Question for Boers and Bernstein listeners...
fathom replied to Kid Gleason's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 06:45 AM) I can't stand Mac Jurko and Harry, they are like the stereotypical Chicago sports fans. I love Waddle and Silvy, and I think the perspective Mully and Hanley bring as sportswriters is a very good listen, especially in the morning. But B&B is the best show by far IMO, I mean their two "sidekicks" in Drinky and Goff are both hosts I like, let alone in the roles they are for that show. Plus I love the "schtick" B&B have. I wish Drink and/or Goff would get their own show, but that's for another day. I used to like Laurence Holmes a lot more, but since he got his own show (well, and teamed with Dan Hampton, who sucks big time), I am not as big a fan. He seems to have changed a bit in the last several months, and that is unfortunate. Jurko is such an ignorant ass. I don't think I've ever heard an intelligent thought from him. My 4 most annoying Chicago media members are Jurko, Murph, ZZ, and David Kaplan. -
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 03:09 AM) You do realize that it's irrational to make judgments on players based on seeing him once, right? It's equally irrational to discount the value of what the player has done throughout the year. How can you say stats are meaningless? WSF101 saw the same Bailey starts for the Reds that I did. His stuff was extremely underwhelming in those games.

QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 03:51 AM) I find it hard to believe that any team, especially one hoping to contend for the playoffs would have Nick Punto as a starter, I have no problems with him as a utility guy, but he is a pretty poor starter. They gave him a ton of money
-
Twins signed Punto today. I can't see them signing OC.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 03:40 AM) Betemit will make 1.3 this year, FWIW. 500k less than HoRam

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 12:56 AM) If I was the Cubs, I would give the Padres anything they wanted for Peavy. He is arguably one of the top 3 arms in the NL. Yep, I was thinking today that a rotation with Peavy, Zambrano, Harden, Dempster and Lilly, in what is shaping up to be an absolutely terrible NL Central, could likely lead to the Cubs being a 105-110 win team.

QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 07:06 AM) I still keep having this fantasy where DePaul hires a a young, hungry, top mid-major coach or a top assistant from an elite program and picks up a couple of top-5 2011 Chicago kids and all is right in my college basketball world... Chris Collins -
QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 05:34 AM) The White Sox are taking the extreme approach to this recesion and are gonna play the cheap game. KW's either really good at staying under the radar, or we are not in the picture for any of these free agents. I haven't seen the Sox listed as a possible suitor by anyone.

DePaul needs to fire JW immediately. They lost to Morgan State tonight. -
QUOTE (Jimmywins1 @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 03:07 AM) They're just clearing room for David Price. Doesn't mean you have to settle for a likely bench player.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 03:02 AM) Except Joyce isn't exactly highly touted nor has he ever shown anything too special at the minor league level. Good power numbers last year. I agree with you though, it's a brutal trade by Tampa.
-
QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 03:00 AM) David Cook or John Shelby? Joyce has Kevin Maas/Chris Shelton written all over him. David Cook is not thought of highly outside of this board. From what I can tell, he has no future with this organization.
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 03:57 AM) Lets say the asking price was a toolsy major league ready outfielder. Who do the Sox even have to offer? Given what Joyce did as a 23 year old between AAA and the Bigs I think he has better value than Anderson. I'm sure in the eyes of some Brian has proven that he can not hit major league pitching. Yeah, sounds like they wanted a potential corner outfielder with power. Obviously Dye for Jackson would be a bad trade, so I guess we don't really match up.
-
QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 03:47 AM) meanwhile the sox still are not doing anything. If that's all it cost to get Jackson, then I'm upset we didn't go after him.
-
Very nice trade for Detroit. Jackson's nothing special, but he's better than throwing Robertson or Rogers out there.
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 02:31 AM) Scott Boras is an absolute shark. Tex has very little to do with it other than being a ballplayer. I love him as a person, as everyone who was around him at GT thought the world of him. I just don't think he's worth close to the amount he's going to receive.
-
Mark Teixeira must do something I don't see, as there's no way he's worth this amount of money.
-
Doesn't he have a torn ligament in his elbow? When he pitched in the postseason, he was horrible.
-
QUOTE (ChiSox420* @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 10:42 PM) It seems the Marlins are looking for catching for Hermida... what about a package involving Lucy? Lucy is not a prospect
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 11:28 PM) I may be off on that, but I read somewhere that both Marshall and Pie were out of options. I thought it was Marshall and Cedeno
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 11:19 PM) He seems too much like Darin Erstad for me. A guy who will play more than he should, plus he's not the defender he used to be. And gets injured all the time.
-
QUOTE (DBAHO @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 10:50 PM) All I'm saying is that a few starting pitchers that we've had over the past such as Esteban Loaiza and more recently John Danks, learnt the cutter, because their fastball wasn't really enough of a strikeout pitch to begin with, and from reading Marquez's stuff, he seems like a perfect candidate. Danks I'll give you. Loaiza had something else going on it seems like.
-
QUOTE (daa84 @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 09:48 PM) pfff nobody on the yankees throws an above average cutter Haha, well said (Mariano, Pettitte)
-
QUOTE (Friend of Nordhagen @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 09:39 PM) Interesting note today by Rosenthal about J.J. Putz, which might tell us what the market would be for Jenks: Cardinals have offered Rick Ankiel and a prospect for Putz. Now maybe Putz is more valuable than Jenks (older but with better velocity), but that's a pretty good return. Ankiel's a good ballplayer. Ankiel's a free agent after this year, I believe.
-
QUOTE (DBAHO @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 10:34 PM) I'd potentially disagree with that. Viciedo could still contribute in 2009 at some point IMO, and may produce better than what Swisher did. Josh Fields IF healthy, could outproduce Crede / Uribe. And we've arugbly jettisoned 2 weak links in Swisher and Vazquez from the team. All depends on what KW does from here on out though. As much as I hate Vazquez, you'd have to say he'd be significantly better in 2009 than Marquez.
