GAME THREAD 7/7: SOX @ BOS
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to cabiness42's topic in 2014 Season in Review
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 05:33 PM) So Conor plays against LHP but sits verse Buckholz? I swear to god Robin Ventura is either brain dead or his entire '14 managing year is one big epic troll job. Also love that bottom 3, might as well just give them 3 automatic outs in a row like when you don't have enough guys in softball. edit: nm I see Conor is injured. sweet. Ummm Conor has a bruised knee from that HBP in his 3rd AB yesterday. oops i saw you edited yours so I will edit mine . -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 05:54 PM) 5 homers and 11 RBI's in a week. Carlos Lee streaky!!!! Wow. Huge homer, fought back from on 0-2 count. Oppo.....all muscle. Previously 1 for 9 against Buchholz. That thing was crushed about 420 oppo to right center. -
GAME THREAD 7/6 - SEA @ SOX
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to cabiness42's topic in 2014 Season in Review
Great defensive inning for the Sox. -
K , so Dunn's a free agent and Viciedo is supposedly going to be traded for a pile of horse manure. So the Sox lose their 2nd and 3rd best power hitters leaving Jose ABreu to out-homer the rest of the team combined ? Hell yea lets put all the pressure on Abreu to carry the team and rely on a bunch of .250 hitters who can't get on base to score runs. Without HR's the Sox will be so so bad. I hope all you folks advocating a powerless team have a plan because it's real easy to say who to get rid of. Use all those fancy stats to come up with more than who to get rid of.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 08:44 PM) I agree. In the back of my mind there is always the belief he can hit 40 homers, if he does it somewhere else that would suck This is exactly why teams still want him . Among those saying he is what he is , would you be willing to bet your life on it or be willing to trade a valuable but blocked prospect for a shot at a DH would can give you just 1 40 HR season ?

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 08:37 PM) His defence is his main liability, but not getting picked off doesn't mean you're an average baserunner. When you have his speed, you often go one base at a time. That adds up in sucking value. He has enough speed to play the outfielder every day. That's average speed and the average guy doesn't always go from 1st to 3rd on a base hit. That always depends on where the single is hit, if its hit soft or hard or into a gap rather than at the fielder. Until you can quantify his base running sucks I'll stick with average being as objective as I can here without trying to disparage the guy's whole skill set. You can also have average or even below average speed but be a smart base runner, always being alert to advance when a ball get away from a catcher , not getting doubled off on line drives , not running when the ball is hit to the left side when you're on 2nd , being able to judge weather or not a blooper will fall. Not even saying Tank does those things well. It's just that it's something that's really hard to judge because even the best and smartest base runners make mistakes or get thrown out on great throws when they run because they know only a great throw will get them. Then all of that depends on game situations or weather a coach sends you . My main point being I get it. So far his hitting hasn't developed and he has an iron glove But you don't have to throw his base running into the sucking category to make your point unless he's Paul Konerko. There is a point between sucking and above average that posters ignore and instead choose hyberbole instead of facts to make their point.

QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 12:58 AM) imho, just trying to make DV look good for trade value...... which failed. Any trade value he has is for his bat not glove. He was already 4 for 4 ,and had gunned down Ackley trying to stretch a single into a double. It's not like the Mariners don't know Viciedo has been taken out of games in late innings for better defense.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 08:40 PM) We don't have as many holes either. The Sox are in pretty good shape and also will have money to spend. There's still a lot of holes and potential holes depending on who you trade and of course who you get back. 1 or 2 starting pitchers, DH, or LH power bat, LF, 2nd base, SS, C . I think the talent we have or give up is only likely to fill one hole while creating another. I would consider an untested rookie a hole though until proven otherwise.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 08:36 PM) Think on the bright side....at least they didn't draft Rodon. I'll feel much better when he signs on the dotted line.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 08:27 PM) The sox have lots of trade chips though. It's not like they don't have a chance to add. But not chips as valuable as last years chips. Less chance to get players who are more talented.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 08:26 PM) Meh. Even if he is a 290/330/460 hitter, he's at most a 2 WAR player. He isn't going to magically become a better fielder or baserunner. Being charitable, he becomes league average at both -- he turns into a 3 WAR player. And that is just pie in the sky stuff. What about Viciedo screams "290 hitter" in today's offensive environment? A while ago I said Tank was destined to be traded or DH'ed so I won't disagree that he's not that valuable except for potential which teams are still willing to pay for. But I keep reading his base running sucks by some of you guys. I know he's no speedster but do you have something to support his baserunning is bad ? I watch just about every single game and he doesn't steal bases or get caught stealing , doesn't get picked off. I'd say on the eye test he's an average base runner.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 08:07 PM) Feldman and Maholm also. Quintana has been awesome for Sox though. Quintana is old news though . Hammel is new to the Cubs this year and Arrieta picked up last year. If Paulino had done just as well the Sox would be looking much better in the standings and on the trade front.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 08:01 PM) In a decade? That's a big statement. Their reclamation projects have done better than ours, Arrieta and Hammel.
-
QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 07:56 PM) God I am so jealous of that farm system. Pisses all over the 'Stros. Russell and Bryant. That's a whole hell of a lot of talent on the left side of the infield.

18 game hitting streak . Another HR and 2 RBI. Ho-Hum.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 07:39 PM) wow that hawk call on Jose's HR almost made me like him again. Great call but I must ask: is he rethinking the whole "el can~on" thing? I freaking hope so. Call him El Hombre or El Oro! Great call though...just call him the man, yep. I think he is rethinking it. I brought it up the other day in the game thread. It says Pito Abreu on some of his bats.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 07:03 PM) Sans the Trout granny, Sale has a 1.74 ERA this year.....Yes I'm cherry pickin again....Cherries are delicious. If Robin had replaced Viciedo in LF for the 9th DeAza catches the ball Tank missed and Sale gets the shut out. That 1 run kept him from taking the AL lead in ERA which he now qualifies for and WHIP. He is 2nd in both now I believe.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 06:48 PM) PK! ABREU!! TANK!!! SALE!!!! 'MERICA!!!!! Nice summary. Guess I took too long to write mine Someone pls include it in this thread. Murrica !!

The Sox put it all together for a big crowd and beat the Seattle Mariners 7-1 . Sale threw a complete game with 12K's and 0 walks. He lost the shutout in the 9th . Viciedo hit hit 10th HR to open the scoring going 4 for 4 on the night. The Sox exploded in the 6th with a single by Sierra, HBP for Flowers, an RBI double for Eaton, sac fly for Beckham and a 2 run jack by Abreu to extend his hitting streak to 18 games and make it a 5-0 game. He now has 27 HR's and 69 RBI in his historic rookie season. Following a Viciedo infield single Paulie hit a 2 run bomb to finish the scoring for the Sox. It was his 5th of the year and he came out for a curtain call as the big crowd showed it's appreciation for the slugger in his final year.

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jul 2, 2014 -> 09:08 PM) Yeah, we don't wear shoes and we throw every game It's so hard to believe you knew nothing about baseball a short while ago now you're all immersed in Sox history and culture and you're a stat whiz. Nice reference to Shoeless Joe and the 1919 World Series. So how willing will those guys be to teaching a guy who never played how to play ? I mean I hope you're an athlete or played cricket or something because , baseball, it ain't easy.
-
QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jul 2, 2014 -> 08:23 PM) Can you put him back up for adoption please. No offence to your parenting skills but he's hitting .191/.237/.242 in the majors and I just don't feel like it's working out for him under your guardianship. Just you wait "Little" Leury will be a star ! BTW you got that Ireland Baseball website I sent you ?

Needed that win badly. DeAza, Conor and my AAP Little Leury come through.
