    IT'S A BOY!!!!

Congrats! Only 8 more to field a full team!
  2. Pretty interesting article about the so-called "youth movement." Holy S#!T...they aren't talking about the Red Sox!
  3. QUOTE (knightni @ Feb 27, 2009 -> 03:38 PM) If you're including a coach, choose Halas or Phil Jackson over Ditka. Halas yes...Jackson, no. The thing about Ditka is that he stayed here. Even though he was born in Pennsylvania, he is the epitome of Chicago. He's even kind of an extension of the Halas family. Phil Jackson is a great coach, but he gawn. Ditka is the epitome of Chicago. Just sayin'.
  4. QUOTE (smalls2598 @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 03:04 PM) Correct me if I'm wrong, but what you are proposing is not the same as what the Education Chief mentioned in that article. What I do know is that teachers work their asses off (at least the one's I know do). My girlfriend basically spends 7:30 am to 4 pm each day at school, and even longer if there are meetings or tutoring. She also has to spend hours at home grading tests/quizzes/homework, getting report cards done, setting up meetings with parents, and various other things i never even thought of before i dated a teacher. And she puts in numerous hours on the weekend planning for the next week's lesson plans. She is truly exhausted by time the work week is over. It's not easy being a teacher, especially when kids do not want to learn. I'm sure some teachers have it easier, whether because they've been doing it longer or at a better school where kids actually do want to achieve good grades and strive to set themselves up for high school or college. She enjoys teaching, she loves it when students "get it" and it's great to see student's minds grow. But she busts her butt for 9 months of the year to achieve those things. She looks forward to her 3 months of rest. Taking that away would make her question if she would continue to be a teacher, because all the stress would kill her if it were year round. Teachers are one of the most underpaid and overworked professions around. But, y'know, there are a lot of professionals that could use 3 months off, but don't have that choice. I don't buy that argument. There are teachers that do more and some that do less...as in any job. This is a touchy subject...I don't think the day should be longer, but I do like the 3 month on, 1 month off idea. The unions will have to ask for more money because of the loss of the second job (although I do know a teacher that works retail on weekends and days off). But, that's a good thing. Bad in the short term, but great in the long run.
  5. I think there's two reasons why. One, AQ seems to dislike a lot of countries. They've made their point with the US...now it seems they are concentrating more on the other countries, some a little closer to home.... Two, this is a global recession/depression. We're kinda all in this together, right now. And I would think that the cash flow is down for even ridiculous things like AQ. I mean, c'mon, you know that they had their money in the markets...US or others. And none of them are performing. Just my .02.
  6. QUOTE (knightni @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 11:31 PM) Actually, that would be on 3/14/15. It's a math themed event. Wouldn't it be 3/14/16...you'd have to round it.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 09:45 AM) Can you get a cable card? Also if I have a regular box already, does that contain the cable card? Would I be able to take out that one and put it into a new one? Basically I am looking at it as they want $9 a month for an HD box, or $16 for an HD/DVR box. If I pay upfront, what I would pay in a year anyway, I want to just buy the damned thing, and not pay for it in perpetuity. Get Uverse...$9 for an HD/DVR box. If it is in your area.
  8. Favorites in order: AT&T/SBC/Pac-Bell US Cellular Minute Maid Comiskey Dodger Stadium Wrigley Field Ballpark at Arlington No longer around, but a special place in my heart: Comiskey Old Busch Stadium County Stadium
  9. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 27, 2009 -> 10:41 AM) I'd have to add the Chairman to any mount rushmore of chicago. He brought 7 titles to this city, is there another owner in sports today that has accomplished that feat? I was going to say Big Stein, but I think he only has 6. How about the Buss family? How long have they had the Lakers?
  10. I heard a great thing on ESPN 1000 this morning. Norm Van Lier was Charles Barkley on TNT before Charles Barkley on TNT. RIP Stormin' Norman...all of Chicago will miss you.
  11. RIP Red...you will be missed. And the thing that really gets my goat about Johnny "Red" Kerr Night wasn't the fact that they had it, but the fact that he wasn't inducted into the Hall of Fame. This isn't an NBA HOF...it's a BASKETBALL HOF. What more does one man have to do? Public League Champion Final Four NBA Champion Third best Center of his playing time First Head Coach of the Bulls and Suns Fantastic Color Guy The fact that he and Tex Winter aren't in the Hall is beyond me. My heart goes out to his immediate family and his extended family...all of Chicago.
  12. If this is about who represents the Sox, I think I'd have to go with Thomas/Jackson/Fox/and a two headed monster of Appling/Aparicio. Man...this is hard. Minnie Minoso is also a bit deserving just as a Sox representative. And I don't even have pitchers up there...Y'know what...forget it. I give up.
  13. BS - Broadcast Journalism "Areas of Concentration" - Sociology and Philosophy Keep toying with the idea of going back to school for Instructional Design. Anyone know of a school for that close to Chicago?
  14. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Feb 25, 2009 -> 02:15 PM) I cant see any city putting up the financing to build a stadium right now, or in the near future. Teams are locked in where they are and are going to have to make due with their current financial situations. KC - The team has lasted this long in that market and recently had renovations, dont see them going anywhere. Detroit - Probably the team in the most trouble because of their payroll obligations and increasing unemployment rate in the area, Detroit will probably see a shift from spending like a large market team to more of a small to mid market team over the next 10 years. Cleveland - The team is in pretty good financial condition and the population of the city will hold steady at least. Minnesota - Almost folded once, but a new stadium will cease any specualtion about that possibility and the team will continue to operate with its financial constraints. Pittsburgh is a team that could be in trouble, low attendance, small market size, and a lack of results hurts the team, though it has a storied history and a newer stadium to keep it anchored. Florida - The team is in the process of building a new stadium and ownership will be obligated to keep the team in the area for a period of time after the stadium is completed so that the city can recoup some of the money that was invested. Going nowhere. TB - Last season a WS run, this season contenders in the East that will likely fade in the second half of the season. Last years success will cause an attendance bump, but with no financing available the team will look at re-locating but have few options available (Charlotte, OKC?) Not going to comment about finances, because, honestly, I don't know. But their population, like most of the Rust Belt has been going down steadily. And with a lack of jobs, it will continue.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 24, 2009 -> 11:52 AM) We are down 3-1 in the season series against MN this year FWIW. I was mostly using the Wild as an example, but take a team like Detroit who can grind you like that, and has superior talent on top of it. Look at the Winter Classic game as an example. The Hawks came out flying, but then Detroit took control of the tempo of the game and instead of an open skate, they turned it into a grind fest in the corners, and won the game. It's what still makes me believe the Hawks are a second tier team. They are on pace for over 100 points, which is awesome, but they aren't quite to a Cup Contender status in my eyes. Don't take it wrong, I can't believe the Hawks have made it as far as they have already, but if you want to beat the Hawks, teams could take some notes from the Wild. Yeah...down 3-1...come back and win it 4-3. See, it all works out in the end!
  16. Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name of Subquestion answer: "f*** you I won't do what you tell me." What...? Not gonna work? OR: Ben Folds - Rockin' the Suburbs "You better look out, cuz I'm gonna say f***."
  17. Happy Birthday! May Ozzie Guillen shower you with a million blessings.
  18. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Feb 24, 2009 -> 12:39 PM) I would rather see this organization "get younger" by developing its own talent from the minors and not keep trading away talent. You build from within. Konerko, Dye and Thome, et al are veterans who can help teach and mentor young players. Let's not be so quick to want to trade them just because they make some money or are up for contract talks. AJP and Konerko and Buerhle and Dye and Thome are team leaders and you need that expereince to continue as a winning ball club. Plus whoever said 33 is old? 23 year olds...
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 24, 2009 -> 11:40 AM) Cheeseburgers. Its him and Bartolo for the title! I'm going with the vet...although he might tweak his duodenum.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 23, 2009 -> 09:29 AM) But you have seen in a nutshell how to beat the Hawks. Slow, methodical, physical, and 60 minutes. These are the type of teams the Hawks really need to focus for an entire 60 minutes to beat. I will say they deserved better in this one though. They played a good game, and had a bunch of chances. Their goalie stood on his head, and that high stick goal I still don't believe. I wonder what they were looking at in Toronto to count that one. True...in one game. Not sure the 'hawks couldn't beat the Wild in a 7 game series. Might go all 7 though. Going to the Kings game on Sunday and am looking forward to it. Haven't been to a game in probably 10 years.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 24, 2009 -> 11:33 AM) Cause Viciedo's going for 50. Pounds or homers?
  22. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 24, 2009 -> 10:35 AM) Weve all seen what happens when New Mexico gets a sport franchise. Bold new flavors, a starving man in the outfield, can we really let that happen again? As for the comparison to Seattle (I almost posted this to start), the difference with baseball and basketball is that basketball can be played in arenas that already exist for the most part. The Ford Center was opened in 2002 in OKC. They built it so that they could keep the NCAA tournament and try and attract a NHL or NBA team. Can you name any MLB quality baseball stadiums that have been opened in the last 5 years that are not currently housing a baseball team, in any of the locations suggested? In bad economic times its going to be much harder to get loans and to get tax payer support to build a stadium for a team that isnt even there. How are tax payers going to react if the stadium is basically empty for years (like the Ford Center) and they spent hundreds of millions on it. Also basketball stadiums can host lots of other things...concerts, rodeo, wrestling/mma/boxing, hockey, arena football, even convention space. Baseball stadiums are used for...well, baseball. Here's a question that I don't know the answer to, maybe someone here does...were the football stadiums in Charlotte and Nashville built with the possibility of using them for baseball? I know that's not the way the sports are working these days, but wasn't sure if they were looking ahead, just in case.
  23. QUOTE (joeynach @ Feb 24, 2009 -> 09:53 AM) Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico. I also think Salt Lake City might work as well as New Orleans (made more sense before Katrina). Albuquerque might not be a bad choice, although outside of Albuquerque, it's an hour to the next metro area (Santa Fe). But the Dukes/Isotopes have done well for years.
  24. QUOTE (chwhtsox @ Feb 24, 2009 -> 09:47 AM) teams will do some strange things at the deadline, considering any player can be injured at any time it's not out of the realm of possibility that someone would trade for these guys (if they have a strong first half showing) And if the Sox REALLY want to get younger and get some good young talent in return, they might have to eat some of the salary (which I know the Sox don't usually do, but for short contract lives, they might consider it).
