Garland is a RHSP Buehrle is a LHSP LHSP >>> RHSP. That's why you try to keep Buehrle. Garland will get a lot back in a trade, but not as much as Buehrle. Garland will get a lot in free agency, but not as much as Buehrle. IMHO.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 7, 2007 -> 08:41 AM) Your right in principle, but simply put, any pro team that won't rip up cheap, older contracts will be known as cheap, regardless of if it's right or wrong. Also, I'm not sure how that applies to Briggs. He signed a 4 year contract, played it out, and now he's getting screwed. Thing is, that's not the Bears fault, but rather the fault of NFL ass kisser Gene Upshaw and his "players assocation" who let the franchise tag quagmire exist. ^^^^^^^ Exactly. Last time I checked, Briggs was a player...represented by the NFLPA. Upshaw signed it. Deal with it. I can't believe a 1000% raise is considered disrespect. Even if the Bears franchise him again next year, it's going to be almost $9mil GUARANTEED!!! And THEN he goes on the open market. I don't know, I say...let him stew. Or maybe get the rest of the team, that's not disgruntled to kidnap him and stick him in one of the blocking dummies and get CLOBBERED by his team. Shoot, if he would have just ASKED Angelo and Phillips to get him out instead of b***hing to the press, maybe he woulda been gone by now?

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 7, 2007 -> 09:24 AM) Jesus H Christ! If Mark Buehrle ASKS for that contract, you get him to sign it ASAP. That is a STEAL in this marketplace. In all honesty, that way closer than I would have expected. Also out of curiousity, has anyone caught what MB's fastball has been hitting on the gun so far? No kidding...and I let him keep the pen!!! I'm just hoping that the "hometown discount" that Javy gave the Sox and with Konerko and Dye signing for less to come/stay here...this propels Buehrle to at least THINK seriously about staying. Y'know, for as much as some people rip on Guillen, he protects his players and makes them feel like they are important and a bigger part of a team game. As long as you don't cross him, he's got your back. Did anyone read Savard's comments about the 'hawks yesterday? That he and Larmer used to get into yelling matches on the ice, but once it was over, they all knew it was just to be better? That's what Ozzie does....

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Mar 6, 2007 -> 06:12 PM) You have signed Mr. Mediocre to a 3 year extension, which is basically a 4 year contract. Why lock yourself into mediocrity? I thought everyone said there would be a market correction anyway? I'd rather pay someone $13 million-$15 million a year who wins, than pledge all that money to Javier Vazquez. If the White Sox can commit over $40 million the next 4 seasons to Javier Vazquez, there is no reason Dye or Buerhle or Crede or for that matter (and I'm glad he's gone) Garcia should go elsewhere. Not to mention, if a player WANTS to stay with you. Someone that has excellent stuff, even if he has some issues, can pitch. It's good for Buehrle to see this. It's good for Crede to see this. The Sox aren't being cheap, but at the same time, they aren't overspending. One thing Lilly has that Vazquez doesn't have...is being a lefty. LHSP are commodities, and I would take Vaz over Lilly any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Maybe even three times.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Mar 6, 2007 -> 04:47 PM) Ask me in a few years, but that's not the point. I'm not arguing the market value of this deal, with an out of whack market, as of right now this deal doesn't look awful. Will the market correct itself in a few years? Who knows, once again, to me this is all about locking up a pitcher who hasn't proven jack s*** in the american league. He has proven that he has good stuff, that's it. We're locking him based on the prospect that he's going to all the sudden turn it around at the age of 30. Whether its someone in our system or in free agency, their will be better options in a few years imo. And that he took 3 years...and that he took a hometown discount...and that he has a history of some success...and that when he was with a team more than one whole year in a row, he was pretty good.... Buehrle had the opportunity to do the same thing and wants to check his value on an open market. Fine. go do that. Vazquez would rather pitch for the White Sox.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 6, 2007 -> 04:39 PM) hes going to get around 3-5 million less per year than Freddy and probably 2 less years. Maybe javy didnt put together a full year last year of great ball. But once he made significant changes to his delivery, he put together 2 of his best months. He is a good pitcher, signed below market value. I dont understand how anyone could have a problem with this at all. And there you go. You know why Vaz was signed, because he agreed to a 3 year deal at below market value. Exactly what ANY GM would do. Except Hendry, of course. And don't forget, this isn't much of a raise from the White Sox point of view...Arizona thru NY paid $3 mil of his salary last year. Personally, I still would want a veteran starter in my rotation around the likes of Gio, Danks, Haeger, Broadway, McCullough or whoever else is going to be in the rotation in the coming years.

Zook to McPhearson, Ellis: See ya
CanOfCorn replied to thedoctor's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
There is a difference between murder and manslaughter and that is intent. I totally agree with SB here. All you people are doing is looking at the outcome and not the whole incident. Remember, Jamar had a concussion. He wasn't thinking straight. Yeah, he drove back to the apartment complex...do you know how long it took for him to get there? Do you know if he got lost? No. Now, IF Ellis and McPhearson did steal the laptopS and walletS, then that shows intent. Intent to break into peoples houses and take their stuff. They were of sound mind. -
Franchise Tag money is guaranteed. Holdout baby...go ahead, forfeit that cash. Look like an idiot. I wonder where Rosenhaus is in all of this? Is he laying low for a reason? Just pulling strings?

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 5, 2007 -> 03:59 PM) credepopsup Lucy rips one to center, Terrero makes it to 3rd Anyone who isnt listening, the announcers are talking about how all 7 coaches played for the Sox, and how its a loyal org. QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Mar 5, 2007 -> 03:23 PM) Its a nice thought that stuff like this wouldnt happen but lets be realistic, it obviously is. Just as we have the RIGHT to franchise him he has the RIGHT to hold out. I dont like it and I wish it would be easier to keep players around but its not. What did we expect was gonna happen with a Rosenhaus client? Im glad we franchised him though so we can get something for him in a trade but we knew the Bears were never gonna pony up the money to keep him here. Is it greedy? yes. is it bad for the Bears? yes. It happens every day though. Look at what Plummer is doing right now. Look at what T.O. does everywhere. Whether we like it or not, players want to go where they can get the most money and this is a business. Just like it was a business move to franchise him for us, for him its a business move to threaten to hold out. Both sides are doing whats best for them. If this is the situation were gonna have with him in the future maybe its better we trade him anyways. You are right, he does have a right to holdout...although, it does him no good at all. Doesn't up his value "working out with a trainer," instead of actually playing. And the NFLPA agreed to this CBA. You don't like it, Lance? Be a player's rep and fight to get the tags taken off. Until then, deal with it and shut the f*** up.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 5, 2007 -> 03:01 PM) Yeah, they're going to take advantage of his athleticism and make him the starting CF. Graffinino is taking over duties at 3B, Hardy at SS, Weeks at 2B and Fielder at 1B. The Brewers corner the market on young, studly, black position players. Except for Hardy...he's not so black or studly.

QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Mar 5, 2007 -> 01:17 PM) I may be alone here but i cant say i blame him. I think holding out is a little extreme but he was denied his shot at an open market. Sure he wants a ton of money but thats his right, and if theres a team willing to pay him that then oh well. What if he gets injured this year? He doesn't have any guaranteed money or a guaranteed contract. I know if I was a professional athlete I would try my best to stay with the same team but if I was ever franchised it would piss me off too. Not to mention, his own players association agreed to Franchise and Transition Tags in the collective bargaining agreement. I can't believe Gene Upshaw doesn't get up these guys' arses about this. It's not only making a mockery of himself, but he's pissing on the NFLPA.
-
Should we blame Lovie and his agent for this one? Because remember Lovie's agent went public. Not that Drew Rosenhaus needs any impetus to go public or anything. But, I wonder if Lance saw Lovie use the press as a power play and decided that if it worked for him, it'll work for me. Buh bye, Lance. Rod Wilson is waiting for your job. AND...why do players think sitting out a year helps their respect level? You aren't playing and you're being a baby...I wouldn't want that player on my team.

QUOTE(retro1983hat @ Mar 5, 2007 -> 08:40 AM) I think Rush is a big blowhard and Bill Maehr is a no-talent comedian who found a niche to make money that he never did on the comedy circuit. My opinion: Both are nothing more than opportunist jerks. That's probably true, but they are taking those opportunities all the way to the bank. The problem, to me, is that they both believe their own hype. There's a reason Charlie Rose is the best interviewer on TV...he leaves himself out of it. And as for Rush's comments at the Oscars? He's just jealous, but expect a movie called "The Convenient Truth: Tales from the other Side."

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Mar 2, 2007 -> 05:11 PM) you mean ARod over Crede? Because Crede would have had to have been involved, and ARod's (likely) not nearly good enough defensively anymore to play a good SS. And you know this...how? Just because he had problems at third? Can't compare the two. He'd definitely have to lose some weight, but I bet he'd be just as good as he used to be at SS.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 2, 2007 -> 03:06 PM) I would hope I don't know somebody that is stupid enough to do the things Jamar did that evening. Nothing resembling this has come up for me in 21 years though, I guess it's a good sign I can judge who would be too stupid to hang around. That's the thing about doing stupid things. Sometimes, they just happen. Driving drunk is a stupid and moronic thing to do. Why aren't you putting blame on the other people in the house that let him leave? Shoot, he may not even remember leaving the house to drive Carlwell home. Again, I'm not saying he's right, I'm just saying you are being very cavalier with your feelings toward someone. I hope that if you are ever at a party where there are drunk people that you have the cojones to grab keys, slash tires, whatever it takes to stop someone from driving drunk. And also, someone could seem perfectly fine (and I'm not saying Jamar did) and still get into a car and have a major accident.... I'm also not saying he shouldn't be punished, I'm just saying that turning your back on someone for doing something stupid is a bit rough. Especially since it didn't affect you personally.
-
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 2, 2007 -> 11:02 AM) Yes, I have had a mild concussion actually (explains a lot of my posts, eh?) similar to what Jamar was diagnosed with (which is why he didn't spend the night in the hospital). Jamar's problem is he's trying to have it both ways here. Either he was out of it, which means he couldn't have the common sense and decision making to drive back to his apartment, or he was adequate enough to drive back to the apartment, and thus could have at least called 911 when he arrived. Either he was out of it or he wasn't, and based on the circumstances, he's trying to have his cake and eat it too. And I have no problem turning my back on somebody who did as much wrong as Jamar did that night. I hope that one day, when someone close to you does something stupid, that you don't feel the same way. It's very easy for you to say this when you don't know the parties involved.
