QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 01:24 PM) Let's have some Pods perspective here. The idea with Pods is to get on base, and then either steal or threaten to steal, right? OBP this year: .343 OBP last year: .351 SB this year: 21/28 (75%) SB last year: 59/82 (72%) So... the guy has almost the say OBP, WHILE he is in a slump, as last year. And his SB's are at a higher success rate than last year. What exactly is the problem again? His only positive so far on the year is that he's walking more but the fact that he's stealing 75% of the time (average SB% for someone of his skill set) is not really a huge positive, it's more of an indictment as to how bad he was at stealing bases last year, the same goes for his OBP which as Cap'n pointed out is ranked 9th out of 14 leadoff men in the AL, in other words it's mediocre. He hit .233 in April, .318 in May and now .136 in June that's a horrible trend and it's left him with a .247 batting average which is just pathetic for a leadoff man. The fact that his defense appears to have gotten worse is not helping matters either, the guy gets some of the most pathetic jumps on balls then takes bad routes to get there and misplays the ball once it gets to him. His horrid arm is just making him look even worse, he's possibly the worst defensive OF in baseball right now and when combining htat with his mediocre offensive numbers I'm not really sure why anyone is wondering why he's catching s*** for his play. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 01:25 PM) He is not good. Hey, fixed that for ya.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 01:00 PM) Are you being serious? There is no way that was 435. The wall is 400 feet there, and it only was about 5 feet from hitting the kids area all of the way at the top of the upward sloping grass area that serves as a batters eye there. That shot was 450-475 feet legitimately. Yeah, I thought it was completely ridiculous too but that's the official measurement.
-
Garland also had that RBI single last year in SD so we know they aren't completely useless with runners in scoring position.
-
Oddly enought it was only measured at 435 ft. which makes it his 2nd longest HR on the season (448 on April 4th vs Westbrook was his longest.)

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 12:43 PM) You just need to remind your peers that those little aminals grow up into godless killing machines. Do you find that Steven Cobert severly affects your everyday conversations? It's just not fair I tells ya.

QUOTE(SoxFan76 @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 08:42 AM) It was a "f***ing" exaggeration. Exactly why I asked if you were using hyperbole, it's not hard to answer a simple question.

QUOTE(tigerfan @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 11:27 AM) I know a lot of you guys won't like this, but I agree completely with Jay's column. I think this whole retailiation crap is stupid. The object is get the guy out, not to knock him on the seat of his pants. If you want to make a statement, then embarass the other team by beating them on the field where it matters most. Furthermore regarding what Ozzie did, I think it should have been handled differently. If he was gonna yell at him like that he should have done it away from the cameras. Also, the guy is a rookie, don't put him in a situation like that. If Ozzie really wanted to hit Blaylock, he should have had someone in there who would be more likely to do it. Someone who's been around for a while. I do agree with you on both parts, it seemed that Showalter was trying to get under the White Sox' and Ozzie especially's skin by hitting AJ twice. He wanted the Sox to retaliate and get tossed/suspended. The best revenge was with what the team did yesterday, winnning the damn series in a blow out. Though I will never agree with Marriotti.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 11:22 AM) Well, you agreed with RNW who inferred that Ozzie didnt know how to use his pen. Ick, I kind of agree, I felt the overall thought that Ozzie tends to play the matchups far too often in an attempt to have righties face righties and lefties face lefties which gets annoying but considering what he's had to work with he's done a fairly good job this year with the exception of how he's handled McCarthy. Also, you have to admit the way he used Cotts early in the year to start off the 9th instead of going to Jenks right away was just ridiculously stupid.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 11:07 AM) Considering he had probably the best pen in baseball last year, I woud say he must have been good at using it. Also this year with only 1 or 2 reliable relievers, we are still up there as far as pens go. I would say those two things alone prove that Ozzie is good with the pen. I never said he sucks at using the pen, I think he's alright at how he used/uses his guys it's just annoying how he plays the percentages the majority of the time when the stats actually prove otherwise.
-
QUOTE(YASNY @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 10:51 AM) Not really. He, again, had to go through the sorting out periods and let guys fall into their roles. It takes a while, but it's coming together now. Since the day Ozzie got here he's been playing the matchups righty Vs right, lefty Vs lefty no matter what the stats say. Cotts has the ability to get righties out yet he tends to only face lefties. Riske is better against lefties than he is against righties and yet he'll probably prodominately face righies. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 10:52 AM) Yeah, any manager would have had a tough time when there was only one reliable reliever. I think he's done a solid job with the bullpen. Not really this year, mainly the past 2.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 16, 2006 -> 10:25 AM) Ahhh, couldnt find anything negative about the trade, so you had to try and take a pot shot at the way Ozzie uses his pen? Nice work. He's right.
-
There's a reason why I havn't read an article of his in 4 years, he's not worth my attention.
-
QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 10:23 PM) Why did you use one guys first name and the other guys last name? Also, it's too dark. Isn't this sort of like Gage correcting someone's grammar?

QUOTE(Capn12 @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 10:57 PM) Had we just kept the guy in your avatar, the SS issues woulda never surfaced really. A true 5 tool player who was destined for greatness, that we foolishly gave up prematurely. Preachin' to the motha fracking choir here. The kid knew how to get the damn job done, it's a shame the way baseball treats minorities these days. He had a crazy bright future in this league.
-
Well Pablo is faster, a better contact hitter and a better base runner in general but we are also 7-9 when he starts so he must be using his crazy ass voodoo against us somehow. I'm torn.
-
QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 10:52 PM) I didn't know it was sarcasm 'til I read this part. :uhoh You sir, are a damn fool. I ask that you refrain from using me as the subject of your pathetic attempts at humor.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 10:35 PM) Couldn't agree more with Dan. I'm with you, I know some of you will laugh at this trade but that's because you're all dumbass meatheads. Think about it, remember the days when Contreras was on the Yankees? He sucked, I mean he was real bad, that Contreras will soon be back no matter what he's doing now. Why not move him now and get something for him before he reverts back to his sucky ways? Steve Kline is a stud, plain and simple, this one time when he was on the Cardinals I saw him strike out 2 batters in 1 innning, how pitchers have you seen do that? With Steve Kline comming out of the pen with his fire and crazy awesome heat (98 MPH fastball) the Sox would be totally unstoppable. Uribe blows ass, plain and simple. I havn't seen him get a single hit all year and the guy strikes out more than Adam Dunn but you never hear about it because the Chicago Media is always putting a positive spin on the Sox and ignoring the fact that Uribe is probably the worst SS in baseball right now. Also, have you seen this guy play defense? He's crazy out there, way too erratic for my taste. Omar Vizquel is easily the best defensive SS in baseball and has a ridiculously high OBP something this team needs desperately. Vizquel's sick combination of contact hitting, power, speed and OBP would put this team over the top while soidifying the defense. A lot of you unintelligent people will probably think this is a bad idea because of your ridiculously pathetic and misguided love for that 60 year old Cuban guy and Juan "teh suck" Uribe but take it from someone who is much much smarter than you are, this trade would gaurantee a return to the World Series and I think we all know there ain't a damn team in the NL who can hang with us.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 10:26 PM) Yeah but those arent because of him... he has been awesome this season besides a few fielding miscues in that one cleveland game I think. Plus he is just so much fun to watch. I think the numbers speak for themselves, if this team wants to win Pablo needs to be on the bench and if he does find his way into the game he needs to steal more bases and swing at everything to avoid any possibility of a walk.
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 10:16 PM) Pablo=White Sox winner. The Sox are 7-9 in games that Pablo starts. The Sox are 3-2 in games in which Pablo has a SB. The Sox are 0-4 in games in which Pablo has a BB.

QUOTE(Heath @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 10:11 PM) Marte got offered to the Reds from the Pirates - you might get him back. Is Neal Cotts getting too much work again? - After watching the ALDS, ALCS & WS - well, you know the story, what bullpen? Marte is a wacko nutcase I think he outstayed his welcome here the first time around.

I feel like I'm back in '05, the return of the incredibly off base VAfan threads.

QUOTE(Heath @ Jun 15, 2006 -> 09:49 PM) Brandon McCarthy might find himself in a situation where he'd get tossed right into a #3/4 starter where every 5th day, he'd get the ball. But with Garcia's ERA increasing, and isn't Garland an FA-to-be anyway, I think the Sox would have to be overwhelmed to get rid of Mac. I think a Wagner has tremendous upside, but the 10 cent head will keep him from being a millionaire. He could pull a Cliff Politte-type pitcher, and he has closer stuff, but no mentality. Garland inked a 3 year $29M contract extention this past offseason.
