It was being there with friends and the college experience all together. And the Chief is a big part of that experience. It's hard for people to let that go. Rock, since you didn't go there, it's hard for you to truly say what that feels like. Maybe you think it's a silly tradition, or hostile, or abusive, or racist, or whatever, but I fondly remember the Chief as a way to bring everyone at the U of I together for 5 minutes, no matter color, race, creed, anything. When we were all cheering at halftime, we were all Illini. EDIT: Doc, college is about more than academics...it's about the experience, as well. It's about a bridge from K-12 to real life. It's about learning to learn. College is bigger than academics...if it wasn't, then sports wouldn't be such a big deal. Or the Greek System. Or all of the clubs.

Let's explain probation: Here's what dictionary.com said: Look, I got probation my first time getting a speeding ticket because I told the judge that I was taught in Driver's Ed that it's safer to go the same speed as surrounding traffic (my instructor did say that, but I left out the part where he said, "you should still drive the speed limit"). The judge said I got some bad advice and put me on probation. If I would've gotten another ticket in the whatever time frame, BOTH tickets would've counted on my record. I didn't get another ticket...and the one I got was expunged from my record. See...GOOD BEHAVIOR got me out of a ticket. The teens violated their probation...they go to jail. It might be a little harsh, but tough s***, life is harsh. And the older you get, the more you'll realize it.

Racism, in many forms, is subjective. What one person thinks is racist, another may not. Little Black Sambo with his big lips and huge smile doesn't represent African-American people. Chief Wahoo doesn't represent Native American people. The Fighting Irish mascot doesn't represent Irish people. University of Illinois' Chief is not a mascot, but a symbol of what the State of Illinois once was before all of us were here. This is my major issue. Even if we keep the name Illini and lose the Chief, then the Illini Tribes are dead. The only remaining tribe left are the Peoria, and they are in Oklahoma. What if the University donated money and resources to them? Would that make a difference? And if it does, then they don't have anything to say about it being hostile and abusive. Here's an interesting take from George Will: This is not the NCAA's job. This is a University issue. And if one of the numerous groups want to sue them in court, then fine. If the courts decide the Chief must go, then I, as an alum, respect that. But if the courts decide for the University, then move on to greater things like the Washington Redskins, Atlanta Braves and their Tomahawk Chop, and the Cleveland Indians. One more interesting thing from George Will: Who decides what is hostile and abusive, Rock?

What could the church do to punish these priests? There isn't a Fort Leavenworth-like jail where Army prisoners go. You can't whip them back behind the cathedral. All the church can do is move him, defrock him and excommunicate him. What's the Cardinal or Pope or Bishop gonna do? Give him a stern talking to? Smack him on the knuckles with a ruler? I mean, c'mon. Remember the law is based on Judeo-Christian teachings. I say, we hang him, then we stab him, then we tattoo him...AND THEN we kill him!!!

Yes, the music was written by a band director, but, so what. And, if I remember correctly, the Chief will also go out with the band and "preform" for school groups and I believe the student portraying the Chief has an obligation to study, as well as teach, the history of the Illini Tribe through speaking engagements (not in dress, but as the student). Everything done by Chief Illiniwek is done out of respect. Now, I understand the ends don't justify the means, or vice versa. But one can't put a blanket statement on the Chief saying that it is racist like all the other schools who have changed their names. Nor can one say that "X-School does it, so why can't we?" It should be on a case-to-case basis and I believe that Illinois has got to be the most difficult case, maybe North Dakota as well. We shouldn't have to bow down to the vocal minority, just because they are vocal, nor should we accept the majority, just because there are more of them. But just as you say, Rock, that you heard the other side and could understand where they came from...did those people go and talk to Chief Illiniwek alumni? Did they talk to relatives of Frank Fool's Crow? Did they do any research as to why Chief Illiniwek does what he does? Or did they just say, "No sir, I don't like it."
