  1. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 09:45 PM) He's just one of those guys that everyone gels with. I want him back so bad. Even if he's a 6 hitter, he brings a lot IMO. Soxtalk genuinely seemed depressed when Avi went down because we were all looking forward to seeing him develop. Now that we know what Abreu is capable of it's even more disheartening. Another .800-.850 OPS guy wold be huge for the Sox even if he's not left-handed . I think Avi can be that guy though the saber guys have their issues with him. He may not be that guy right away but he could be sooner rather than later. Get one more strong LH bat and put Avi in there with less pressure and this team will consistently score a lot more.
  2. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 09:20 PM) Yea, maybe 16%. He def looks like he's lost a lot of weight though. Some of that is probably by design so he doesn't get too anemic by the end of the year. Next spring though I think he can come in a little leaner. He's proven fairly durable so far and any problems he's had are with his feet so the benefits of the weight loss outweigh any loss of power -- if any, imo. What we hear some times when it come to pitcher's is repeating their ideal mechanical delivery in order to be consistent. We don't hear that so much when discussing hitters . So when a hitter changes his body I worry that all his moving parts will not flow in the same way that he is used to especially considering how good he is now. Baseball has never been a game where the most physically fit guys are the best hitters. It more a hand /eye coordination/cerebral thing when it comes to hitting. Defensively I'd say being fit matters more.
  3. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 09:24 PM) He's more of a team leader than people think. I want him back real bad. I read tonight where the Sox scored 9 runs 7 times before May 6th I think it was and only once since (tonight). When was Avi injured ? His presence in the lineup may have something to do with that . Or not , but I'll give him partial credit.
  4. QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 09:24 PM) Classic !
  5. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 09:46 AM) So no, not a classic situation. And you have zero idea what would happen in a wild card game or round. Baseball is so random, it's all about just getting to the playoffs as many times as possible to keep getting a spin of the roulette wheel. This is true. Between Bobby Cox and Joe Torre their teams went to the playoffs a combined 31 times Torre's teams won 3 WS Cox 1 . You'd think it would be more but it's genuinely a crap shoot once the playoffs start . Sure having the horses helps a lot but so does riding the hot hand.
  6. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 07:45 PM) One thing to keep in mind is that everyone is genetically predisposed to certain things...some people may function better lean and mean whereas another person May function better with a little meat on his bones, at least from a high-performance athletic level. That's what I was saying. There's just no way to know how Jose will perform at what a fitness "expert " may determine is his ideal performance weight. He might still have foot issues regardless of the weight. Could have flat feet or very high arches or bad bones in his feet or something that running and moving around will always contribute to the problem. But despite all that I hope he remains just as powerful and more nimble without the 30-40 extra pounds should he decide he wants to be at 235.
  7. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 08:49 PM) Right now they need to clear roster space. I'd bet he's back in September. A 2 for 1 trade should do the trick.
  8. QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 08:16 PM) That's 7 XBH in 10 games after having just 10 in his previous 75. Do you believe in magic ? If this thread wasn't already started I would call it " Tyler Flowers and Sorcerers Spectacles" and/or the Great Goggles debate.
  9. Nice victory on the road. Abreu 3rd Cuban to hit 30+ HR's in his rookie year. Flowers continues with the extra base power since donning the sorcerer's spectacles .
  10. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 06:32 PM) I can't imagine Flowers is any quicker than him though. That's who he would have replaced. Flowers is actually pretty quick getting down the 1st base line for a guy his size.
  11. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 06:30 PM) You would know that more than me. Regardless, Stone should know. I think each announcer makes a point to not correct the other on the air. Sort of an unwritten rule not to show the other person up.
  12. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 06:20 PM) He was just commending Dunn for scoring on that Viciedo blooper. I don't think he knew there were 2 outs. He did the same thing saying how Alexei read it good on Dunn's hit Kind of amazed no one would correct him on that . Doesn't he wear an earpiece with direct access to the production people ?
  13. Lexibomb ! Followed by Abreu base hit.
  14. QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 05:45 PM) Isn't there people who review the plays that tell Robin whether or not to challenge plays. Yes but it's up to Robin to use that info at his discretion. Might need it later. It's a wise choice up 3-0 . Wouldn't have given us a run or taken a run away from the Twins.
  15. They went to commercial but that play might be reviewed. Eaton made it close.
  16. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 06:28 AM) My weight fluctuates between 225-230 most of the time. When I got down to 210 I was more explosive but had thr same strength as I just lost fat. Then I got hurt and Thanksgiving happend. The injury was a guy ramming his shoulder into my chest so it would have been hirt at a higher weight as well. Maybe your man boobs at a heavier weight would have protected you more.
  17. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 05:31 AM) It also puts extra stress on the body. Big Frank had nothing but problems with his feet as he got older, and he certainly was a lot bigger late in his career And there's plenty of big men who handle their weight fine. One cannot say with 100% certainty that how much Frank weighed had anything to do with causing the injury in the 1st place . Maybe he was just predisposed to that kind of injury. There's just way too much we think we know about the human body when there's actually a lot more that we don't know by far. I'm not arguing against physical fitness probably just against the arrogance of medical people in general . Maybe 100 yrs. from now just as 100 yrs. ago we'll be thought of as foolish or primitive in some of the things we believe about the body or some of the medical procedures .
  18. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 05:02 AM) Given his ankle injury, losing some weight can only help with that in the future. And just because he loses weight, doesn't mean he's not getting stronger or quicker. These are professionals. If it's not broke you don't fix it. I hope it does help his foot , his back and overall health in general but he's a baseball player in a long grueling season. Sometimes I think extra weight serves as an insulator to injury or a storage area when your body is run down. I think there's such a thing as too finely tuned.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 24, 2014 -> 06:28 PM) Daryl Van Schouwen ‏@CST_soxvan 2m Talking to Sox strength/conditioning coach Allen Thomas pregame. Said Abreu, who weighed 278 when signed, is at 252 now. Goal is 235 in '15. Seems weird seeing this. He's so good now why mess with his body?
  20. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 24, 2014 -> 09:26 PM) I'm a little worried by this mini HR drought You can tell his back is still hurting by what he does between pitches.
  21. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jul 24, 2014 -> 12:00 AM) He's getting lucky with home runs, 5.4% per fly ball compared to 10.2% last year and 10.5% the year before. Those tend to regress towards career average, so we should expect him to start giving up more dingers. On the other hand, he's stranding a few less runners than normal, 69.3%, compared to 76.6% last year and 74.7% the year before. LOB% is also something that tends to regress towards career average. Overall his ERA is probably about right, maybe a touch lower than it should be, but certainly nothing that screams unsustainable. I really don't think Q's been around long enough to have "career average" in anything yet.
  22. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 07:15 PM) I hope Rienzo finishes the last 3 innings (if Guerra can get out of this without much damage). That would give our good arms some rest Rienzo ?
  23. I'm gonna eat a bowl of chow mein and be hungry real soon, I predict. Name the 80's group who sang this
  24. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 05:04 PM) Who was suppose to start the thread?? I see we have our A line up tonight against the great Cy Chen Moi.
