  1. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 09:11 AM) I just went and looked it up, I didn't realize how bad he has been. The last week 2-19 .105 ba .190 obp .316 slg .590 ops 2bb 7k For the season the clutch numbers are just as bad .240 risp .125 risp 2 out .176 close and late .214 runners on .083 runners on 2 out .429 runner on 3rd Frank is feeling for the strikezone right now. When you see those excuse me check swing slap hits to the right side, or him backing off like crazy from an inside pitch like it was near his head, he is reaching. He has done this before, its a minor thing that needs to get fixed. When he stands statuesque in the box and doesnt move at all, then he is dangerous. This team has a few months to get better at situational hitting. On 2-0 you should have a zone locked in that you are taking a hard swing at. Some of those 2-0 swings were on low outside pitches. On 2-0 they should be looking center in. If its low and away take it. The count is still in your favor. On 0-2 they need to take a clue from the A's and shorten their swing up a bit and put the ball in play. We have been great this year in making things happen, if you put the ball in play you have a better chance than if you K.
  2. Schmidt throwing 94 is better than Conteras throwing 94. They get Schmidt and Vizquel this team is set. Jenks is throwing the ball like a focking beast. This team would be set.
  3. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 11:25 PM) I'll say this again, if Jose throws like he did today(meaning he has good control) he won't get hit hard very much, he'll be pretty dominating for the most part. Some times you just have to tip your cap to the opposition and this is one of those cases, they hit a pitcher hard that usually doesn't get hit. Lets see how he does with the bosox.
  4. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 11:28 PM) I completely agree but with Bobby's history I'd prefer to take it slower with him, don't want to mess his mind up again, he's got to special of an arm to mess with his head. Now, if Dustin does go down and Bobby proves he can just absolutely dominate then sure give him a shot but that's only if he proves what he can do up here for a while and if Dustin's hurt. Hermy doesn't throw 100 like Bobby but he's blown 1 save and has been absolutely fantastic, he shouldn't lose his job because of an injury. I think Bobby is going to do fine mentally. I would rather if he was the first guy out of the pen to get his feet wet. His control looked good tonight. His only bad control night was with Oakland who makes everyone look like they have no control.
  5. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 11:23 PM) That's an interesting article. They really love Bobby, there's nothing not to love about his arm, if he throws strikes the way he did he's going to be outstanding. Problem with making him the closer this year is most likely he'll have some growing pains but who the hell knows, stranger things have happened. Well we have a nice big lead in our division. And you can make mistakes with a 99-100 mph fastball that you cant make with a 53 mph frisbee. If he doesnt walk the world, he can be filthy in a short set.
  6. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 11:17 PM) Reading tomorrow's tribune article, it looks like Jenks might be the closer sooner, rather than later. Lets be honest. 97-100 mph fastball and a nasty 12-6 curve. If he shows the control he had tonight its not a big jump. Hermy has done a great job this year. But Jenks is the closer of the future. If he takes the role and runs with it, we could have a very very nasty bullpen.
  7. QUOTE(Leonard Zelig @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 11:10 PM) Tonight was the first time I got to see Jenks throw and I was pretty impressed. Does he have the potential to be a starting pitcher sometime in his career? He is our closer of the future. He was a starter but put a lot of stress on that elbow and had pins and a few surgeries on it.
  8. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 10:57 PM) He isn't pitching on Sunday is he? If so, my head will EXPLODE at the ballpark. He is pitching Sunday. Bring some pepto-bismo.
  9. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 10:49 PM) I strongly agree. Detroit just beat him tonight. He was K'ing guys and getting ahead in the count. Despite getting roughed up, I'd say it was a good outing. God we are lowering the bar on what a good outing is. 5.2 innings, 94 pitches, 8 hits 7 runs 4ks. I am sure Felix Diaz gave us similiar numbers last year in the same situation. We will see what the Count is made of by the weekend. Hopefully he brings his fastball and his manhood and challenges the hitters. If he gives up another 4 to 5 inning 7+ earned run affair, maybe we can find another silver lining. He kept the Ortiz bomb off the concourse.
  10. The whole Bmac portion of this thread is dumb. He is a prospect. What will make him a break out prospect is one of two things. Either he gains some weight in those legs and maybe gets a few mph on his fastball which will make its straightness a non issue. Or he will work on getting some movement and get better control in the strikezone. He is 21. He can become the next incarnation of Mark Prior or the next Felix Diaz. Time will only tell. Conteras however is a mental midget. The frustrating thing is his talent. He has million dollar talent with a 10 cent head. His career 13.50ERA against the Bosox will be tested over the weekend.
  11. QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 10:25 PM) Contreras is having a better season than Burnett or Schmidt and he's way better than McCarthy. So unless we're getting Roger Clemens, I'll stick with Jose, even though he does frustrate at times. Well the Counts next start is against his favorite team, the BoSox. This will give us a good barometer of how far he has truly come.
  12. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 03:49 PM) The HR number is very, very troubling; however, if Adkins' name is even being discussed by the Sox brass--which it very well may not--Embree deserves a serious look. Adkins v. Embree ...gimme Embree. NO EMBREEE
  13. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 03:46 PM) You know this how? He never gives his inside WhiteSox source
  14. Its odd that so many managers have problem with this turd of an umpire. Now when Ozzie gets into it with him, its just Ozzie being crazy. But when Gardy gets into with him, its a story on ESPN. Hopefully the MLB gets on Hunter and tells him that he isnt the show, people do not pay money to see him. Gardy sounds like Ozzie here
  15. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 03:18 PM) To the Sox???? More likely to the Twins for Romero. They just got rid of Embree also. The Bosox are in movement now.
  16. For Juan Cedeno and Chip Ambres The Royals received left-hander Juan Cedeno from Class A Wilmington and outfielder Chip Ambres from Class AAA Pawtucket. Ambres, 25, is likely to replace Graffanino on the Royals’ roster, but Cedeno, 22, is viewed by club officials as the key acquisition in the deal. Cedeno is a left-hander with a fastball that regularly reaches 95 mph. He recently converted to bullpen duty and will pitch as a reliever at Class AA Wichita. “We really like his potential,” general manager Allard Baird said. “He gives us another power arm. He shows signs of a plus breaking ball, but that still needs work — as does his command.” Cedeno, 6 feet 1 and 175 pounds, was 2-6 with a 5.61 ERA in 21 appearances at Wilmington. He has 68 strikeouts in 78 1/3 innings but also 37 walks and 10 wild pitches. Ambres was the Marlins’ first-round pick in 1998 and spent six years in the Florida organization before signing last November with the Red Sox as a minor-league free agent. He is batting .294 in 83 games at Pawtucket with 10 homers and 50 RBIs in 83 games. That puts him ahead of his career pace — .258 with 67 and 303 in 715 games. Confirmation
  17. Sounds interesting, it depends on the date though with my work schedule.
  18. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 10:47 AM) Are we talking about foot-falling-off Schilling or normal Schilling? I'd take normal Schilling, too. The Curt Schilling of the Arizona Diamond backs sure. Last years and this years. Forget it. Buerhle over him in a heartbeat.
  19. QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 10:32 AM) Agree with Rock here, it's based on Levine speculating. But Levine could have a point and be right. Suppose Hermanson's back lands him on the 15 day DL. This is as good a spot as any to give Jenks the ball in late innings. I'm not saying he's better than other options but let's find out. I would rather find out about Jenks ability to help this team in 2005 now vs. after the trade deadline. They won't be able to baby this guy down the stretch and in the playoffs, let's see if he's got the right stuff. If that's the case, then a guy like Adkins fits, although he is not that great. Adkins is stretched out and can work the garbage innings, thus saving other bullpen arms for more important roles. Bruuce Levine is as accurate as carpet bombing. Eventually, just like all improbable things he will get one correct. Remember the Crypt Keeper Gammons had AJ coming here as a done deal the other night. Speculation is bascially another word for bulls***. Give Jenks the ball. Cooper, AJ and others need to see if this guy is the real deal. If he is, with that fastball he is as good of a possiblity out of the pen as anyone out there. We have a very nice comfortable lead. We can give the ball to jenks here and there and see what he is made of. They had him up in the 9th yesterday with Politte.
  20. Why again do we care about a group of journalists who picked us for 4th in the division, preseason ranked us in the high teens to mid 20s in power rankings. And basically picked the Injuns and the Twinks to battle it out for the division. Yet we are all worried about a dude who has the 1920's handle of Buster, the Crypt Keeper(Boston Gammons), John "One Nut" Kruk, and HR making predictions. Maybe we should worry next about Rob Neyer who doesnt like our uniforms as his reason to hate the sox. If our pitching shows up we can beat those teams. The only things to worry about is getting Jenks seasoned. Our offense has time to get better with situational hitting. Thats pretty much what we should work on.
  21. QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 10:13 AM) I think he was just goofing around, DING DING DING WE HAVE A WINNER
  22. QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 10:02 AM) What the hell is your problem? IMHO opinion it was a bad move. I would've been happy if they traded something and got somebody good. That didn't happen. I think everyone on at least 3 boards can attest to the fact that you like Shingo and think its a bad move. We get it. Its over get over it.
  23. QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 09:46 AM) Who voted for Charlotte and he will be called up in September besides me. Well here is good luck to you Josh and Dingo and your new identity on some Diamondback board of SnakeBitJosh.
  24. All that I want out of El Duque is to be that 5th starter. When and if we get a chance we skip him to keep him fresh. He becomes the long man in the pen during the playoffs. Tonight showed me he is ready for that.
  25. QUOTE(sircaffey @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 09:35 PM) Every breaking ball he threw except for his drop down sliders, seemed to hang in the inner portion of the plate. Watching the game, I was surprised we weren't down 8 when he left the game. The big thing for me was his velocity. He was getting it up there in the high 80s at times. Very nice. However this is someone you use as a long reliever in the playoffs, and not to start a game.
