  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 27, 2009 -> 11:14 AM) This of course gets to the heart of the problem. Neither group of people really wants to spend the money on this. The broadcasters don't necessarily want to spend major amounts of money upgrading their signals right now, and consumers don't necessarily want to go buy additional converter equipment. And even if you get past that, it's likely that some people just won't get the signal after the transition that they got beforehand. Unfortunately, that's why there's a big, bully government out there, to hopefully force people to make decisions they don't want to make if it is actually going to be for the good of the country overall. So, since neither group wants to spend the money and the date is getting pushed out, guess who gets to pay for that? Government and the Industry, which means us because we pay for the government and also us because we are consumers for the industry. PBS itself will take a $22 Million hit
  2. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 02:50 PM) Am I the only one that doesn't like shopping online simply because I like to get the X months w/no interest from the store instead? You're not the only one. For big purchases, I do all kinds of research online. Then, go around to the different stores in the area and compare prices. I've found that it was pretty easy to get any of the stores in the area to do price matching on top of that too. I also just like having a physical store that I can go to immediately if there are any problems at all.

    Winter Car Trouble

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 16, 2009 -> 02:18 PM) oh, and is it weird that right after the guy installed the new battery, it turned on, but then hours later it wouldn't? like... why the hell did it turn on the first time?? lol If the alternator is bad, then it started up on the fresh new battery. Then, while it was running it pulled from that battery instead of from the alternator. So, the next time you tried to turn it on, there was nothing left. Also, with a bad alternator, you never charge your battery back up. I'm pretty sure that's the way it works, but I am no mechanic. I just mess around with an old truck that I am very slowly rebuilding.

    My computer

QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 11, 2009 -> 03:30 PM) So re-install Vista? That seems to be the answer I am getting everywhere I look. Yep, just like was stated, wipe it clean and see what happens. IMO, it sounds like a RAM issue, but you might as well see if there is a software issue causing it.
  5. I'm one of the few people that drove into work today. Really was not all that bad, but the road conditions are still listed as "travel is not advisable".
  6. Awesome! Never seen him play, but love what I have heard so far.
  7. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 20, 2008 -> 05:49 PM) Exactly. For the long term investor, this is a buying opportunity that will pay off later. Its really just the people who are about to retire that are in the biggest trouble, as far as stock prices go. I think of it in the way that I am paying the same amount of money with each paycheck. So, right now, I am picking up a lot more stock for a cheap price than if everything was still sky-high. My $100 picks up 50 shares at the current price instead of the 25 it was before. When it does go back up in value, I will have a lot more shares going up in value.
  8. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 09:27 AM) Ah thanks. So steer clear of the 40gb? Depends on how techie you are. It is really easy to upgrade the hard drive on these things (I think it is even in the manual). I currently have a 40 GB with the thought in mind that I would upgrade it if I ran out of space. I've only had my PS3 for a few months and don't think I am anywhere near the 40 GB, but I haven't downloaded a bunch of stuff on to it. You just basically need any notebook hard drive and you can throw it in there. Right now you can get a 320GB hard drive off of NewEgg for $75.
  9. I don't want to see a blame game at all. I just want to see some working towards solutions.
  10. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 09:24 PM) Criticism The organization has been criticized for advancing a notion of objectivity thought to be ideologically consistent with the values of liberal democracy. Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky argue that the CMPA is organized around the creation of "flak," which they define as "negative responses to a media statement or program" and which they maintain is part of a project of "disciplining the media." [17] The media watchdog group Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) has challenged CMPA's non-partisan claim, based on the argument that much of its funding has come from conservative sources, and that its founder, Dr. S. Robert Lichter, once held a chair in mass communications at the American Enterprise Institute and was a Fox News contributor.[18][19] After a Washington Post article referred to CMPA as "conservative," the Post published a "Clarification," which concluded, "The Center describes itself as nonpartisan, and its studies have been cited by both conservative and liberal commentators."[20] Interesting, and that is one of the reasons why I put the story out here. Where did you get that information from on the CMPA and FAIR? I had never heard of either of them before this.
  11. Here is a new study that was just put out by the Center for Media and Public Affairs. It seems to add nicely to this thread. Its finding was that the media coverage has favored Obama. AP News Story
  12. QUOTE (Chet Lemon @ Oct 24, 2008 -> 04:36 PM) But the question was clearly asking if Reagan won every state except for MN. DC is not a state, therefore Reagan won every state except the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Yep, which is why I called it a place, not a state. I just thought the map was interesting, and it seemed a little weird that DC of all places went that way as well.
  13. QUOTE (Chet Lemon @ Oct 24, 2008 -> 01:42 PM) Indeed he did DC was the only other place that Mondale got electoral votes. Here is the map.
  14. Pretty cool. Looks like another tool for studying an aspect of the Bible (while having the whole thing there as well). I like it better than a typical topic study book because it is the whole Bible and you can see the whole context of what is being highlighted.
  15. QUOTE (Texsox @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 07:48 AM) I was in a waiting room this morning and only saw the scrolling, is Dubya considering another round of free money to stimulate the economy? Yes, he is. Thanks to Bernanke. AP Story
  16. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 13, 2008 -> 12:52 PM) 55%? Wow. The general markets are down only about 30% ATM on the year, I think. Last year at this time, the S&P 500 was at 1564.74. Yesterday, it closed at 899.22. That is a 42.5% drop if I calculated that correctly...
  17. Fun, fun season this year. A lot more than I had expected. Thanks boys!
  18. Pretty relaxed. Just looking forward to enjoying the ride!
  19. Call me optimistic! I still think this team has enough fight in them to make it to October. Getting out of that dome and back home is just what they need.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 01:10 PM) And clearly the farmers know what is needed...more of the crops that they grow! So, to satisfy that need, we dump major subsidies on to growing a couple of specific crops, notably corn. This pushes down the price of corn so far that it becomes an ingredient in everything we eat it seems, from soft drinks to meat to the gas you put in your car...and that only happens because of the major government subsidy for growing corn. Meanwhile the environment is ravaged by all the corn growing, the rest of the world is pushed out because the U.S. market is flooded with corn, the U.S. consumer's diet becomes more and more unhealthy because of all the processed versions of corn they're consuming, and the U.S. taxpayer wastes an enormous amount of money on finding things that can be done with corn, like turning it in to ethanol. That is a straw man argument there. I'm sure that I can point out many ways that money, taxes, resources, etc are used in the city in ways that are not good. The point is that you have 2 different systems whose voices both need to be heard. The big guy's voice should not always drown out the little guy's voice or you end up with a monopoly of sorts where only one voice matters and that is all. JMHO there. So, take it for what it is worth.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 11:34 AM) No, but it also wasn't constructed on the idea that tiny minorities (i.e. corn farmers in Iowa, a few thousand ultra rich bankers in NYC) should be able to dominate our political discussion with their issues while the issues that actually would affect the lives of so many other people (urban schools, adequate public transportation, pollution controls, etc.) are neglected because of them. Yes, because obviously the voice of people growing the food of the nation does not need to be heard... The city people definitely know what is needed to grow our crops and protect the environment outside of their city... Sorry for the sarcasm, but I view it is separate ecosystems in way that each have their own needs. Both voices need to be heard.
