Referring to Kelenic ?

No it's not just you. Not many really want to see Eloy out there in LF. Vaughn has been very solid in the field and on fire at the plate. He's definitely a better fielder than Eloy based on his steadiness there and over the past month he is also the best hitter on the team easily.

Not blaming anyone. I am saying he was handled the way most MLB teams would have handled him. He might have been sent back to the minors by a lot of teams, especially teams in contention. He was kept on the 26 only for 2 reasons, his vast potential and injuries. I'm thrilled that he is now hitting RHP so well now. The fact that you cannot comprehend substitutes need to play in order to make future decisions about your team is mind boggling. It's also mind boggling that you cannot comprehend that the best prospects even those with with vast potential can do poorly when first called up and might have to be sat every so often and far less talented players may get playing time ahead of them. It only happens every year many times in the long history of baseball.

Yep, I highly doubt the concerns about his health that I see being bandied about have much to do with why the Sox haven't acquired him.

Scouting will have more to do with trades than prospect rankings . I don't follow a lot of teams prospect rankings but not very many have been updated since earlier this year. Remember there was no 2020 season so in Feb it was a crapshoot ranking prospects. Now that there has been a 1/2 season of minor league ball perhaps performance is a little bit ahead of the toolboxes some of these prospects carry . Based on performance the Sox don't have a lot of their youngsters doing so well. The team everyone wanted to watch in the off season was Kannapolis and maybe Winston Salem. Both have been pretty bad . Only Birmingham is doing ok. But if you look at Birmingham's lineup yesterday all you see is a bunch of 24-27 yr. olds. If you include the pitchers only Pilkington is under 24 . He's 23.

Sox @ Brew Crew, 7/25, 6:08, Game Thread
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to soxfan49's topic in 2021 Season in Review
Don't think it's so cut and dried. Kopech batted because they wanted him to pitch the 8th but with a short leash. If he got the 1st guy he'd pitch to the 2nd guy.. Instead he walks the lead off hitter and he's out of there. It's not like Larussa left him in to walk Adames like you make it sound. He left him in to get outs and since he didn't ,he rightfully took him out. -
Someone saw a Sox scout at Mariners game thread

It's preferring Merrifield and giving up Madrigal that doesn't make sense. -
How big of a moron can you be ? LaRussa's MO all season has been to use subs and play matchups. It wasn't doing Vaughn any good to play him so much early in the season just learning a new position and facing the best pitchers in the world. It was a huge step up for him. God forbid he sit a few games with 145 games left in the season to have a little time to slow things down and observe while he was struggling. Nick Williams time didn't work out. Not a big deal . That's how teams learn what they have . In the meantime other scrubs like Goodwin, Hamilton, and Lamb stepped up when people were whining about them just as much as Williams. Because you play them some exceed expectations and some don't. The fact that many of them succeeded is why the Sox are where they are now. You can never convince me that a scrub shouldn't be playing ever. If you are on the 26 man roster you play and someone has to sit. Maybe if Vaughn had played every day he starts hitting RHP earlier or playing him against only certain types of RHP helped him. No one can say for sure. I think the Sox handled him the right way so when you say consider the source I guess you mean consider the whole Sox brain trust because they handled him exactly the way most major league teams probably would have handled a struggling young player making such a huge leap. Maybe Vaughn himself will some day shed some light on if he thought he was handled the right way, but for you to think it was the wrong way is very presumptuous. At least I can say it I liked how it was handled but leave open the possibility that playing every day could have worked better or turned out worse.

When everybody was saying Eloy should only DH , I was saying that he will be playing LF because you cannot just DH him. So he will be getting OF time . All we can do is hope discretion can be the better part of valor. No one, including himself, want's to be on the sidelines more than he is in the lineup. Being on the field in any capacity is more valuable to the team and himself than being an invalid.

Will be very nice to see Eloy again.

What the Brewers Series is Telling Us
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to shago's topic in Pale Hose Talk
While it's true that Escobar's overall numbers are better against against LHP, here's something to consider. He has exactly 3X the number of AB's against RHP but his extra base hits ( doubles, triples HR's) are also almost exactly 3X higher as are his walks. So while his batting average , OBP and slugging are all worse his BABIP is higher against RHP (.274) than LHP (.250). He also K's a lot more against RHP. What he loses in HR power against RHP he makes up for it with more doubles and triples. Also he has 15 HR's against RHP which easily would lead the Sox by a large margin (Grandal and Abreu 10 each ) . -
Both will be given if not the full 20 days pretty damn close to it. The injury is the issue with Robert , not whether he played at all this year. He had a serious injury and just walking again took time. Now he has to do everything expected of a MLB player with great speed while slowly seeing how that hip responds.

What the Brewers Series is Telling Us
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to shago's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Here you go . It's not just the Brewers series . The Sox play terrible against playoff caliber teams on the road and have for a while So yes we need Eloy , Robert and Grandal, yes we need some BP help and yes another power bat from the left side would help at 2nd base. Those are the most obvious and cheapest options available. A good team expected to make a long run in the playoffs has to play better against good teams on the road. I can live without having the home field advantage if everyone comes back from injury and deadline help enables the road record against good teams to improve in the 2nd half. Then ,if they can also nab HFA, I'd feel very confident in this team's chances to win the pennant and give the NL team a good World Series. -
Today's Crazy Play as I Saw it
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to CaliSoxFanViaSWside's topic in Pale Hose Talk
LOL That was just my explanation for what happened without blaming Moncada. I think if we put ourselves in the same situation, since we all know so much, we probably react the same as Moncada ( if we had accidently missed home and wasn't really sure if we did). I never said the Sox were a good team on the road. In fact I said the opposite , that they play like crap on the road against good teams. It's why I want reinforcements at the trade deadline. I just also threw in that it doesn't help to screw up and for the most part they made their own Murphy's Law luck. -
7/24- Chicago @ Milwaukee, 6:10
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to BigHurt3515's topic in 2021 Season in Review
I've been talking about home field advantage and not being able to beat good teams for weeks and probably was one of the 1st here to say the Sox needed 2 relievers when all I kept seeing was 1 reliever and still do and somehow all I hear is appreciate the team is in 1st place and that I'm unhappy and shouldn't want the Sox to go all in. Also the need for more power but I still see people clamoring for Frazier because a good contact hitter is needed somehow for 2 years. I know I'm offending a lot of people telling them their ideas suck but yea if I have to worry about 3 hitters combining a walk and 2 singles and a 4th hitter not hitting into a DP then yea I'll take 1 swing of the bat for multiple runs or a single run any time. Look at today. Leury made contact . A blooper , a dribbler ,a bad throw by the Brewers and it should've been 2 runs scored. Instead of the ball rolling away it hits the ump and our runner misses home plate. -
Bases loaded for the Sox , no outs, Leury Garcia at the plate. Leury hits a little tapper that only Burnes can field . Moncada is streaking home from 3rd and knows he can score standing up. While bearing down on the plate the catchers foot is smack dab in the middle of the plate. It doesn't look to me like Moncada adjusted his stride to avoid the catchers foot. As the ball is thrown and the catcher removes his foot from the base seeing the throw was uncatchable. Moncada crosses the plate but his stride comes up short and he misses the plate and the errant throw from Burnes hits Moncada then deflects and hits the HP Umpire Rehak and drops at his feet. He then signals safe and I can see Moncada turn his head to look at Rehak and he sees the safe call. At that point Moncada probably goes to the dugout thinking he was called safe. If the ball hadn't hit the ump and rolled another 10 or 15 ft. away Moncada might be thinking, I'm not sure I touched the plate maybe I should go back and touch it. But because the ball hit Rehak the ball was only 6 or 7 ft from home perhaps Moncada thinking he was already safe and with the ball so close to home decides not to try to go back and touch home. If it had rolled further it's possible another run scores and it's 2 runs scored and men on 2nd and 3rd with 0 outs. The Brewers have a meeting on the mound and Burnes retakes the mound and the catcher puts down signs. Burnes then steps off the mound and they appeal the play at the plate the normal way and the ball is thrown to the catcher and he steps on home and Moncada is again called safe. From the 1st safe call through the meeting on the mound to the 2nd safe call takes 1 minute 53 seconds. At that point then comes the replay request and all hell breaks loose. So many things happening on that play from the double deflection on the throw to the 2 safe calls . It was another 3 minutes 25 seconds from the 2nd safe call to the replay out call. Then Larussa comes out states his case the umps go back to call New York again. Everything gets explained to both sides and when Collins steps in the box almost 6 minutes go by. All together from the 1st safe at the plate call to Collins getting into the box to hit it takes a little more than 11 minutes. I guess we could blame Moncada for not sliding or for taking one long stride towards home and coming up short or for not being aware he didn't touch home or for being aware he missed home and not retouching it. We could blame the umps for calling Moncada safe twice especially since ,if Moncada had any doubts he touched the plate, the initial safe call more than likely erased those doubts. Apparently Rehak was distracted from seeing Moncada step on home when he was about to get hit by the ball and just decided to fake his way through the calls figuring 99.9 % of the time a runner touches home. I'll just blame Murphy's law for how things have been going on the road against good teams. Not enough hitting, errors , poor judgment and bad umpiring.

It was his 2nd night in a row pitching. I was thinking I hope he isn't put in for a 2nd inning because of that. Outside of him grooving a low fastball on a 3-2 pitch he still looked strong that inning. -

Called him safe twice. Once on the initial play, then again on the appeal when they gave the catcher the ball and he stepped on the plate. Of course Yoan could've just slid across the plate and all this doesn't happen. -

Even getting mediocre ones is better than sticking with some of our bad ones. But I'm sure anyone can make the argument if you are going to do that you might as well hope guys like Heuer turn it around in the 2nd half. -

I said this back on Feb.24 in the 2021 Plan for Kopech Aand Crochet thread. "I'm a bit skeptical that the pen is a strength because some emerged during the short season and against weak competition. Kopech and Crochet are likely viewed as hedges against the other young relievers experiencing the highs and low of a longer season, stronger opponents and the very nature of the year to year travails of relief pitching in general.
