POSTPONED: Opening Day Game Thread 2017
Wanne replied to southsider2k5's topic in 2017 Season in Review
QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 3, 2017 -> 04:53 PM) Free advice for the Sox- postpone Wednesday and Thursday's games tomorrow. The Tigers come back twice. Take the 26th man and better weather in May and August. Not even sure why the MLB does this crap. There's not enough decent climate/domed stadium teams to spread things out the first few weeks in April?...no...let's have San Diego and LA Dodger play...SF and AZ...LA Angels/A's...then have Chicago/Detroit...geezus. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 25, 2017 -> 04:31 PM) I'm not the biggest fan of his set up and delivery. Seems like he might struggle to have quality command I say that every time I watch him pitch. It just seems too..."contrived" for no better word. It just looks awkward...like he's struggling to remain still for too long.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 16, 2017 -> 06:50 PM) Something changed. He seemed really happy with the situation at the end of last season. So either it is a health issue with himself or maybe his wife or someone, I am thinking maybe his eyesight, or something hit him. Maybe he realizes the team is going to suck and it won't be pretty for a few years. Whatever it is,I wish him well. yeah....thought that too. A few times he got giddy on a little pop up...or a ball got crushed and he had no clue where it was a few times. I've always liked Hawk...he's an icon. He needs to do what's best for him bottom line. Definitely won't be the same not having him around. I'm not going to pile on JB either...but I really get bored listening to him tho.

I have a hard time seeing Colorado making any kind of huge moves like that at this point because a guy they just signed to a fairly large contract (for them) breaks his hand and will miss a few months...

lol...geezus...beer snobs at a baseball game....mkay. Honestly...I couldn't give two craps what a venue has for the beers when I get there as long as it's COLD! Bud Light...Lite...Coors Light...bfd...you're there to watch baseball...not lift your little pinky fingers while you watch as you sip beer out of your Solo plastic cup and swoosh it around your palette to right a review!

that was one hell of an impressive performance!

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 10, 2017 -> 07:27 PM) Hahn has to be grinning from ear to ear right about now. lol...this.

QUOTE (reiks12 @ Mar 2, 2017 -> 01:16 PM) Dalbec looks like a monster just reading up on him I REALLY wanted the Sox to draft Dalbec last year. He is a monster and slid to the 4th round after a really lackluster Jr year at UofA. Not sure if it was all his hype since he was projected as a high to mid 1st round going into the season....or the fact he was really getting jacked around between playing 3B and pitching. He finished the year ok after a miserable start...but this guy is definitely a monster who will be heard from down the road IMO.

QUOTE (BamaDoc @ Feb 22, 2017 -> 04:38 PM) I absolutely love that the other day Renteria canceled the intrasquad games to do more drills on fundamentals. That was after watching them do drills the day before. Maybe he saw how bad they looked? In any case, it drives me crazy when guys make fundamental errors. That is pretty refreshing to hear. And if they do it them unsatisfactorily...do them again...and again after that.

My Dad and I...doing our usual State of the Sox talk before spring training...I brought up that fact how Hansen continually gets overlooked as a top prospect. Probably one of the bigger steals of any drafts that I can recall recently given where he was taken. I agree with jerksticks somewhat...that he's soon to be a Top 10 spec. Guy is just too good to live in anonymity...

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 15, 2017 -> 03:18 PM) Mulva? hahahhaa....YOU BASTARD....that made me spit beer out my nose!

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
Wanne replied to GGajewski18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (shipps @ Dec 28, 2016 -> 05:13 PM) Not sure I want to go down the rabbit hole of debating this but I personally don't feel like they would be idiots for not making that trade. Schwarber has the potential to be a top three power hitter in all of baseball IMO and isnt far away from that right now. Not to mention the guy proved he could do it on the biggest of stages. I seriously doubt they get the year out of the rotation that they got this year. Arrieta is getting a little long in the tooth...and not a sure thing to re-up with the Cubs either. Lester had a great year for sure...I'd be shocked if duplicated. We'll see with Hendricks too. The legend of Kyle Schwarber is getting more Rocky Horror cult status than actual production IMO. He had a good series after missing the entire year. Pitching is a premium. Schwarbers come and go...very good left handed pitchers under control for a number of years that are MLB proven upper echelon don't. Schwarber hasn't even gone thru a full year at the MLB level yet...and people want to put him on this pedestal for his HOF bust already. We'll see....of course this is just my 2¢. -

QUOTE (shipps @ Dec 28, 2016 -> 04:33 PM) The Cubs wouldnt give up Schwarber for Q straight up let alone also give Baez and other prospects. Cmon guys. lol...the Cubs would be idiots if they didn't. -
QUOTE (Doc Edwards Shot @ Dec 28, 2016 -> 02:57 PM) I never saw anyone come close to even landing a homer into the dead-centerfield bleachers over that huge wall that was probably 30 feet high and 430 feet out, much less hit the scoreboard beyond those bleachers. The best I ever saw were balls hitting that wall about halfway up on the fly. Anything that made it all the way to that wall was usually an automatic triple, just like balls hit today at Comerica Park in Detroit deep into the RF power alley. Eventually, the Sox installed a more reasonable "homerable" CF wall that was short - like only 8 feet - and about 400-410 feet away. hear ya doc...where the arrow is pointing is where he hit it. I want to say it was against the Orioles (not 100% sure on that one)...but we were sitting in the right field bleachers close to the bullpen. Is was about 3 rows or so from back of the bleachers where it hit...and it wasn't a towering shot either. Damn that guy could hit a ball...

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Dec 28, 2016 -> 03:02 PM) I co hosted in 2012 the 40th anniversary for that team put on by the Chicago Baseball Museum and the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. Dick was there along with Bill Melton, Carlos May, Hank Allen, Bart Johnson, Ed Spiezio, Tom Bradley (who threw a complete game in the first game of the DH you talked about), "Goose" Gossage and Roland Hemond. It was a terrific time, gave a :25 minute speech outlining the season. Dick told me he wasn't eating a taco but a chili dog. When Tanner wanted him to pinch hit he ran back to the clubhouse, threw on a uniform (minus the long sleeved undershirt because he didn't have time) wolfed down his chili dog (getting it all over the uniform top) and got out on the field. He hit the third pitch from Lyle (a slider) into the seats for the win. I actually have that entire radio broadcast in my library (Yankees radio network) after the home run Phil Rizzutto couldn't believe it. The tone of his voice was like someone ran over his dog! Here is the link to my story on that weekend if you are interested: http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/rwas/in...y=2&id=4314 Good times...great season! I also have Harry's radio call of Dick's bleacher shot home run (was sitting near him that afternoon along with a young Richard Roeper) and the WFLD-TV video of Dick's two inside the park home runs in the same game at Minnesota that same season. Mark Great stuff Lip!...thanks for posting! lol...the chili dog story...so awesome! We were sitting down the 3rd base line...and that ball got outta there in a hurry! btw...one of the things I got my dad for Xmas: God Almighty Hisself: The Life and Legacy of Dick Allen by Mitchell Nathanson. He said it's an amazing read so far.

When I was a kid I was with my Dad at that double header where the Sox beat the Yankees the first game (can't remember the score). The second game Dick Allen hit a pinch-hit 3-run homer off Sparky Lyle in the bottom of the 9th inning (a frozen rope against the wind into the left field bleachers) and the Sox won 5-4 for the sweep. There's a great story behind it too about Chuck Tanner not being able to find Allen to pinch hit and he was in the clubhouse eating (I've heard tacos...but not sure). They sent the ball boy to find him. To this day it's one of the greatest sports moments I've seen live. Also saw him almost hit the scoreboard at old Comiskey...and for you older guys...you know how far that was. I spent so many fun days at old Comiskey. Allen is still my favorite player to this day...

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 09:23 PM) I bet Detroit is better than we expect. Royals too. I dunno...I'm really not all that enamored with Detroit. Seems they're relying really on an aging lineup (sound familiar)? I personally think their rotation blows too. But who knows...

QUOTE (Ro Da Don @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 09:36 PM) I agree with you but we can't worry about targeting our future guys for CF and C until we're reading to compete, IMO. When you target and plan for specific positions is when you tend to fall short. Collect the best talent possible in trades and the draft for now and worry about acquiring our positions of need either via trade or FA when we're ready to compete. Who knows, players we already have may develop and be there for us. Time will tell. Patience is key. it's targeting hitters..hence Schwartz regardless of his position. IMO...being a C is icing on the cake.... -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 09:11 PM) The key here is that catching spot, and CF. Can Collins play it well enough...and not impact a young pitching staff from a defensive/leadership standpoint in a negative way? We'll find out soon enough, because he's going to spend time with a lot of those young pitchers before they reach the big leagues. We've seen with Eaton, Cain and Heyward the value that the market is playing on DRS/WAR now (and also the difference between Eaton/DeAza/Rios/Pods in CF vs. on a corner). If the White Sox can develop Basabe (big if) or bring in another version in Cameron, then that solves your four main pieces to the puzzle, and you can address the corners much more easily. In reality, CF and catcher has been an issue for half a decade now...and CF, much longer. And with AJ, you lived with the defensive shortcomings because he made up for it offensively and with gamesmanship, for most of his White Sox career. Fwiw, Tucker was playing CF in the Quad Cities this summer and looked pretty natural/fluid in the few balls hit to him, but he's not Devon White out there either. That's why I wouldn't have any problems if the Sox snagged JJ Schwartz from FLA next year at #12. Between him and Collins...if they both swing the bat well...one of them will stick at 1B (other at C at the next level).... -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 08:39 PM) I have difficulty imagining Jose Abreu as a major positive contributor in 2019 after his previous 3 years and that's the first year where I'd really be looking at Moncada as hopefully being unstoppable, so I mentally counted him as a guy needing replaced by then, or at least not as a major strength. true...if not traded. Bregman/Anderson/Moncada/? Gallo? Abreu would look good in a Ranger uni -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 08:21 PM) If you're worried about position player prospects and you get back a single, cost-controlled star, a guy who hits .300+ with 20+ HR and fills a #2/#3 hitter spot in your lineup, and you combine that with Anderson and Moncada, you've filled out 3 of the top 4 slots in your lineup with what will hopefully be strong contributors. With no one else who is a big name, just a bunch of average contributors...team that with a rotation that is at the top of baseball, and you have a roster that is competitive for the division. If he's that good, if we're talking about 3 dynamic players manning 3b, 2b, and SS - find me one more bat who can hit 35 HR (there are several on the market every year right now), find me some average players to hit 5-8 who are good defenders, and I have a championship caliber White Sox roster. Your scouts better like Bregman to do it, the 4/5 player concepts are tempting if you have any available...but a star would do it too. that's why they get paid the big bucks lol. But like you and blacksox said...have an infield of Moncada/Anderson/Bregman AND Abreu...good lord...that is SICK! That's why I'd do the Q for Bregman straight up...I just think he's gonna be a really good one. But what do I know... -

QUOTE (Ro Da Don @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 08:17 PM) But you got both quality AND quantity back in those deals. Ideally we can continue that trend. oh I agree...you always want both. I think Hahn hit the mother lode with both deals...and it'd be great if it continued. That being the case I think you might have better luck pointing a deal towards Colorado. I'm just not seeing Houston offering up a very large package...and getting them to part with Bregman would be huge. I just don't think you're going to get anywhere close to the packages we've seen already... That being said...if that 1-1 actually went thru...and you'd have told me a few weeks ago: Sox traded Sale, Q and Eaton and got: Moncada Bregman Giolito Kopech Basabe Diaz Lopez Dunning I probably would have crapped my pants... -

QUOTE (Ro Da Don @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 08:11 PM) You're discounting injury and a player just not finding his grove at the MLB level. Gordon Beckham looked like a sure thing too. touche'. However...at this point I'd still be more about quality than quantity given what we've already gotten back for Sale and Eaton. -

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 08:05 PM) I'd rather take that risk than take the 1-1 risk. I take it then you're not sold on Bregman being a potential star?.....that was my point. To me...he seems like as sure a thing as you'll find in a young player. He'll be a good one I think...
