QUOTE(dmbjeff @ Jan 30, 2006 -> 03:42 PM) this is a great quote from the Mets message board about Contreras and the staff as a whole: "Considering that he is part of the 'amazing' White Sox rotation, I wonder how many would be in favour of this trade. I'd rather he was a mid season possibility, still not convinced that he like others in that rotation wasn't performing above his head." its so laughable, those new yorkers really hate the second city. ...with envy.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 07:57 PM) Hey cool. The quotes from Kenny in that article on Page 3 of this thread are from my question Friday nite. That's right...rub it in. Us out-of-towners looooove to hear that. But I'm not bitter, if that's the direction I wanted to go.

Didn't they already make "The Day After Tomorrow?"

Southern Comfort: First hard liquor I ever tried and I thought it tasted like NyQuil. Now so-co AND NyQuil have been ruined forever (although I still take "the Big Q" but only if I have to). Grape Juice: Drank too much when I was 6 and threw up purple the rest of the day. Still can't drink it.

I think part of the problem was that he continued to relay these stories as the truth. In fact, he bathed in them. Three little words woulda saved his ass: "Based on fact."

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jan 28, 2006 -> 02:18 PM) On general principle discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation where it applies to jobs, housing, & other monetary factors is an undesireable thing. But when it comes to protecting against such discrimination specifics need to be taken into consideration. Being close-minded means only looking at an issue from one side. That's what most of you Dem voters do. Rarely do you ever discuss any pro from the other side. I don't think most of you are capable of such open-minded analysis. The specifics of discrimination have little to do with one man or woman & everything to do with demographics. If a white employer chooses a white applicant over a black applicant in an area where the population is 90% white it's ridiculous to suggest he's discriminating against blacks. But if the population were say 30% black & he employs only 3% blacks then a case can be made. That's why quotas are good when they are applied with respect to LOCAL demographics. Employers aren't just employing robots. They look for people who share thier same vision, principles, & values as they do. It makes for a more productive workforce. Gays nationally represent between 2-7% of the population. Of course that varies from town to town but it doesn't come close to making an argument for quotas and such. In all fairness to the employers & residents of a community such laws should ban the practice of making sexual orientation the SOLE reason for denial. An employer should not be given the right to say his application has been denied because the person is gay. But the employer has every right to state that the coming views sodomy as a significant health risk & sufficient reason for denying health benefits to such applicants. All they need is a medical expert to confirm their view & their are plenty available to do that. There is nothing wrong with a company denying an applicant employment on the basis of BEHAVIOR they feel warrants a significant health or attendance risk. If they feel certain BEHAVIORs will affect productivity then they have every right to deny an applicant work on that basis. All that should be required legally is for the employer to present a medical expert in good standing with the state as evidence in support of their claim. Is that 2%-7% include people that haven't come out yet, or don't know yet or are afraid to come out for the reasons you stated? If you don't hire someone based on their BEHAVIOR outside of the office, that is discrimination. If someone walks in and states he/she wants to overhaul the entire company because it sucks, that's a basis. I can go find a doctor to tell me anything I want, or twist it to mean anything I want. Shoot, I take my life into my own hands everyday just driving to work. Should we all have to take DNA tests and provide family health histories for every job now? If there is a history of cancer in a family or diabetes or anything that might require time off or a lot of medications and doctor visits, should I not be hired? I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous. Do I think you can do the job? Can you work well with others? Does your personality fit? Are you gay never comes up and shouldn't ever come up. It's none of my employers business, just like if someone enjoyed skydiving, stamp collecting or racing motorcycles.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jan 27, 2006 -> 02:01 PM) Halloween 3 was absolutely horrible as well, along with Resurrection. It has zero business as a Halloween movie. They should have just called it Season of the Witch because Halloween = Michael Myers. 277 more days til Halloween, Halloween, Halloween... 277 more days til Halloween...Silver Shamrock!

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 27, 2006 -> 03:43 PM) It is interesting that people who found inspiration in this guys story, when they believed it to be true, suddenly have lost that inspiration whe they learned it was fiction. I guess when someone publishes a book that becomes a "self help, here's how I saved myself", people want the guy to actually have suffered. How about a "that is great, you didn't spend all that time in jail". Because it's perspective. You can relate to a guy who went through the same thing. "This person suffered like I am and look at him now." When it's all a lie, you don't have that ideal to look up to anymore. I'm not saying that this is always the case, because many people find it within themselves to get over whatever it is they are getting over. But sometimes it feels good to know that someone is saying what you are feeling and what they did to get over it.

QUOTE(Mickster @ Jan 27, 2006 -> 10:59 AM) 1. I seriously doubt that Frank will be healthy for a full season. 2. I seriously doubt that Frank would have signed here for $500K + incentives. You are right...he would be playing for...let's see...$3.5 mil buyout + $500,000 + $2.6 mil in incentives, sooo...carry the one... 1 year/$6.6 mil with $4 mil guaranteed. I say...nope, thanks for the memories, I hope you get your 500 hrs...and i hope you go 0-fer against the Sox.

Anyone that carries a cell phone AND a pager. You see, when you have a phone, they can call you on that, not page you to find out where you are, so you can call them back. Also, you see, you can still screen calls because cell phones display the number of the person that's calling. See how that works?

QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Jan 26, 2006 -> 01:04 PM) I nominate anyone associated with Cold Pizza and Sturt Scott.. Who do you think?? Oy, we're gonna start this, huh? :lol Oh, there are so many. I'll skip the obvious and go right to one that is getting my goat right now...Madonna. She goes ON TV and tells the people that she won't let her children watch TV because of all the crap that's on TV. Um...hello...don't you realize that you ARE ON TV!!! So you taketh, but you don't giveth. Interesting. Also, Austin drivers...maybe it's just like this in Texas, but I have NEVER seen such horrible drivers in my whole life...and I learned how to drive in Chicago, around Devon, if you know what I'm sayin'!

Remember, you can walk away from your job at any time without repercussions, people in the armed forces can get tossed in jail if they do. They are following orders. They are representing you whether you like it or not. They are still Americans, just like you. They still wear the flag on their sleeve. Don't kill the messenger (so to speak). And that's what Stein is doing here.

Wow...I just lost a lot of respect for Joel Stein. What does he expect the troops to do? Lay down their weapons and surrender? Get shot? Walk through the desert and/or mountains to Turkey for a safe haven? NOw I'm all for being out of Iraq, but this guy is out of his gourd. I mean, c'mon, a lot of those people joined to have their college paid for...a lot of those people joined to get out of bad situations at home. It seems he portrays them as blood thirsty, kool-aid drinking mongrels. I think someone needs to be embedded in Iraq for a couple of years to truly see what the troops have to deal with.

Maybe we can get Royce Ring back? I just don't think the Mets have what we want. I wouldn't think we would want Floyd, but Milledge + their highest rated minor league pitcher might be something to think about...if they have one left after all of Minaya's dealing.

Does the "C" have any meaning besides for show? Does it give someone more on-field responsibilities? And good for you, Paulie, only take the "C" if the team wants you to take the "C."

QUOTE(Steff @ Jan 25, 2006 -> 04:34 PM) Hatch Guilty of Failing to Pay Taxes Jan 25 1:57 PM US/Eastern Email this story By RAY HENRY Associated Press Writer PROVIDENCE, R.I. Richard Hatch, the "fat naked guy" who won $1 million in the debut season of the reality show "Survivor," was found guilty Wednesday of failing to pay taxes on his winnings. Hatch was also convicted of evading taxes on $327,000 he earned as co- host of a Boston radio show and $28,000 in rent on property he owned. But he was acquitted of seven bank, mail and wire fraud charges. Jurors deliberated for less than a day after more than a week of testimony. Hatch, 44, of Newport, faces up to 13 years in prison and a fine of $600,000. One possible explanation for Hatch's failure to pay taxes was raised by his lawyer toward the end of the trial but was never mentioned in the jury's presence. Hatch's lawyer, Michael Minns, said Hatch caught fellow contestants cheating and struck a deal with producers for the show to pay his taxes if he won. But, ultimately, Hatch was never asked about the allegation when he testified. Instead, Minns told jurors Hatch was the "world's worst bookkeeper" and said his client never meant to do anything wrong. Hatch testified that he thought producers were supposed to pay his "Survivor" taxes, and said the donations he took from his charity were far less than the money he had already poured into it. Premiering Monday night on CBS: Survivor: Stateville. Two tribes...Crips and Bloods. I see it now........

QUOTE(mreye @ Jan 25, 2006 -> 01:55 PM) That's all fine and dandy, but the people that answer these polls aren't the same ones that actually show up and vote. People get scared when they vote. I remember hearing, I think during the '96 election, that people would rather stay with the status quo, regardless of party, for a second term. Not because they magically started to like that candidate, but because they don't like change.
-
Look, I said in the second line, it will never completely go away. But, c'mon, you can't tell me that not being able to touch another person in your life...including yourself...isn't going to drive the occasional person to do something bad? Anyway you slice it, sickos are sickos, but going after the church ain't gonna do anything. They have money and representation out the butt to protect them. the only thing that'll REALLY cut it down is to keep preaching (literally) for anyone to speak up when they are molested. But, allowing priests to marry and allowing women would definitely bring this problem down. You certainly don't hear this happening as much within other religions...or do you? I haven't.

Frank Thomas signs with Oakland Athletics
CanOfCorn replied to OfficerKarkovice's topic in Pale Hose Talk
First of all, Goodbye Frank...I'll miss you. And thanks for all the non-'roid moonshots you hit over the years! Second of all, does he give in and bat 4th? Just wondering since he's never liked to hit there, but he will prolly be their biggest (literally and figuratively) hitter.
