AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
southsideirish71 replied to greasywheels121's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ May 20, 2007 -> 05:37 PM) Masset's start should change some minds concerning his immediate future. Not necessarily in 2007, but over the next several seasons. His fastball this afternoon was consistently 92-94 mph with movement coupled with a tight breaking ball. Considering how this was his first start major league start, sustaining good velocity through 5+ innings is rather impressive. Out of the bullpen -- where one would assume Masset might 'air out' and throw harder -- he's shown no difference in velocity from this afternoon. He's more valuable to this organization as a starter if today is any indication. The remainder of this season will determine his future. I'm sure he'll find several more spot-starts before 2007 concludes. This is what I was saying about Massett last night. He might not be a tick below Jenks in the upper 90s category, but he has a good fastball, a nice two seamer, and a good curve. If he can throw more strikes and get aggressive we may have something there. Danks and Massett for Bmac. That is a nice trade so far. -

Today is my daughter Caitlin's christening. My jagoff Cub's fan brother will be over celebrating their world series win this weekend. I would like to shut him up with a Massett nice start. Win one for pride. Win one for the gipper, whatever cheesey line they need. -
QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 20, 2007 -> 09:24 AM) As you note, he conveniently skipped over Thomas and Everett, I'm sure due to their ages. None of the guys he listed were "non-veterans," with the exceptions of Young and McCarthy. When it comes down to it, it's going to amount to: McCarthy/Young versus Gio, Floyd, Masset, Danks and whoever we eventually acquire for Vazquez. Essentially, KW's betting on his "two for one" philosophy being the best call on these pitching deals. That if one is a bust, there's still a chance the other one will excel. And that's our hope, that two of those five pitchers (along with Adam Russell) will make it and establish themselves as members of our rotation. I was a huge Bmac fan, Danks and Massett for Bmac is a great trade for the sox.

QUOTE(Whitewashed in @ May 19, 2007 -> 07:14 PM) Aarsdma - 3.63 MacDougal - 5.40 Jenks - 3.18 Masset - 6.61 Logan - 4.63 Sisco - 6.75 Thornton - 4.66 That's the ERA of each guy in our bullpen. We have seen Aardsma blow up in the late innings 3 times now. Logan loves giving up those big homers. Either really good or really bad. Sisco can't throw a strike. MacDougal - ...can't throw a strike. Thornton - Throws too many 1st pitch fastballs. Masset - Our long reliever who gives up too many hits and walks while striking out no one, but he's on par with Jenks. Jenks - the only guy who has done anything good even without his best stuff. I know a lot of these guys are young. I know no one is going to have a 0 ERA the whole season, but these guys were barely getting the job done when they were doing good and now just completely suck. With this offense if we can't turn the game over with a lead to the bullpen we are DONE. Massett is a mop up guy for right now. I think he will be much better as a starter. When he has had a chance to go long, he has been great. He throws a good 2 seam fastball that moves. And he has a plus curve. Is he throwing upper 90s no. Is he 92-94 yes. Thats good as a starter. Thornton, you want him to throw first pitch fastballs, because like Sisco and MacDougal he has had control issues. Thornton needed a bit to build up his velocity. Now that its there he is fine. Sisco and MacDougal. Same issues. If they throw strikes they will be fine. Sisco has nasty stuff, he just needs to get aggressive. Aardsma is fine. He was beat because they kept going to the well over and over low and away and the cubs adjusted. Boone Logan is a loogy, and a loogy only until he can throw strikes. He has a great fastball, and a great curve and a nasty delivery. Everything is there but his head. If these guys were to take on Danks go for it mentality, a lot of things would be solved in this pen.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 19, 2007 -> 07:31 PM) I had been calm the entire season about this team, which is bizarre for me. I just can't take the last 2 days, blowing leads to a horrendous team and not hitting their equally horrendous bullpen. 2005 softened me up so as I get over bad years once the offseason starts (SEE: this last winter), but I will always been borderline bi-polar about the Sox. It's not healthy, I'll admit, but at least I care. They USUALLY don't own my emotions anymore, which is the 2005 affect. But certain things still get to me. One day I'll learn.... The only part of this team that has been disappointing is the offense. If we have a medicore offense we are in first. When the game ends, I drink a beer and if I need to vent I do it here. I dont vent to my wife, I dont let it affect my work. Its a game. I have lived and died with this team since the 70s, but only in the baseball sense. This is my sport outside of Celtic Football. I could care less if the bulls/bears/fire or whatever plays. This is my team though. I would love for them to win every game. The two last games have been sad, and dealing with the ribbing is hard at work. But in a month, we get our turn on the southside. For me I like Massett and think that he can be a good starter for us in the long run. A lot of people are down on him, however I am looking forward to seeing what he can do tomorrow. You cant blow up this team, and KW wont. He has a nice brand working for him in Chicago and he has made a large set of strides with making a good buck in this town. You cant have a fire sale 2 years out of the WS. That would be nuts. I am going to go into my yard, drink a beer and enjoy the rest of my evening. I suggest you do the same. You can vent on here, and also cheer on here. But to say it affects you personally and you outside of a web board is a bit much. -

QUOTE(kramer99 @ May 19, 2007 -> 06:16 PM) All im saying is i think its too quick to give up and "blow up the team" when we are around .500 and our hitting is doing so poor. I dont mind going in and making changes... but i dont think u have to completely blow up the team. Konerko and Crede are around .200 right now Dye is at around .220 These guys are doing so much worse than their career averages.... i say at least wait and see a little longer to see if they can turn it around. If they dont pick it up in the next few weeks, then make changes. But you have to give them the benefit of the doubt that they will turn it around. To me at least you should. Our SP is doing damn good and our bullpen is struggling as of late. Who would think that we'd be above .500 with a team batting avg. of aournd .220? Give them 2-4 more weeks...thats all im saying You realize that Konerko did this before. 2003 -

A firesale hurts this team for a lot longer than you guys think. Sure it gives you some talent, that may or may not help you. But a fire sale will kill attendance. A fire sale + cubs doing well will bury it. It will taper off later this year. If we are fielding a rebuilding team next year, they will see less renewals on the ticket plans. And without that revenue, the salary of our team will drop. Its a vicious circle. Hopefully they can turn this around. -

You have a pitcher throwing away with hard stuff, and a hitter that hits oppo, Why doesnt Dye play over a bit. Dye stumbles after it like he is on his walker. -

Every team should put a Thome shift on every play and play the pull baseball. Then throw it low and away. We would hit less than .100. This team must pull every f***ing pitch, no matter where its thrown. -

QUOTE(Brian @ May 19, 2007 -> 04:48 PM) Wierd, a few pages back, everyone says Uribe is horrible and can't hit. Which is it? He has hit .230 with a lot of power comparable for his size. That is mini Rob Deer. Rob Deer couldnt bunt either. I would rather him take his huge cuts in that situation instead of popping up the bunt like he usually does. He cant hit consistantly. But the one thing he can do is drive it. -

QUOTE(spiderman @ May 19, 2007 -> 04:45 PM) Yes. Have you seen Uribe hit recently ? Sexy bunt directly back to the pitcher there. At least he didnt pop it up like usual. That was taking the bat out of Uribes hands. The wind is blowing out, and he is an all or nothing hitter. If he makes contact he can hit it ou, he sucks as a bunter and cant execute that properly. -

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ May 19, 2007 -> 04:43 PM) I'd rather not bunt here with AJ up next. How about a hit-and-run? That and the fact the Uribe is a rotten bunter overall. Let him, let it fly. A hit and run would work also. -

QUOTE(Chopper2Hopper @ May 19, 2007 -> 04:33 PM) I'm telling you, Masset=Felix Diaz! I was at the Diaz game, and said beforehand that if he beat the Cubs I'd get his name and number on my jersey. Of course I didn't, but I'll say the same for Nick! I am one of the few guys who like Nick Masset. I think his two seamer and his curveball can be plus pitches. He just needs to throw more strikes. He doesnt have the tick below Jenks stuff in velocity. I would of rather had Massett in AAA learning how to be a starter than have him doing mop up here. -
