  1. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 08:20 PM) With a broken jaw after taking a fastball to the face. Details matter this time. That was painful to watch. Not Kevin Ware-painful, but sure as hell not pleasant.
  2. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 05:20 PM) http://dailycaller.com/2013/08/21/black-te...-racist-tweets/ Meh, I'll let the link speak for itself. But I thought racism didn't exist in this country anymore? Racism still exists, and it's done by people of all races -- white, black, brown, ALL races. I don't get what's hard to understand about that.
  3. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 10:28 AM) You should have a will. Its not even about property, that will go per stirpes without one. But most parents want to have some sort of input on who is going to take care of their child. So Id say absolutely a will, trust maybe. I personally like life insurance because of social security look backs etc, but that is years down the line and by then who knows what loopholes/tricks will be closed/opened. You could theoretically do one without an attorney. Im pretty sure that for a will to be valid it just needs to be in writing, signed and attested by 2 witnesses. Depends on the state but that's the gist of it.
  4. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 20, 2013 -> 03:31 PM) I have an idea of what you are trying to say. That being able to hold a lead and pitch to the situation is valuable. But it's certainly not valuable enough to determine a pitcher's value when something like that is also not totally up to the pitcher. Ding ding ding. That's why I said it's not nearly as valuable as many other metrics, and why it would be silly to judge him solely or even substantially on that.
  5. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 20, 2013 -> 03:17 PM) Why? The offensive production of his team got him the "w", not his pitching. Because I think there's something to be said for having TWTW, at least on a small scale It's a different way of saying some guys pitch better under pressure. Except in this instance, the pressure is maintaining a lead.
  6. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 20, 2013 -> 10:47 AM) Slow Motion Knockout punch http://deadspin.com/watch-giovanni-lorenzo...4560?autoplay=1 It's like his entire skull moves before his skin does.
  7. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 20, 2013 -> 12:40 PM) This is nonsense. A pitcher can't "do enough" when the team is on offense. He can pitch a shutout and still not get a W, or even a L if a run was given up due to an error. A pitcher also doesn't try to work with any cushion he has. If they score 6, he doesn't take the foot off the gas and give up 5 so he "does enough." He still tries to throw a shutout. A pitcher can go 7 IP, 1 ER and lose. A pitcher can go 5 IP, 6 ER and win. That right there tells me it's a pretty meaningless statistic. It's 99% meaningless, if you don't like 100%. 1st bolded: Everyone tries to throw a shutout. Some are better at holding onto leads than others, whether that means giving up 4 ER in 6 IP or 2 ER in 7IP. 2nd bolded: That's why I said over the course of a few years, not one year, and definitely not one game as you indicated. Would I rather have the guy who consistently 2ER in 7IP instead of the guy with 4ER in 6IP? Well duh. But if the latter guy, over the course of a few seasons, consistently gets wins throwing like that, I'm going to give him a bit of credit for at the end of the day getting the W.
  8. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 20, 2013 -> 10:31 AM) It's going to tell me that he was on a team with a good offense. That's probably most of it. But there's something to be said for doing enough to win the game, regardless of everything else that goes on. Like I said originally, it has far less value than other stats. I'm just saying that it is not 100% meaningless, as some have suggested.
  9. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 20, 2013 -> 11:05 AM) I could have lived the rest of my life in complete bliss without knowing that. I really do need to watch Half Baked again.

That joke reminds of a question I had -- is it pronounced "DANN-ish" or "DAYN-ish?" Or "duh-NISH" I suppose could be possible.
  11. QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 08:18 PM) It's a HELL of a drug. Duh, Bob Saget sucks dick for it.
  12. I think there is some value to wins, but much less than other metrics. Also better when measured over a long period of time, not just a single season. There's something to be said for a guy who does enough to keep his team in games enough to win them, even when his other stats aren't that good. Is there a specific way to quantify that? Maybe not. But if over the course of a few years a guy routinely has more wins than his other metrics say he should, then I'm going to give him some credit for that.
  13. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 19, 2013 -> 10:12 AM) I think it is coming in another game. Girardi clearly was screaming "somebody is going to get hit" as he was leaving the field last night. No reason getting anyone suspended. Save it so you can get revenge and then have the warning issued. I saw that too, and laughed out loud.

Yeah the drunk thread hasn't gone anywhere this year. Heads, you need to save the year.
  15. That was a fun game to go to. Way fewer Sox fans than usual. There's typically a fair amount, but I only saw three or four other ones.
  16. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 17, 2013 -> 02:25 PM) I know, its fantastic. I'm trying to find a way to not construe this as unabashedly racist...but I can't.
  17. I get the entire "wanting to lose for the best draft pick" possible thing, and see its value. But since it's much more of a crapshoot than football or basketball, even at the top of the draft, that reason isn't quite as strong for me in baseball. So I just choose to be happy either way. If they win -- woo hoo, the Sox won! If they lose -- woo hoo, better chance at a top 3 pick!
  18. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 16, 2013 -> 07:57 AM) So A-Rod's people leaked the documents implicating Ryan Braun & Francisco Cervelli? Maybe that lifetime ban idea wasn't so crazy after all. If true, and if it was at the direction of A-Rod himself, I would think this would blackball him.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 02:30 PM) Problem is...there really is no comp for guys like that. They're one in a hundred million. There really isn't. So the only comp is guys with no other comps...like Mantle.
  20. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 16, 2013 -> 01:06 PM) Charlie Manuel out as Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg in Barring him suddenly winning a bunch of World Series with the Phillies, I still think he ends back up with the Cubs at some point.
  21. I question his premise. Never heard we were the envy other clubs, whether they had OF prospects or not.
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 04:13 PM) With all the people on prescription meds for anxiety, depression ... is it OK to get completely drunk 2-3 times a week when you are full of those type of meds? Let's say you are on all sorts of anxiety stuff and high blood pressure medication and yet you drink like a fish. Could you just up and die one night? Depends what you're on. Some will just get you drunk faster. Also depends how many you're on. Fewer prescriptions, less likely to be problems. In general, anxiety is treated with an SSRI. That's one of the ones that will just get you drunk faster. Bottom line is to talk the prescribing doctor.
  23. I've watched far more Twins games on TV than White Sox ones this year. I have MLB.tv to watch the Sox if there's a reason I want to (like Sale pitching or something), but flipping the channel over to Fox Sports North to put something on in the background is just easier.
  24. Just going off what I'm reading here, seems like he was just wearing an Obama mask, in the same way other presidential masks would be worn. Is it possible that the rodeo clown was happy/agreed with the racial undertones? Yeah. But the bottom line is that there are probably other things worth getting angrier about. Move on.
