I disagree. I think those are huuuuuuuuuuuge upgrades to what they used to have.
-
I like this news and I wish they went after him earlier because he'll probably say no now. Maybe Weber can get him drunk and get him to sign something.
-
I think he's going to Indiana. Gets to play with Gordon, gets to play in a huge conference, gets to play on a contending team as soon as he steps on the court, and will be in the national spotlight. People might say he won't want to share his spotlight with Gordon, but if Rose is as good as people say he is, he won't mind it because he'll end up getting drafted top 5 regardless. Right now I think it's: Indiana Memphis ...Illinois

What does any of this have to do with recruiting? The last page and a half seems like it should belong in the College Football Thread.

QUOTE(He_Gawn @ Oct 31, 2006 -> 08:12 AM) Also when you think about it. Demitrius Jones will probably move to WR now that Jimmy Clausen is on his way here. All I've constantly heard is that Jones is a playmaker. Does he even want to be a WR though? I thought he was rated higher than Juice as a QB coming out. I wouldn't be suprised if he jumps ship to another school with Claussen coming in. That's just from an outsider's pov though.

QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 28, 2006 -> 07:44 PM) No, it is not Eric Gordon. I'm pretty the Illini staff would never take Gordon back onto their roster anyway.... Well who's the recruit you're talking about?
-
QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 28, 2006 -> 05:11 PM) Derrick was the one who requested the visit Derrick was also the one who requested to stay over night Derrick wants to stay over night at UI again If Derrick verbals, a certain other big time recruit will likely follow assuming the coaches still want him there(I'm sure you can figure out who that is) Derrick may eliminate a school by the time of his announcement Rose to UI is certainly looking better. I don't know. Still seems like Memphis to me for whatever reason. No, I can't figure out who that is. Who's the big time recruit who would follow him?

I'm a big Buehrle fan but this is obnoxious

QUOTE(TheOcho @ Oct 28, 2006 -> 01:24 PM) Why? Because, he was one of the guys who came out and flat out said the team had a hungover from last year and he probably didn't work as hard as he normally would've or should've. At least he implied it pretty strongly. He needs to get on a workout regime. -

I want to personally smack that Cardinals hat off of his head. -

Option will be picked up. Trade him for Wainwright and/or Reyes. Or trade him for Rolen and either of those two or a top prospect. Then swing Rolen or Crede to NYY for A-Rod. *Puts PS2 Controller down* -
Is it just me or does Brandon Inge remind anyone else of Joe Crede?

QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 26, 2006 -> 12:09 PM) It would make a lot of Illini fans hypocritical if Rose chooses Illinois. And honestly, I don't think it is that farfetch'd. Everyone and their brother knows Weber has continued to recruit him since he took Illinois off his list. With that said, does anyone else get the feeling that Rose simply does not want to play with Gordon? No, I just don't think he knows what he wants to do at all yet. I thought I remember him saying he would like to play with Gordon and vice versa with Gordon saying that about Rose.

Ugh, I rather have Razor helping Ozzie make decisions, not free-waving Joey Cora.
-
QUOTE(aboz56 @ Oct 22, 2006 -> 10:29 PM) Rose is one and done. He's the best pure PG to come out of HS in a long time. If he came out this season, he'd be a top 5 pick, maybe top 2 or 3. Barring an injury or unforseen problem, he'll be playing college for one season. Not really. He reminds me alot of Jason (stop calling him "Jay") Williams. He's not even the greatest guard in his class. I'd take OJ Mayo over him easily.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Oct 17, 2006 -> 10:42 PM) The last part of my scenario I assume you're saying? Yep. Oh yeah, does A-Rod have a no trade clause still? I thought he waived that right after he accepted a trade from the Rangers to the Yankees. Anyone got info on that and if he does have one, why would he come to the Sox?
-
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Oct 17, 2006 -> 08:56 PM) Crede and Garcia for A-Rod. Contreras for Danks and Arias. Danks and Fields for Crawford. Sign Iwamura to take over at 3rd base. So salary going out is (from this season); Contreras - 8M Crede - 2.675M Garcia - 9M Total = About 20M Salary coming in (2007 salary); A-Rod - 18M (could get that figure down to 15M if traded maybe?) Crawford - 4M Iwamura - Hard to say, maybe 5-6M for a few seasons? Total = About 24M-28M The thing is with this scenario though, our starters are basically down to Buehrle, Vazquez, Garland and B-Mac. So you'd have to sign a 5th starter or give it to a Lance Broadway or Charlie Haeger. Which is what we don't want to do.

QUOTE(TaylorStSox @ Oct 16, 2006 -> 07:44 PM) Here's the thing though, Williams and Cook were not Self's recruits. Mcbride and Randle were Self's recruits. Dee is the exception. Deron wasn't too far off from McCamey. Wasn't Brock a 4 star on Scout? I thought he was. Anyway, Smith is a good example of what a good coach can do when he recruits for his system ie. Bo Ryan. After all is said and done, ratings don't mean s***. Results mean everything. Bruce Weber has done more for Illini basketball than Kruger, Self or Henson ever did. Brock was a 3 star. Also, I think the point he's making is that you do need talent to be an elite program. For the past 5 years, you could make the claim to Illinois being an elite program. It now appears with Weber's recruiting, they've fallen off. And I consider being an elite team being a lock to make it to the 2nd weekend of the tourney and constantly competing for the Conference title which I can't see the Illini doing. BTW, Bo Ryan is recruiting some fine players from what I see.

QUOTE(fathom @ Oct 15, 2006 -> 10:24 PM) Illinois played one of the worst at-large teams in the history of the tournament, and then lost in the 2nd round of the tournament. In 2004, I can understand trash talking about the tournament showing by Kansas. However last year, they lost to a damn good Bradley team. Taylor...let me ask you this: if Kansas played Illinois this year 10 times on a neutral court, how many times would you predict Illinois would win? 3 at most and I'm an Illini fan. Illinois will get into the tourney, that's not a question. Will they have a shot of winning anything next year? Not a chance.

QUOTE(TaylorStSox @ Oct 15, 2006 -> 04:49 PM) Illinois basketball will survive without Eric Gordon. The 05 team had 0 five star recruits. I believe in Coach Weber's ability to win games. Recruiting doesn't win games. How many blue chippers were on LSU and Florida? Thomas was a 3 star for christ sakes. The internet has overblown recruiting in the worst way. Take KU, for example. That team's loaded with talent but, they're absolutely garbage. They're so bad, it's frustrating to watch. Brewer: 5 star prospect Horford: 4 star Richard: 4 star Noah: 4 star Hodge: 4 star Blue Chipper and 4 other really great players around him. Care to retract?

I want details.

QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 14, 2006 -> 07:19 PM) Illinois certainly has better than mid-major talent. The comparison was ridiculous. Anyway, it is more than possible to win without great recruiting, although it certainly helps. Heck, Maryland won the whole thing without any burger boys on their roster. No it's not ridiculous. I'm comparing schools with good coaching, but little to no talent, not majors with midmajors.
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 14, 2006 -> 07:57 AM) It's a huge overreaction. Like you said there are ways to survive without unbelievable, ridiculous talent. I'll guarantee you one thing, and that's that Bruce will get the most out of the talent he has. Not really. If it was mostly about coaching over talent, then how come the vast majority of talent wins out in the NCAA? Only team that did anything was George Mason. That's the only team ever. No one can possibly tell me, that the Illini, with the way its recruiting is going, is national championship contender material, nor are they final four material.

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Oct 14, 2006 -> 01:00 AM) I agree that it will be much tougher than it would have been. But in the grand scheme of things, you can't really blame a 17-yr old who is doing what he thinks is best for him in the long run. It hurts, just as if it were losing a key employee to a competitor, but at the end of the day everyone has to look out for themselves. I don't know the depth of the Illinois roster that well, but teams are not made up of one recruiting class (with rare exceptions). Surely, they can find a way to survive if they can't get a SG this class?? If by survive, you mean lucky to be in top 25, then yeah, Illinois will have a shot at that. Anything more than that though, Illinois has gone down the crapper.

QUOTE(shipps @ Oct 14, 2006 -> 07:19 AM) Yes Arod is a great player but iam so tired of everyone just handing him "the best player in mlb".He has put up great numbers throughout his career but I dont think he is the best player in the majors. When we play the Yankees do you really fear Arod in that lineup?I dont. You dont get the feeling he will hurt you when it counts for the big hit. Whose the best player in the majors then?

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Oct 13, 2006 -> 03:10 PM) DePaul is in the better conference, better city, with it's own rich history...I'm very excited about the direction my team seems to be heading with the positive (though quiet) buzz we've been getting as sleepers this year, and a very nice '07 recruiting class that can possibly get A LOT better with a certain recruit... Been hearing nothing but good things about Coach Wainwright on the recruiting trails which has quickly payed dividends with the guys he's recently gotten... And weber's recruiting deficiencies will hopefully aid Wainwright in continuing to recruit the Chicago area well. I would not have minded gordon going to illinois if it meant that it helped DePaul gain an edge in getting rose. Yes, I'm still holding out hope for rose (fingers crossed). It's been said that DePaul has a better chance than expected. Personally, I feel that we're second behind memphis... Well, I didn't mean to insult DePaul, but they had a crappy year last year with some very big losses to horrible teams, with a new coach and they've been able to steal guys left and right. With the way DePaul's recruiting, I would've thought they went to the National Championship game two years ago, not Illinois.
