it is, behind every rumor there is at least a shred of truth. Renteria's service time is 11.48 years. Cabrera's service time is 9.7 years. Renteria is on his sixth team. Cabrera is on his fifth team.

White Sox vs Arizona 3-26 spring game

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 26, 2009 -> 03:54 PM) That's only if you choose to acknowledge his -12 OPS+ since 2004. His 37% CS% led me to believe that he can throw a little. He can throw, there is no doubt, he also calls a very solid game. That is the only reason he ever got a chance, was not his overwhelming offensive talent. Supposedly he has 90 stolen bases against in the minors and threw out 53, good for 37% like you said. In the majors he is at 33%, 38 stolen bases against to the 19 he threw out. I wish caught stealing percentage numbers were kept track of in the minors better. I really want to know where baseball cube (boy are they unreliable many times) got corky's 43 % cs% in 2004. They credit him with 35 caught stealing in 81 attempts... get this... for the cincinnati reds. That might be possible if not for him only playing 12 games in the majors that particular season. They could have possibly meant those numbers for the minors, but he only caught 54 games that season in triple a, which would just be a god damn ridiculous rate for the staff to get run on... especially if he was throwing them out at the rate baseball cube claims. I am just leary of any minor league cs# numbers, that is all. -
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 26, 2009 -> 03:20 PM) Wow Qwerty, I'm impressed by your knowledge base on all that Stooge history, by your uncle's passion and collection, and by your continued devotion to the old comedy shorts. I still definitely love them as well. ''Hold hands, you lovebirds''. Classic! That's actually inscribed on Emil Sitka's tombstone. And the story is that short was one that slipped into the public domain and was shown on TV so much that's why ''Hold hands, you lovebirds'' became the catchphase he was best known for. Sitka, of course, was the official 7th Stooge. He was asked to join the team in 1974, and then Moe died in 1975 before they filmed anything together. Seeing Shemp and Besser together onscreen is neat, and I'm sure it was tough for Besser to replace his good friend in the Stooges lineup. The Curly cameos question is a good one, and I think I know the answer. I think they actually recycled the Hold That Lion footage and used it in one of the later shorts - not sure which one. Budget cuts had forced them to reuse a lot of older stock shots by the mid 50s, and i know that's how they handled the "Fake Shemp" Palma stuff - reusing Shemp footage as much as they can and finishing it off with new shots of the back of Palma's head and such. You are correct that they recycled the second half of ''hold that lion!'' which and made ''booty and the beast'' with it. But that is not what i was looking for. Curly would visit the set whenever he felt well enough to make it, one day it just so happened he was on one of his ''up'' days when he walked onto to the set in 1950 of spooks! 3-d. In spooks 3-d (released 1953) the stooges encounter a bat that looks like shemp, the bat gives off a ''woowoowoowoowoo''. Some think it was shemp who voiced it, but moe confirmed the contrary in his autobiography. Curly did indeed voiced it right then and there, they did not use a stock woowoowoowoowoo. Was kinda a trick question since it was a voice over cameo... but it is a cameo nonetheless. Now every time i see that short i look out for that bat, as it is the very last piece of curly to ever make the screen.
