  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 11:38 AM) Based on the seasons they're having, McCann/Utley/Morales will almost definitely be trying to get multi-year deals. Utley seems like a lock for the Dodgers, in my opinion. Granderson's the only one that might take a 1-yr deal to try and raise his stock again. Are we not allowed to give out multi-year deals? I'd like to lock up one of Morales/Pence/Choo to about a 3 year deal. Signing two (would have to Morales + another) might be a stretch, but we'll have the money. Will be interesting to see how the market goes. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 12:03 PM) I'm not crazy about a guy with a career OPS of .714 playing 1B. I like Viciedo and think he can be a good hitter at some point, and there's no reason to get rid of him heading into next year, but he's walking on thin ice. I'd like to try our best to keep him in the OF as long as possible. Moving to 1B is always an option, but moving back to OF from 1B is not something you see go well very often. He's bad, but he's not unplayable in the OF at this point. I'd feel more comfortable with him at 1B if we had more certainty with his bat; we don't. You don't want to give up on Dayan, but you don't want a 1B that can't hit. I'd much rather have a bad LF than a bad 1B.
  2. I think they're trying to see which of these 25-28 year old outfielders is best fit to be a backup on the big league club. They wouldn't mind somebody really breaking out and being a starting caliber player either, of course. My feeling is that of the players, Casper is most capable of catching on as a real-life big league starter. Danks and Tekotte are probably pretty similar in terms of their likely use as fourth outfielders.
  3. John Danks is one guy I wouldn't mind getting rid of for cash reasons if it means we keep Peavy. We can trade him from the rotation as that is a position of strength.
  4. The "movie about Will Ferrell's life" comment was awesome
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 11:33 AM) no grumble grumble something about how GarPax sucks
  6. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 11:34 AM) Sure, if we circumvent the system and give Trayce a huge extension and say he has to share it with his brother after Klay agrees to a below-market level extension here:) I like the way you think
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 11:23 AM) And Peavy, if he can stay healthy and we time it right. Maybe we can also bring back Gavin Floyd and flip him (via waivers) in August if he's not ready before July 31st. I'm not sure if he's going to be pitching 12 months from now, yet
  8. Warriors will need sign and trade to get Howard Is there any way fathomable way that we can sneak in there and get Thompson sent our way?
  9. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 10:27 AM) I have to root for a Hoosier? Ugh. Took at a glance at his minor league numbers, is there any reason to think 2013 isn't a fluke? .966 OPS this year, previous best season was a .743. There is some reason to think it's a fluke. On the other hand, he developed a serious illness shortly after becoming a pro that caused him to miss nearly an entire season. He then continued to be fairly aggressively promoted despite not being all that successful at the plate, most likely due to his age. He had dealt with some injuries in years past as well. This is his first year repeating a level, so it very well may be that he's just finally gotten a chance to be healthy and comfortable.
  10. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 10:17 AM) That team could just as easily get hurt or get old and win 70 games with all kinds of money tied up. The Sox, if they do sign free agents, really need to limit it to about 1-2. Agree. I'd like to see them bring in an important piece or two, but there's no reason to dump $50 million or so into the 2014 team. You'll take a few risks with young players alongside the few new faces. If we don't win, which is probably likely, you have the chance to trade away a guy like Dunn and get some more prospects and continue gradually mixing in FA vets and young players in 2015 (hard to prognosticate that far when we don't know how young players are going to be doing)
  11. So many layers in that picture
  12. QUOTE (Knuckles @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 06:39 PM) Any team out there needs a catcher? My friend thinks this callup means end of Flowers. I sure wouldn't think we'd call Josh up to not play. I would have been happy to let Flowers have a chance to play a bit longer, but not with Phegley on the bench. If Phegley is here, he has to play.

sign this guy to an extension FAST

I think keto (prefer cyclic keto) can be an effective weight loss strategy but isn't a real way to live one's life. For people that do a lot of cardiovascular-heavy exercises, I recommend ~50% of cals to come from carbs
  15. Adam Dunn is the only reason this team is watchable
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 12:05 PM) I'd rather have an extra $7 million to throw at extensions for Quintana, Santiago, and Reed than not have it. You've seen the salary numbers for next year, I'm sure of it. Do you think Dunn's presence has any bearing on our ability to extend/sign whoever we target? To me, it's worth every penny to gamble on getting nice prospects/players at the deadline next season (or, gasp, even be a winning team at the deadline!)
  17. I'd like someone to explain to me why we are going to need salary relief.
  18. The proposed Aldridge deal is the exact kind of thing bad franchises love doing. Portland can have Deng and like it.
  19. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 03:26 AM) For some reason, I consider Gillaspie a utility guy, like a little better version of Lillibridge. Like a Lillibridge that only plays one position, is left-handed, and can hit
  20. I've talked about this elsewhere, but my feeling is that the savings are so great just by letting this year's contracts expire plus any other trades that dumping Dunn for purely monetary reasons doesn't make sense. You take the gamble that he becomes worth real baseball talent next year and in the worst case, the White Sox have spent money that they weren't going to spend on another player.
  21. Rios and Peavy should not need money sent with them, though I'd be happy to send some if it really is necessary. If I were him, I wouldn't bring that up until negotiations reach breaking point, though. I think the best route to take with Dunn is to keep him going into next season and you'll find that everyone will come calling for him in the expiration year of his contract.
  22. Saw this from last night's postgame notes woops
  23. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 12:26 PM) Rios is the best OF on the market right now. I don't think there's any question that he will not be around for the next contender, and so we need to take advantage of the fact that his value will never be higher. He's under contract until 2015 if we want him, so I hope he is around for our next contender. With that said, you can trade him, get something real nice back in return, and spend that salary on a similar player in the offseason AND have prospects.
  24. I don't think Texas is a suitor for Alexei, but they have the exact same UZR since their respective debut seasons. Andrus is by no means automatically a better defender.
